Why don't they teach them basic healing spells? Like how to mend a broken bone or heal a cut. Ok maybe it's strictly on the 7th year for which we kno...

Q: Quarterly Chat Name Rotation Q4 2017

CreationEdgePer discussion in chat and reception on my answer to the chat name suggestions, it appears that there's strong support for rotating the chat name and corresponding feed names on a regular basis. If you're still interested in that idea, you'll want to upvote it because it's getting negative response suddenly.

@CreationEdge Wouldn't that mean the link to the chat room would change each time the name is changed?

user132126
Nope.

@CreationEdge But it would mean that some one that lost the link for some reason might not know the name of the chat room once it was changed.

KristineI read this when I was a kid, so some time in the 80's, may have come out earlier, though. @CreationEdge And if I loose the link that is loss of the room is it not? If the name has change to Chicken Little, then how do I proceed to find the room? that link did not work for me btw

user132126
No...

user132126
The room # never changes.

user132126
It literally doesn't matter what you put after it.

1:38 AM
@CreationEdge I now see it was a prototype
But I do not have any part of the link if it was accidentally wiped on my computer

user132126
What does that matter?

user132126
If you click the chat link from the dropdown it takes you here: chat.stackexchange.com/…

user132126
And it's sorted by activity and says "General discussion" in the subject, and we'd make pretty broad announcements about it.

user132126
So regular users would know how to navigate to it, no problem. New users would never know the difference.

@CreationEdge I think we can not get on the same page here. My last try :) If I have no links at all then I have nothing to link to except that page if I can remember that sequence in the first place. That page gives a list of what all the chat rooms? If yes, then and the chat room has been renamed to Green Hills of Earth. Just exactly what gives me the answer?

user132126
If as a regular chatter you have a catastrophic system loss and have to navigate to the chat from scratch, and somehow weren't aware of the (likely well announced) impending name change, you'd still be able to find it the same way a new user did: The description of the room and the fact that it's the first one in the list.

Here’s an example. Let’s say a site has a main chat room, and it gets renamed to something else.
Your autocomplete for searches will still have the original name. If you go to that URL, you should automatically be redirected to the current page.

user132126

Q: story on TV about people trapped at motel and they all turn out to be the same person

Q: How did this character in Unsong fake his death?

b_jonasIn Unsong, But much later in the book we find out that he's been hiding under a fake name. What exactly happened in the duel?

@Aegon The first is asking about when they are celebrated, what calendar system do they use, what if there's a different calendar on that planet. The second asks if there are any
Anyone who VTC as dupe needs to re-evaluate their decision, and start actually reading the questions before they slap a vote.
Also, @Aegon, I wanted to ask why you pressed "No action needed" here you could have edited, or made a comment about sources, or upvoted the existing comment, UV'd, DV'd. There was no need to press "No Action Needed"
@Mithrandir, you should definitely have left a comment here and here pointing to the guide to get more information. Story ID questions (and any post for that matter) should really get "No Action Needed" unless in very rare circumstances, between 10 and 20% of our First posts get NAA'd, this is too high

8:06 AM
@Edlothiad That would be because when I flag such answers as VLQ, they get declined. Didn't feel like upvoting the comment just to get "reviewed" as it doesn't mean anything in practice. And as for Downvoting, why should I downvote a speculative answer when there is another speculative answer on the same question by none other than myself? I'd be a hypocrite if I did that. UV, it wasn't that good.

@Aegon Comment? The question needed editing as well?

@Edlothiad As for slapping VTC, that tends to happen a lot around here. I do recall you doing the same here. scifi.stackexchange.com/posts/159110/revisions . And afterwards refusing to admit they weren't dupes, for God knows what reasons. Relax, mistakes happen, that's why we have reopen votes

@Edlothiad Didn't feel like it.

@SQB VTRO, and I will too. I'm assuming we have Aegon's vote

@SQB I agree in principle :)

@Aegon Hmm this seems like an easy way to let low quality posts through the barrier which shouldn't be the case.

SQB
VTRO'd that Star Trek holidays question.

@Edlothiad Ideally I wouldn't. I have had flags declined to the point that I was suspended from flagging so now I just avoid flagging unless it is absolutely clear that answer is shiet.

SQB
@Aegon I agree with that.

8:12 AM
@Aegon I still stand by the fact that was a dupe. It covered why Eunuchs could be distinguished as Eunuchs. I think the particular should be duped of the general. Saying "I slapped a VTC on there" is not true as I had spent time reading both questions and answer and decided they were duplicates. Whether with extra clarification or edit changed the question, that happened after I VTC'd

@Edlothiad of course you did ;)

SQB
I've had Not-An-Answer flags declined because if you look at it sideways and squint real hard, you might see the idea the poster had.
Also, there's a new Death Grips E.P. out.
I know @Slytherincess likes some of their tracks.
@WadCheber!

Let's not go on about that however. It's done. I doubt it will be appreciated or will be constructive. As I said back then as well, no extra clarification was needed for people familiar with the work at least.

Howdy

SQB
How you doin'?

8:14 AM
@SQB @Aegon, there's more than just the UV, DV and flag buttons... You can always comment on a post. One is never perfect enough not to merit any of the actions. You should really be leaving a comment on almost any new post to teach the new user of our ways and keep them interested in SFF:SE

No complaints, aside from our exile. You?

@Aegon Well I've read and seen all the main Canon stuff, so I guess that claim isn't true

SQB
@Edlothiad new users, yes. I often do that. But sometimes there's some drive-by crap that just needs to be gone post haste.
@Edlothiad I've added .

@SQB Well then you flag. Don't press No action needed
@SQB Cool :)

SQB
@Edlothiad I don't. I skip if I think my flag will be of no use.

8:16 AM
@SQB Also good. People don't "skip" enough. They're too obsessed with silly badges

@Edlothiad Then there is probably some other issue. You didn't understand what the OP was asking and you still think it was about "How eunuchs can be told apart". If you had seen all of the canon works and read the works, you would have known why Varys is a special case.
In any case however, that discussion is not constructive or helpful
I understand you are upset that I made some apparently wrong choice.
I hope you can understand why I made them and how I am just another human

@Aegon I'm not upset, I understand yours was most likely just an honest mistake, but from the names of the close voters, too many people are just VTC happy. Because it gets them a badge.

I manually checked the counts of the people with the Marshal badge

And how doth one doeth that?
What I'm saying is I can't see the helpful flag count of different users, only my own, and was asking if it was a mod tool

Go to badge page => go to each person's profile => go to activity tab => look at count
@Edlothiad helpful count is public

@Mithrandir One asks when they are celebrated (according to Earth time, or according to local time), while the other asks if they are celebrated at all (and if so, which ones). Not the same thing at all.

That's why I edited the title.

SQB
Closing them the other way around won't work either, since the now closed question just states that they are celebrated.

I'm not saying all of those tags have to be purged from the system - they need to be redefined to narrow their scope, so they actually become useful.

Q: Who drew this hollow Moon theory picture?

DimsI would like to use this hollow Moon picture on my site (from elarcadelosdioses.wordpress.com): Here is a similar contrast photo of the Moon from space.com: It appears often and w/o any credentials. Depicting some engines inside of the Moon and looks medieval. Who is the author?

@Adamant, on that question that is on hold, "The Lost Room" - imdb.com/title/tt0830361 meets everything the Q remembered, with the exception of the Good Fellow thing. That may be memory crossover. So if nothing more it may be able to prompt more memories from the OP. IF memory serves me Elle Fanning plays the missing daughter. As I said, it may be hard to believe that the OP could have forgotten that much ... but just in case.

does anyone know if there's a chatroom around here for discussing Alien:Covenant? I just saw it yesterday, and I have a lot of things I want to say about it

Create one.
Call it Covenant, for instance. ;)

Q: How does Pararibulitis in Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency work?

TGarAmanda in the American TV show, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency has this Pararibulitis disease. I am curious how does this disease work. In the show, we see that Amanda has some visions and she is really desperate and needs to take a pill. I can imagine that the visions aren't exactly p...

Q: Old short story, last human is connected to a spaceship that must defend the man at all cost

Revengex MoonLooking for a science fiction short story I read a while back, where the last human is connected to his star ship which is programmed to save him as much as possible, in a time where humanity is hunted down by other space faring species. @DaaaahWhoosh Ah, just scrolled up and saw your post :-)
To what extent does Covenant continue the origin story that was started in Prometheus?

so, have you seen it? Or are thinking about seeing it and want a review?

I get the impression from reviews that it's more like the early films, so less concerned with the deeper questions.

@DaaaahWhoosh @JohnRennie

@JohnRennie it is an indirect sequel. You get to see what happens next, but from the point of view of different characters

@Gallifreyan I've read that, but it doesn't really answer my question.

Not sure if we have a general spoiler room.

I rewatched Prometheus yesterday, and actually i really enjoyed it. The plotting is rubbish but the film was overall more enjoyable than I remembered.
But for me the interesting bit is the Engineers. Why did they decide to wipe out life on Earth? What had gone wrong?
So that's the story I'm really interested in, and the impression I get from the reviews is that Covenant doesn't really deal with that.

oh, Covenant deals with it all right
just not in a way that you would find satisfying

Hmm, OK. I can see you desparately trying to avoid any spoilers :-)

@SQB It's okay to answer a question in the comments, though it's generally not recommended. It's a common practice if someone knows the answer (or part of it) but doesn't have time to write a proper answer.

@JohnRennie I don't want to recommend the movie because I found it to have too many flaws, but I thought it did a good job of wrapping up the loose ends of Prometheus and tying them into the original Alien. And maybe I'm just being too harsh on it

Thanks. A friend is organising a trip to go see it on Friday. It sounds as if it's worth going, rather than waiting for the Bluray.

@Gallifreyan I was asking about that, if there is one I'd like to visit it, but if not I don't think I want to set one up
