I did hesitate before adding the tag — concerned about proliferation of tags for non-Apple products — but found a few other adobe-… tags, and maybe a dozen questions to which the new tag applied, so I gave it a go.
Related suggestions, either:
a) as a synonym for ; or
… if Ask Different moderators don't like either of the tags in (a) …
b) a new tag with a synonym AND THEN make dead project a synonym for OSXFUSE.

@GrahamPerrin I only renamed to be so I'm not sure whether the others were cleaned up by a script or by someone taking action.
In general - I like to see tags that are broad rather than narrow. Spending time planning synonyms for tags that may get used 10 times in a year seems like premature.
It's a bit of a chicken and egg solution since people won't use a tag until it exists, but we usually want to wait and see which of the two is more popular - better for the site before going to the trouble to construct a synonym.
Keep in mind search works very well to find fuse items. Is there some body of work that explains what a "filesystem in userspace" is? I've never seen it mentioned before as a concept for discussion.

So - let's take things down to basics.

Q: How can I expand the number of special characters I can type using my keyboard?

Daniel LawsonI am aware that when I press ⌥ or ⇧⌥ on my Mac, I can type a variety of special characters. I also know that I can insert special characters using the character palette. Is there a way to expand the number of special characters I can type while using the keyboard?

That question was originally tagged instead of
Yes - you can still find the question searching on Mac - but do our tag summaries really make this clear? Many people run other OS on their Macs so tagging this mac isn't the "best" tag for them. However, anyone running OSX will be interested in this question and answer - regardless of the manufacturer of their hardware.
I think there's a lot of room to make the existing tags better. After that, if you want to help introduce a new tag - find at least 5 questions where the tag should live before going through the trouble to create the tag.
Posting all here and getting some consensus might be better than just adding a lot of tags that are not even used once on the site.
You also want to be mindful, that bulk editing is a bit abusive of the home page placement. If you decided to tag 10 questions with FUSE - you are bumping everything off the active page - so it's much better to add one tag organically when you have a question that demands that tag. Then curate things - edit one or two things a day
and then see where the tag sits. We are past the point where a couple of people can front load the tag system with new tags and should be growing things organically - not adding 10 new tags at a time and forcing 50 to 100 questions to adopt these new tags all at once.

Here's an example of something we might wish to synonimize:
has 265 questions and has 92 questions. My initial thoughts are to merge the larger onto the smaller and leave a synonym, but I'll want to check with the other mods and think about this for a day or two before taking any action.
@KyleCronin I'm wondering what you might think of the above proposal (network and networking)

Can we add a synonym for (1 question) to be remapped to (83 questions)?
It follows with the system of remapping to to etc...

@daviesgeek Hmm - looking now.

@bmike Ok.

@daviesgeek Tag Synonym 10.5 -> leopard was approved!

Awesome!
Do people have to vote on it?

(that would be a no - it's live)
Generally - I'd wait longer and just merge things down - let the tag disappear overnight, but in this case, there's a nice pattern so doing the work made sense.

@bmike Ok. Is that a mod thing? (being able to make tag synonyms w/o voting)
