12:00 AM
It was coincidence. When I got them, my fiancée couldn't take the day to go down to the breeder's with me (a 5 hour drive!). So when I got there, as agreed, I called her on Facetime and let her see how the different pups behaved. I was using ballroom dances to describe their behavior, since that was a quick, easy way to do it.
I told her, "This one seems a bit more thoughtful, but can move quickly sometimes, kind of like a tango. This one is slower, like a rumba. This one jumps around and moves fast like a mambo..."

> I was using ballroom dances to describe their behavior, since that was a quick, easy way to do it.
not for 99% of people :p

@Riker Well, she's a teacher now, but at the time we were both amateur ballroom competition dancers.

oh, cool
what do you do atm?
and what's your fiancée teach?
also TIL there's a difference between fiancée and fiancé

@Riker Ballroom dance. I meant she's a ballroom dance teacher. She also does bookkeeping full time.

ah nice
did you meet through dance?

12:05 AM
It's kind of hard to figure what I do. I'm sort of semi-retired. Now most of my time is focused on getting our new house built, making the driveway that goes 1/3 of a mile back to the house, then also over a creek to the old barn on the back part of the lot. When that's done, I'll be doing more real estate investing.
Yes, we met through dance.
So what do you do?

3:12 AM
@Slytherincess @Catija, if I may, what is the goal for such a dialogue? What would be the imperative for pursuing a subject that the powers that are powers in fact, have said should be closed. Do we we see any dysfunction going on in this Chat room? I have not seen anyone afraid, I have seen reasonable people accepting the current status and working within the constraints to establish a compromise culture that fits the constraints and allows us to be who we are, while accepting those constraints.

@EnigmaMaitreya as far as I can tell, no one has said that discussion of when/if/how to use flags or how to restrict/intentionally derail problematic topics is "closed". If we don't learn from our mistakes or plan for them to reoccur, we can not prevent them or address them appropriately.
I have seen several people say that they're afraid to chat here lest they get banned, which implies at the least that people are uncomfortable... I've also seen users state that they don't know where to draw the line or what to do if they think a conversation is bad...
You mentioned "constraints" several times but do you know what they are?

3:29 AM
@Catija There is one constraint, we do NOT repeat the previous incarnation of this Chat. When pressed in the meta Q/A they did offer up a history behind why what happened, happened and then said in very clear terms, The discussion was over. IF people are afraid of getting baned for chatting here and do not articulate it in a format that can be addressed then how can there be a reasonable discussion on it?
@Catija I think I have seen @Ixrec, @Gallifreyan and others address the Flagging and I think we all have agreed for the time being to present a low profile that runs a low risk of anyone have a valid cause to flag anything. I have said, and firmly believe that Time tends to heal a lot of things. Obviously I do not have a means to monitor the number of flags being generated in this char, but others doe and I trust them to manage the situation so we do not repeat the errors of the previous ....
@Catija ...incarnation of this chat.

3:45 AM
Yeah, none of that is specific and that's my point... The CMs said that *they* were finished talking about it... meaning they don't want to argue about whether it was warranted or listen to people complaining that Mos should be brought back. That doesn't mean that users can't ask for help understanding what the rules are. That would be counterproductive.
If people are worried about flagging because it draws attention or are worried of otherwise acting to stop conversations they're uncomfortable with, that's not going to help this room be any more successful than the previous one.
People aren't getting banned for asking how not to get suspended... they're getting suspended for not listening when the other users around them, room owners, mods or even just other regular uses ask (or tell) them to change the subject. As far as I know, no one has been suspended for honestly asking for help.
In fact... this very discussion is the sort of thing that might be better off in a room much like the one I was talking about. While it's not heavily populated in here now, if it were, this would be detracting from normal, topical conversation... and there are probably many users not interested in it... so if we were in a "room to discus chat moderation"... or a "room to discuss how to keep the new general SFF chat clean"... it would only be seen by those users truly interested in discussing it.

@Catija imho, I think a lot of the problematic users have stopped, either voluntarily or involuntarily

You can't exactly say that time heals all things... Mos was lovely for about 6 months after the last time it was frozen... and then people started getting lazy about bringing out the taco... and others stopped respecting what it meant.

I think some of it was people leaving when confrontation arose
not leaving forever, just in the moment

@Catija I agree with the low volume puting this in a meh maybe ok to talk about it.

@Riker That's irrelevant, really. They will likely come back, eventually... or more will replace them. If we don't plan for how to address it going forward, the room is doomed.

3:51 AM
so it wasn't reined in
@Catija true

@Catija But that is my point, time did heal the tension but there was a dive back into doing the things that was the problem. That is what needs to stop. We as a community need to stop making that step.

... which means we can't just ignore that it will happen again and say "we'll just always be careful"... history has already shown that to not be the case.
Anyway, bed now.

@Catija History showed we did not, it did not show we can/will not and later :)
@Riker I do not have the history (time here) you do, but I have seen your statement to be true ... far more than not true.

I don't have the full history either
this is been a thing for 2 years now?

@Riker I joined in maybe march? so I don't know for sure. I have seen a dramatic change in the conversation of this chat since the last event and I am not at all sure that change is bad? Said more directly, I am more inclined to fell this is how things should be
@Riker The meta explanation seems to suggest that ~2 years ago the room was closed then reopened against some peoples better judgment, then slamed to the ground just recently with a statement of DO NOT try to reincarnate this room(Mos). There was a public apology by one of the antagonist in meta.

@Tango I met my wife at a dance.

@Donald.McLean Cool.
How's life with you these days?

Busy. We just got back from the beach and I think I'm caught up at work. JWST was just shipped to Texas to prepare it for launch.
It's hard to believe that we've been in the new house almost a year now.
And we're taking dance lessons again.

@Donald.McLean We're close to finishing our new place. Might even be done by the end of June. After that, we still have the barn to finish renovating, since, now, it's really charming in a Blair Witch Project kind of way. We're pretty sure that can be done early enough we can use it for the wedding in October if needed.
Glad to hear you're enjoying dance lessons again.

Oh, hello, @Tango. Haven't seen you in a while.

@Mithrandir I haven't been around in a while. The house we're building is 40 minutes from here. I'm usually up, making phone calls for research and getting materials and such, then I head out there and I'm there until sunset. The contractor is doing the house and I'm doing things like the roadway and other non-house stuff.

1:08 PM
@Tango It's a heady and exciting feeling watching the construction of your house nearing completion.

@Donald.McLean Yes, it is.
And some stages are weird. For instance, it was framed in and had the plywood on and the trades were in to do the rough-ins and then I ran all the CAT6 and coax. During that time, a couple weeks, you could see the whole floor from any point by looking through stud walls. Then drywall goes up and it's exciting, but suddenly feels claustrophobic because it's rooms and not a big space.

Q: How does the wizarding economy work in Harry Potter?

SleepingGodLet me start of this question by clarifying some things about the population of wizarding Britain. According to the answers to this question, nobody asserts that the population of wizarding britain exceeds more than a few thousand. Yet there seem to be thousands of people who work in the Ministry...

@Donald.McLean: Here's one of the latest pictures, after they finished the stone on the tower. The painters haven't started yet. It's NOT going to be that color brown!

@Tango When we did the pre-drywall inspection, I took pictures of everything so that I would know where all the wires and plumbing were. Then after the drywall went in, it was Twilight Zone surreal having naked rooms with nothing.

1:12 PM
That looks remarkable. I could remark about it. And I will! It looks marvellous.
2

@Donald.McLean Exactly. You get used to all the wiring and seeing the "guts" of it all, then, poof, in a few days, it's all covered over. Taking the pictures was a good idea. I wish I had done that, but most of the wiring makes sense - going from the attic or crawl space down or up to the outlet. Sitll, that's a good idea.
@doppelgreener Thanks!

Don't forget the gargoyles.

@Tango Very cool. Our place is nowhere near that elaborate. And my wife would hate that color - most of the houses in our development are browns and tans. We're the only yellow house on the entire block.

I don't know if we'll have gargoyles or not. We have a 1/3 of a mile driveway. 1,100 feet of that is in a field out front before you hit the trees. In that field we have all the "No Trespassing" signs and after that, you get into the trees and there's a sharp turn. After that turn, we're going to have a cairn on each side of the driveway and put a dragon sitting on each cairn.
@Donald.McLean Ours will be mostly green. It wouldn't work in a city or suburb, but in the wooded area it'll be cool. Trim is a darker brown. I think of grayscales and browns, blacks, and whites as non-colors and don't like them, but the brown trim works. And notice the flat panels around the octagon window and the "bump out" on the left. That will look a bit Tudor, with stucco and trim.

@Tango That works too.
Depending on the landscape and your preferences, you could also have some Hokora on the road. And then a tunnel.

1:19 PM
@Gallifreyan gargoyles or grotesques? :D (gargoyles would be a great idea too)

@Tango Ahhhh, so that's not the final color scheme then. There was a green that was one of the options here and a few houses have it. I like many shades of green. I'll be interested in seeing the final result.

Those cairns are being built with rock I've pulled out of the ground on our lot. I'm going to put rebar into the ground and secure it with concrete, then use the rebar sticking up and drill holes through the rocks so I can make the cairns start with small stones on the bottom and big on top and they'll lean in toward the driveway a bit. They'll look impossible, like they have to be held up with magic.
@Donald.McLean Let me get a pic of the rendering, showing the final colors. The stone is wrong in it, since we changed to river rock (instead of square stone) after the rendering was done.

Beautiful!

@Tango Very nice!

I can't wait to see the finished product.

1:21 PM
@Gallifreyan Something like that might work. Good idea, thanks! But no tunnel - the driveway cost a lot! So much that I ended up buying a tractor to save money on not having to keep renting a Bobcat!
Thanks, guys! Yeah, we can't wait for it to be done! She'll move in first, and once her stuff is in, I'll move in. The wedding is in October.
It's also not as big as it looks - the architect was good at making it have a bigger scale.

@Tango Square footage?

@Donald.McLean About 2,000. The great room has a vaulted ceiling and is open to the 2nd floor, so sometimes people figure that area that's open as part of the 2nd floor. We have to make sure contractors realize that's not "floor" and for most, not an issue.

Q: Why isn't the Pope being translated?

David StarkeyIn the episode Extremis, the Pope shows up and is speaking his native language (naturally). However, his words are not being translated by the Tardis. Why is this?

@Tango We've got about 2450 in "official" space. We added a 2" extension on the rear of the house that added almost 200 sq ft. Money well spent.

@Donald.McLean Originally it was 7' deeper, as in back to front, but that was when I had to do some serious redesign for a number of reasons (that design would have cost a fortune!). When I did that I do wish I had made the section to the right of the tower, near that octagon window, about 2' wider, but it works fine as it is. I don't think we'll miss that. But it's better to add and not regret!
Sorry - I have to go. Time to meet someone out there, which means I'm likely out there until sunset now.

To be fair not everyone who uses the phrase "+1 for ..." is actually abusing the comments in place of up-voting. If you could replace the "+1" with something like "You have my respect" then it's probably just a turn of phrase. Although it's not strictly what comments are for and still subject to deletion.

@SQB Hehehe! Awwww. Thanks, buddy! I miss chatting with you :'(

@zabeus Their not abusing comments, they're just too chatty and don't contribute to the post. Comments are for cahtting about the post

Q: An anime I watched in the 80's I was too young to remember the name

Travis SorbecWhat I remember is that in the same movie every time the villains were defeated they came back in a new machine, I think they were all animal based but robots. They always had the same symbol somewhere on the robot. The good guys had robots too. I'm sure it was anime but it was in English. Any ...

Q: When are annual celebrations (holidays, birthdays) celebrated in the Star Trek Universe?

Bachrach44In the Star Trek universe we do see recognition of some holidays - Federation day, First contact day, and of course birthdays. When are they celebrated? Every planet has a different year, so do they go by the earth year? Year of the planet they're closest to? Does Kira celebrate a birthday every ...

@Edlothiad Comments aren't for chatting about the post, either: they're for suggesting improvements or requesting clarification, and from there a (brief) comment exchange might happen. If it becomes bigger though, it ought to move to chat.
"You have my respect for..." is just as chatty as "+1 for..."

Yes this is correct

chatty comments just don't bother me. sff has always seemed more lenient than other sites wrt comments and it makes for some good reading.
other sites usually have people arguing in comments which has to be cleaned up quickly

@zabeus it is. We allow jokes and stuff. Not +1 comments, though.

hence my assertion that not all +1 comments are equal (but Edlothiad knows that)

6:14 PM
Role-playing Games has super vigilant comment handling because we're part of a larger internet community that can and will have rabid arguments at the drop of a hat. That comment policy is necessary for us to remain an exception to that phenomenon.
A lot of our regulars really like the policy. (I'm included on that list.)

Q: Why Legolas didn't translate the password at Moria?

anakindchosenone05192005The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak friend and enter. Those words were written in elvish.When the Fellowship was in the Walls of Moria,Gandalf translates the password. However,Gandalf could not find out the password to open the door. Frodo tells Gandalf that it's a riddle and ask what's the...

@Edlothiad Good job, mate ;)
@doppelgreener I don't think it uses your bandwidth, but I could check that.

@Gallifreyan That's genearlly correct, just not in this case. Rabb.it offers Netflix as an option in its launchpad, but then refuses to actually let me engage the site because it's still "working on getting this site hopping again" or something. It recommends I use the Netflix extension for Chrome, which involves me streaming it from my own PC.

@doppelgreener Ouch.

I'll check out what it says if I'm using Firefox.
@Gallifreyan Hooray! I can rent out the film on Youtubes and share it!

6:27 PM
as long as you guys don't delete the "That's a very liberal interpretation of the word 'park'" comment I'm okay

@Babelfish awful question

[updates pin message]

@doppelgreener thanks for that :) (and the movie suggestion in the first place)

You're welcome

@doppelgreener ;) Thank you very much for not making me pull the same trick I did with Nausicaa.
@Ixrec Which one is that?

6:33 PM
@doppelgreener So what is your upload rate?

Q: Where do you park a Star Destroyer at the Death Star?

ChrisThe Death Star is a huge space station, literally the size of a moon. Now I know you can park TIE fighters and shuttles and even craft as big as the Millennium Falcon inside of the station. But when you see this photo: Where exactly do you park a Star Destroyer at the Death Star? In the first...

This is a very liberal interpretation of the word "Park". — Valorum Feb 28 '15 at 20:20
I think this is the single most-upvoted comment on the site

@Ixrec Got that one already upvoted, it turns out :D I think there was a SEDE query for the most upvoted comment.

I think so too

@Ixrec don't think so

6:37 PM
@doppelgreener Mine is just under 5Mb on average with ATT (DSL) at the moment. That would give me pause to host anything that required me to upload it.

@Ixrec @Mithrandir It's the 14th most-upvoted comment according to this query.

ah well

Without checking the query, I think it's this one
Let me know if this should be migrated to The Workplace. — Hannover Fist Sep 14 '15 at 17:43

@doppelgreener Also, if this works and a good way to get the movies we want is to do it this way, then I am not sure the burden should be placed on a single individual. As such I would be willing to share the cost.

6:40 PM
@Mithrandir I really, really love the answer to that one:
> Your boss will almost certainly use his force-powers to crush your windpipe. You won't be able to pretend to be dying because you'll be too busy actually dying.

@doppelgreener That's even worse than mine, and I didn't think it gets worse than my connection.

@EnigmaMaitreya It's £4, not even worth fussing about. I appreciate the thought, though. :)

@doppelgreener 3.85Mb upload so below 1080p recommendation speed

But if you're in London sometime, you could buy me a coffee or a beer. :D

@Mithrandir good call, I think the query I'm thinking of predates that force choking question

6:42 PM
@EnigmaMaitreya I have 100 Gbps to 1 Tbps internet cause of the uni.
With proper warning I could host it if necessary.

@doppelgreener That might take a while, My wife is rooted to her garden and the familiarity of her routine. I am not inclined to leave her alone anymore.
@Adamant Ah the advantages :)

@doppelgreener No wait, mine is worse. This sucks, I didn't think it could get worse.

@Adamant Right now the plan is I rent it from Youtube and share that via Rabb.it, but if you have Netflix and Chrome and you'll be available on June 3rd 9pm UTC+0, I'd be happy to let you share it to Rabb.it to stream it for us and save me the £4. :D

@Gallifreyan 2.3Mb download?

@Gallifreyan Your upload rate's almost twice as good, but yes that download rate is horrifying. ;_;
(Is Gallifreyan a Turkish Time Lord?)

6:46 PM
It's usually better though, it's because I'm over my quota.

@doppelgreener I have Netflix and Chrome and 900 Gbps upload ;-=

Q: 1990s Aliens crash land in woods and enters family house

BrownmambaI saw this show in the 90's of aliens crashing near the woods. The family is recording them with a camera. They eventually make it into the house. I believe it was on KCOP-TV. It was most likely a TV movie. Any help would be great! Thanks

@doppelgreener I'm just studying here ;)

I have no clue what my upload is but I doubt it's good enough

@Adamant Then you have everything available provided you can make it. If you cannot, I'll rent it from Youtube for us. :D
So we've now got a plan A and a plan B.

6:47 PM
I think I have to change my name so that people don't assume I know something about Doctor Who or even that I watched the 2017 series.

Mine as long as we are showing and telling :) beta.speedtest.net/result/6320542376

I haven't watched the 2017 series either

my gut feeling is not many people are actually going to leap to that conclusion

@EnigmaMaitreya [grabby hands] ;_;

And again, yes the cost of renting isn't a problem but I am willing to share in that as long as we improve the quality of life here.

@Edlothiad yeah this one was pointed out above

@Edlothiad Slowpoke :)

@Adamant What uni is that?! That's insane!

@Adamant I've updated the pin message. Is that OK with you?

@Gallifreyan I was busy

7:10 PM
What's unclear here?

7:20 PM
I just realised - with the new Witcher series, people will finally start asking questions.
I'll be able to reach 10k, somewhere around 2020.

@Gallifreyan from the comment discussion it looks like they seem to be under some weird assumption Legolas would of course have read out the password at some point automatically

Q: A Novel about Alien races "helping" Earth, but it is actually a galactic poker game

MontyThreeCardBasically the plot goes like this (As far as I can remember). The Earth is discovered by a group of Galactic civilizations, and is encouraged to join. We begin to download massive amounts of information from the different civilizations, and as the story goes on, the main character (whom I belie...

@Gallifreyan it's just a dreadful question. Why didn't A do B it would've ended the movie quicker
@Gallifreyan and here I am at 11k thanks to all the recent Tolkien HNQs

8:07 PM
@Edlothiad I've had a taste of HNQ with my recent Harry Potter answer - ~65 upvotes for 5 minutes of effort put into it. I'll procure more of the HP books and answer more HP questions, maybe I'll catch you somewhere around 12k.

@Gallifreyan: I must have missed your reference to Gideon, but there was one thing that was unique about the last chat room that seems gone now.

Hum, the last 3 or 4 episodes of this season of Lucifer has really upped their game entertainment wise.

@Gallifreyan: Also, yes, I have a tractor now. Limited on river digging. We have wetlands on the lot, a creek running through it, and that creates limits for us.

@Tango Sometimes I miss Gideon's HNQs.

@Gallifreyan I don't think I ever had to deal with that.

8:13 PM
@Tango What do you think is missing (except users, of course)?

@Gallifreyan Not going to get into it. I'll just say it's something that had a direct effect on me.
@Gallifreyan It's just amusing to me that this particular "habit" is gone.

Q: Why did Doc appear near Marty's house on the time machine at the end of BTTF 1?

user2513149At the end of Back to the Future (part I) Doc appears on the time machine right near the Marty's house and tells Marty to go with him rescue his kids. They also took Jennifer with them. However when Doc uses sleep inducer on Jennifer in Back to the Future Part II Marty asks what they brought her ...

Q: A Fantasy-ish Book

Benjamin McAvoy-BickfordI am trying to identify the title and author of a fantasy-ish satire book. It was a YA book, I think published in the last 10 years. Plot: It is the main character's senior year of high school, and then some sort of supernatural thing begins, and deer begin freaking out and wreck the main chara...

@Gallifreyan: @Slytherincess or MajorStackings might remember it.

Ah, I probably wasn't here back then.

@Tango I remember, with fondness :)

8:20 PM
@Slytherincess It seems to no longer work here.

@Gallifreyan Aha, don't think I'm not watching all easy google questions, I just hit 55 on one. I'm doing good this month and quarter

8:42 PM
Someone else could write a bot.

Probs

bot for what?

@Edlothiad You're doing good this year as well ;)

Q: Identify a book about an exploratory mission + alien pet + topaz maybe?

MattI remember reading a young-adult sci-fi novel many years ago (early 90's), but I don't remember much about it, even though I read it at least twice. I recall it being an important transitional book for me, and I think that's why I read it more than once. It was the first time I was intrigued by s...

@Gallifreyan Lol, 6 ish months with about 800 rep, then went ham

8:44 PM
@Babelfish Broken still :(

@Riker HNQ I think

@Babelfish WHAT ARE YOU
@Gallifreyan It was fixed for me before

@doppelgreener - Sure.

Looks like the API thingy will need to recuperate this night.

@Edlothiad One with good ethernet.

8:47 PM
@Adamant Mine has good ethernet, and it has 1GB download speed
but 1TB?! That's like a movie in less than 5 milliseconds

Speed test from my phone over wifi right now.

@Adamant Ah Megabits, not Gigabits!

@Adamant *jealous*

@Edlothiad Oh, perhaps I was tired. Sorry.
I did say gigabits.
Actually, we can request 10 gbps internet if we need it. But definitely not 1 terabit per second.
I suppose I multiplied everything by 1000. ;) But it's still not bad.

@Adamant Hmm, I think we go to the same uni, but I won't inquire further

8:54 PM
@Edlothiad Not terribly likely. You are at UTC+1, correct?

Yes, if you're not then we're not
but mine has similar internet speeds and options.

@Edlothiad Missouri

Ah, well we're a ways apart haha!
So I found out theres an Arrow, Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl supercrossover, but I'm not interested in the last 2, what do?

@Edlothiad Whatever you want?

But a certain character has returned and I'm very confuzzled

8:57 PM
I think you can get away with watching just the one....
But it will feel disjointed.

Just don't watch the Arrowverse - problems solved.

ffs, I've watched some of SG but it really upset me
@Gallifreyan I enjoy The Flash and Arrow

@Edlothiad You didn't like Supergirl much?
I enjoyed it.
