@barbarabeeton Imho the sentence in the amsthm documentation that "If any theorem elements are numbered by section, and (in a book) the first such element in a chapter comes before the first section, numbering will continue from the previous chapter." is no longer true.
Could someone with a current texlive test this here tex.stackexchange.com/a/398274/2388? I don't know if the missing activation of the map file is a texlive bug that I should report.
@BAYMAX ShareLaTeX does not have the updated versions of the packages, they update their system only periodically. Add \listfiles at the beginning of your code to see in the log which version you're using both on ShareLaTeX and on Texmaker.
@UlrikeFischer -- thanks. i'll check that, and fix the documentation as necessary. although, admittedly, i'm surprised. i wasn't aware that there had been any changes that would affect this. it may be that a change has been made in book.cls, but if the problem still occurs with amsbook, the warning can't be removed completely.
@barbarabeeton @UlrikeFischer that would I guess be a change to latex's \stepcounter which (since 2015) resets all lower counters recursively not just the immediately declared resets
