7:08 AM
@Alex kinda, but they also were posted roughly at the same time and the thing is that the question is just making a mountain of a molehill

1 hour later…
SQB
8:10 AM
@Jenayah well, you brought them up.

@SQB true

SQB
Hello there.

Oi

SQB
Hmm, nachos. Please pick another name, you make me hungry :)
OTOH, maybe breakfast.
Yeah, breakfast. BRB.

8:17 AM
haha
@SQB I'm thinking of having a sock account named "McDonald's Hash Browns"

I only see "Jalapeno" haha
hash Browns?

yeah @Jenayah - do you like hash browns?
I've been getting it every morning at McDonald's recently :(
bad habit ...

@JalapenoNachos I don't know what they are

Oo
fried potatoes?

oh, ok

SQB
8:19 AM
Rösti Rounds?

Potatoes, Vegetable Oil (Canola Oil, Soybean Oil, Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, Natural Beef Flavor [Wheat and Milk Derivatives]*), Salt, Corn Flour, Dehydrated Potato, Dextrose, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate (Maintain Color), Extractives of Black Pepper.

I'm French :p
You know, where they call that thing the "Royale with Cheese" :p

@SQB yes, similar - are you Swiss?

Also, le Big Mac

@Jenayah Oo I see
@Jenayah the big mac tastes like all bread ... ugh ... the meat is tiny ...

SQB
8:21 AM
@JalapenoNachos Dutch. That's what we call 'em here.

@SQB ah, I see :)

@JalapenoNachos eh don't ask me, I don't even like those, I always take a cheap cheeseburger and a hotdog

@Jenayah I see

SQB
@Jenayah if you've never had them, get them for dinner tonight. They're delicious.

But everytime I can make a reference to a movie/book/etc, I do

yumm :)
I will be getting hash browns in 1 1/2 hours for breakfast :)

SQB
No need for Mickey D, either. McDonald's doesn't even have them in The Netherlands.

@SQB if I find them elsewhere than Albert Heijn, sure

@SQB that's interesting

SQB
@Jenayah what's your local supermarket, then?

8:25 AM
is the MCDs tailored to Dutch people? I remember ordering an Arabian Big Mac, when I was in Egypt (in Cairo) ...

@SQB Lidl, Dirk, whatever is not that freaking band of thieves
@JalapenoNachos I've heard it's tailored for each country, for instance in France it tastes better than in the US (supposedly) because French people expect more or something

SQB
@JalapenoNachos A bit. They have a McKroket from time to time (search for kroket, then imagine that burger-shaped on a bun) and Old Amsterdam (hard cheese) on some of the burgers.
Best thing about French Mickey D is that they serve beer.
Then again, best thing about France is that they offer so much more then Mickey D.

@SQB the only remaining problem is that well, you have to deal with French people :p

@Jenayah I see - yeah the MCDs in many European countries I've been to ... were really awesome.
nice @SQB :)

@JalapenoNachos awesome?

8:36 AM
awesome = really good :)

I mean, I said it was 'tailored' to fit the French, but it's still your very basic fast-food exploiting students and stuff
Oh, you meant the taste?

yeah, the taste
it exploits students?
how so?

hi all

Hi!
@JalapenoNachos lots of students take a part-time job at McDonald's, but it's not really well paid, the conditions are awful and a bunch of so-called managers only care about how much Big Macs the shop sells in one day
'course it depends on where you go, but they will always have other students willing to take the job, so there's not much done to ease it for them
@TheLethalCarrot it's just above in the comments

Oh, still makes sense to have it in the answer though
And it's 42 hours before they can accept

8:49 AM

Q: What 1990's scifi book was about a fighter pilot who meets an alien race and averts war with them?

decuserNot a lot to go on, but... I seem to remember a guy in a space fighter going out to meet a fleet of alien invaders and somehow avoiding all out war. I also remember something about the guy having a sister and that she was important to the story. It's not Armor, Ender, or Starship Troopers, but it...

Aw, crap

@Jenayah I hear ya :(
a student working at MCDs told me the other night about how physically demanding the job is ... I feel bad, because I only see the cashier part of his entire routine ...
I'm not around when they cook and clean and do the garbage, etc.
Oo and our MCDs had no air-conditioning this summer
it was broken
us customers were so hot just from sitting and eating - I can't imagine how the employees felt ...

@JalapenoNachos yeah that, and most of all the boiling oil
A lot of them weren't trained for long enough and they end up with burns

ah, geez :(

yeah...
students are expendable
3

yeah ...

8:55 AM
and not the Stallone-Schwarzenegger expendable way :/

That, plus the rude customers

yeah :(
@Jenayah we have a burger shop (not McDonald's) here in our city that no longer has cashiers - we order from these kiosks and pay with credit cards and then go to the waiting area for our foods ... it's nice ...
would-be cashiers now do more efficient work ...
no more long and crowded lines either ... it's like magic ...

I'm so torn about robo-cashiers. On the one hand, it's a good thing that lines go faster and rude customers don't have to face cashiers anymore (and reversely), and it should ease the workload of said clerks who can now cook stuff, clean etc with a bit less pressure. On the other hand we know perfectly well it's not done and robots are just here because they don't get wages nor are in an union
In short: like always, in the end, it sucks.

yeah :(

SQB
9:11 AM
I like the robo-cashiers at McD's, since both my kids want special orders (one a hamburger with just meat and ketchup, the other a cheeseburger with just meat and cheese), so I can order that myself without holding up a huge line behind me. Also, it gives me time to think about what I want to order.

@SQB are we talking about the same robo-cashiers? There are still cashiers at McDo I reckon? They take cash, hand your food and all
From what I read, Jalapenos was describing a no-cashier-at-all? Like, the food gets on a rolling track like the luggage at the airport or something?

SQB
@Jenayah there still are, but both in The Netherlands and in France (well, in Lille) there are large touchscreens where you can order.

@SQB yeah, at my town too

SQB
Ah, I thought they were talking about something like that, not about one without any cashiers.

The touchscreens are okay, I reckon

SQB
9:14 AM
Advantage is that I could set them to Dutch.

same reasons as you

SQB
And you can set them to French over here.
Of spreek je al Nederlands?

@SQB gné?

"gné?" = "what the f** are you saying? Man, I don't understand a thing. What was that?", but shorter. You have to imagine the frown that goes with it.
@SQB ahahah
actually, yeah, some words
I've learned a while ago that when you deal with foreigners, the first thing to learn is some curse words, so that you know what you're called behind your back
Funny, all those I've learned, I've heard my room "mates" saying them while looking at me.
Unfortunately, I can't really use those for everyday interaction.
So I'm sticking with English, which everyone here speaks - seriously, it's impressive when you come over from France where people react to "I don't speak French, sorry" with "Aaah but there is problème because I not spik innglishe non plus"

SQB
9:35 AM
@Jenayah half of Dutch curse words are diseases.

@SQB teef?

SQB
@Jenayah that would be ehr... a female dog.
And rather rude.

That's the (untranslated) one I hear the most.
I've heard the translated version too, though.

SQB
You should record it surreptitiously for translation later.

@SQB staying too close to these geese sparks thoughts of bashing their heads against the doorframe. So I think I'll just keep on staying away from the sewage.

SQB
9:41 AM
@Jenayah so the feeling is mutual?

@SQB oh yeah
Hostilities have been on since I've been rejected upon asking for bit less loud music, more cleaning after their parties (who doesn't like a sticky beer-stained floor on the morning, with the nice sound of abandoned crisps under your shoes?), and bandwidth, since they boasted about having such great and cheap mobile plans with data
War, however, started when my food started to disappear from my shelf of the fridge.
I worked for that food. Them geese laughed at me where shocked when I asked why no one among them did an internship/summer job for experience/money.
I'm fine with them spending their parent's money on parties, alochol and whatever. Their business, not mine. But my food is my money that I worked for. So f*** off, ladies.
Sorry for the wrath.

SQB
10:07 AM
Got good locks?

@SQB locks wouldn't do much, I only have one shelf on the fridge

SQB
Ah.

Blocking the entire fridge would kind of go against the "don't touch other's food without authorization" policy of mine

Buy a locked container and put everything in that, or a mini fridge and lock that

@TheLethalCarrot mate I'm here for three remaining weeks, not spending money on that stuff
and in any case, there is no way I'm spending extra money because some people are assholes

10:17 AM
Oh only 3 weeks, yeah I wouldn't worry too much

SQB
O yeah, no need for three more weeks.
Too bad you didn't get a bike, though.

10:36 AM
@SQB Honestly, if it had been longer, I think I'd have just found another tenant and packed my bags for somewhere else
@SQB well, wouldn't really have known what to do with it

@Jenayah Learn how to manual, of course!

@Jenayah Whoa, what's the context? Is this at your home or at work?

@b_jonas "house a room of which I'm renting". Definitely not "home".

Ah.
So what's the solution? Have you found a better home?

10:52 AM
@b_jonas solution is 'let it go until I get the f*** away from here, they're not worth the trouble'

Language.

@Edlothiad that's what the stars are for, Cap ;D
Aw, the above message. My bad.
Can someone replace dat word with stars?
I don't know if it's appropriate to self-flag for this...

While stars hide the letters that make up the word, the word is still there. One should refrain from using the language. Not simply half-mask words.

@Edlothiad lack of a better word? :p most polite adjective I could find
On a more serious tone, duly noted, though

Also... chat, officially, does not have a blanket ban on swearing.

11:01 AM
Chat is under the same rules as the rest of the network. So yes it does

@Mithrandir "blanket ban" = "not total ban" from Google results - that what you meant?

@Jenayah Right.

ok, didn't know the idiom :)

@TheLethalCarrot I was in favor of a blanket ban, but it's worth noting that officially, policy is, as determined on meta, that the occasional swear word on chat is allowed. Excessive swearing is a no-no.

@Mithrandir then let's not talk about my roommates any more :D

11:05 AM
Unless it's changed and I haven't noticed, that's how it's been being done.

And cue to rather innocent, non-polemical topics. Whaddya think about pineapple pizza? :p flies away

@Mithrandir The CoC meta posts all state chat is now to be treated the same as the rest of the network

@Jenayah I hate it, it's the only pizza my sister will eat.

@Mithrandir 4 cheese & bacon for the win

Yeah I can't eat that, but I'll go for mushroom or olive with extra cheese any time. Unfortunately, actually getting good pizza at all is very difficult here.

11:10 AM
@Mithrandir oh? Is there no way to make your own then? (even if I guess not every house has the right brick-oven for pizza, but still :p )

Yeah no. That wouldn't go well.

@Jenayah Re McDonalds, in those shops there are still cashiers, but fewer of them are required for serving the same amount of customers, because customers can order in the on-site touchscreen kiosks or even in advance via some mobile phone program.
I've first seen these types of McDonalds restaurants abroad, but now there's at least one in Budapest too, specifically on Móricz Zsigmond körtér.

@Mithrandir what about talking/bribing your family into doing it? :p

I've used the kiosk to order in a McDonalds in Sweden, in Austria, and here in Hungary.

@Jenayah The only one who'd have the skill to do that would be my mother, and she's allergic to wheat and dairy.

11:14 AM
In Sweden, I think Max (another fast-food restaurant chain) started the touchscreen kiosk system before McDonalds, but I'm not sure, I might have just seen it in a Max earlier.

@Mithrandir wow, being both a good cook and allergic to wheat must suck big time :/

(I really do need to learn how to cook stuff at some point, though.)

It's still sort of a novelty to me, just like the self-service checkout stations that replace some cashiers in the few big Tesco supermarkets that have them.

@b_jonas I don't think I've ever seen this.

Although Sweden has a more advanced system too in some other brand of supermarket, where people who pre-register as frequent customer can carry a tiny handheld computer inside the store with a barcode reader, display, and a few buttons, and as they shop they use the big button and scan a barcode to add an item to the list, or the small buttons and a barcode to delete an item, and then in the common case checking out is very quick, because you don't unpack and scan all your items at checkout,
you've already scanned their barcodes as you put it to your trolley. This wouldn't yet work in Hungary, because it makes it even harder to notice thiefs than with the Tesco self-checkout.

11:18 AM
@b_jonas is that based on... trust?

@Jenayah No, it's based on occasional partial or full checks.

@b_jonas Lol this is exists all over the UK. It's not exactly a marvel technology

@b_jonas that... still seems to imply trust at some point

At checkout, you may be randomly selected for a partial or full check, more often if you're a newly registered (and so less trusted) customer, or if you had stolen before. The check works by an employee scanning some or all of the items in your trolley, to make sure you've scanned them already.
Comparing the barcodes with your list is of course automated, so the check is still pretty quick, a full check is as quick as a traditional checkout with a cashier who uses barcode reader.
@Jenayah It's all a tradeoff of having to employ fewer people to more stolen goods. Employees are not payed well in Hungary, and there's a lot of shoplifting, so it's almsot always cheaper to have cashiers.

@b_jonas ok ok

11:23 AM
The self-checkout stations are in between, easier to control. I haven't explained how that one works, it's tricky and not obvious if you haven't seen one.
@Edlothiad The technology is not the problem.
Even with a human cashier, shoplifters do sometimes steal some goods. Like the stereotypical hiding an item inside their coat.
So there are security guards looking for signs of that, and cameras.
@Jenayah They are somewhat tailored to country, but not very much. They and other popular fast-food reataurant brands like Burger King and KFC get a lot of traffic from tourists who know the brand from their country.

@b_jonas a lot, sure, but I wouldn't say it's the major part of clients?
At least, outside the most touristic spots like Paris and coasts?

@Jenayah Sure, but a lot of cities get foreign tourists, sometimes traveling for some big event or for business.
Not just pleasure travelers, business ones too.

SQB
@b_jonas a supermarket chain in The Netherlands (Jumbo) checks every self-checkout customer, but only a couple of items.

@b_jonas well yeah, but I'd wager a guess that more than 50% of the clients are locals

@SQB I haven't seen that system.
@Jenayah That's likely, yes.

SQB
11:32 AM
Others do the same as what you said and check some customers at random.

@Jenayah Which is why some words on the big menu signs are written in Hungarian (or the local language), although KFC also provides an English menu in a laminated sheet as well as a Hungarian one.
But the big menu signs have pictures, and the cashiers are helpful so most people just ask questions and point even if they don't speak Hungarian.
And much of the food have brand names like "Big Mac" that mean more or less the same in every country
and people can guess what fries are even if they don't know what "chips" means
from the picture
@SQB Our Tesco have some specific items that are likely stolen, especially liquors in small bottles and memory cards, that are always checked by an employee,
and this is enforced because the bottles have a physically attached RFID gadget on their neck and the SD card is in a box with an RFID tag, these raises an alarm at the RFID scanners at the exit of the self-checkout stations and cashiers, and the RFID gadget is hard to remove and from the bottle and the box is hard to open without the special tool the employee has.
At the self-checkout, you have to show these items to an employee, but the self-checkout machine can warn you about this when you scan the item.
There are also some stores with no self-checkout but RFID alarms on many of the expensive items, and a scanner that raises the alarm at the exit.
And there's one store chain, namely the Decathlon sports store, that now has RFID tags on every item they sell, even the cheapest ones, which makes the checkout at cashiers no longer use barcode reader, because the RFID of all your items are read by an RFID reader, with a large box where you can just put all your items.
That one also seems futuristic.
It only works because they sell only their own brands, no third party stuff.
And it's an international chain, so all their items are already manufactured with the RFID tag attached to it.
The shop doesn't have to attach them.

SQB
11:47 AM
Yeah, we have that at the Hema department store in The Netherlands. Not for pricing though, only for theft-prevention.

There are book stores with RFID tags in most of their items, but they still sell pens and small stuff like that with no tag. Decathlon is the only store I've seen so far that uses them for checkout.
Mind you, it's already a big chain. They have three big stores in the agglomerations around Budapest, and now two new smaller stores inside the city, and I think they also have some stores in other big cities in Hungary.
And they're multinational.

@b_jonas oh my, Decathlon and their RFIDs.

And this system is used in all their stores.

If you don't cut these off, they still make detectors buzz in other stores.
Fortunately, it's a known issue so most shops realize the problem, BUT.
I was in this shop once. Important detail: I always forget to cut these things, and on a daily basis, almost all my clothes are Decathlon.

@Jenayah ouch.

11:54 AM
So there was this shop, the detectors of which were kind of... old ones.
And the security guard was zealous.
Had to cut the one in my shirt, the pants one, and even the rainjacket one (you know, that thing which is always stuffed in my bag but I forgot about it, which took us a good time to figure out what was still buzzing)

@Jenayah And from your backpack and shoes too?

@b_jonas my backpack isn't Decathlon, and IIRC, I had to cut the shoes one for a previous shop or something

I actually have a Decathlon backpack now. I take it to work daily, and almost everywhere else I go outside of my home, unless I take a bigger backpack.

@b_jonas well actually, I have one of these small 5€-backpacks that were a buzz 7-8 years ago. They're useful!
It's just not my everyday backpack, though I'll happily say that one can go for their hiking backpacks. They're good ones.

I take a bigger but less comfy backpack on Wednesdays, when I go to the swimming pool, since I insist on the luxury of taking a huge thick fluffy comfy towel to dry off afterwards, which takes a whole lot of space but isn't heavy. And obviously I have a large comfy tourist backpack for most traveling.
Yeah, hiking backpack, not tourist backpack.
That's what it should be called.
I also have an extra small backpack, but I only use it for some celebratory occasions.

12:02 PM
@b_jonas mine actually has an isotherm pocket, which is obviously not really effective but still handy

My current everyday backpack and my current hiking backpack are both from Decathlon, but my swimming backpack isn't.
scifi.stackexchange.com/a/156316/4918 a nice Jason Baker answer

Every Jason Baker answer is a nice answer, just about ;)

SQB
12:19 PM
@Null why did you convert this answer to a comment? It is a (sparse) answer in its own right: Q: "What is the meaning of the symbols on the Stormtrooper's left pauldron?" A: "This is in fact the brand for the UK Garrison of the 501st Legion [...]"
Hm, can't ping Null here. Flagged the answer instead.

12:39 PM
Gallifreyan has made a change to the feeds posted into this room

@Feeds that the new question oneboxing thingy?

12:54 PM
New proposal for character building, backed by the world building community: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/119739/…

:46369100 ?

@Jenayah I wrote something, then realized it was unfounded. So I removed it.

@Alex about what?

9 mins ago, by Jenayah
@Feeds that the new question oneboxing thingy?

@Alex is there some kind of issue with that? :|

12:59 PM
@Jenayah No. I just misinterpreted the evidence that I had looked at.

@Alex ok

Or more correctly, misread.
And we can't have my mistakes lying around for anyone to see.

@Alex mistakes are part of who we are! :p Ok, that was enough for the "philosophical minute of the day"

@Jenayah This whetted my appetite. Can I get the philosophical hour now?

1:13 PM
@Jenayah Can't have a good philosophy discussion under such strict rules. Imagine where the world would be today if Stack Exchange existed 2500 years ago: "Socrates, that's a link-only answer" "Socrates, you violated our Be Nice policy" "Socrates, I think that's more of a comment than an answer" "Socrates, your tags are confusing me" etc.

@Alex ahahah
their chat then?

@Jenayah I don't know anyone there.

@Alex well, that's the opportunity then

@Jenayah Yeah, I think it would go over great if I just pop in and say, "Hey guys let me tell you why you're all wrong about everything you've ever thought about. Bye."

SQB
Since activity in the room has increased lately, we've switched to a message feed for main site questions. The user is @Babelfish.

1:21 PM
@Edlothiad that was uncalled for.

@Alex I don't know, that seems like ever philosophy class I've ever had
:46369757 ?
@SQB oh, ok! /ignore @Babelfish

SQB
You have to wait until Babelfish says something, then ignore them.
I think.

nah, you can ignore them if you find the user

SQB
That's the harder way.

@SQB excellent

1:26 PM
@Jenayah Philosophy is not what you think; it's how you think.

@Alex I think staying away from Philosophy.SE and basically everything labelled "philosophy" works great for me :p

@Jenayah Well just your luck that there's a secret philosopher in the Science Fiction & Fantasy chat room. (But hey, you brought it up.)

@Alex I know, I know

Law of CourseThe story is about a man who stumbles upon some alien tech - I recall a lighter that just produces a flame without any mechanical parts.... Q: Shouldn't Farquaad have been a Prince Regent in Fiona's Prologue?
