@jaberg I generally agree, except in the case of a self portrait. I've learned a lot about myself from behind a camera.

Chat topic migrated to Photography

@NathanGreenstein :) It's a great portrait if you feel it reveals something about you.
@TimothyMuellerHarder This chat has no true topic, it's a conversation.

@jaberg /joke
Admittedly not very good.

@TimothyMuellerHarder On the back of your complaints about us talking about Microphones here a couple of weeks ago, I didn't take it as a joke— I took it as a passive aggressive remark.

@jaberg Oh, sorry! No aggression, passive or otherwise, was intended.

12:09 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder No worries. I'm not sitting here planning my revenge. Or am I? ;)

Ominous music.
Camera pans across a desolate Minnesotan landscape and zooms in on a tiny speck on the horizon.
Zoom accelerates until we see a man on a computer.
Music heightens.
The man turns his head, punctuated by a flash of lightning and rolling thunder.
Roll title.
JABERG'S REVENGE

Now is the time for it: LOL!!

@daviesgeek hah, sorry. :D
Thanks.

:-)
Wow! 34 pageviews on my blog today! Cool!

Nice!
My all-time record is 75, on the ides of March last year.
Not surprising, I suppose.
Mostly it's under five, though :\

12:18 AM
My all-time high was on March 7th, 189+ pageviews, all from new people!!
@TimothyMuellerHarder here's one pageview for you
@TimothyMuellerHarder You have a page rank 2 blog!
And there's a comment for you too!

@TimothyMuellerHarder I live in a city, but if I ever get a bunker up north, you've described the scene well.

@jaberg We know the film industry messes with originals for dramatic effect anyway. ;)
@daviesgeek Thanks!
@daviesgeek Any particular referrer?

@TimothyMuellerHarder Yup!
@TimothyMuellerHarder Google. On the search 'iPad 3 live streams' or something of the like

(Hm, one view from Germany today... @gentmatt?)
@daviesgeek Ah. makes sense.

Yup. I found that posting stuff right after I find out about it really helps

12:27 AM
@daviesgeek Oh, absolutely.
I don't really have much of a way to do that :\

12:40 AM
@daviesgeek @stuffe Just curious, how close are you two to the Research Assistant badge?

@TimothyMuellerHarder Solution here

A: Can I globally change the cmd-Q shortcut to require holding for two seconds, like the option in Chrome?

Daniel LContinuing on jtbandes' solution, once you have remapped the standard Quit command to a different keystroke (yes, sadly, you need to remap it manually for every application you are worried about accidentally quitting), you can create a service in Automator that takes no input. It should have a si...

12:56 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder 16. And you?

Is there anything (other than just voting up, hoping asker sees, etc) we can do to make this the answer?

A: BBEdit - The authenticated save for this file failed (application error code: 20004)

DovI emailed Bare Bones's support about a related issue, and they sent me a link to a support page, which provides a workaround for the MAS limitation. They provide a script you can download into BBEdit's Application Support directory, which adds the feature back. No need to abandon the MAS after all!

@daviesgeek 16 away, or 16 total?

@TimothyMuellerHarder No, BBEdit auth saves

@daviesgeek I'm at 26 total.

@jmlumpkin: let me know if u need any help with AutoHotkey... I've used it for a while

1:02 AM
@Senseful I may try it. I really didn't want to install anything on the (work) laptop. Was thinking about doing something similar on the Mac though, like with Keyboard Myestro or the like

Keyboard Maestro! that's the name I was looking for

@Senseful I also just got a license for Typonator, which can now run scripts. Even though its supposed to be more of a auto complete, im assuming i could still possibly have it trigger something on hitting a function key, then may run a script to send over F10

@jmlumpkin I was thinking textexpander could do something similar, but didn't see it as one of the documented features

@Senseful Finally, I may just give up and learn to use Fn + F10 more often. I had to re-learn option-arrow to jump across words, its control-arrow on windows.

how often do you use the non-function keys? (e.g. mute, play, pause, etc.)

1:08 AM
@Senseful Yeah, its just like it, just got it with the current MU promo. It would be a bit of a hack (basically running a script to type keys, if it even pics up the function keys).
@Senseful a lot. When I work from home, Im on my iMac RDP'd into work laptop. I always listen to music.

@TimothyMuellerHarder: thanks for the edit!

@Senseful There are some apps in the MAS that supposedly let you flip that setting on and off on the fly. I may look at that too. Or maybe even script it, like have a script to disable function keys, and then start RDP client.

@Senseful Sure. :)

@jmlumpkin MU Promo?

@Senseful Mac Update. $50 for VMWare and a bunch of other apps mupromo.com/appbundle.php

1:12 AM
@jmlumpkin oh sweet, thanks for the link

@jmlumpkin What do you mean?

@Senseful NP. As for the question though, I was really hoping for an App that does this. CoRD has gotten so bad, and the Microsoft app gets very close, but just wish I could add key commands.
@DanielL The answer that was just posted is the answer, as of now. The currently marked answer was right until this feature was released.

50% to Fanatic.

Only the OP can accept an answer. The two options are to edit the selected answer to include updated information (keep the answer intact, but add the info to the end) or upvote the new one. If the OP happens to come back (doesn't look too likely), he can change his accept, but we can't do it for him.
Wait, you're here, @TimothyMuellerHarder

(just replied to your comment)

1:25 AM
I'm pretty sure the answer is "no" then, without seriously hacking the OS.

@jmlumpkin What question/answer are you talking about?

You don't leave a lot room for creative problem solving.

@TimothyMuellerHarder BBEdit Authenticated saves with Mac app store version
@DanielL I may do an edit on the answer

When you edit, leave the original answer intact. This is one of the rare cases where I'd advocate chronological additions (i.e. a post-script at the end).

@DanielL will do. SHould it reference the 'correct' answer, or just say that auth saves are now a 'feature'

1:29 AM
Perhaps something like "As of _, BareBones has released a script users can add on to enable this feature..."

1:40 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder Canonical answer
Proof by exhausting all the options. Quite possible, given the limited answer space you created.

Great job. Five "stars". :)
(Oh, one typo though: "I have 69 keys non-modifier keys…")

done
Woa, the other mods descended into the room.
no, just Kyle and Nathan. Not everyone at once.
Hi guys

@TimothyMuellerHarder Total.
@TimothyMuellerHarder Nice edit. My first edit to approve

@daviesgeek OK.
@daviesgeek Sorry, what?

2:01 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder This edit Good crop.
@TimothyMuellerHarder Regarding tag wiki edits, I shall beat you tomorrow. :-P

I'm back. Crap, I need some more people to ask some JailBreak questions (I'm really not a Mac power-user).
Mac questions usually stump me :|

@daviesgeek :(
@daviesgeek Ah, thanks. :)
Quick, someone give me something to vote on!
I'm at 298 total votes; that's two away from Civic Duty.

I'll give you some stuff!

Q: Where is the dividing line betweent the two iOS partitions?

Andrew LarssonI know that iOS has two partitions, but I've never found anywhere that gives clues as to where they split. Is one partition on / and the other on /var/mobile/, or are all the user profiles (/var/root/, /var/wireless/, etc) on the second partition (at /var)? Is it possible to resize these partitio...

@TimothyMuellerHarder You're climbing up quick on Level 2. Nice work!

2:18 AM
@AndrewLarsson Thnaks!

2:31 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder Just look in the unanswered section.

AHAHA If you want to see the funniest tag wiki typo in the history of Ask Different, look at before my edit is accepted. XD
For lazy and/or future people: "Google's web browser, for viewing web pages on the internet. Based on the WebKit rending engine, currently available for Intel Macs."
@daviesgeek Already did.

2:48 AM
@TimothyMuellerHarder Indeed nice work on the progress in the contest. Even better job on the tag wikis - some really great contributions to the site. Thank you.

...the heck? My rep history shows that in the past hour or so, I've had eight accepted tag wiki edits. The RA badge progress, however, says I've had one. Strange; I hope it's just being laggy.
@bmike, Oh, thank you! And you're welcome :)

Many badges fire daily - so depending on the server's time zone, you might need to wait until tomorrow afternoon to see that badge.
@AndrewLarsson I am amazed how mac centric this site has become during the contest.

@bmike Kind of ironic...

Especially with the new iPad being launched - THREE MILLION new cases that do boatloads of literally hot pixel pushing and we're all mac-ing it up here.

2:51 AM
@bmike Precisely. When I first came here, there was a lot of variety, but all I've seen these past few days is Mac this, Magic Mouse that :/

Just wait until you see the blog post for tomorrow. It's even worse than mac questions - it's about server and mac software update.

Not that that's bad or anything, but it's just not balanced.

"Maccing"?
New verb of the day.

@AndrewLarsson I think a lot of people will stick around after this rush and really find some quality content here. Especially once people get over the newness of iPad and the next one month lull gets people thinking about how long we'll need to wait for more new shiny from Apple.

@bmike "...copy and paste is also a single item with no sort of clipboard history unless the device."

A: Is there an app that allows users to take multiple photos and upload them all together?

bmikeWhy yes - the iOS photo picker has been modal for some time now and allows one picture to be selected by apps that use the long time iOS API to access the camera or the picture roll and albums. Furthermore, copy and paste is also a single item with no sort of clipboard history unless the device....

2:58 AM
@bmike I totally agree. From what I've gathered, that's what I presume the goal of the promotion is. It'll be really nice to see what happens.

@TimothyMuellerHarder Thanks - time for a rest...

@bmike OK, good night. Don't bite the bed bugs

I'd love to give MaxRied a shout out for his reflow oven comment - hilarious! apple.stackexchange.com/a/45271/5472
@TimothyMuellerHarder Ha Ha - time for food and a motorcycle ride to go downtown perhaps

3:13 AM
@bmike oh misunderstanding I guess haha

3:24 AM
Well, I'm not posting iPad questions or answer because I don't know much about them.
Of course if I won one... :-)

you could still post questions about the iPad

They wouldn't be informed ones.
Maybe that's a challenge.

Before I ask this question, does it fit within SE guidelines?
> While iOS is known for its ease of use, it's not without its UX flaws. What are some things you find counterintuitive about iOS that a new user might as well?

sounds subjective

It's probably not the best fit.

you're looking for personal opinion

"What feature of iOS 5 has made you smile or caught you off guard?"
@Mahnax Oh, hello. :)

3:35 AM
that question is a) educational, b) has broad appeal, c) is well-maintained, etc

Hi!

@Mahnax (and I saw that edit... -.-) ;)

@TimothyMuellerHarder Sorry, I'm used to being harsh.

If I woke up as bacon, I'd eat myself. I wouldn't be able to help it.
Maybe that will help.

We have interesting discussions over there.
Are any of you squeamish?
If so, speak, or forever hold your peace.

Q: Can the new iPad record dictation while recording audio?

Daniel LApple has featured Voice Dictation as one of the marquee features of the new iPad. Either through a app that ships with the iPad or an App Store one, can the iPad record audio (as for a podcast) and at the same time transcribe the text therein?

but it is good to seed the site with iPad questions

of course, now dictation has stopped working on my ipad
grr
I'd answer this question right now, but dictation isn't working for me

@KyleCronin It's out to get you.

Q: Does PhotoStream copy videos too or just still photos?

Daniel LIf I use PhotoStream to sync photos from an iOS device and my Mac, will it transfer videos too? Are the higher resolution videos from the new iPad treated any differently than other devices?

@KyleCronin suddenly I care about the question.
