8:59 AM
Good morning all, so far today I have failed to get my mobile internet working, and missed afly-by of a Boeing 787over the premises via the medium of rushing outside to see it as the window view was bad.
How you doin'?

hey @stuffe -- got a question for you.
@suffe liked your answer to another question but when I went to apply your approach to my machine I got confused. See:

http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/49863/how-do-i-know-which-keyboard-locale-file-im-using-for-my-keyboard-layout

@IanC FWIW, I use the U.S. locale, but edited Keyboard-en.plist and the trick works a treat.

@jaberg yea I guess I could just edit all 4.

Actually--not working on this machine (air) at the moment. Strange--let me check something else.
Interesting--according to Xcode I corrupted that plist on this machine...
Left out a </dict>
Fixed. My original statement stands @IanC — The en.plist file works for the US keyboard layouts.

2:21 PM
thanks @jaberg

Thank you--I never would have discovered the partial-double entry I made in the .plist yesterday. Can't believe I didn't test it on this machine—guess I got enamored with my TextExpander snippets and neglected to double check.

I just love, love, love this question and all the awesome answers.

Q: How can I expand the number of special characters I can type using my keyboard?

Daniel LawsonI am aware that when I press ⌥ or ⇧⌥ on my Mac, I can type a variety of special characters. I also know that I can insert special characters using the character palette. Is there a way to expand the number of special characters I can type while using the keyboard?

4:24 PM
@bmike Me too!! I have my "q" key mapped to show all the ⌃⌥⇧⌘⎋⏏ symbols
@bmike How?

@daviesgeek The q key is the best place for those symbolls
@daviesgeek How now brown cow?

@bmike Yup. That or I just though of "g", "h", or "j"

I used "k" for "keys"

@jaberg Good one.

Damn, what's the point of a kbd snippet if I can't use it. ;)

4:28 PM
I'm considering opening a question on meta to ask for better markdown support in chat and <kbd></kbd> as well as....there was something else, but it just skipped my mind.....

@daviesgeek search for the question on meta - it may have been asked already.

Of course.
Hmm...there's not a specific request, but it seems kinda like it was intentional...maybe

It falls below my personal threshold of annoyance. It's a chatroom—I'd emphasize simplicity and robustness over features.

Is Markdown supposed to work *in*side a word?

No

4:35 PM
I know it doesn't work here, but what about the full fledged version?

no

Interesting...

I stand corrected—Byword does render *in*side with "in" italicized

@jaberg Byword?

Byword is my prose editor of choice. It has tight markdown integration

4:37 PM
I see.
I don't think I'm gonna post a question...

Marked also renders the *in*word italics.

@bmike Ha! I've passed you up in voting!!!!

3 hours later…
7:32 PM
@lri - Any ideas how to solve this generally?

Q: Can Finder and the "open" command treat files with .sh or other typical extensions just like .command files?

bmikeI am looking for a way to inject some more extensions into the OS X launch services database systematically so that when clicked, they execute in the terminal app just like .command files do by default. Things like .ksh, .sh, and .csh would be nice to start, but I assume once I figure out how to...

8:07 PM
Considering open sourcing Nippon, since I'm too busy to maintain it.

Wow, good answers and comments all around.

Q: Does the MacBook Air have no RAM because it uses flash?

TheLearnerSilly question, but does the MacBook Air not actually have RAM because it uses Flash or what? Does it make application loading faster than the MacBook Pro?

jrg
9:25 PM
@JasonSalaz no more than 4GB of ram for a MBA?
hm, i wonder what VMs would be like on that.

small ones would be just fine :P
Interesting. Mac-to-Mac VNC on the local LAN is being obnoxious, stalling, etc. But if you tunnel it through SSH it works just fine.
weird.

jrg
Heh, I love SSH for that reason.

10:24 PM
Hello

@ruddfawcett Hey

@daviesgeek Hey

I saw your edits and they have been approved

Thanks :)
@daviesgeek You can approve edits?

Good edits, BTW. Helps a lot in reading it.
@ruddfawcett Yup. I am a 5K+ user, so I can see and approve all suggested edits.

10:29 PM
@daviesgeek Thanks.

When you get to 2K, you can edit and approve edits, but you don't see the queue. When you hit 5K, you get the queue.

@daviesgeek That's cool... A few more days 'til I get there :)

@ruddfawcett You only need 434 more answer upvotes 'til you get there
Or 868 question upvotes.

Wow! I'm totally going to get those in the next few days!
(sarcasm)
How many edits is that?

jrg
That's like, more edits than @daviesgeek and I have combined. Which is... a very large number.

10:32 PM
@jrg Hehe

@ruddfawcett 2170

Wow.
Never mind then.

Yup. Jrg + daviesgeek edits = 2,092

Take this answer for instance:

A: Switch internal monitor off by software (script/terminal/shortcut/…)

ruddfawcettTo disable the internal screen for OS X Lion based laptops, launch the Terminal and enter the following command: sudo nvram boot-args="iog=0x0" You’ll need to reboot for changes to take effect, and the internal display will then be completely disabled regardless of whether the Mac is open or c...

So, not even enough.

10:34 PM
When I look at my profile, I don't see that the asker accepted my answer why?

I dunno, but you got a bounty from it
I wish you could have 4 upvotes, but I've met my daily vote quota
I've put your answer in my "to vote on later" queue

@jrg They generally scream. I'm floored by how much faster my 11 Air is than my 2009 MBP - for everything.

@bmike What's the CPU on the 2009 MBP?
So, when is that okay?

@daviesgeek I want to say 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo or maybe 2.53
@daviesgeek When is what OK?

I see. I kinda guessed it was a C2D.
@bmike Look at the link

10:40 PM
I know what I did - i want to know what you mean by that
I commented
I edited

@bmike No. Look at the edit you made
I'm asking: "When is is okay to make one word edits?" (not trying to be rude, I'm asking to see when that's okay)

They cover that in the moderator training ;-)

Ok...so if I make that kind of edit, would you be okay with it?

Until you've gone through moderator training, I'd avoid doing that.

I see.
Okay.
Just wonderin'
Hey @bmike could you add a tag synonym please?

10:45 PM
It's not an ideal question - so I wanted to comment and the edit enhanced the comment - hope to steer it to being more likely to getting a edit by the OP

@bmike OK.

@daviesgeek Could you post the counts on the two tags in the tag room?

Understood
@bmike ?? Like how many questions for each?

@daviesgeek Read the history from today in the tag room

@bmike I saw

10:46 PM
It covers network - networking synonym being proposed.
We can add this request to the others to see whether it's needed yet.

Done. (as you can already see)

jrg
@bmike Really? I'm a little skeptical. (although, granted, I have never used a SSD before, they are just toooooo pricey)

@jrg Really? Skeptical of the benefits/speed of an SSD?

(echoes Jason's comment)

90% of the applications I've installed on this laptop have copied in less than a second. Only the largest things that ship a whole framework (Java, Qt, etc.) take at least a handful of seconds.

jrg
10:50 PM
@JasonSalaz I'm skeptical that a machine with 4GB of ram can run a VM with decent speed.

oh, we're talking VMs specifically.

I was too.

Sorry, didn't read all the scrollback.
<-- 512GB SSD + 8GB RAM in a Macbook Pro, so I can't comment on the air :).

Oh. I forgot about that too. (talking about VMs) :-)

I haven't been able to separate my memory gains on the Air from a new install and/or my old mac was crafted up yet.

jrg
10:51 PM
It's ok Jason. :) bmike, interesting. I'll have to get a SSD and see what it does to this old ThinkPad.

I hope to blow the MBP away and do a clean install next week. Then I'll have more data on whether Lion runs thinner on this air and leaves more RAM for VM or it's just a "new mac" snappyness

jrg
Heh. I'll look forward to seeing that, could be a interesting blog post. :)

@JasonSalaz I couldn't run Aperture on my MBP with 4 G ram, but it flies on the Air.

@jrg Yah. @bmike You should do one.

@jrg Yes - I have a couple of articles I might drop on the blog in the next few weeks.

10:53 PM
I have troubles with iPhoto, but that doesn't narrow it down :).

jrg
@bmike Sweet. I look forward to them. :)
