@CarLaTeX rough sea, but we kept moving and we were far enough away from the storm

1:13 AM
@StefanKottwitz I'm happy to know you're well, I watched terrifying images on TV :'(

1:43 AM
@StefanKottwitz -- glad to hear you weathered the storm okay. many on land not so fortunate. (and much land still covered with water.)

If I'm already using hyperref, and I have only simple references like "Section ...", "Table ...", etc. there is no need to use cleveref, isn't it?

@CarLaTeX I don't think so. But not a cleveref user, so I am biased.

@HaraldHanche-Olsen Till now it works without problems... I think cleveref is needed only if you aren't using hyperref or if you want to build sophisticated references...
@HaraldHanche-Olsen Thank you!

Q: Why is reinsertion in multicol different than usual?

A Gold ManI've recently been having an issue with multicol and dblfnote. The solution to the issue was to change the definition in multicol of \reinsert@footnote from \ifvoid\footins\else\insert\footins{}\fi to \ifvoid\footins\else\insert\footins{\unvbox\footins}\fi Which matches the usual \@reinsert...

@CarLaTeX it is not an "either-or" question. hyperref is mostly for links, cleveref for the print out - e.g. it adds fix works like "Figure" to the links.

@UlrikeFischer I forgot to say \autoref from hyperref...
@UlrikeFischer Since I like the names with always the first letter capital, \autoref does more or less the same job of \Cref, I think...

7:20 AM
@CarLaTeX Ah yes, then they are really alternatives. If the result is okay, I don't see any reason to use the more powerful but also more complicated cleveref.

@UlrikeFischer Thank you!

@DavidCarlisle oi you are mean

Jun 29 at 16:15, by Paulo Cereda
@DavidCarlisle you are not mean :)

@DavidCarlisle <3

@PauloCereda what about the people who starred it?

@DavidCarlisle oopsie I starred that too. :)

@PauloCereda I suspected as much

9:21 AM
@DavidCarlisle we ducks are very naïve

@PauloCereda but can type words with fancy accents

@DavidCarlisle I blame my language that has those funny accent thingies. :) On a very sad note, the lastest ortographic reform dropped the umlaut... :(

@PauloCereda The idea of having rules that can be reformed sends @JosephWright and me into some kind of bewildered state wondering how officials can try to dictate any rules about something as anarchic as spelling:-)

@DavidCarlisle Yup

@DavidCarlisle I can relate. :) Funny thing is, I believe I still can escape this reform, since the government forced the usage from 2018 on. :)

9:26 AM
@JosephWright it might be better if governments worried about spelling than about messing up international relations and the economy.

@DavidCarlisle Indeed

Funny headline of the day:
> Why Bats Crash Into Windows
I thought it was computer-related! :D
@DavidCarlisle Did you hear that a former minister was found with 51 millions (live cash!) inside his flat?

@PauloCereda no, but I'm sure he was saving it up to do good works amongst the poor.

Mac people:
> Apple Is Releasing macOS High Sierra On September 25
@DavidCarlisle I think we and the Italians are doomed with their governments. :)

@PauloCereda at least you write that in the future tense so you still have hope. We and the americans though ....

9:33 AM
@DavidCarlisle Ouch.

10:13 AM
Anyone on Mac who can help this person: tex.stackexchange.com/q/391144/3929, without physical access I cannot.

@daleif The obvious problem is the dual installation (with probably some PATH related issues). I removed any trace of MacPorts long ago.

10:37 AM
@egreg Yes, alos my though, and I saw elsewhere that TL from macports is NOT recommended. Issue is then how to remove the mac ports stuff

@egreg: High Sierra soon, get ready!

Well…
@PauloCereda I think I'll wait at least a couple of months.

@egreg :)

10:53 AM
@egreg I suppose you need that time to play with the iphone X you have on order
2

@DavidCarlisle I ordered five of them, of course, they need some support.

@DavidCarlisle I have a colleague who probably will do exactly that

@JosephWright oh my

@JosephWright they obviously pay you too much:-)

@DavidCarlisle He's on a higher grade than me ;)

11:05 AM
@JosephWright so you can order at least one. :)

@PauloCereda does facial recognition work for ducks?

@DavidCarlisle oh my, I have no idea!

Hey I feel just like @egreg; I stole a tick from @UlrikeFischer!
4

@Apple Hi! Out of curiosity, does Face ID work on ducks?
3
@DavidCarlisle ^^

@PauloCereda no one looking at your twitter icon will know you are a duck or understand the tweet

11:09 AM
@DavidCarlisle Good point! But my question is still relevant. :)

@DavidCarlisle Boo. Has removing the vbox side-effects on "real longtables"?

@PauloCereda you'll probably get an official reply from apple and a link to a peer reviewed paper on statistical analysis of bill shapes

@DavidCarlisle ooh

@UlrikeFischer it fixes two or three bugs in my longtable bug list, it only boxes the last page, which stops \marks working on that page and a few other things, I did it originally as after switching back to the standard output routine there is a chance that it decides to break the page differently or float a top float back in to the table or something, but there ought to be less aggressive ways of fixing that than boxing the final partial page before handing back.
@UlrikeFischer as we both said in separate comments using any kind of table to align fixed width parboxes seems somewhat pointless.

11:40 AM
@DavidCarlisle My icon features a very important character: mariowiki.com/Blargg
> Blarggs are large dinosaurs commonly found inhabiting pools of lava in underground caverns. Blarggs resemble lazy-eyed lava dinosaurs, but Yoshi's Story depicts them as blob-like beings with large mouths, small arms and beady eyes, while numerous other games involve an assortment of similarly blob-like derived species.

@DavidCarlisle So it improves longtable ;-). Then you can have my tick.

@DavidCarlisle does longtable have bugs?! /gasp

@PauloCereda did you listen to my talk at all ?

@DavidCarlisle I always listen to your talks. :)

@DavidCarlisle Well tabulars helps also with rule, and you can add headers, and the spaces between the boxes are handled, and the struts are added automatically. So they make life a bit easier. But they are not really needed.

11:47 AM
@DavidCarlisle: I wrote an article for ArsTeXnica (the Italian blokes) and you are mentioned throughout the text. This bit might interest you:

@PauloCereda it's quite nice really! (the pizza, not the quote)

@DavidCarlisle ooh :) ooh :(

@PauloCereda I think ham and pineapple gets listed amongst the most favourite toppings world wide (just not in a few backward countries that are too stuck in tradition to try new flavours)

@DavidCarlisle There's one flavour here that fancies chips. :)

@PauloCereda slapped wrist from the moderators:-)

@DavidCarlisle yep. :)

@JosephWright @egreg vvvvvvv
don't put spaces in filenames. — David Carlisle 24 secs ago

@DavidCarlisle Just because you're in charge of making them work!

@egreg I think the above should be an implementation sketch, amend input and includegraphics to detect spaces in their argument and make them stop and give the above error.

3:09 PM
@DavidCarlisle And if a non ASCII character is found, make the machine melt.

@egreg that's assumed behaviour.

@DavidCarlisle With no caveat in the manual, of course. OTOH, who's reading manuals?

@egreg if that were true, arara 4.0 was out for a long time. :)

@egreg I have the manual source in The 𝐿𝑎𝑇𝑒𝑋 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 .tex but I haven't been able to input it.

2 hours later…
5:08 PM
"Why do you live under my bed?" she whispered. "I'll tell you," whispered the monster, "if you explain why you keep sleeping on my roof."
:)
@barbarabeeton: I asked the British Library the following:
@britishlibrary: out of curiosity, what is your favourite oddly-shaped book design? #AskACurator
And their reply:
Lots! Particularly artists books. This is 'Binding Ties' by artist Angela Lorenz, currently being catalogued.… https://twitter.com/i/web/status/907986396291457024

5:41 PM
@PauloCereda Haha, you gotta love that one. Do you think \documentclass[tie-paper]{memoir} was used?

@mickep Quite possible. :) We should poke @daleif. :)

@PauloCereda Thesis defence ;)

@JosephWright Oh my!
@JosephWright Literally! :)

Hello @JosephWright and @PauloCereda I see that after so many years, you are still ducks, lol.

@Jasper Hello! No surprise, I am a duck!

6:07 PM
@PauloCereda call me when it is an ISO standard :-p

@daleif I could use img2iso. :)

@PauloCereda Well, that was at least a standard joke ;)

@mickep ooh indeed
Why did the ISO chicken cross the road? To get to the other standard. :)
/sad trombone

@PauloCereda So, did you answer the library to tell them about the upcoming duck-book? They will probably love it!

@mickep ooh good plan
I think we should prod @NicolaTalbot about publishing a duck-shaped book. :)

2 hours later…
7:53 PM
@PauloCereda did you also get a reply from apple re face recognition?

@DavidCarlisle no :(

@PauloCereda British library clearly better then.

@DavidCarlisle yes. :)

@egreg's favourite editor ^^^

@DavidCarlisle Definitely!

8:02 PM
@egreg vim hasn't got a "LaTeX" button in its default configuration.

@DavidCarlisle does emacs?

@PauloCereda what's a button?

@DavidCarlisle The Italian goalkeeper, I guess.
Oh wait, it's Buffon. Sorry.
It's the English F-1 driver then.

but inserting math zones is all well and good, but clearly seems alien to @egreg and @CarLaTeX, but this should make them feel more at home, look what happens if you say insert Hawaiian pizza:

@DavidCarlisle Hawaiian what?

8:07 PM
@DavidCarlisle Tell me what you want do do -> Annoy the Italians /inserts Hawaiian pizza image

"Serious" question: if I clicked on the wrong link while I was closing a question as duplicate, there is some way to change it?

@CarLaTeX You can retract your vote by clicking on “close”

The question is already closed now: tex.stackexchange.com/questions/391115/…
@egreg I can't, it's already closed...

@CarLaTeX I see; maybe @JosephWright can fix it.

@DavidCarlisle See here: tex.stackexchange.com/q/391236/101651!!!

Congrats:-)
@egreg my way is simpler

10:03 PM
Nobody else for the party?

@egreg Thanks, also for the nice picture.

@HeikoOberdiek Nice to see you here: congratulations again! How's it going?

@DavidCarlisle Thanks.
@egreg Still, maintaining a low TeX profile. Hopefully, I can manage to change this a bit.
