4:00 PM
I don't know how to spell them
So i just spoiled them

I don't know if his "claim to fame" would be sixth sense or signs
signs fits other clues

I still think it's "twist"
since that's what he's "known for"

true

but sixth sense is probably the more famous of the two

The movie list - chick flicks, romance ,

4:01 PM
agreed

(I saw Signs in the theater... it was bad)

What about the switch?

love stories

unbreakable, on the other hand. I really liked that one

was clueless a romance?
I haven't seen it

4:01 PM
Haven't a clue.

I disagree with clueless being a chick flick, but that seems like what they're going for there

Cute, Chris

lol

I mean, it has romance elements, but it's a comedy
a teen comedy

4:02 PM
Notebook wasn't a teen movie though.

Definitely wouldn't consider The Notebook a tween

yeah
like I say, I assume they're going for "chick flick" with that one

It's a put the wife in the mood movie.

haha
Can't say the same for Clueless and Twilight

4:03 PM
"Hey, Honey, let's watch Clueless."
Deadpan stare response...

movies based on books?

nothing like watching a girl fall in love with her stepbrother paul rudd to get a lady in the mood

if Clueless is
I feel a little silly googling "clueless book"

clueless is based on emma

You
@question_asker How exiting!

4:04 PM
Ah
Okay
Exit, stage left.

so yeah, they are all based on books

I just couldn't figure out book switch

But, to be fair, most movies are.
Which is why that netflicks category "Movies based on books" is useless.

You
Stuart Little! YAY!!

4:07 PM
The original was EB White.

Yeah
his first award was for Sixth Sense

A switch of these may prove catastrophic. - Glasses of wine with iocane powder.

Never get into a battle of wits with a Sicilian, when DEATH is on the line!!

toy guns with real guns

You
@ChrisCudmore Nothing wrong with getting drunk and poisoned! :)

4:10 PM
protein shakes with just straight up shards of glass

As long as you build up an immunity to the iocane, I suppose.
lol q_a

Inconceivable!

You keep saying this word...

You
@question_asker I drink liquid glass. And it's delicious!

The title of the puzzle goes with the "book" theme, too

4:11 PM
OP has never asked a question. so we can't tell if his riddles are unambiguous or not.
BTW, that Heath Ledger one was great - completely unambiguous once you know the answer.

yeah
that one was so good

I never would have got it.
But once the answer was there, it was so easy to prove correct.

there were a couple of clues I wouldn't have gotten, but the rest fell right into place

Yeah, I figured that half of it would be relatively easy

4:13 PM
I especially liked the 10TIHAY clue

But I liked the guy, and his movies (with 10 things being one of my favorites)
So I wanted to post it

that was a fun teen based-on-a-book movie

yeah
It caused me to read the original

I guess "book" is loose here

fair enough

You
4:16 PM
I have no idea what's going on. :(

You are here. Imagine a red dot

OK so, worth noting about the riddle:

You

 You Are Here

Chat room for Travel.SE travel.stackexchange.com
You are here!

hah

1) it has a "lateral thinking" tag; now, those are often total red herrings here, because apparently almost no one knows what a "lateral thinking" puzzle is
but

4:17 PM
You is there.
Haha, right, q_a

2) the title makes it sound like it could be a lateral thinking puzzle (though... it isn't, at least in form)

I don't like lateral thinking puzzles as they always require you to make up a piece of information.

I really want to say "signs", but it doesn't match enough
but there's definitely no lateral thinking there

Fits the first two lines really well.

Q: Japan is in India

MichaelInspired by this question: Which country is INDIA in? Japan is in India. New Caledonia is in Lima. Greenland is in Quebec, but only during the winter. Portugal is in November in the winter too. Beijing is in the Hotel. How is this possible?

This was a decent lateral-thinking one

4:19 PM
yeah

Yeah

I liked those

I don't understand how a puzzle can be lateral thinking as well as riddle O_o

[country] is in [other country]
yeah, I agree manshu

You
Vatican City is in Italy.
I think.

4:20 PM
thank you..your agreement is hard to get :p

to me, "lateral thinking" generally indicates what are sometimes called "situation puzzles"

yeah

like, "here's a seemingly impossible situation; how did it happen?"

Lesotho is in South Africa

the main reason this site seems to hate them so much is that, really, you're supposed to sort of have a back-and-forth with the person asking the question

4:21 PM
Yeah, I think it's generalized, in use, here to mean more like: "Figure out the answer by thinking about it in a way you wouldn't normally do"

@Will there was one of those puzzles about exclaves!!

Yeah, that's why I really want interactive puzzles.
Omg...
I just thought of...
Okay, writing this down

because there is no way for a person to think of every possible response before building a puzzle; that's why people are supposed to ask questions. "was he wearing gloves?" or whatever
nice
KK's got the creative urge once again

It's something that's going to require a few days thought - I'll leave it, for now
but I have the idea down

that's good

4:23 PM
"and now even on a bus." suggests a recent development.

I kind of wish I'd written my poker question down
@ChrisCudmore something you can do with a smartphone, probably?

Could be, but I'd like to explore outside that.

unless there's been some improvement in bus technology I don't know about

I don't know how can someone forget a self-made puzzle

4:24 PM
Time for a coffee run.

@manshu Well, it was complicated, because it involved guessing the order of the deck after stacking and X number of shuffles and Y number of cuts and a regular texas hold-em deal

Yeah, I've only used a bus once, ever
So I have no input on the bus thing

i.e., if you knew exactly where every card was before shuffling and cutting, how much could you ascertain at various stages of a poker hand

And manshu, I have to write down all the notes of creation of my puzzles, and how to solve them, and test it, on occasion, or I'll forget how to solve mine.
2

I have played poker.

4:27 PM
It is the word of god. — Ian MacDonald 4 mins ago
why. do people. do. that.

that?

I mean, to me, that looks like at least a semiserious answer
but, you know, in the comments of the puzzle

but God is capitalized incorrectly =D
unless he's talking about some other god...

You must be an atheist :p

Sorry, I'm done - reading what you typed
Ah, yeah - I agree, q_a

You
4:28 PM
Oh, no! Not another war!!!

Let's fight over nonsense things

Words that I frequently have to remember which goes where: Capital; Capitol

there was a Certain Person here who would do that all the time. He's been back recently but not long. Mostly he did it because it was his way of saying "Your puzzle is stupid and only a stupid idiot would post it. So here's the answer, to ruin it for everyone else."

I'm not THAT bad
2

I think Ian may not be serious, though, in thinking that it's the answer.

4:30 PM
lol

You
I think the answer would be beliefs.

@Khale_Kitha That might be true

Although...that puzzle is just awful.

@Khale_Kitha I'm just saying, it seems like a reasonable guess
yes
but still

yeah
Although, if I were to guess at a being who was both Truth and Lie
I would guess Satan
personally

You
4:32 PM
Well, i < 3(Satan) can be interpreted as...
Well, you know.

Though this puzzle seems like it's intended to be wordplay

sometimes it's hard to tell

Yeah
Need a Meme. "Can't tell if missing a tag, or bad puzzle."

I'm not trying to be "funny" when I say this: sometimes it's just that the OP doesn't speak english very fluently

Hahahah - sorry, that was wrong!
Yes, true

4:33 PM
I'll refrain from voting this puzzle

Agreed with your comment, Chris
It makes it hard to take the puzzle seriously.
Honestly...

You

A valid answer to the puzzle would be "words"
I knew someone would do it, You

You
Hahaha

Or, it could be a clue. But if it isn't, it's like those: Hello I am a programmer from... [question text] Can anyone help me?

4:35 PM
Yeah

also I hate the change to Hugh's puzzle

Which I always edit out. But I'm reluctant to on this stack, as everything MIGHT be significant.

Need to find it again, q_a
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, Chris

What's the code for yellow background usually seen in riddle questions?

4:36 PM
>

use >

oh the quote thing
Finger on the trigger there, Chris?

@Khale_Kitha it's not a big difference, it's just that they changed it all to dialogue-style dialogue

ROFL

yeah.

4:37 PM
It is, admittedly, a lot easier to read - at least for me.

It reads more naturally (for me) the way it was originally written

Omg, how many times are we going to have to vote on closing this magic wall puzzle...

A different close reason,e very time

Focus on puzzles, not the etc part.

4:38 PM
that's a dumb idea

That's why I don't do startups
2

Ah, apparently it did close once, and got reopened.
So it's a close/reopen war, then.
Aaaand...skipping.

nice
haha

Yeah, see my comment on the question as to why it was closed originally.

Yeah, I remember that he needed to answer questions
But then he did and it got re-opened, from what I can tell.
Now being voted as off-topic.
Part of me wants to vote "too broad" on "Many people value me above their brains" just because of the title - without reading the puzzle.
Mua ha ha ha ha

4:41 PM
yeah
haha

Then you fear q_a

I'm joking, of course - okay, back to things

I think that wall is a pure math problem, and should be off topic.
See:
http://meta.puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/1319/should-mathematics-questions-really-be-on-topic-here
First answer.

but then so are all the other math problems here

oops. Wrong meta

4:43 PM
math dressed up with a story is still just math

I haven't actually read it in-depth, to be honest, Chris
the puzzle.

Q: Are math-textbook-style problems on topic?

xnorThere's been some recent questions on the site that are problems from math textbooks, or problems in that style. Doubt : Pokemon Hunter and the Rogue Brook Groups of Farmers Cows eat to much Who is corrupt in the Senate? Can the car or the bike travel further? how many times 12 men may shake han...

I think we should all make a team and collectively vote a puzzle to close. That will be so much fun

I tend to gloss over those type of puzzles.
No, GLaDos

I'll just tell you guys I'm voting to close and actually vote to reopen

4:43 PM
@manshu That could be interpreted as Cyber Bullying.
Q_A already has his own bully.

who?

a Moderator

the mod

You
Dun dun dun...

4:44 PM
It's YOU!

You
MUAHAHAHA!!!

oh...if you are talking about that language comment then

I don't think you'd have to dig too far in the chats to see that it's l u k a r m E

he can't find his name this way

@manshu oh, that one is sometimes troublesome but he's ultimately fine

4:45 PM
nice

I guess I just haven't seen it, q_a
But I also haven't been looking

I mean, even if he did find his name, what's he going to do? Get mad that I said that he did something that he objectively, demonstrably did?

Admittedly, you are ranty :P

Emrakul...look what he just said

...but so I am at times.

4:46 PM
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
yeah
ranting, or any kind of complaining about things isn't a crime.

You
¿Por qué no?

True, but moderation isn't about crime =D

iska kya matlab hai?

Just like I keep removing the [very] rare starred post that really shouldn't be starred, hahaha.

which one?

4:47 PM
I don't remember - I've only done it like 3 times, ever

I'll make sure to keep starring it

rebel

q_a needs a cause.

true

4:48 PM
are you talking about starring chat messages, or starring posts on the site?

chat messages

chat

because... don't remove other people's stars.

Look at this:

Q: Crazy ants colony

klm123 Ants have eaten some of Professor Halfbrain's food and gone completely crazy. They built an underground colony in the form of a perfect tetrahedron. All of its space is divided into anthills, each of which is also a tetrahedron (which may be of varying sizes). Each pair of neighboring a...

those aren't for you

4:48 PM
I'm going to if they are vulgar, lol

He even gave the purely mathematical formulation.

You
I thought that it said that the ants ate half his brain. :P

Yeah - everything related to the halfbrain ones - I just kind ignore now

oh...that's where Prof. Halfbrain came from

They're over my head, for the time I have to put into solving

4:50 PM
I VTC.

my dream is that some day, someone will VTC every single math puzzle
because either they all go, or they all stay
"they were made by a popular guy" is not a reason to keep something that otherwise would be deleted.

yeah

You
Math is ment to be frustrating, I think at times.

I like the meta
So, what makes something a math puzzle rather than math problem? I think there's a few features.

Clever or elegant solution, often an "aha" moment
Unexpected problem statement.
Unexpected or counterintuitive result.

that's arbitrary though

4:52 PM
The problem is that there's also "good" math puzzles.

a lot of problems here, I would consider to have an "aha" moment

I would claim that "1 + 1 = 3" is a valid math puzzle
...but not good.

You
You can't remove a whole topic without removing good problems.

...because I don't know the math necessary

I think that meta I quoted lays out the criteria very well.

4:53 PM
and if I learned the math in the course of trying to solve it, it would be an "aha" moment

Yeah

it lays out extremely subjective and arbitrary criteria out well

I also don't like pure cryptography questions. crypto.stackexchange.com can have them.

Really, though, Chris...

yes, I agree with you there, too

4:53 PM
Those exact lines up there..
2

You
I hate cryptography.

Describe better than Math Puzzle
2

KABOOM!! and I am out of the room.

You
@Khale_Kitha Logic puzzle that is categorized incorrectly.

thank goodness @manshu is gone
2

4:54 PM
lol

lol logic puzzle is a mess

You
Yep.

partially because there's a specific thing that has been considered a "logic puzzle" for over a century, but when they get posted here, there's always some insufferable turd who's like "hmmmm, the man with the grey car could have had a haircut earlier in the day, hnrrrr"
"so, seems like this isn't 'logical' at all pushes glasses so far up his nose that his finger breaks"

To me, a logic puzzle could, theoretically, be fully symbolized and solved.

You
Theoretically
Not reality.

4:56 PM
"logic puzzle", to me, means those grid things

Well, sometimes it gets too big, and intuition has to help out.

You
To me, logic means `boolean`. Simple, right?

NOPE!

well, that misses the point

Btw, I hope your bounty isn't wasted, q_a
I don't think they actually help, on this site..

there is a literal industry devoted to "logic puzzles" which are the exact thing I've described

4:58 PM
@You That's more or less what I said re: symbolization.

You
Meh.

Yes, but the grid is just a tool for solving complex matrices of symbolic propositions.

to expect outsiders to automatically know that we have an entirely different definition than the rest of the actual real existing world is ludicrous
hell, to expect insiders to know or hold to that is ludicrous
