Could somebody take a look at this fontspec/l3/MikTeX bug?
1
Q: Tex document not building in new computer (fontspec)

jpgrassiI have a resume written in Tex that was working just fine. I had to change my HD drive due to a problem. I installed Miktex 2.9 and TexMaker again and configured the packages to download and install on the fly. I'm using Windows 7 x64 When I build the file now, I'm getting several errors, but th...

("C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\tex\latex\fontspec\fontspec.cfg")))
! Undefined control sequence.
<recently read> \str_case:nnn

l.4 \setmainfont{Arial}
Is this one of the recent bugs? The OP installed MikTeX on a new hard drive, so I guess it should be reasonably current? I know zilch about MikTeX, though.

@cfr -- if i'm not mistaken (which is very possible, since i don't use miktex, i only lurk on the tex-live list), miktex doesn't freeze updates when the tex live freeze takes place, so it could update some files that won't be in synch until the tex live release. just a wild guess. and since that user had to do a total re-install, he certainly doesn't have the same versions he did before,

05:53
@cfr We 'zapped' all of the \str_case:nnn use ages ago: this looks like picking up some old version of fontsepc

2 hours later…
07:51
@cfr The OP didn't say which source he used, if he used a DVD or protext or the basic installer it can contain outdated stuff.
08:02
@ChristianHupfer Have you been referring to something?

From my new Ubuntu office machine; installed TL 2016 pretest, usual procedure working! :-D
12:13
@egreg Ubuntu?!?! Oh no!!!!!
12:50
@PauloCereda he calls it ubuntu but he means Windows 10 and its linux subsystem.
13:08
@egreg Good
@Johannes_B No, no. I just pretended my name would be Johannes_B and posted a comment out of context ;-)
13:33
@PauloCereda You'll teach me how to install a dually bootable system
14:25
@DavidCarlisle ooh :)
@egreg Sure. :)
14:45
is dual boot really worth it these days when computers are fast and virtual box is easy?
@jonalv Depends on your requirements
yea I guess but when does the virtual machine not cut it?
/me thinks it is a pain to do the actual reboot... it takes like forever... :)
oh, no "/me" here :(
@jonalv Gaming is the usual
@JosephWright Is there any deep reason for not providing global assignments to coffins?
9
Q: Globally assigning a coffin

Sean AllredThere is no macro \vcoffin_gset:Nnw. How can I achieve that result? MWE \documentclass{article} \usepackage{expl3}\ExplSyntaxOn \usepackage{mwe} \newcommand\typesetit {\coffin_typeset:Nnnnn\l_tmpa_coffin{l}{T}{0pt}{0pt}} \newenvironment{test} {\vcoffin_set:Nnw\l_tmpa_coffin{4in}}{\vcoffin_set_...

Yea I have the Windows machine at home for gaming but if I ever would do any LaTeX stuff at home I would do it from a virtual machine I think... But I guess if one normally uses linux then one want that to boot first...
14:54
@egreg Primarily 'it would be a lot of work' (I'd have to generalise all of the internals and pass around setters), btu also there's the question of what coffins are for, and at least at the moment we've not wanted global ones
@egreg Probably one for LaTeX-L so the obvious people can comment
@DavidCarlisle @barbarabeeton @JosephWright @egreg Markus made me aware that also the standard classes are affected by the redefinition of \@ifstar by amsgen if you are not really careful regarding spurious spaces:
\documentclass{book}%

\usepackage{amsgen}

\makeatletter
\renewcommand{\section}{%
\@startsection{section}%
{1} %spurious spaces
{0mm}%
{2ex plus 1ex minus 1ex}%
{0.5ex plus 0.5ex minus 0.5ex}%
{\Large\bfseries}
}
\makeatother

\begin{document}

\tableofcontents

\section*{Starheading}

\section{Normal heading}
\end{document}
@UlrikeFischer Doesn't surprise me: this is definitely one for the '2e team' (I've no view at all on such long-standing design ideas in 2e in terms of changing or commenting on it other than as guiding a new format)
@UlrikeFischer Problem here is of course in part that the AMS bundle is really part of core LaTeX (hence required) but this was not addressed 20+ years ago
@JosephWright: can I create a funny tag? :)
@PauloCereda
@percusse NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
15:01
because that's how I roll :)
@percusse hi sir! Long time no see!
@PauloCereda 'ellow
@JosephWright or rather the current situation accurately reflects the discussions at that time (@UlrikeFischer) ....
@JosephWright @egreg I'll post something to LaTeX-L tonight along with my use-case :)
I'll also post my work-around as an answer later tonight. It's not great, but... I guess it works. I end up with a few more poles than I'd like.
15:22
@SeanAllred ooh pole dancing!
<3
@PauloCereda Yes.
@SeanAllred YES! <3

:D :D :D
15:24
@SeanAllred :D
@JosephWright biblatex team needs to practice mwe creation a bit more, I think:-) tex.stackexchange.com/questions/303858/…
15:39
@SeanAllred OK
@DavidCarlisle :-)
16:03
@ChristianHupfer Now i know how you feel :-)
16:17
@Johannes_B Really? Not even me knows how I feel :D
Blaue Schuhe sind wärmer als grüne.

18:23
@DavidCarlisle PLK is obviously working hard on biblatex: I've been asked to provide some 'serious' TeX code (plus fix the backend issues)
The most clicked ad.
19:18
Anyone know much about Git? In particular, how do I 'tell' it about changes made to a file in two branches where there's also a rename
20:01
@JosephWright No idea. :(
@PauloCereda Neither do I, so for the mo I'm putting up with the name staying the same until everything is done

Q: sharelatex problem

KVRI am trying to use the ICIS2016 template posted by Ryan Schuetzler on Github here: https://github.com/rschuetzler/latex-icis-template It is complaining about font Georgia not being installed. I emailed ShareLatex and they said to post a question here Can anyone help? Thanks

Have you seen this question? Is that a good style of ShareLaTeX?
20:20
ooh there's a squirrel in the chatroom!
Lots of new people in here, yay!
Welcome to the world of tomorrow the chatroom!
@JosephWright :) We should throw a party!
@PauloCereda Shouldn't you do some thesis or something like that? ;-)
@ChristianHupfer oh no, I've been spotted! :)
@PauloCereda: You sir, are a procrastinating duck
20:28
So, what brings everyone here?
@JosephWright It has to be our amazing ads. :)
@JosephWright I am mainly here for the interviews ... ;-) (@PauloCereda: Whickers Island ;-))
I clicked on the ad about writing in lower case...
@NatalieHogg Ah, @barbarabeeton, makes sense :-)
@Kurt go to office 6 on the second floor.
20:29
but really I am just putting off working on my dissertation :P
@NatalieHogg Ah, sounds familiar
@NatalieHogg -- you're not the only one here doing that.
@NatalieHogg Welcome to the chatroom, Natalie!
@NatalieHogg This is @PauloCereda 's bad influence, apparently ;-)
@ChristianHupfer oy
20:31
@PauloCereda thank you :)
@PauloCereda <3
@ChristianHupfer <3
@NatalieHogg -- @PauloCereda is the other procrastinator. on friday he will go into his ordeal, where it will be determined whether he is worthy to continue. we, of course, know that he is, but his adviser and the inquisition have to decide that for themselves.
@barbarabeeton I see, well good luck @PauloCereda!
@barbarabeeton The Brazilian Inquisition?
20:34
@barbarabeeton @NatalieHogg Thank you! :)
@egreg Not the one happening in Brasília. :)
@barbarabeeton: If the advisor misbehaves I will broadcast in behalf of the wood party Paulo Party @PauloCereda ;-)
@PauloCereda The São Paulo branch uses cruel methods such as prolonged tickling.
@ChristianHupfer -- kind of too bad we can't be there to wave banners and shout slogans of encouragement. but we can think positive thoughts.
Have a good night all
@egreg Yes, quite! :) As counterattack, I prepared some slides with Comic Sans. :)
20:37
@barbarabeeton: The force is with him, I feel it ;-)
@ChristianHupfer Good night, Christian! :)
@barbarabeeton oooooh <3
@ChristianHupfer -- nighty night. (still an hour and a half until dinnertime here.)
@NatalieHogg: ^^ this is the best group of people ever! <3
@barbarabeeton Well, it's not really late here, but I've to get up really early tomorrow!
@barbarabeeton I am sure even @David would approve: one of my slides has the emacs logo in it. :)
20:39
@PauloCereda -- hmmm. i've been using emacs for nigh onto 40 years and didn't realize that it even had an official logo.
@PauloCereda I think you're right! I was a little intimidated by TeX.SX at first, but everyone is really nice :)
@barbarabeeton ooh
@NatalieHogg you are more than welcome to join the fun. :)
@NatalieHogg We aim to be friendly
@PauloCereda I would send you on a desert island after seeing that! And I'm not joking! ;-)
@egreg LOL
!!/help
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: Good afternoon! I'm Psmith, the friendly TeX bot - the p in my name is silent, as in pshrimp. I'm here as a companion to our fellow users in the typographic land. As you probably noticed, I always reply under Paulo's account, but do not despair, I say, my replies are always preceded by my own name. Enjoy your stay at TeX.sx! If you need any help, just ask our chat residents. Cheerio!
Psmith is back!
20:44
!!/battle
@egreg Psmith, the TeX bot: The current score is egreg 245 vs. 70 David. So far, egreg is winning.
@egreg: good times! :D
!!/choose procrastinate, write thesis
@PauloCereda Psmith, the TeX bot: The great oracle says: write thesis
Bah.
i've just delivered to chuck bigelow the (i hope) final version of an article for visible language, a special 50th anniversary issue on typography. the title is "communication of mathematics with tex", and dick palais is my co-author. do watch for it. i think it will be the september issue.

@barbarabeeton Congrats, Barbara!
Is the 'device-independent' name on dvipsnames anyhow related to the fact that greenis lighter than Green, but cyan, magenta, and yellow are darker than the dvipsnames variants?
@Kurzd I think it just refers to the program dvips
21:02
Are those colors supposed to be different? blue is the same as Blue, red looks the same as Red and so on
21:13
Very nice!
21:46
well, good night all :)
yo'
yo'
22:01
Damn, I managed to drain my car battery :-(
22:44
@yo' Did you leave the lights on for hours?
yo'
yo'
23:03
@Kurzd yep, while working on the car in the garage, stupid me...
@yo' I can imagine a few worse situations to empty your car's battery. Imagine being a Wolfsburg fan that had a power outage, and dried his battery listening to the game.

After reading that, I'm not sure if that makes you feel any better.
yo'
yo'
@Kurzd Well, I'm fine, it's just that I ...
... spent quite some time with it. I went home fetch the tools to remove the battery and it's charging just now on my balcony.
@Kurzd The Wolfsburg fan would have thanked the drained battery, after seeing the score. ;-)
yo'
yo'
Now I gotta go, bye!
@yo' Good night!
23:22
@yo' Nighty
@egreg Not sure if I'm allowed to make such a silly question, but how does a drained battery help a sad VfL fan?
@Kurzd He wouldn't see the match. ;-)
@egreg In my setting, he drained his battery listening to the match because a power outage left him with his car's radio as his single option to know what was going on.
@DavidCarlisle About the character creation question I had like 10 days ago, are mkern better than hspace and vspace when making custom characters?
@Kurzd Well, my impression is that ignorance of the final score would have helped.
@Kurzd \mkern is only horizontal
23:38
Is there any reason to use \mkernover \hspace here?
