12:00 AM
@JacobBlack Now there are too many books. But if I were to choose one, it would be Educative JEE by KD Joshi. It was a high school math book with really great commentary.

user19161
@OrangeHarvester Really? Not any higher level math?

@JacobBlack Higher math, there are too many. I love Lang, Artin, Rudin, Kunze, Munkres, Ahlfors, Greene-Krantz etc etc. No single one to choose.

user19161
@OrangeHarvester Which Lang book?

@JacobBlack Linear Algebra, Undergraduate Algebra. I also had his "An Introduction to Linear Algebra" in high school, a small cute book on very basics of LA.
Spivak, Strang.
I also have these books by AMS, Problems in Mathematical Analysis (3 volumes) which I think is relaly cool.
Rather than think about books I like and which one is best, I have found that I am better off remembering which ones I did not like that much.

I have to retake my algebra studies.
Vacations have hit strong.
Along with Skyrim.
Darn.

user19161
12:06 AM
@PeterTamaroff Jacobson is very good.

@JacobBlack Yes. Few exercises though. Mariano said "there are better places to study from."
Let's forget he ended a sentence with a preposition and focus on the math, boys.

user19161
@PeterTamaroff It's OK to end in a prep, really.

What is the most common preposition, boys?

user19161
Is it "of"?

2nd^
close..nice try

12:10 AM
@JacobBlack I have seen them, but I have not read them.

user19161
@robjohn It's good enough to smell and touch them.

@robjohn Do you want to venture a guess?
2 mins ago, by skullpatrol
What is the most common preposition, boys?

user19161
@skullpatrol Is it "to"?

Yes #1

I went to market to buy some fish to cook some dinner to satisfy my hunger to keep me health to keep me happy to make me enjoy my work to help me being productive to help me work harder to help me make more money to go to market to buy more fish.

12:13 AM
@skullpatrol in or off would be my guesses

@PeterTamaroff That radio channel is good.

@OrangeHarvester Are you listening to "your love is an airplane ♪♫"?

@JacobBlack to is a more common word, but I think it is more used because it is part of the infinitive

@PeterTamaroff yes.

I have to stop it now. I'll watch Game of Thrones.

12:16 AM
Okay. I will keep on listening.

@robjohn Also "of" is related to "off."

@skullpatrol "piss of"?

@skullpatrol when i was 12, the teacher challenged us to say as fast as we could all preopisitions, it was fun!

@Charlie And sounds like a great exercise...

@JacobBlack What?

user19161
12:21 AM
@JonasTeuwen I was writing what you would say if I start talking about the 9000 books I have touched.

@skullpatrol yes:a, ante, após, até, com , contra,de, desde,em,entre, para, perante, por, sem, sob, sobre, trás :D

@JacobBlack Oh. Thanks!

Hello all!

hi
@Charlie :D

Has anyone read The Hobbit?

12:24 AM
I don't, but I bet @JacobBlack touched it.

I'll take that bet.

user19161
@JonasTeuwen Nah, I only touch math books, and I try to touch people's hearts.

@PeterTamaroff yes

@JacobBlack That's very good.

@PeterTamaroff IT'S AWESOME!

12:25 AM
(the latter)

@JonasTeuwen What did I win?

@skullpatrol Asskicking.

@JonasTeuwen Gee thanks.
...remind me not to bet with you next time.

The pleasure is all mine.

@skullpatrol I bet

12:31 AM
@Charlie On what?

@skullpatrol anything

@Charlie I wasn't that amazed!

@PeterTamaroff WTF????

@Charlie OK I'll ask you next time ...

@Charlie I mean it. I liked the first half of the book better

12:33 AM
@PeterTamaroff C'mon...

A little bit maybe, 75%.

@skullpatrol ;)

@Charlie Hey you said last one ;-)

@skullpatrol but you cameback

@Charlie True :-\

12:34 AM
@skullpatrol :D

@Charlie Is there any difference in meaning between :-\ and :-/ ?

@skullpatrol maybe, i dunno
what did you say, @skull ?

@Charlie I was going to set up a convention for the meanings and decided to check Wikipedia first.

@skullpatrol oh, ok

1:10 AM
@JonasTeuwen Are you there? There was a book that taught analysis using nets and filters that you mentioned. Which one was it? I would have to take a look at it.

There was one?
I know Aliprantis, but you will suffer your cherries off.

Aliprantis is this one?
By the way, I just found this by Beardon .
which is supposedly based on nets according to this answer on MO by Michael Greinecker.

No, Infinite dimensional analysis.
Hell yeah - Tchaikovsky.

Hi @Jacob Blue

user19161
@OrangeHarvester Beardon's book is very very very good.

1:22 AM
@JacobBlack Does it really mention nets and all? The sole reviewer says it does not.

user19161
@Argon lol

I'm having a "blue"/"black" day, myself...

Ouch

user19161
@OrangeHarvester It uses "directed sets", that is what I know.

user19161
Yes, I have studied large parts of this book.

1:23 AM
It's winter here...and it's raining/snowing, and has been dreary all day...I need sunshine...and warm weather!

user19161
@amWhy Where is the black?

@amWhy Hehe. We have lots and lots of snow here too

@JacobBlack okay. Hmm. Good I think. I will download and skim through it.

user19161
@Argon Canada is always colder as it is further north. I need less sun here lol.

@JacobBlack Come to U of T!

1:24 AM
@JacobBlack I was thinking of Argon's hello to you "Blue"...so thought of your color, and added your last name, as it is too appropriate...

@JacobBlack You practically live on equator, you evergreen forest dweller. :P

user19161
Sometimes it gets to 34 deg here in the day.

@JacobBlack Well, I live in a place where it is 48C in day in summer and 4C at night in winter and it fucking rains at 4C and I love it. So, no one is allowed to whine about temperatures when I'm around.

user19161
@OrangeHarvester I read that people died from the heat.

@OrangeHarvester 4C is cold?
}:)

1:27 AM
@Argon When day temp goes to 34C, 4C is cold at night. (We don't have any heaters in our homes here btw.)

@Argon ;)

We get pretty darn hot in summer, and pretty darn cold in winter...
I love spring and fall here, though...

Fall is saddening
School starts. Gets colder. Leaves fall.

@JacobBlack Yes. you can get a stroke if you are not careful. We call it the "loo". It is very very dry and hot wind, which can induce unconsciousness (better word not found yet). So, we have to dress up like bedouin arabs with all the scarves and all.

user19161
@Argon After leaves fall, fall leaves.

1:28 AM
@JacobBlack hahaaa

@Argon Yes, I agree, sort of bitter sweet: glorious temps, beautiful color...but the impending winter...

user19161
@Argon The great poet Jacob Blue.

@JacobBlack You are a poet and you didn't even realize that you were one of them.

I love all kinds of weather as long as I have decent environment to eat, work and sleep.

user19161
@Argon I am a banana.

1:29 AM
@JacobBlack Hahahaha

user19161
@argon I remember how you flagged that banana line once, hahahaha.

@JacobBlack everyone flagged you once

@JacobBlack Banana does have some overtones.
@Charlie Not me.

@JacobBlack :) It can be flaggable at times

there's always a first time

user19161
1:31 AM
Seriously, bananas are yummy.

yes

Very true. But not as good as mangoes.

hahaha

user19161
@Argon Now I must flag mangoes, hahahaha.

I love all fruits

1:31 AM
@JacobBlack Do it.
:)

user19161
Anyway, the ex mod Robin Chapman seems to have vanished from the site.

OK, guys.
I have to choose.

Choose me!

user19161
@Argon Oh noes!

1:37 AM
The latter has higher butter per cookie, it seems
Yum!

Off to the kitchen!!!

@JacobBlack I could use your help, J! ;-)
Are you going to hunt for bananas? or mangoes?

Tally me banana

@amWhy Ooo, now that's interesting.

@PeterTamaroff Can you bake some for me?

1:44 AM
@PeterTamaroff Which did you choose?

I haven't eaten anything warm for...well, I can't really remember...Oh!!! I had coffee when my brother visited from Eau Claire (he brought it!)...that was, hmmm, a week after Christmas...

@amWhy whaaa? nothing warm? Do you eat everything frozen?

hahahahaah

No...just room temperature, or from the 'fridge'...too lazy to cook...though I was a good cook, when I did cook...

@amWhy microwave? I just re-heat on the stove.

1:50 AM
@OrangeHarvester No, I haven't used either for a while...I eat cereal out of the box, rely on dairy for protein, and nutrition/protein bars...and fruit...that's about it...I've got to perk up...just been too "down" to treat myself right :-(

@amWhy that is not good. :-(

@OrangeHarvester No...I know...I've got to change that...

@amWhy I hope you do.

@OrangeHarvester Yeah...just start with "baby steps"...once I build momentum, I usually get rolling...just sort of in a rut...

2:07 AM
@JacobBlack yes it is, and I sure am glad :)

user19161
@Raindrop Why do you prefer UCB to UCLA anyway?

user19161
I hope it is not because of the ranking.

user19161
Rankings don't mean much to me.

@Argon The second.
@amWhy There are plenty for all!

@PeterTamaroff Yummmm! I can only dream how good they must taste!

2:19 AM
@amWhy I had no brown sugar, which is a downturn! =)
I mean: =(

@PeterTamaroff Hmmm, never had chocolate chip cookies without brown sugar...do you have molasses?

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Well, I don't really eat snacks, you can save them for yourself.

@amWhy Nope. They are done though. They are the whitest cookies you'll know! =)

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Do you mean whitest?

@JacobBlack Yes.

2:35 AM
I think this is the longest answer I've ever posted on this site...
0
A: Projectile Motion - Finding initial velocity

anortonThis is probably a better fit for Physics.SE... I'm going to assume you are ignoring air resistance, as there's no Differential Equations tag. Part 1 We have from conservation of energy: $$\Delta K + \Delta U_g = 0$$ $$\frac{1}{2}m\left(v_f^2-v_0^2\right) + mg(y_f-y_0) = 0$$ Dividing by $m$ an...

Brown Sugar is also a grade of heroin.

@OrangeHarvester What?

2:51 AM
@PeterTamaroff Yeah. It is popular among drug users here, cheap too.

@OrangeHarvester Oh... it is a codename.
@amWhy OK, they are done

@PeterTamaroff Yes.

I had to make a second batch though. In a bigger oven.

Something interesting from the wikipedia:
"The cultivation of opium in Afghanistan reached its peak in 1999, when 350 square miles (910 km2) of poppies were sown. The following year the Taliban banned poppy cultivation, a move which cut production by 94 percent. By 2001 only 30 square miles (78 km2) of land were in use for growing opium poppies. A year later, after American and British troops had removed the Taliban and installed the interim government, the land under cultivation leapt back to 285 square miles (740 km2), with Afghanistan supplanting Burma to become the world's largest opium

The first batch was too cramped and is a little too thick.

2:53 AM
@PeterTamaroff I'm impressed by your industry!
and innovation!

Hey Guys! I have a Discrete Maths PSet activity tomorrow and I'm looking to see if someone is willing to help me through it. We are allowed to work in groups and unfortunately, I don't know a lot of people in the class so I'm turning to you! I'm willing to pay you graciously for you're help..it'll take around an hour to do!

@user28229 That is pretty awkward!
@amWhy What do you mean by my industry?

Why is that awkward? haha

@user28229 Well, I'm in South America.
And Orange is in Asia
@user28229 Get to know your people in class, man.
Or woman.

Why does that make a difference? haha
I mean your location*

2:57 AM
100,000,000USD is sufficient, eh?

I know..unfortunately most people I have spoken to are just as lost as I am!

@user28229 Did someone say pay?

Yes

@PeterTamaroff Motivation...effort...follow-through: "industry" meaning "work-ethic", sort of.

I would be willing to pay

2:58 AM
How much? (I am kidding really).

@OrangeHarvester NOOOOOOO
You spoilt it!

Are you serious about helping me, Orange?

@OrangeHarvester Ah, measuring the level of despair.

I can't really tell..(sorry)

@user28229 In what currency will you pay?

2:59 AM
USD

@PeterTamaroff I am kidding as in, I am not willing to help. I have to go in around 20-30 minutes or so.

Paypal
(if that works?)

@user28229 not me. I have to go. Sorry.

@user28229 Come one, dude. You have to get to know the people in YOUR class.

Well I'd need the help tomorrow

2:59 AM
That's why they are there.

Not tonight

@user28229 What would we do? Skype with your teacher?

Yeah, Skype chat
It's just an in class PSet group problems

@peoplepower :-) :-)

So we're allowed to openly discuss and speak with others

3:01 AM
@user28229 Why won't asking for solutions on site work? That will be much much better with awesome solutions I feel. (Unless your prof has a problem with that.)

Just go to chatroulette.

@user28229 You all Skype? You don't meet?
Oh, and what is PSet?

Orange - the class is only ~1.5 hrs long. I'd do that if I knew I'd have enough time,but I can't rely on people answering in time, you know? haha
PSet = Problem Set

Could you share the problem set? What is the topic?

It's an in class assignment, he is giving it to us tomorrow!
It's discrete maths class

3:03 AM
Ohh.
So, its a discussable quiz?

No, our class is just doing so poorly it's for extra credit and freely discussable, open use of notes, computer, partners, etc.

okay.
What are the topics?

Discrete Math proofs pretty much
Simple ones if you've taken discrete before
I can provide some example problems
If those look easy to you, then you can probably help! lol

Looks easy, but I would rather not.

@user28229 They are not hard.

3:07 AM
Unless, of course, you are offering 100,000,000USD.

Hmm. I might be just stringing you along. My schedule currently is somewhat awry. So, don't rely on me right now.
Also, not the one to lecture, but if you are having problems with that, then I think there is something more serious that the full class is doing poorly.

Unfortunately I can't afford $100,000,000USD

@peoplepower You're too greedy to be red.
@user28229 I can make you the following offer.
We can discuss that problem set, solve them, but you ride solo tomorrow. (Or at least not with me)

@peoplepower I heard that is the practice in hollywood, if someone asks you to do some work and you don't want to do it, you just quote a huge price. Unfortunately, sometimes some dumbos take that price.

@OrangeHarvester Why is it unfortunate?

3:08 AM
@user28229 methinks the same, tomorrow you are solo. Today I can help.

Peter - I'd really appreciate that. I'm just worried that I don't fully understand these concepts such that trying to get the concepts down from the beginning would really be banking on a lot going right which I can't really guarantee =(

@peoplepower It causes artificial inflation. Today one dumbo pays higher price, tomorrow someone else does, and slowly over the period of two to three years, everyone charges a higher price and depending on the industry, you are generally worse off.

I planned on getting a tutor after this to help get me caught up, but for right now I just don't think I can ride solo and get enough done on my own in time..I mean unless you think this stuff is learnable to a complete amateur in time for tomorrow haha

@user28229 So, what do we do?

@OrangeHarvester mkay
@user28229 I assume you can see why the set union and intersection statements are false. I think you can outline a proof that there is no smallest rational number, right?
Oops, no smallest positive rational number is what the question asks.

3:15 AM
I don't think we'd have time to have me fully understand haha. Even if I did..it's going to take a lot to even get me to know how to apply these methods to different sets

@user28229 For the rationals numbers thingy.
Let's say I give you a rational number $\frac pq$ with $0<\frac pq $
Can you find another rational number $\frac mn$ which is positive, yet smaller than $\frac pq$?

Don't have LaTEx installed if that's what you're using?
lol
Is there really nobody here who's free tomorrow to help out for an hour? I'd be willing to pay a lot (per hourly rate, lol) ...

Frankly speaking, anything less than 100million usd per hour is not a lot.
Anyway, the timing is important; believe it or not, we actually do activities beside help people with in class assignments.

I know, haha, I just figured a lot of maths guys would be by a computer during work =P
I mean I could do maybe 1/1000000 of 100,000,000

@user28229 For $a_n=a_{n-1}-5$ you can use telescopy
Write it as $a_n-a_{n-1}=-5$
If we sum from $n=1$ to $n=m$, we get that $a_{m}-a_0=-5m$
Do you know what it means for a set to be countable?

3:30 AM
it satisfies a function?

the set and some function are in a relationship and report high romantic satisfaction, yes.

@user28229 "It satifies a function"?
@anon Dude.

Well it looks like I'm just going to fail this =\

Bro. Man. Pal. What?

I'm trying to pay someone to help me complete a PSet that we're allowed to work with people on
Nobody wants to take me up on the offer =(

3:34 AM
Well, my defition of countability is that the set $A$ has the same cardinality of the natural numbers, which boils down to finding a bijection $f$ from the aforementioned set to $\Bbb N$. One may also say finite sets are countable but I like to just say they're finite. If a set is either countable or finite, I call it at most countable.
@anon How's it going?

aight

I'll up the offer to $100 if anyone is magically free tomorrow...

@user28229 I think math people are not that attracted to money!

I know..sadly that appears to be the case =(

@anon How's the study?

3:37 AM
Looks like I'll be forced to withdraw from the course sigh

fun, fun, fun

@anon Oh! How good.

Reminds me that I should learn some representation theory someday.

I read about a problem today with a mind-blowing solution.

@anon Do tell.

3:40 AM
@anon tell us about it.
My mind fails to detonate, some problem with the igniter.

A countably infinite sequence of prisoners are lined up in a row as #1, #2, #3, .... and the warden places hats on them, each having a color among a set of some cardinality (possibly infinite, or even uncountable). Each prisoner can see all of the hats worn by those standing in line after him or her, but cannot see their own or any of the ones before them.
Each is given a chance to guess his/her own hat color, starting with #1 and going down the line - a correct response will let the prisoner go free. Nobody hears anyone else's guess or which if any before them were right and got to go free. Find a strategy the prisoners may concoct beforehand that will necessarily save all but finitely many of them.

@anon This is the famous hats problem taken to a new level!

Intuitively, one would feel this is impossible.

Something to with the cardinality $2^{\aleph_0}$?

3:47 AM
The solution I heard uses choice in a very clever way.

Also, when you say they can see the colors of the hats after him/her, you mean #2 can see #3,#4,... or just #1?

#n can see the colors of the hats of #(n+1), #(n+2), #(n+3), ...

And can process all those colors in the required time?

yes, they have infinite memory and processing ability
spherical cows, etc.

Uncountably cool problem.

4:01 AM
That is amazing. I am just imagining labeling them with random real numbers.

2 hours later…
6:18 AM
Hello everyone
I find that there is no "formal-groups" tag!

6:49 AM
Is there an "informal-groups" tag?

Hmm, I wonder what an informal group could be...
I moreover have a strange confusion:
When one asks why a theory is important, one oft replies by saying :it could be used to solve some problems like this or that. Then, when one is confrinted with the question of why one should consider those questions at all, one says: it leads us to the theoretical development, and so is important...
I think this is a "cyclotomic" argument...

1 hour later…
8:08 AM
@awllower I think you mean "cyclic" argument--unless you were going to argue in the context of Logic(zeta_n).

I would call this chat room an "informal-group."

8:52 AM
Well, of course it should be cyclic
But I thought it would be nice to imitate the analogy from number theory^^
Hmm, I think what an informal group means: what I wondered was: what should a question tagged "informal group" mean? About such a group, andits mathematics? In any case, thanks for the explanations.
Hey, I am recentmy interested in such topics as "Hecke algebras", "Hecke characters", and some similar "Hecke" things. Is there a reference for this subject? Thanks in advance.

you must be one Hecke a guy
sorry bad pun

@awllower I would paraphrase Mariano for your answer to why should anything be interesting enough to study. Of course, Mariano will say it better in fewer words, but till then, I am the poor substitute.
"A property P is interesting to study as long as it is not endogamic, that is, it answers questions whose formulation/description does not require mentioning property P".
2

Cow.

@Riem what do you mean by one Hecke a guy?
@OrangeHarvester Thanks for this clarification. Very nice!!
@JonasTeuwen I am not sure what you mean by Cow, so I googled, but got nothing...
Would you like to shed some light on it? Thanks.

9:07 AM
Hmm, I know what a cow is, but know not why you said that.

@JonasTeuwen Buffalo.

9:20 AM
Buffalo buffalo buffalo (...).

Mooo

it's objective fact that buffalos > cows.

9:36 AM
Do we dring milk from buffalos?
Or from cows?
Any way, it is irrelevant here of course.

9:47 AM
@JonasTeuwen Hi.

Hi.
@awllower Can be mozzarella of the milk!
@BenjaLim I don't see aggression.
He actually gives you a tip, but he seems irritated a bit.

@JonasTeuwen Yes I gather that, I dunno why.

Hello!
@Glückliches Neues Jahre!!
Wait, I typed wrongly;..
@BenjaLim In any case, happy new year!!

@awllower same to you too.

I remember a strange thing: When I was a freshmen in elementary calculus course, I wrote a sentence like: "..., for otherwise". Because I had seen something similar in the books by Weil, I thought it would be fine. However, my assistant said that this is incorrect grammatically. So I would like to know if this is an acceptable usage in English?
