I just won a free copy of Grimrock!
From that Reddit thread!

@Ullallulloo I don't know what grimrock is.
nor do I know what thread you are talking about (dawg yo dawg)

I'm ready for some Grimrock

@agent86 I don't get it, why are you saying I missed the second half?

@NickT I went on to explain why in the answer.
@Ullallulloo I need to get me one of these new-fangled redthat accounts. I miss out on these giveaways :(

12:08 AM
I know vague subjective discussion questions are bad; your answer never touches on that

@NickT it's two halves of the same statement.
the opposite of practical, answerable questions are chatty, open-ended questions
practical -> chatty / answerable -> open-ended

so the two are mutually exclusive and form a complete set?

I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I think there's a relation.

I understand the contrast, but I'm illustrating the point that people just quote mine that first bit
Declaring meme and history questions as categorically off-topic seems asinine; if they're bad (no research effort), then just downvote.
that doesn't mean they are all bad
I don't see what's so special about them

there are separate threads for both of those discussions, and if you disagree with those discussions, you should post something there
saying the logical conclusion based on those two decisions is to ban all the possible permutations of that argument does very little

it's just a strawman you've created
I can support the history ban (since it's one of those things that's not particularly answerable) but the memes one is more of something I'd agree with you on about downvoting

@agent86 Can we it? :)

@agent86 They should be migrated to humor.stackexchange.com

The arguments for prohibiting both of them both use the "practical problem" quote
@agent86 If we want to call out logical fallacies, that would be what, appeal to authority and quote mining.

@NickT For the jokes, I was going more for the "it's not a practical gaming problem"

Fallacy fallacy. Checkmate

Have Nazi's come up yet? Can we invoke Godwin's Law?

how's it different from any other trivia question

@NickT the FAQ's short, but people hate a lot of things. shrugs

user2334
@Sterno That's something Hitler would say.

@MarkTrapp BAM

12:25 AM
@MarkTrapp buuurn

@Wipqozn That's my line!

@NickT I don't know that I'm appealing to authority, if I have any authority it's terribly minimal considering the way people treat me :)

@OrigamiRobot You're just too slow robot tortoise shades

not making an argument, just stating my position

@MarkTrapp That link hurt my head :P

@agent86 We don't treat you poorly! Be quiet!

@Wipqozn yes sir :(

@OrigamiRobot oh snap

I'm just the janitor with the big keyring.
I mop up people's messes and I can get into the teacher's lounge.

@Wipqozn I'm freaking out, man.

12:27 AM
The snozberries taste like snozberries!

@agent86 That's a really good way of putting it, haha

@MarkTrapp if the end result rests solely on the argument, then how is that a fallacy
The question of "on-topic good questions" here isn't some fundamental truth of the universe

@NickT He said checkmate. There's no way you can counter that.

user2334
Fallacies come in, fallacies go out. You can't explain that.

12:31 AM
@MarkTrapp Watch out, we've got a badass over here.

Re: history, @StrixVaria's argument rests on saying the problems aren't real problems, so how is that any different from the rest of the trivia/plot questions

Q: What dragons do I need to complete the "Every Last One" achievement?

EBongoThe achievement text says: Possess every dragon in DragonVale... all at once. What is the complete list of dragon breeds needed? I'm hoping that limited dragons aren't included, since that would make this achievement impossible at this point. I'm also interested to know if dragons in the ...

Q: Is it possible to get data off of a dead PS3

kwelchIs possible to get the data off of the hard drive of a PlayStation that has crashed. I have already voided the warranty so I am not worried about that and I have access to quite a few tools. I have a new playstation and a few saves that were not backed u. I am not worried about them but if it i...

user2334
@NickT There's a statement that's up for debate. Whether one argument proving that statement happens to be fallacious does not refute the truth or falsity of the statement when other, more cogent arguments exist. Saying X is a fallacy does nothing.

@OrigamiRobot But @badp can do anything, so that doesn't count.

@Wipqozn Can @badp create an argument so good that even he can't beat it?

12:33 AM
@OrigamiRobot That sounds like the kind of question only badp could answer.

WHAR IS MY RASPBERRY PI, WHARR???

@agent86 I eated it :c

@OrigamiRobot he can't be wrong, so it's like schrodinger's cat. there's a superposition of states wherein he's right both when proposing and refuting his unbeatable argument
@BenBrocka noooooooooo

It was delicious and efficiently produced

but... but... now what will I hax0r on?

12:36 AM
@MarkTrapp so what is your argument for categorically axing history and/or meme questions

@MarkTrapp It does mean that one of the better arguments would need to be brought up to validate the conclusion

@agent86 Your C64 or TI83 calculator, of course

user2334
@NickT This is where the straw man comes in: I don't have to come up with an argument for categorically axing history and/or meme questions because you a) haven't defined what you mean by that by showing wrongfully closed questions b) it's not clear anyone ever made that argument in the first place

night ladies and agents
Swoosh

@Wipqozn troll ping

user2334
12:39 AM
@NickT Beyond that, you haven't shown why an ostensibly bad argument for banning history/meme questions invalidates the practical problems clause in the FAQ. Meme/history questions might not fit that definition, but it doesn't follow that the definition is bad.

user2334
@murgatroid99 Sure: one ought to attack the problems with the argument instead of invalidating the conclusion from the argument, though.

@MarkTrapp the arguments on the history meta post revolve around them not being 'practical questions you face'

user2334
@NickT StrixVaria's answer addresses a specific question and provides some criteria for determining if a similar question would be on-topic. Same for janlxndriv. FAE's answer asks for consensus. I don't see a categorical ban on history questions.

user2334
So I'm not in a position to come up with a better argument for something that's not actually true.

@MarkTrapp Strix makes it sound like the argument is against the entire class ('these questions')

user2334
12:46 AM
Why not ask @StrixVaria whether it's a categorical ban on the questions, and to clarify or expand the argument if it's not up to snuff?

I don't want to categorically ban trivia questions.
I think history questions are bad.
Whether that argument is a good reason to ban them or not, whatever.
I'm not getting any more involved in the argument than that I think questions should be judged on their own merits rather than doing categorical bans. (Except game-rec and ITG, of course.)
2

I'm cynical, but I forsee people voting to close future 'history questions' then pointing to your post as justification as based on the fairly one-sided voting it kinda looks like consensus

Feel free to edit my post to your liking as long as it still says history questions should be banned.

what would be the point then?

Meh.
I'm not worrying about the semantics so much. I see your point about possibly setting a precedent.
But if we actually start judging questions based on their own merits instead of what categories they fall into, that can be its own precedent.
Now it's dinner time.

user2334
12:51 AM
@NickT The FAQ is the place for quick rules of thumb, not meta posts. You're doing it wrong if you're using meta posts as a means to come up with categorical rules and maxims.

People are always saying see this or that meta post as to why they're closing a question
@StrixVaria true, I agree with this, but the more people hit 3k and look at meta once in a while to figure out what's currently policy, the more the mob can rule

I don't see us in a very bad state yet.

user2334
@NickT I don't see that as edict linking: I see it as people being helpful by pointing others the place where they can better understand the discussion that took place and participate if they so desire.

Q: How much experience do you get for feeding dragons?

EBongoI've found many references to getting experience for feeding dragons, and I recall the in game tutorial mentioning it. I've searched all over, and I can't find the exact formula for treats to experience. What is the ratio or formula for treats to experience?

ffs, why is my numeric integration off by 0.5% even with 5000 points
is that even possible or is my thing broken?

Q: Fastest ways to level multiple skills in Skyrim

TwistedChaosI am really wondering on just the fastest ways to level up the skills (Conjuration, Destruction, Smithing, Enchanting, etc). So instead of asking about a single skill I was wondering if we could all just do it in one go. See, I had to start a new game due to the lagg error and I want to get all m...
