Q: 80's movie with evil amulet?

DaveInCazThis was a movie or maybe TV show I remember seeing as a kid - probably in the 1980s, very late 1970s at the earliest. (The film/show itself could be older) The detail I remember somewhat clearly is that there was an "amulet" which had some kind of evil influence or maybe mind controlling power....

Q: How common is the ability to create portals?

AdamantVarious mages are seen to have the ability to create portals for transport. It seems that Yennefer is particularly talented, but her ex-boyfriend also was able to do it, and the assassin that was chasing Yennefer seemed as adept with it as she was. Both of them were able to transport themselves o...

Q: How does the Death Star maintain an atmosphere?

userIn A New Hope it's clear that the Death Star has an atmosphere around it. Explosions near its surface result in fireballs indicating oxygen, and ships show clear signs of being affected by drag (air resistance). They need to keep their engines running to maintain speed and when hit immediately fa...

Q: Why didn't the Dopple know the answers to these questions?

AdamantThe Dopple claimed, after taking the form of Mousesack, that everything Mousesack had known belonged to them. And indeed, Dopple-Mousesack displayed knowledge of certain facts, such as that Mousesack had intended to take Ciri to Geralt. However, when Ciri confronted the Dopple in the form of Mous...

Q: Is there an in-universe explanation as to why the Ancient One is bald?

Rebecca J. StonesThe Ancient One is a bald woman. Out-of-universe, it's probably because she's based on a bald male character. But... Question: Is there an in-universe explanation as to why The Ancient One is bald? Perhaps she stopped growing hair for some reason (although she still has eyebrows), e.g., becau...

Q: Book about a girl who can communicate telepathically with an orange cat

Kira ChanI’ve been looking for a certain book now for at least 5 years. It was a hardcover edition, with a mostly grey cover and a girl with an orange cat sitting. ^ "about a girl [...] who could telepathically communicate with her orange cat" and the cover shows the cat. Does that remind anyone else to the M:tG card Spirit Link where the lady sends forth his cat or lynx to do his bidding? The old illustration scryfall.com/card/6ed/43/spirit-link matches the question's description better, but the 8th Edition version scryfall.com/card/8ed/47/spirit-link is more memorable to me.

Q: What is the earliest instance of "Dark Elves" in modern fantasy?

Q: Heinlein, "Everything not compulsory was forbidden," in "Coventry?"

Ben CrowellThere is a satirical phrase, "Everything not forbidden is compulsory," which seems to have been a part of popular culture (in varied form) in the English-speaking world in the early 20th century. It was later used by Murray Gell-Mann as a tongue-in-cheek way of formulating a fundamental principle...
