11:00 PM
@user58512 :)

Kentucky fried chicken !

@JacobBlack like mine. You would think I am a really amateur in math if you look at my post. But as you all know, I am a big pro.

$\Huge\text{KFC}$

i prefer kfc to zfc :)

user19161
@OrangeHarvester HAHAHA. Well, hint: the real pros are those who call themselves bananas, shh...

11:01 PM
mathoverflow anyone ? :)

Mathoverflow is for pros. It's hard enough in here.

I have exactly 1 rep there. I cannot even vote. It is kind of depressing (not being able to vote). :P

@OrangeHarvester ahahah
@Y'all Do NA universities fund international students for their masters?

user19161
You know @ora some undergrad lecturer of mine actually said he doesn't think I am good enough to do research. I guess he had no idea how much my conditions were affecting me then.

conditions ? illness ? @JacobBlack

user19161
11:03 PM
@mick Yes, I am not well...

@JacobBlack sorry to hear. im not perfect either and my teacher is sick too

user19161
@mick You said you have no degree. Who is your "teacher"?

@JacobBlack unofficial. a chess friend actually

@JacobBlack Hmm. Yes that can be the case. I think that too many (for good or bad, I am not to judge) careers have been changed by the simple line, "I don't think you are good enough to do A."

Hitler , you are not good enough for politics or the army.

11:06 PM
I am of the kind, "you don't think I'm good enough? well, some nice words"

irronically that has been said to him

@mick not sure if it was correct, he did lead his country to disaster later.

@OrangeHarvester I don't think anyone would say that to someone unless they thought it was for their own good.

user19161
@OrangeHarvester What I do know however is that I was always correcting the non-trivial errors of lecturers in class.

@OrangeHarvester its correct. im just a kid without education but i know my stuff :)

11:08 PM
@mick no, I mean, I am not sure whether the prophecy came true or now.

@OrangeHarvester Im more or less a pacifist. when it comes to killing masses anyway.

user19161
Also @ora I did not really take part in competitions in school. Perhaps I should have.

hehe i did but i got no degree

@GitGud Yup, well-intentioned $\neq$ good. :-) My undergraduate advisor was always like don't get so beat up about the courses, you are good at research, study what you like. (That was in electrical engineering though and I think it was good advice for me.)
@JacobBlack You should have.

@OrangeHarvester Even if he's right, you need grades to be able to research...

user19161
11:10 PM
@OrangeHarvester I wonder where I would be now in life if I were not sick.

my memory is insufficient

@GitGud Yes. I have grades, that is not a problem.

All I have to say is "it is never too late."

@JacobBlack No one use wondering, you are only delaying your goal. Just start away right now.

\o/

i ate too much ....

11:13 PM
@GitGud My point was, people can be terribly imperceptible when dealing with advise. A good advisor will be very careful to declare his opinion. A bad advisor will be quite brash. The trouble is when you are young and impressionable, you might be affected more by the bad advisor than the good one.

@OrangeHarvester OK!

im not feeling well. bye guys ...

@user58512 Where did you go? I was enjoying your questions.

@mick bye, take care.

@mick Bye.

11:14 PM
later

bye

user19161
@user58512 Are you required to do any research for your masters, or is it just courses?

its just exams on the lectures I take

user19161
OK, then not too bad.

but I don't think I can pass enough exams

11:16 PM
Sounds like a lot of memorization.

user19161
@user58512 Can you tell us the courses you are doing now?

number theory and group theory

user19161
Only two?

@JacobBlack Chaging "courses" to "girls" makes it so inappropriate to ask.
Unless you're in the bro-circle.

user19161
@PeterTamaroff Haha, we don't know if it is a he/she. =)

11:18 PM
Hopefully a she who likes girls.

How many sides does the bro-circle have?

user19161
@user58512 I actually kind of hate algebra, LOL

@skullpatrol Only finitely many bros can fit.

does anybody know how to specify startup files in windows in magma

i didn't take some courses I should have done, and I dropped some others - it isnt going well

11:20 PM
It is interesting that this answer got the bounty and 16 upvotes when it uses calculus. Not using calculus is what makes the problem difficult.

user19161
@user58512 Is it a one year course and soon you will be done with it?

yes

user19161
@user58512 I hope you can get into a decent PhD program if you wish to continue.

thanks
If I pass my exams I definitely can get in, I don't know what happens if I fail

@robjohn When did they start making more negatively voted answers lighter? (and harder to read)

11:23 PM
Do you guys know about the book A Mathematician's Survival Guide Graduate School and Early Career Developmen?

@GitGud By Krantz? (if yes, then yes.)

@OrangeHarvester Yeah.

user19161
Haha, you know what I am going to say about Krantz.

@skullpatrol I don't know. It takes a sizable negative vote to make it lighter, I believe.

@JacobBlack no.

user19161
11:24 PM
After that Jonas and robjohn will say something to me.

I didn't really mean to ask if you know about it, what I meant was to let people know it exists.

@JacobBlack Krantz is a wonderful teacher and writer!

@robjohn I agree. I loved all his books.

user19161
I hate all of Krantz's books!

@JacobBlack Hahahahaha. Why?

user19161
11:25 PM
Jonas: But you can't say that when you have not seriously read them.

@OrangeHarvester He was my mentor in undergrad. I took Real and Complex analysis from him and an independent study in Fourier Analysis

@robjohn Cool! The first time I studied his book was in high school, Techniques of Problem Solving. That was the one which really got me going on math.
@PeterTamaroff Have you composed it?

user19161
@peter How many girlfriends do you have now?

11:27 PM
@OrangeHarvester It is a radio!!!
Listen!!!

@PeterTamaroff Ahh, it says additional plugin required.

@OrangeHarvester WHich one?
@OrangeHarvester You can use VLC for chrome, maybe.
I seem to be using that

@PeterTamaroff asf something. It was on firefox.
I will try vlc now.

user19161
On linux, I use totem or smplayer.

@PeterTamaroff It seems to be a windows media player plugin.

11:32 PM
Bye @Charlie I hope you feel better soon.

user19161
@rob Have you seen Stein's 4 books in the analysis series from Princeton?

@JacobBlack Why do you hate Krantz?

user19161
@OrangeHarvester It seems a little wordy to me.

Finally, can playe. Needed an mplayer.

11:50 PM
@OrangeHarvester How's it going now?

@skullpatrol bye, Skull!

It is broadcasting amazing jazz.

user19161
As amazing as Pedro.

@PeterTamaroff Yes. I have to agree. Its really good.

@Charlie see you later...

11:50 PM
@skullpatrol see you ;)

@Charlie ;-)

@skullpatrol :*

@Charlie :-**

user19161
@ora What is the best math book you have ever seen/read?

@skullpatrol ;D last one

11:52 PM
can somebody tell me something really cool about complex analysis
i need motivation to study

@Charlie ;-D

and this entire discipline is awful.

user19161
@AlexanderGruber Yes. Complex and cool both start with the letter C.

@AlexanderGruber get a copy of visual complex analysis. If that is not enough, look up a book by Ablowitz and fokas which focuses on application. Complex analysis is terrible useful everywhere.

do you have anything short of reading a book?
like. you know. a cool fact or question or something.

11:57 PM
@AlexanderGruber If physics enough motivation? Or fourier transforms?
Or control systems?
Like how a control system is stable, only if the pole of its transfer function lies in the negative x plane.
