10:00 PM
agnostic/athiest can also be called weak athiest/strong athiest IIRC

@RavenDreamer Never said it was a religon.. I just said its the belief that no god(s) exist, and that they are vocal about it, it is a part of them and what they want others to believe

@YoureHandsome Blame @James
@James The "true" part was the rude part

I just believe there's no god worth worshiping.

@RonanForman What about me?

@OrigamiRobot Oh, Pardon me that is my cynical side that understands everyone is a hypocritical person

10:01 PM
Either it's powerless or a dick. So why worship it?

People call themselves what they want all the time, and because I am a cynic I am pretty full they are full of crap

@RonanForman citation needed

By the word 'True' I just meant by what that word ACTUALLY means, not what people think it means.

@James You implied that to be an atheist, you neeeded to actively convert others to atheism. You don't need to be vocal about something to entertain a belief.

FAE
@James The only thing I was intending to make a comment on was Dutch holidays.

user2334
10:02 PM
So guys, how about that latest Mists of Pandaria patch? Redesigned specialization screen? Whaat!

@badp?

@FAE haha, Germany still has them beat according to the list I am looking at

@James What does the word actually mean?

Takes up 3 pages and is literally around 100 days
Netherlands are only 1 page long ;)

@RonanForman just because you have power it doesn't mean you should use it. shrug

10:02 PM
>>> True
True

@RonanForman This highlights the flaw in most forms of religion or lack thereof

@badp Hence, "a jerk".

FAE
Leaving chat for now, later all

@NickT ah, Python

@badp Therefore is a dick.

10:03 PM
actually that's just tautological

@RavenDreamer Oh, I thought the whole argument was "world's always in war and famine and God does nothing about it so he's a dick."

@YoureHandsome According to one estimate, about 2.3% of the world's population are atheists, while a further 11.9% are nonreligious.[

@FAE Probably not a bad idea.

I see instead it is like "there's no need for God to mess with our daily life and yet he insists he should have a say in what to do and what not to do so he's a dick."
or somesuch

So, how many of you consider Atheism to be the same thing as Non-religious? cause apparently they are counted separately when estimating world population :P

10:04 PM
they're different

Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities.

@James As far as I can understand, atheists actively believe there's no god; if you think there's one you're wrong. Non religous people just don't care.

Not non-religious.. Just no gods associated with said religion.

if only for the fact that many people just can't be bothered to worry about if whatever deity exists when they just want to feed themselves
and praise Chairman Mao

Thinking you understand the motivations of a higher power is pretty arrogant whether you believe in it or not.

10:06 PM
@James I don't think they're the same.

@James Not sure a god-less religion counts as a religion. I haven't given that much thought though >_>

@badp yeah, Atheist vs Agnostic.. No God(s) vs Dont give a crap :)

@OrigamiRobot If this higher power tells you his motivations then....

@badp Buddhist?

@badp Um Buddhism is a religon
Buddhists are Atheists

10:06 PM
Unitarian Universalism is a religious denomination characterized by support for a "free and responsible search for truth and meaning". Unitarian Universalists do not share a creed; rather, they are unified by their shared search for spiritual growth and by the understanding that an individual's theology is a result of that search and not obedience to an authoritarian requirement. Unitarian Universalists draw on many different theological sources and have a wide range of beliefs and practices. Historically, both Unitarianism and Universalism have roots in the Christian faith. Contemporary U...

@James Again as far as I understood it agnostic means actively believing there's no way to tell, so religious people are wrong and atheists are also wrong.

@badp Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Neopagan movements[17] such as Wicca,[18] and nontheistic religions.

The Apprentice is such a pile of Wank

@John There is no such thing as certainty

Those are all religons that do not believe in gods

10:07 PM
@OrigamiRobot [citation needed]
How can you be certain of that?

> Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that establishes symbols that relate humanity to spirituality and, sometimes, to moral values.[1] Many religions have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred histories that are intended to give meaning to life or to explain the origin of life or the universe. They tend to derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle from their ideas about the cosmos and human nature.

I'm not sure I see the difference between a "nontheistic religion" and just "a view on morality and ethics"

@John Citation wouldn't prove anything.

user2334
@fredley I stopped watching when Omarosa was on.

@James Have you been to Dharamasala, where the Dalai Lama lives? It's full of, for want of a better word, Gods

10:07 PM
@badp Most Atheists also believe this, that the power of proof is rooted in those that believe to prove it not in those that don't to disprove it.

The Münchhausen Trilemma (after Baron Münchhausen, who allegedly pulled himself and the horse on which he was sitting out of a swamp by his own hair), also called Agrippa's Trilemma (after Agrippa the Skeptic), is a philosophical term coined to stress the purported impossibility to prove any truth even in the fields of logic and mathematics. It is the name of an argument in the theory of knowledge going back to the German philosopher Hans Albert, and more traditionally, in the name of Agrippa. Trilemma If we ask of any knowledge: "How do I know that it's true?", we may provide proof; yet ...

@badp that's "weak atheism"
Positive atheism is a term popularly used to describe the form of atheism that asserts there is no deity. Negative atheism refers to any other type of atheism, wherein a person does not believe in the existence of any deity, but without asserting there to be none. Strong atheism and hard atheism are alternates for the term positive atheism, whereas weak atheism and soft atheism are alternates for negative atheism. The terms negative atheism and positive atheism were used by Antony Flew in 1976, and are the more common usage in scholarly writing, appearing again in Michael Martin's...

@MarkTrapp I stopped watching years ago. Housemate loves it though

@fredley Find a better word

A religion discussion in here seems like a really bad idea.
7

10:08 PM
@badp Some people consider "spirituality" to be separate from "deity"

@James They use the term Deities.

I mean, I see myself as a Christian that really has a hard time buying in this whole "god" stuff. I still identify myself in Christian values, morals and ethics however. Mostly.

@Sterno Is anyone theistic in here?

@Sterno I think it's diverted to semantics though. "What does religion mean?"
At least it seems to be heading that way.

I wouldn't call myself agnostic.

10:08 PM
Ah, what the hell... I used my new 'credit card' to buy my father a birthday card via paypal, and it took all of the money I already had in the paypal (about $45) first, and then did the rest on the card...
Ballsack.

@OrigamiRobot That completely ignores the idea of having degrees of certainty in a fact

user2334
@Sterno Three things you don't talk about in polite company are sex, religion, and politics.

@MarkTrapp Citation needed. I don't see unpoliteness here.

SO MUCH CHAT, CAN'T KEEP UP

@Sterno but Atheism.SE was closed, so nowhere else to go

10:09 PM
@murgatroid99 There is no such thing as 100% certainty

@badp I very much believe in the golden rule and I greatly try to improve the quality of life around me. But I do not -care- if people want to say I am doing gods work or I have the spirit of Jesus.. That is up for them to decide. I am happy just trying to make my little world a better place.

It might await us down the line, but then again all topics can degenerate in pointless bickering, flaming and whatnot

@NickT We were directed to Skeptics, but I can't go there now they've got that awful yellow theme

But I do not go around trying to convince people there is no god, and I do not care if there is one or a thousand.

@MarkTrapp Now we've talked about all three of those things. Clearly The Bridge is full of terrible people.

10:09 PM
So I consider myself agnostic

@badp MY LITTLE PONY IS TERRIBLE
12

@OrigamiRobot That's true (except in pure math), but the problem is inference to "we can't truly 'know' anything"

@fredley I am, but I am fully willing to admit that I have no clue whether I or anyone else is right as far as deities go.

@NickT YOU KNOW WHAT'S WORSE. MY LITTLE PONY FANS
7

@murgatroid99 Not even math.

10:10 PM
I read most religious texts in the same light as I read philosophy. Again, Agnostic, Not Atheistic.

</kidding>

@fredley We don't really know if anyone here is theistic, and they shouldn't have to speak up if they are.

@badp I KNOW, RIGHT?

@OrigamiRobot You're my kind of theist

@James That's not what 'agnostic' means.

10:10 PM
@OrigamiRobot Math is all implications, which can be proved to be absolutely true within a given logical system

@Sterno I agree, just wondering, that's all

@fredley The best thing anyone can do as far as religion is realize that they might be wrong.

@NickT Truer words have never been spoken in this room before
@OrigamiRobot Agree

@murgatroid99 "within a given system"

There are agnostic atheists, and agnostic theists.

10:11 PM
I'm an Atheist, but I go to church a lot. Sometimes it's interesting (often it's not).

@fredley Discordianism :P

@OrigamiRobot The implications themselves though are still absolutely true, since truth always needs to be defined within the logical system that you are working with

@James I don't see that as a mark of being agnostic, just a mark of being a person who understands other people also have thought over about this and have reached their own conclusion about the topic and that trying to "win them over onto your side" is either pointless, rude or arrogant.

@OrigamiRobot Discordianism might be wrong!

@GnomeSlice Wikipedia puts it really well.

10:12 PM
If you want... the mark of being... uh, not a dick?

@Fredley It is interesting isn't it.

@GnomeSlice In the popular sense, an agnostic is someone who neither believes nor disbelieves in the existence of a deity or deities, whereas a theist and an atheist believe and disbelieve, respectively. In the strict sense, however, agnosticism is the view that human reason is incapable of providing sufficient rational grounds to justify the belief that deities either do or do not exist.

@fredley Maybe, but it accepts that no viewpoint is any more/less valid than another.

To that end, I choose Not To Care.

10:12 PM
@YoureHandsome Yes, I know, it says the same thing.
But I took religion in highschool.

@James The popular meaning doesn't matter. All that matters is the real definition.

@murgatroid99 Who starred this?!

@fredley wasn't me

@murgatroid99 truth != Truth

@YoureHandsome Read down a few more lines :)
You will find the text I cut and paste

10:13 PM
@OrigamiRobot I'm not quite willing to go that far. I am a scientist after all.

@fredley A derailist. It's the view that the truth values of certain claims—especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, but also other religious and metaphysical claims—are not dedicidble and will inevitably spiral out in pointless bickering :P

@murgatroid99 You posted it, you are dead to me

@GnomeSlice Yo. Whattup?

Agnosticism is the view that the truth values of certain claims—especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, but also other religious and metaphysical claims—are unknown or unknowable. (page 56 in 1967 edition) Agnosticism can be defined in various ways, and is sometimes used to indicate doubt or a skeptical approach to questions. In some senses, agnosticism is a stance about the difference between belief and knowledge, rather than about any specific claim or belief. In the popular sense, an agnostic is someone who neither believes nor disbelieves in the e...

(okay, okay, I'm done picking on you guys :P)

10:13 PM
@fredley Science changes (by gaining more evidence)

@OrigamiRobot fine, but as I said you can still prove absolutely the statement "X is true in logical system S"
@fredley have you never noticed my avatar?

There, so you all can read both pieces together though what I cut and paste is cut off at the end

@RavenDreamer I'm trying to upload the newest versions of the two music tracks I did. All I've done is added some panning to the mixes, but it's preferable to the old ones. But I can't.

@OrigamiRobot Yes. But a viewpoint backed with a load of evidence for it is better than a viewpoint with loads of evidence against it.

@murgatroid99 That is not the certainty I am talking about

10:14 PM
@murgatroid99 You are dead to me

@OrigamiRobot Then what kind of certainty are you talking about?

@OrigamiRobot Well I guess you're right in the sense that theoretically the higher power could be lying, but that's where faith comes in.

@GnomeSlice You do have my email. You could simply email it.

@fredley I did.

@murgatroid99 Absolute certainty.

10:15 PM
@RavenDreamer Clearly if I'm unable to get them onto the internet, that won't work either.

@OrigamiRobot that's not a definition. That's just an adjective.

@YoureHandsome I hate you

I already tried it.

@fredley That is how your brain rationalizes it.

@fredley Thanks. I try.

10:15 PM
@murgatroid99 It can't be defined

Truth is, absolute truth is absolute boring.

@OrigamiRobot Philosophy overflow.

That's the point

@YoureHandsome Daaaw

@OrigamiRobot also proved with Bayesian probability theory

10:15 PM
In metamaths and stuff, truth is actually defined to be a tautology.

@OrigamiRobot Then I have no idea what you are arguing

Q: Is there a relation between this game and the Fighting Fantasy book?

YaztromoThe first time I personally read the words "Firetop Mountain" was in the title of the book: "The Warlock of Firetop Mountain", the historic first "Fighting Fantasy" adventure gamebook, that pioneered a new genre, at the time. I found again the words "Firetop Mountain" as the name of a great play...

So stuff like "badp is badp"
yeah, that's true. woo. go maths.

@badp reflexive property
A=>A

I have a distinct feeling everyone is talking about stuff they are looking up on Wikipedia as they type

10:16 PM
@badp Not always.

@Lazers Oooh Yeah... We are a video game chat room :D

sadanduseless.com/2012/04/texts-from-my-dog NSFW Language if that thing bugs you.. But its HILARIOUS.

@OrigamiRobot Well the idea is that it must eventually be reduced to tautology to be "true".

@RavenDreamer Also, what do you think of this so far dl.dropbox.com/u/29281634/Orch2.mp3

10:17 PM
@James As previously mentioned, chat about gaming is off-topic

I would be happy to argue this all day, but I have to go eat dinner. Bye

@badp Its true because math is theory.. You define badp as something and then say something is badp...
@fredley sarcasm man, Sarcasm :)

@GnomeSlice Other than the fact that I've repeatedly told you I'm not good at providing musical criticsm? :P

@badp Who says the first badp means the same as the 2nd badp?

@GnomeSlice sounds like the title sequence for an action movie

10:18 PM
@GnomeSlice Needs more dramatic tension

@RavenDreamer Do what the rest of us do, smile, nod, tell him its good and slowly change the subject :)

@James Maths defines what it means in Maths for something to be True. It's not necessarily a definition that's useful outside of Maths.
@OrigamiRobot In Maths terms, the same symbol "always" means the same thing. See previous message

@badp Yup, Thats why math is a very theory oriented study ... you have to first accept that 1 really is 1 ;)

@badp All math is useful for is doing more Math. Studying Maths for uni taught me this.

@badp "in math terms"

10:19 PM
I'm sure math.SE guys can flood me in subtle niche examples where that isn't true

You are constraining things now

@fredley That's one of the things I love about Math.

@OrigamiRobot We are talking about Maths and Truth in Maths here.

@James Once you've done that, constructing N is a fun way to spend an afternoon
@YoureHandsome It gets old after a while, for a practical person like me

@FAE I just wanted to thank you for opening the religous door... ya got @OrigamiRobot to stop echoing people from the past so he could partake :)

10:20 PM
You can't go about and just apply Truth in Maths to something that ain't Maths.

@badp I am talking about Reality

@OrigamiRobot Too bad.

>>> "Truth" in "Maths"
False

@James Oh I'll be back

Go ask Reality what Truth is.

10:21 PM
@fredley Haha, I gave up at teaching people math when I found out how easy it came to me.. Math just makes sense to me and when it doesnt make sense to another person I kind of look at them with a great sense of pitty :D

@NickT Pointless Python is Pointless

Maths can tell you if something is True according to a Mathematical Model of Reality.

@fredley Monty Python is awesome :)

@James Yeah, tell me about it, that's the case with all the supervisors at uni

>>> "Pointless Python" is "Pointless"
False

10:21 PM
@James True dat

That hardly tells something about whether or not it is actually True in Reality, although it's typically enough to proving things False about Reality

@badp As well as we can understand it, yes.

@OrigamiRobot Models change, should the Reality's Truth change with it?

@badp Absolute Truth does not change.

10:22 PM
@OrigamiRobot Does Absolute Truth even exist?

There is no absolute truth outside of math

@Blem off topic

Has anybody actually defined it?

@badp It can't be defined.

@badp The Bible.

10:22 PM
in... uh... Realism terms.

@badp badp Take math the same as the rest of the sciences that use it.. Its our best guess at trying to label the things around us so we can have some kind of common understanding to try and describe what we see and what we think we see/know.

@NickT Depends on your definition of absolute.

To define it would be to unTruth it

@GnomeSlice Which one?

10:23 PM
@NickT For many people, God == Absolute Truth

@RavenDreamer You going to be around in a bit?
@YoureHandsome Many of them.

@badp It could all be wrong for all we know.. but so far its the best we have to go on :)

@James Sure, but religion ain't science. It'd be wrong to extend Maths concept of Truth to something that's not Maths. Or would it? I don't have an answer

@fredley yeah, but how can they prove that their God is that versus another god?

@Blem This should be our topic

10:24 PM
All I know is I'm feeling particularly German right now, what with all the uppercasing of proper nouns and stuff

crashes through a neat topic.

@NickT Don't need to

@NickT You're missing the point of Religion. It's not about proof. It's about belief.

@badp No idea, and since I do not really care.... I have no desire to ever answer that question :)

@Fredy31 ...and out the other side

10:24 PM
@GnomeSlice so why should they expect to convince me

@NickT To be honest, I never really understood the whole 'tell everyone about your religion and try to convert them' thing.

@James That's the great thing about not strongly caring about it. You can discuss it and just leave the topic alone, before @Arda gets to chime in about it
3

@GnomeSlice It is about control, religion is just a way of controlling the masses, just like TV!

I keep my religion to myself, and let others keep theirs.

Hi @ArdaXi, we're discussing religion.

10:25 PM
Hey @Fredy31 and @ArdaXi :)

@Blem ...No it isn't.

@ArdaXi's argument senses must have been tingling.

@badp ROFL!

@badp ROFLYSST!

...Writing Something Silly There?

10:26 PM
I'm hardly ever here these days, and when I do chime in, I come in to this in the starred list. Every single time.

@Blem Unfortunately, many corrupt people do this.

@ArdaXi We still wuv ya

@ArdaXi Thats just how we let you know you should stop by more often :)

@ArdaXi That's because we miss you <3

10:28 PM
@YoureHandsome I was almost expecting a 'Thats what he said' remark ;)

@James Not really.

@ArdaXi Well maybe we are doing it wrong?
If you were around more often you could tell us this :D
Whew, No more hate ;)

@James I don't think you're helping.

@YoureHandsome Who said I was trying to?

@Arda It's cause we know you're coming.

10:30 PM
Okay, so the religion debate seems to have died.

@YoureHandsome Like Gaming Discussion, in that respect

Is anyone else really confused reading "You are handsome like gaming discussion" ??? :)

@James No.

I dunno if being called handsome like gaming discussion is actually a good thing

@YoureHandsome is a terrible name

10:33 PM
Its like being called as beautiful as a warthog.

@fredley I'll switch back soon enough.
So, thoughts on this question?

Q: Is there a relation between this game and the Fighting Fantasy book?

so let's fail real fast at nethack

Yeah, burn that question with fire.

hah. The one time I don't check a chest 5 times for traps.
Now I don't recall if feeling "very sick" calls in an instant death
protip: NEVER move while stunned.
The kitten yowls! You kill the poor kitten!--More--

...that was cruel.

10:43 PM
@GnomeSlice meaning what, exactly?

EA truly is the worst company in the world: i.imgur.com/oTju1.jpg i.imgur.com/0kdcz.jpg

@RavenDreamer Here are the updated tracks, in .wav and .mp3 format.

I just discovered experience isn't split amongst the party in Grimrock. So when I've had dead guys, the other party members haven't gotten a bigger share... the party as a whole just got less xp. Boo

@Sterno How is Grimrock?

@YoureHandsome I like it.
I mean, the game's website gives you a pretty good idea of what type of game it is. So if that type appeals to you, I can say that it's well-executed
If that type of game generally doesn't appeal to you though, it probably won't convert you

@Sterno Yeah, I've never played that type of game before but have always wanted to. will probably pick it up at some point.

11:11 PM
If you can stand the crappy graphics, there's a free version of Dungeon Master available.
I never actually played that one, but everyone says they're very similar games

Q: How can I delete all saved game data except for the last one or last few per game?

Michael PrescottSo, I'm looking a few profiles that my kids and I have on our PS3. In those, we have saved game data for many games, and for each game there are literally hundreds... thousands of saved game data files. We've reached some sort of limit on some games (SkyRim and Uncharted 3) or perhaps on all. ...

Correction: I tried to play it a week or two ago. I personally couldn't get past the graphics. :)

@Sterno You youngsters and your graphics.

nite

@YoureHandsome I'm 10 years older than you! Also, it's hit and miss for me if graphics bug me or not. I mean, I can play the Avernum and Geneforge games no problem. Or just about any of the games I played back in the day. But this one in particular bugged me. So does the original XCOM: Ufo Defense

11:15 PM
@badp Cya

@Sterno Holy snap, you're 33?!?!
I thought you were ~25

@YoureHandsome Something wrong with being 33?
:P

@James Just considerably older than I thought he was.

@YoureHandsome Haha.. I have found most people act just about the same from age 20-40... and in the case of my dad 55 :D

Also, I know what you mean @Sterno. Some games I can play with terrible graphics, others... I can't even bear to play them for more than 5 minutes. The original resident evil games are one example of the latter.

11:17 PM
@YoureHandsome I love the final fantasy games, but I cant go backwards in them because of the graphics.. Not even for the awesome FF8...
(except 9.. I really do not like 9)

@James Now that wouldn't bother me. Although I'm not ahuge fan of anything after FF6.

@YoureHandsome Yeah. I think some of it comes down to interface, too. Some interfaces just did not age well.
I recently replayed FF1
But it helps to do it on a DS
I just watched the first 5 minutes of MLP
That's about all I could handle.

@Sterno At least you tried it.

@YoureHandsome I love the 2Ds and the 3Ds and I can play 1-6 again with no problem... but because my memories of 7 and 8 have the same visual quality as 10+ do for me.. when I go back and see them I get :(

It's a really good show, but certainly not for everyone.

11:22 PM
I am actually playing through 3 again right now on my iPad, and while its 3d its ok, I miss the 2D :)
And.. I have fond memories of creating a tile engine for the Zune
Where my test for the tile engine was Narshe from FF6 :D
@Sterno Did you find the peninsula of awesome leveling!!!?? :)
I love how after so many re-makes they have left that in there.

@James I found a hallway inside a cave where every step you took had some giants. I don't know about a peninsula of awesome leveling, though.

@Sterno Giant hallway in the volcano? :)

@James Yeah

Back towards the start of the game, when you go to the town with the pirates, there is a small peninsula to the east then north of that town (Provaka?)
On it spawns the creatures that appear later in the game near the elf town.. If you can get a random battle that is just like, one giant or 2-3 ice wolves, you can easily kill them at the level you are with one well placed black mage spell.. and POOF, awesome XP and Gold
Then you just rinse and repeat until your level 20-25 and then just go through the rest fo the game never having to grind again. hehe.
That place :)
I guess its official named place is 'Peninsula of Power'
Stupid chat! Stop pinging me, he said that 11min ago!
