Can someone please take a look at the suggested tag synonyms?

Why is it so urgent?

Hi

@daviesgeek I didn't see anything pending.

@jtbandes People have forgotten about it :-)

@daviesgeek I had no idea that screen existed.

@DanielLawson :-) thanks for voting on it though...

@jtbandes I wish I could upvote your nice edit.
That formatting problem was bugging me, but I didn't know you could escape a back tic.

Hehe, yep.
It's quite annoying to get ` though.
i.e. a backtick inside a code fragment.
`\\``
...and chat doesn't have sufficient capabilities...

right
well, I found some other posts of yours to upvote instead.

Hahah. thanks.
I appreciated your comment on my answer to that same question

It's a beautiful answer. I'll shift my accept to it as soon as I can award a bounty to stuffe's answer. I really asked the question just to be able to reward him for coming up with that technique; I'm using it a lot now. But your answer is a model of comprehensiveness.

blush
Wait, there's an emoji for that!
Well, that's disappointing :/

1:49 PM
Emoji aren't all they're cracked up to be.

That's something I don't get... most of Apple's emoji are in some "private use" range of unicode... but a few of them (☺, ☁, ✈) are in the lower ranges of pictograms that actually exist in other fonts.

exactly. Some are part of the unicode standard; most aren't.

I suppose it improves degradation for devices that don't support them, but it's just ugly if everything else looks fine but these are boring unicode characters.

@daviesgeek Antsy?

@bmike :-)
@jtbandes Ooh, I can see those!!!

There is nothing that was posted that was emoji.
and yes, I did open Safari to make sure.

WOW!! Talk about not checking suggested edits!! I just went to edit the motion tag on AVP and I found my edit from months ago!!!!

5:47 PM
@daviesgeek :(

@jrg Yah. And I'm wondering how long it will sit there...

jrg
Watch. Next year, you'll get elected moderator, and then you'll approve your edit. ;)

@jrg Not on AVP.

@daviesgeek Tag edits are not exactly made obvious, unlike wiki edits and q/a edits.

I don't want to be mod on AVP, I wanna be mod here

5:50 PM
Oh, AVP. Sorry. LINGO! I NO UNDERSTAND!

@JasonSalaz I meant tag wiki edit.

AVP isn't exactly the most happening place, either.

No, unfortunately....I wish it had a bigger community
@JasonSalaz It has a lot of potential

Everything does.
Except a slug.

I think the Apple discussion community is too big
@JasonSalaz Or a really old Windows machine :-)

5:58 PM
classic Windows still has application
classic DOS games. Though I guess DOSBox does help a lot with that.

@JasonSalaz Ok. True...
However, they really can't connect to the Internet

Windows 95 can if you replace it's TCP stack with WinSock2.
Windows 3.1 is internet incompatible.

Do the old machines have Ethernet?

I have no idea when ethernet started commonly replacing BNC

@JasonSalaz goes to Google "BNC"

6:05 PM
The BNC connector (Bayonet Neill–Concelman or British Naval Connector) is a miniature quick connect/disconnect RF connector used for coaxial cable. It features two bayonet lugs on the female connector; mating is achieved with only a quarter turn of the coupling nut. BNCs are ideally suited for cable termination for miniature-to-subminiature coaxial cable (e.g., RG-58, 59, to RG-179, RG-316). It is used with radio, television, and other radio-frequency electronic equipment, test instruments, video signals, and was once a popular computer network connector. BNC connectors are made to match...

I know. I just read that.

it's a relative of coax.

I can't remember that far back :-)

Is it possible to reindex the iTunes folder?

Q: How can I remove a PDF in iTunes?

gentmattThere are several PDF files which I imported into iTunes to read using iBooks. However, I cannot manage to remove them. By default, iTunes handles the its media library automatically. The PDFs and iBooks are stored in: ~/Music/iTunes/iTunes\ Media/Books/ When I remove the PDF files here, they...

Oh, right, forgot to post that :-)
You can read the full transcript in:
@gentmatt Wanna star my comment again?

6:10 PM
I don't mind :)

Lemme change that. Unstar it and I'll post it again

That statement deserves attention.

We need to band together a whole bunch of people to pressure Apple into fixing iTunes
4
@gentmatt Absolutely!

I didn't know that you could *un*star a post. I thought that those were locked.

@gentmatt :-)
@JasonSalaz Got a solution?

6:13 PM
?
for?

@JasonSalaz ^ the question up there ^

Have I answered it?

@JasonSalaz No.

There's your answer.

Haha! :-)
Looks like that is equivalent to rebuilding/reindexing your iTunes library. Do a backup first though just to make sure :-)

6:18 PM
I'm testing this right now, but I've removed a different file: iTunes Library.itl

@gentmatt Hmmm....never heard of it. goes to look

yeah, it moved to itl at some point. The xml file is a bit of a relic.

Ah. I see it.

Guess what itl is short for?

iTunes Library

6:19 PM
we have a winner

Did not help.

I have two: iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml

The PDFs are not added to the Library automatically.

Darn.

Of course I'll add them manually now.

6:20 PM
I'm just gonna repeat what you said:

However, it's kind of ridiculous to reindex the whole library every time I want to remove a pdf...

Agreed!!!!

I also have to setup all my selective syncs again. THAT SUCKS
reimports the old .itl file
Because of the limited space on the iPad i had to selectively sync music, podcasts, photos... It took quite a while to set this up.

I hate that too. Every other time, iTunes loses the settings for my iPod and I have to go and manually select which playlists I want and it's a big hassle. </rant>

Hahaha! I figured it out.
Oh man... Shame on myself.

6:24 PM
@gentmatt BTW, I will upvote your question in 7 hours, once I've got votes back.

This is what I tried first:
But I have to go here:
...

You generally don't manage data directly on device.

I feel so dumb. :)

You manage data and sync the result.
That is
you don't manage data on device in iTunes.
you managed data on device, on device.

Yeah. I got it messed up.
That's probably because I'm doing several things at once here.

6:26 PM
@gentmatt Umm...yeah, that would be the place to go

Writing an Email, scanning a document for a friend, and chatting...
@JasonSalaz Can you remove my question?

I would leave it.

OPs can delete their own questions.

Mmmh. Ok, I don't mind.

It is helpful, and I will edit my answer to add that you need to go to the books section on the computer

6:28 PM
but this really is a legitimate question and a good answer.

One moment...

Ok.

if you made the mistake, other's will too. I'd keep it around.

Ditto

@daviesgeek Can you add to your answer, that you need to first go to the books tab?

6:29 PM
@gentmatt Already doing that. One step ahead of ya

Great!

Done

This looks good, except for that iTunes Windows screenshot! Lol.

Whoever upvoted my answer, can you upvote gentmatt's question too?
@gentmatt Yah. I may have to change that. I am not on a desktop that has an iOS device connected to it.
Can you upload one with English?
I would've used yours, but it was in German

I can make a screenshot in English, but i don't want to discriminate the Windows version of iTunes :)

6:38 PM
I want to.
I'll gladly get rid of the Windows screenshot

Got it

Next problem: How can I lower the resolution of a PDF document? (That PDF document is a series of scanned text documents.)

Goes to post a question before gentmatt can (kidding!!)

The PDF was originally scanned at a resolution of 600dpi. But the iPad is too slow at rendering the PDFs. Therefore I need to lower the resolution.
There has been posted a question like this. But i don't like both answers.

6:46 PM
Export>Reduce File Size in Preview

That's horrible!
The resolution is way too low, i cannot read text anymore.

@gentmatt Oh. I didn't actually follow through with it. :-)

Hello all

The other answer suggests using ImageMagick, but the installation requires homebrew.
@ruddfawcett Hello.

A: How can I change the resolution of a PDF

Martin FootYou can use ImageMagick's scale or resize operators. ImageMagick® is a software suite to create, edit, compose, or convert bitmap images. It can read and write images in a variety of formats (over 100) including DPX, EXR, GIF, JPEG, JPEG-2000, PDF, PhotoCD, PNG, Postscript, SVG, and TIF...

@ruddfawcett Hey!

6:52 PM
BTW: I meant MacPorts, not homebrew...

@gentmatt File > Save As… > Format: PDF > Quartz Filter: Reduce File Size
In preview

I'll show you an example where this filter fails big time!

@gentmatt Have you taken the shrink it tool for a ride lately?

That should lower the resolution

@gentmatt Yes - the keynote and quartz filters are a little too aggressive for my tastes in many cases.

6:55 PM
@bmike Wow, I've seen your rep and posts, but never in chat... This is pretty cool...

They're nice when you want a quick and dirty - strong reduction without messing with finding the medium, but for fine text it's a bad thing.
3
@ruddfawcett I come and go - big hi to you. I actually prefer chat to reading answers from a while back.

@bmike This is the first time I've heard of it. Thanks for the link! I've tried it, but nothing happens. The new PDF is exactly the same size.

@daviesgeek So what needs fixing? (loaded question)

...which is strange. Because both the highly compressed and uncompressed version of my PDF remain the same size when using this tool.

@gentmatt It doesn't change the images - just strips all sorts of crud / metadata
Sometimes a PDF comes through adobe products and it works wonders.

6:59 PM
:) Ok.

Do you have a doc you can share?
cl.ly or other upload service to let me poke at it a bit?

It's 69 MB. The other one is almost 200 MB.

@gentmatt not huge - but too big for email in many cases

Ok, I'll upload it to dropbox right now.
@bmike I'll post you the link in a direct message on twitter.

Anyone know about this?

A: What tiny thing in iOS 5 makes you smile, or has caught you off guard?

ruddfawcettFast International Keyboard Switching Now, if you have multiple international keyboards, you can hold the little globe, and convienientally switch between your keyboards! I'll put a screenshot up soon!

7:03 PM
@gentmatt perfect

@ruddfawcett That is not a new feature of iOS 5.

7:17 PM
catch you all in a bit later..

7:47 PM
*61MB, 189 MB

7:59 PM
@bmike @gentmatt Acrobat Pro will work I believe. I was trying to figure it out, but I had to go eat lunch.
@bmike I don't even know where to start with that...
Let's see. Overall management of files...
Something needs to be fixed with the syncing interface/backend...
Going back to file management...a way to easily fix broken songs (songs that have been moved)
I can't think of anything else off the top of my head...

8:47 PM
There's an easy way to fix broken songs.
The back end is amazingly well engineered - what might need chaanging?
