Hell, I can put 500 horses (and appropriate brakes!) in a Cooper for about the cost of insuring a 911 for the year. ;)

@gentmatt Amen to that. I'm thrilled to be back in a manual transmission, even if it only has 100HP.

@DanielL 100? What do you with the extra 23?

occasionally, accelerate. Or make it up a hill.
But I do love my Fiat.

3:20 PM
@jaberg 1 share and some 2 votes to go.

@DanielL Hey, I get up hills. My Series climbed to the top of Great Basin National Park so the ex and I could hike (another 2500 vertical feet) to see the little trees up there. ;)

@DanielL This reminds my of my host-sister in the US. To her, the Audi TT did not provide enough horsepower.
Seriously?! :)

3:36 PM
@gentmatt It's not bad, for a girls car. ;) (Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't kick it out of the garage.)

@jaberg 77hp? What do yo do with the extra 76.5?
@jaberg Just the design itself is awesome!
But yes, I'd also sell it and buy some apple hardware instead :)

@gentmatt Transport women, and their luggage, to places they wish to be. ;)
But I have one of those too.

@jaberg Now that's an awkward frame!
Ok, I get the point.

Yup.

That bike has got mechanical disk brakes. That's a no-go! It's dangerous.

3:42 PM
You can jump out of an airplane with it too, at least that's what Force Recon does with 'em
@gentmatt One disc, on caliper, but I'd trade it for two discs in a heartbeat.

@jaberg Now that's interesting. They need to fly to a hardly inaccessible area, and then they expect to get everywhere fast using MTBs?
Even with an MTB you need little trails to ride on. Especially uphill.

@gentmatt Bikes are often used by special ops teams for scouting missions. Relatively fast and they tend to blend in.

(Just do it on a camp painted folding model. ;) )

That's more like it :)

3:47 PM
@gentmatt Okay Mister I'm off to conquer the hills of my city. ;)

@jaberg Let's play a game... Who does this belong to?
That guy has actually managed to answer seven questions!

No clue. bmike?

Nope.

Someone "new"?
I like this one myself--wish I had that rig as a camper.

He has been here before. But was not active.

3:49 PM
Let's play a game of Global Thermonuclear War. AskDifferent Style.

@AndrewLarsson LOL

@jaberg I like that UFO in the background.

Okay, is it Andrew?

I wish it was me...

@gentmatt Oh no. Now that you saw it I have to…

3:50 PM
Nope.

@AndrewLarsson I was kidding. You don't seem the type. I think Matt is hedging towards the fact that having seven answered excepted is a little suspicious.

@AndrewLarsson What would that even look like? :)

@jaberg @gentmatt So you suspect that he's boosting?

@jaberg I'm not suspicious - rather amazed that somebody has managed to answer that many questions on one day.

@gentmatt Let me find a picture...

3:53 PM
Actually, I kind of like the Geländewagen in the background too.

@AndrewLarsson I don't. I bet he wants to catch up with all the others in the competition.

@gentmatt Okay. You don't have to be suspicious. I am. I'd have to see the quality of the answers before passing final verdict, but as I said before, I'm judgey.
I'm not going to go on the warpath or anything, but I do find that a little suspicious.

Ok, here's the 'solution'...

I answered a bunch of questions yesterday. As did @stuffe, as did you. We all got a reasonable number of acceptances. That would seem to be a statistical anomaly. Not beyond reason, but worthy of inspection.
Okay, he and I were on at least one answer together yesterday and I will concede, his answer wasn't bad or trivial. I want to be clear, I'm not making an accusation, I'm merely curious and, yes, suspicious.

nothing suspicious to see

3:58 PM
I just hope that there will be no more temporary suspensions.

Different askers.

Wow. Where did you come from!?!?
Stealthy ninja :)

I agree @balpha Once I took a look. And I have faith that you are watching over things.

@balpha How do the links get counted?

user image
2
@gentmatt what do you mean?

3:59 PM
I randomly surveyed a handful of the accepted questions and found them to be from different (and diverse) OPs.

I've experienced that everything I share via twitter get counted instantly (5 clicks).

@balpha I was also wondering about the links. I had one of my shares dissapear yesterday.

I could not believe it.

@gentmatt That's because of your rabid twitter following.
My G+ links take time to sink in. ;)

yeah, 100 followers, a couple of bots probably

4:01 PM
Thanks for saying something when you thought something looked suspicious.

5 clicks isn't hard
@AndrewLarsson Is it possible one of the questions you shared got closed?

Ok, well I'm still surprised.

No, it didn't get closed.
It's still open.

@DanielL Like I said, at first blush it looked a little questionable. Upon inspection, he's working it and providing solid answers to questions that aren't all softballs. Good on him!

@AndrewLarsson you mission counter has one share
so you say you had two?

4:02 PM
@balpha It's not a big deal, but it was sort of awkward when my share went from 1/1 to 0/1.

Speaking of ninjas.

Yes, I had two.

Okay, need to grab some socks and head out for lunch. I'll check in from the bar. Because I always do…

@balpha I had one, it dissapeared, so I went and got another one to replace it.

looking
ah, you shared a pretty controversial post

Q: Shouldn't Siri be able to run on the new iPad?

MosheSiri has been made to run on older iOS devices some time ago. It was reported by MacRumors that special hardware is what sets the iPhone 4S as the exclusive device for Siri. Enter the new iPad. The new iPad supports voice dictation, which, to me anyway, is a clear indicator of at least some of ...

that one is oscillating between 1 and 2
at 1 it doesn't count, at 2 it does
> The post you share [...] should have a score of 2+

4:08 PM
@gentmatt Here's the picture.
Paint. For the win.
@balpha Oh, I see.

@AndrewLarsson My eyes! My eyes hurt!

@gentmatt Yeah, I didn't try too hard on it to make it look good or funny.

Change of topic....
You can take part in the poll here: hints.macworld.com/…

@jaberg I was hitting repcap without getting any accepts, accepts have been touch these last few days with new users not really geting it.

I thought that most people here use Chrome....

4:16 PM
only the brave

As long as scrolling in Chrome is not as smooth as in Safari, I cannot use it. Also the HTML5 video player is not really my thing. But let's not argue about such things here :)

Chrome just doesn't seem as polished or featured as FireFox and Safari.

However, when using different computers, Chrome's synchronization is just awesome.
Chrome also syncs with my Nexus S with Chrome Beta.

I would kill to have Firefox on iOS.

@AndrewLarsson In Germany Firefox is the most famous browser.

4:25 PM
It looks like Germans are smart.

@gentmatt Tab syncing in Mountain Lion Safari should plase you then

4:41 PM
I'll dance with the browser that Apple brung me.
@stuffe I've been getting an accept or two a day.

@stuffe Let's hope that there'll also be an option to sync extensions at some point. Adblock is the first thing I install whenever I use a "new" browser.

5:09 PM
Curious, how long does it take for click throughs to be recognized?

@jmlumpkin I don't know for certain (because I don't know the time a fifth click is performed on any of my links) but I generally see results an hour or two after posting a link to G+.

5:28 PM
@jaberg hah, i would like to see ANY results coming from G+. I would love to share links, but having to do 10 seems like its really going to spam twitter/facebook

@DanielL Ah. I didn't know exactly what happend to create that, but I knew that any questions tagged with should be re-tagged.
@DanielL Yup. I know you've disagreed in the past. I was sorta serious when I said that. :-)

5:52 PM
@jaberg Yeah, that's fine!
@jmlumpkin ping (in regard to your RDP question)

What's this "ping" you speak of?

@jmlumpkin I've been doling them out one at a time.
@jmlumpkin I also warned my Circles about my intentions.

@jaberg Yeah, I warned some FB friends about the same thing. Id warn on G+ too, but that place is a wasteland, and doubt anyone is checking them there (because I know my friends on there don't check G+)
@Senseful what sup

Is this the Ping you seek? ;)

Q: Windows RDP client that allows key mapping and easy use of Function Keys

jmlumpkinI often use RDP clients (like Microsoft Remote Desktop or CoRD) to access my work machines to use Visual Studio at work. This actually works pretty well, except for when it comes to using the Function keys (especially F10 and F11 for debugging). As you can see, the problem is that the Mac OS no...

6:06 PM
@jmlumpkin I have a pretty tight local group on G+, which is why I chose it over Twitter for most of my shares. F2F friends tend to me forgiving, half my Twitter group would unfollow at the first hint of a contest link.

@jmlumpkin if you disable the function key (i.e. make it so when you press the mute button it actually sends F10), does it work?

@Senseful Thanks for the affirmation.

@jaberg exactly. The people I friend on G+ are the same way, BUT, I don't think any of them check it anymore to know to click.

Well I broke 4K over lunch. (A personal milestone.)

@Senseful I will have to double check, but how do you mean disabling it? If I hit the Fn+F10 (and I think command), it does work.

6:08 PM
@jmlumpkin I'm lucky, it's become one of the primary comms channels for my Maker space. :)

@jaberg I don't really use it much either, so im supprised that others dont. Im going to continue to share there (its more than nothing), but I think some people on FB may be ok with it, in such a way that they will learn something.

@jmlumpkin what about a solution on the PC side? would that work in your case?

@Senseful how so? current solution now is is to just use the toolbar.

@jaberg No, but it's probably close.

@jmlumpkin If I was still on Facebook, I'd use that channel without hesitation. I removed myself for personal reasons.
@AndrewLarsson I love that duck, and that review!

6:26 PM
Just checking the questions in most recent order.
Interesting grouping in a few places

100 rep. I can do it!!

:-)
@stuffe Interesting.
I need to go through all the unanswered question and upvote and answer if possible

6 in a row from the same (new) guy

Not all, mind you, but some.
@stuffe Wait, who?

6:38 PM
@daviesgeek that is what i have been doing to help

6:56 PM
@jmlumpkin Yup. It's a good thing to do.
Man, the main site is hopping today!

Hey everyone - I asked a question since I want recommendations on iPad apps for stock tracking - but I also want it to be useful to the site in general.

@bmike I saw

What applications do a good job of using the new iPad's retina display for stock data? http://apple.stackexchange.com/q/45237/5472?stw=1
Any critical feedback on whether my criteria for excellent is too high or not high enough?
suggestions to edit this to make it more clearly worded? (I also caught some typos) feel free to brainstorm / tear it apart here or just edit in the typos if you catch any more / fix formatting, whatever.
And @jmlumpkin - I hope your question I tweeted the other day makes you a badge soon for a nice question - we've got a lot more nice questions being asked here than the measly eight questions linked that have earned that badge in the last few days...

7:23 PM
@bmike hope so too.

Hey, I'm a bit confused. I see my Level 2 at 100%, and I got a notice that I completed level 2, yet I'm seeing 18/20 with 2 votes. The progress bar is full.
Did I hit the requirements and then get downvotes?

I think so
The code seems a bit wierd.

So what happens?

Ask the guy who wrote it, but I suspect there is a disconnect betweent he bit that calculates votes score, and the flag that sets when you meet the requirements.

The contest rules doesn't state wether the votes need to be maintained or not.

7:25 PM
In that the flag doesn;t unset. Maybe that is on purpose. Who knows.

@balpha, know who I'm looking for?

Ask on MEtA
@daviesgeek None of them pique my interest today. Shame, as a few more votes seals L3.

Q: Am I at Level 2 or not?

Moshe(Obligatory) Eeeeeeek! My progress bar shows that I've hit level 2. I've received a notice on the site. However, the number of shares and questions/answers with 2 up votes has gone down. I can understand the Q&A getting downvotes, but how can a link be unshared? Is something broken?

@bmike I would take out the requirement for the application to be retina ready. After some time all applications for iPad will hopefully be retina ready.

@Moshe Did you get downvotes or unupvotes in your reputation history?
@gentmatt Disagree on this point, they current sell both types of display. When the iPad 2 is dropped we can stop differentiating, until then it's a valid difference
@moshe -2 1 hour ago downvote Is the boot time of an iOS device affected by the apps that are running at shutdown?
-2 1 hour ago downvote Is there a list of punctuation commands for iPad dictation?
both of those currently 1 vote each, so were 2 before the downvotes.
As to whether you technically still quality or not I do not know, I suspect not, and that the slightly edge case of meeting the criteria then losing it wasn't fully tested

7:40 PM
22 hours ago, by balpha
@TimothyMuellerHarder Once a mission is completed, it won't be revoked automatically if the criteria aren't met anymore. We can revoke them manually, but we'll only do that if the mission was achieved only because of serial upvoting or similar issues, but not just because some downvote got you below the threshold again. Chances are that another upvote is going to come in anyway :)
Took me three minutes to find that, so it'd better help >:(
;)

Not that I think it will prevent Moshe from getting up to the criteria again, there's plenty of time, but I disagree with this stance. Just for the record. If ultimately the community don't upvote it enough, then it shouldn't qualify
Consider: You get 4 upvotes, then 2 downvotes. This becomes eligible for L2. Same question, but your votes come in a different order. You get 2 down, then 4 up. Doesn;t qualify any more. The bar should be it's end result, not it's journey.
Sounds like ignoring the bug for the sake of convenience to me.

@stuffe It won't really apply much, anyway. Don't think there's anything to worry about.

Yeah, I think it's severe edge case for it to affect anyone, certainly by the end of the comp, but I like neatness and a lack of ambiguity in all things, and I don;t think the system is quite there yet and needs pointing out, if only to make it better for next time.
@balpha Thought I would ping you to make the above points, in case you weren't aware of the potential implications. In this case as you say no-one will lose out, but the system can still be improved

7:56 PM
~topic change~
I only *just* found out that "accept rate" meant "percent of my questions with accepted answers" rather than "percent of my edits approved by a mod." Just boosted it almost 20% o.o

@TimothyMuellerHarder That other kind of "accept rate" would also make sense (I also queried Data.SE for that a while ago). "How often, when I'm not the only answerer, do I get the checkmark?"

@JarrodDixon Thought I would ping you to let you know of @stuffe's above points.
(hang on, *test*)

Sorry. :) Carry on!

Who is Jarrod?

@stuffe One of the developers.

Yeah, they are erring on the side of caution. I can see how that is wise. It's inconsistent tho. Take the suspended user who was barred for a week for vote rigging, he still has his points.
Even though 19 of his 30 votes have been cancelled from his rep, they still count to his progression in the contest: -191 10 hours ago reversal Serial upvoting reversed
That should be a minimum of 19, would be a lot more if the were votes for his questions, not his answers.

We were talking about sock puppets yesterday, and it made me wonder. What if someone goes and upvotes somebody else on a ton of their Q&A, but the person wasn't telling them to? Who is the one that gets suspended?
Does the person rigging the votes get suspended, or does the person getting the votes get suspended? I guess this would really be a question for @balpha

8:23 PM
Very good point, because that is a FINE way to get someone eliminated, sock puppet the competition to death....
This is why my main disagreement with the way the thing is being run is the fact that others can see your progress and identify potential winners.

@stuffe that's an unfounded accusation -- in fact, just pretending would have been easier
it's deliberately happening the way it is

Exactly. It wouldn't be fair if just the puppet got suspended (especially if the puppet is the actual person), and it wouldn't be fair if the person getting all the upvotes got suspended (in that particular situation).
@balpha How are sock puppets being handled? It would be very unfortunate if someone started rigging the votes and getting other people suspended.

@balpha It's just a thought, I'm not suggesting anything ulterior or questioning your stance

I don't understand where you get the idea from that someone would get suspended for being upvoted
that makes no sense whatsoever

Well, this guy got suspended:
He has had a lot of rep removed.
You can't vote for yourself
Ergo, someone voted for him serially, and he got the suspension

8:28 PM
I will not discuss any specific cases, for obvious reasons. But the idea that I could throw you a ton of upvotes and then suspend you as a cheater really makes no sense.

He had between 19 and 38 upvotes worth removed (depending on if they were for questions (5 points) or answers (10 points), which is co-incidentally about the number of qualifying votes (31) that he has for the promition so far
We're just discussing potential permutations.
And in the case of the only piece of concrete wrongdoing, it would seem that the only way he was suspended was because he was upvoted lots by someone other than himself

Since I'm neither comfortable with (as I said) discussing particular cases, nor with your suggestions that we suspend people for doing nothing wrong, I'll just leave this here:
A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception. The term—a reference to the manipulation of a simple hand puppet made from a sock—originally referred to a false identity assumed by a member of an internet community who spoke to, or about himself while pretending to be another person. The term now includes other uses of misleading online identities, such as those created to praise, defend or support a third party or organization. A significant difference between the use of a pseudonym and the creation of a sockpuppet is that the sockpuppet poses as an independent third-p...

I think you are taking it like we are criticising, we aren't, we are just discussing what can (and seems to have) happen(ed)

We're really just speculating.

If I had a big issue, I would META it. As it stands your algorithms are clearly working to catch people, and I'm happy with that, we are just working out hypothetical scenarios which could play out. Not because we are worried about them per se, but because this is chat, and we like to, well chat ;)

8:35 PM
Thinking ahead and discussing what could go wrong is what we do ;)

Hmm, left already. I was going to say before you leave, I appreciate you coming in and responding to the pings. We know you are actively monitoring the situate and have the best interests front and center, and we (well, I certainly) appreciate it

I agree.

@gentmatt congrats man. Big week for you. 10k + a new iPad.

@stuffe There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding here

Man, I freaking knew someone was going to game this contest. :)

8:41 PM
Algorithms don't suspend people
People suspend people
after looking at what's going on

@balpha No, but you know what I mean, they pick it up, and report it to you. That process is working.

It is quite strange that the first person to get to Level 1 got suspended for serial votes.
Maybe they check for IP addresses with the accounts?
Speculating. Again.

20 mins ago, by stuffe
Very good point, because that is a FINE way to get someone eliminated, sock puppet the competition to death....
that ^^^ claim is the one I object to

You are taking chat out of context, if I could go back and put a big fat on it I would.

I understand that you don't consider that a good thing
My point is that you think it would work

8:44 PM
I bet it could be crafted in such a way that it could work.

So to clear that one up, this isn't an accusation, this isn't saying that is how it can or will work, that is just saying it's a potential scenario, someone could try it, even if it is futile

13 mins ago, by stuffe
I think you are taking it like we are criticising, we aren't, we are just discussing what can (and seems to have) happen(ed)

And given that the first person to achieve any criteria was suspended, it seems a valid topic for discussion, which is all it is
@balpha I know you can't discuss individuals, but simply looking at the facts available to us (I appreciate you have way more facts) someone was banned, they have had a lot of points removed, someone must have given them to them, and they couldn't vote for themselves, and although the rep is gone, the progress through the competition remains.
The rest is discussion, the above is fact.

Finally made it!!!!!!!!!!!!

@IanC Thanks Ian!

Q: How can I use an Apple remote control with customized actions without having the button actions happen?

Timothy Mueller-HarderI want to use a white plastic Apple remote with BetterTouchTool to control Safari, but while it works, the default button actions (e.g. skip, volume up) still happen. How can I prevent this?

8:49 PM
@gentmatt you tore it up these past two weeks man. Really crazy watching you grow that rep.

@TimothyMuellerHarder I would have posted my answer already a few days ago. But I felt stupid giving merely a software recommendation. This however is really the only solution that I've found.

@bmike I hope you don't mind my edit on your question as I changed the tags.

@IanC I'm kind of surprised myself. I don't really deserve the moderator privileges.
I'm planning on handing out some bounties within the next few days.

@gentmatt so modest. You earned it man.

Bounties should be fun.

8:51 PM
@gentmatt Day-um:

@stuffe In that case we have huge differences in our understanding of the differencese between discussion, speculation, and accusation. I apologize for the misunderstanding; I'm not a regular in this room.

@AndrewLarsson Not for the person whose head it's on…

@balpha It's fine, I really appreciate you having a go at engaging our concerns.

@gentmatt To echo Ian: You have been crazy!!! 3.3K+ this month!!

8:52 PM
@jaberg What do you mean by that?

@AndrewLarsson It's a joke.

Due to the competition my rep has been jumping a bit fast, i know :)

@gentmatt you going to let us in on the person behind the mask? Your profile is lean. :)

@gentmatt You do deserve it, you earned it (to again echo Ian :-)

Like a bounty hunter joke. Gotcha.

8:53 PM
@IanC 100%

@AndrewLarsson Bingo.

@balpha And just joining in our chat :)

@IanC You mean profile pic?

Well - I really appreciate the people speaking about the contest - and the SE folks helping out, but I want to remind people of two things with regards to suspensions.

8:54 PM
@gentmatt nah. Some personal background that's all. Website? Twitter? I think all of the top people here know a bit about each other now.

Website would be nice. :-)

1) Please refrain from speaking excessively about people that can't participate for a short period of time without being respectful of them not being able to participate in chat while a suspension is ongoing. (no fair assuming things when the person being talked about isn't around to explain)
3
2) Read up on the philosophy of a time out blog.stackoverflow.com/2009/04/a-day-in-the-penalty-box - people don't get suspended for really bad things since we want them back but in general had a moderation problem that needed some time to sort out.
3

@IanC I'll think about it. I know that this is certainly recommended. I myself enjoyed to finally see @bmike's real face on his profile. In fact, I assumed that @bmike was some young university student before I saw this real face. :)

Q: Can I stop mobile Safari from opening my bookmarks whenever I start the app?

Ian C.Whenever I start Safari on my iPhone it insists on bringing up the last bookmarks folder I happened to be in. Is there a way to disable this behaviour and just have it present me with an empty page when I start up the app? I don't use bookmarks and the process of waiting for that bookmark view to...

iOS 5.1 to the rescue! Man that bookmark popup stuff drove me nuts. So glad it's gone. I still tense up a bit when I open up Safari and think I'm going to have to wait for my slow-as-molasses 3GS to bring up the bookmark list so I can clear it away and get to searching the Googles.
@gentmatt :) Nice. Now you've got a new follower.

It certainly is inconvenient with the contest ongoing - but do put some trust in the team here moderating - we're running the site and the SE employees are running the contest and in this case we are making sure both teams are working together to make sure all the goals are being met fairly and as best as humanly possible.

@gentmatt I look older with a beard.

@bmike good points, I think the case can (should) be closed for a while, if I can say one thing more it's that I am glad the ugly has happened early, because it's out int he open, and everyone from CHAOS to us magpies can appreciate that you can't hide so don't even bother

@IanC Actually the city is Cologne/Köln. I've moved recently.

Most people peg me at late 20's when they see me initially professionally and then mid to late 30's when they get to know me better.

@bmike Whoa! You have a profile pic now! Cool!

8:59 PM
@daviesgeek Congrats on 5K, BTW!
@daviesgeek He's had one for a while...

@gentmatt What about his photo makes you think he isn't a young university student? When I first met him, I assumed he was fresh off the campus at Berkley or (to provide local color) The U. ;)
