@Lazers I think it has to do with holding breath underwater and swim speed.
Those are the only enchantments that make sense when it comes to water and Minecraft.
> Increases underwater mining rate
Breaking blocks underwater is allowed at regular speed, though the player cannot be floating to get the full effect.
Okay I don't agree with my developer friend
Risk of Rain is awesome
@KevinvanderVelden Ah.
@ElfSlice It is pretty fun.
Ah, that's what happen to Retro's Secret Santa post. Raven deleted it.
20:06
Why would anyone use E to interact?! Everyone know E is to call for Medic!
@Powerlord oh my
> Japanese Game Jams are culture is really weird. Period.
FTFY
Everyone knows E is dedicated for leaning right.
E is for elephant.
E is for Everyone
20:07
Shit, I died.
(btw, you guys did get that was a TF2 reference, right?)
@Powerlord One would think so considering it was you who said it.
"When you poop in your dreams, you poop for real!"
X is for "Jason!"
20:12
Oh my.
FAE
FAE
@TrentHawkins I play Saints Row 3 and 4 with both keyboard+mouse and controller. Controller is for driving, keyboard + mouse is for shooting. I simply cannot stand driving on a keyboard, I hate it.
Ugh, you can't use all of the menus with a controller in Risk of Rain
lazy implementation
reshvfrdf
@ElfSlice or just PC game
@3ventic That is completely irrelevant
It's much more annoying when games don't offer mouse driven menus
20:16
@FAE I still use keyboard+mouse for vehicles in BF4, but I have to switch to controller for air combat. It's annoying as f--k to control a helicopter or attack jet with keyboard+mouse.
My just cause 2 playing is constant swapping between controller and K+M
driving: sometimes keyboard, sometimes controller
flying: helicopters keyboard+mouse, planes controller
boats: depends on the speed of the boat
on foot: depends which vehicle I used last
> Yo, anybody wanna play Skydrift, biatch?
Greetings all
20:22
> I promise I'll go easy as fuck on yo thugged-out ass.
This is how @ElfSlice should talk normally.
@iKlsR such brain damage
lol: Da bridge on sticky-icky-ickys.
@iKlsR Is it sad that I instantly recognized that they replace "handsome" with "thugged-out" because how many times "thugged-out" appears in reference to @Wipqozn?
4
@mechanical actually, that usage of "anymore", as a synonym for 'now' is fairly common in certain rural areas of the south and Midwest.
20:24
@LessPop_MoreFizz Interesting.
> certain positive constructions <the Washingtonian is too sophisticated to believe anymore in solutions — Russell Baker>. In many regions of the United States the use of anymore in sense 2 is quite common in positive constructions, especially in speech <everybody's cool anymore — Bill White> <every time we leave the house anymore, I play a game called “Stump the Housebreaker” — Erma Bombeck>
Oh, so it kind of means "nowadays".
@MechanicalLoon Yes. That is correct.
It technically means the same thing.
20:26
@LessPop_MoreFizz I wouldn't restrict it to the South and Midwest.
Positive anymore is the use of the adverb anymore in an affirmative context. While is typically a negative/interrogative polarity item used in negative, interrogative, or hypothetical contexts, speakers of some dialects of English use it in positive or affirmative contexts, with a meaning similar to or . Positive anymore occurs in North American English, especially in the Midlands variety spoken in parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, and Missouri; its usage extends to Utah and some other western U.S. states. Positive anymore also occurs in parts of Ireland and Nort...
@david it's clearly most common in the Midwest by an order of magnitude.
@LessPop_MoreFizz True. But up here in New England it gets used that way more by people of lower education. I'm not sure why that is, it's not an incorrect construct, but that's who I hear using it.
@KevinvanderVelden Were you not here when that was my avatar?
@OrigamiRobot I was wished a Happy New Year today by no less than 10 people. (Assuming you don't have me on ignore.)
@david I'm surprised you're hearing it in New England at all
20:29
@OrigamiRobot I don't think so, all I remember seeing is your current one
If there's any dialect in the country where positive anymore is decidedly not a thing it's New England.
> Anymore we watch videos rather than go to the movies.
I have no idea what this means.
@LessPop_MoreFizz It is scattered just like your Yale source said. But, the people up in this area of CT have a bit of a country twang to them.
4 mins ago, by Mechanical Loon
Oh, so it kind of means "nowadays".
@OrigamiRobot it means you should go back to school and learn some bloody english
20:30
@KevinvanderVelden "Anymore" used that way is not standard English.
@mechanical yes it is.
@MechanicalLoon that was my point, let me rephrase. "It means whoever says that should go back to school and learn some bloody english"
> Everything we do anymore seems to have been done in a big hurry.
This one makes sense, but I wouldn't say it that way.
@LessPop_MoreFizz It's a regional thingy, but it's not proper prescriptive English :)
I'm glad to know what it means now, if I run across someone using it in the future. I won't use it that way.
> Positive anymore occurs in North American English, especially in the Midlands variety spoken in parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kansas, and Missouri; its usage extends to Utah and some other western U.S. states.[2]
20:31
I'm the first person to go on an anti prescriptivist tirade, but even the most virulent prescriptivist will accept positive anymore if they're educated
No, that's not standard english :)
American English has a fair number of regional variants.
FAE
FAE
@LessPop_MoreFizz My parents use this. I used to before I got older and moved. They both grew up in the Buffalo area.
Largely derived from the original languages of the primary groups settling in those locations.
@DavidM Is it 13 days from now?
20:33
@OrigamiRobot I don't understand the implication? I said it was polite to use it for UP to two weeks. Not to start two weeks from the stroke of midnight.
I'm still not quite getting you, there.
@fae buffalo English has more in common with Ohio English than the rest of New York.
For example, people in buffalo are filthy monsters who call "Soda" "pop".
@DavidM Then stop pinging me with updates as to your New Year's wishes.
FAE
FAE
@LessPop_MoreFizz I will always call it pop.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Are you also a regular on the English Language and Usage Stack
@LessPop_MoreFizz This is still better than people who call all different kinds of soda "coke".
20:36
@FAE Heathen.
@MechanicalLoon Truth.
FAE
FAE
@LessPop_MoreFizz South of Rochester, it's pop. Once you get far enough east to hit Syracuse, it's soda.
@david eh, I pop in every once in a blue moon.
It's soda everywhere; some people are just wrong.
@LessPop_MoreFizz It is weird that I find this so wrong despite the fact that it is grammatically correct. I was a bit surprised when I copied the original line into Word and it reported no errors.
FAE
FAE
So I grew up in kind of in a fuzzy area.
20:37
@JasonBerkan I am adjusting my worldview to cope with the fact that this is actually accepted.
@LessPop_MoreFizz It's good for a great intellectual argument here and there . . . :)
I will still continue not to use it that way, though.
@OrigamiRobot You are the one who took exception to my usage of it as a polite greeting. Try not to be so touchy.
Yeah, something about positive anymore is just uniquely grating.
@DavidM The only thing I take exception with is your use of general pings instead of proper replies.
20:39
Yeah, it doesn't hit the ear as a highly intelligent usage . . . No offense to whoever used it that way.
FAE
FAE
@MechanicalLoon "Strix has loosened up a little anymore."
@origamirob offend this.
How does one perform a proper reply then? Clearly I'm not aware, and if it is irritating you could take the opportunity to help someone who is new here.
@DavidM On the right side of any message is a little arrow
@FAE twitch
20:40
@david from non mobile chat, click the little arrow on the right hand side of the line of text you're replying to.
@DavidM Hover your mouse over the message you want to reply to and there should be an arrow in the lower-right.
That puts a special reply that links you to the specific message that you're referring to.
On mobile chat, tell @origamirob to shove it.
4
FAE
FAE
@MechanicalLoon It doesn't hit my ear wrong because I grew up hearing it.
How does that appear differently to the person being replied to?
20:41
@LessPop_MoreFizz I'll shove your face!
@DavidM It allows a link to the specific message you're referring to
FAE
FAE
@DavidM Hover over a conversation between people who use replies.
@DavidM It just highlights the message you replied to on mouseover, plus has a link back to the message you replied to on the left.
Alternately, on non-mobile chat, tell @origamirob to shove it. Because reasons.
FAE
FAE
@DavidM They'll all be colored a dark grey to make the conversation/replies easier to follow, and yeah, the links.
20:42
Thanks to all for the help. And, for not being impolite in the process.
@MechanicalLoon When have I ever talked like that.
FAE
FAE
@DavidM I was like, wait a sec, what'd we do wrong?!
@FAE My bad.
Systems have new people. It never helps to be impolite in explaining to new folks.
@ElfSlice I feel like it suits you.
20:43
@david oh, and your mother is a promiscuous, overweight farm animal.
@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh, so you've met her!
@ElfSlice Did you get it?
@LessPop_MoreFizz Oh, good, we have our requisite rudeness.
FAE
FAE
@LessPop_MoreFizz And his father smells of some sort of berry?
Everything is good, carry on!
20:43
@MechanicalLoon Yes.
@FAE Elderberries
I'm going to stop buying games now.
It's pretty decent.
Yeah, I really like it.
@FAE Hamsters are farm animals now?
20:43
Not going to say it's amazing, but it's definitely fun.
I was a little worried about what one of my steam friends said
About the movement feeling restricting and stuff
@OrigamiRobot Very small farms.
FAE
FAE
@DavidM Yes, but the first half wasn't an exact quote, so I didn't want the latter half to be an exact quote either.
but I don't find it so
@ElfSlice I had no issues with movement.
20:44
@OrigamiRobot Guinea pigs are raised as food in South America.
She didn't like how you had to stop and turn around to shoot guys
@LessPop_MoreFizz Again, it's clear you've met her.
@ElfSlice She wanted to just...attack behind her?
@MechanicalLoon i.e. attack while running away
and like you can't move while shooting
FAE
FAE
@ElfSlice Huntress!
20:45
@ElfSlice The kind of thing you can do in a dual-stick shooter but not in a platformer?
I haven't really unlocked any interesting classes in Risk of Rain yet.
I have the left-most 3.
Of which the 3rd one is clearly the least shit.
FAE
FAE
I have 5 currently.
I wish I could get away with putting TF2's version of the Hammer editor on my work PC so I can try making TF2 maps at work.
@MechanicalLoon Eh, yeah I guess. Risk of Rain actually feels more like a dual stick shooter in that it has endless amounts of enemies though
FAE
FAE
Engineer's really fun.
still, I'm digging
20:46
@ElfSlice Only endless if you don't find the teleporter fast enough.
@LessPop_MoreFizz How much snow did you guys get down on the Island?
FAE
FAE
Time for more RuPaul's Drag Race for me! poofs
@DavidM If you're talking about NYC/Long Island, the snow is barely starting here.
It's going to run through the night into Friday.
@MechanicalLoon You missed my point.
Gah, I just read what @FAE said and what @MechanicalLoon said and thought we were somehow talking about TF2 MvM.
20:46
None really yet. We had a dusting overnight and nothing so far today.
Storm doesn't hit until ~6
@MechanicalLoon Yes! Another New Yorker! I'm originally from Port Washington. I'm in exile in Connecticut these days.
@mechanical is in Joisey.
@DavidM I live in New Jersey, but I work in Manhattan.
Oh, neat. Somebody managed to hack the Wii U gamepad to stream content from a PC.
I know exactly enough about the city to get to NY Penn and get to work, and to get home.
20:48
I'm so happy I'm playing a game that is popular in the bridge
@MechanicalLoon Lived in Jersey a thousand years ago. Lived and worked in Manhattan 6 years ago. Now I'm in hell.
I'm gonna ask questions, and answer questions, and have a lot of fun
4
@DavidM I hear Connecticut is super boring.
I only ever stepped foot in it once, at a rest stop.
HAMMERTIME!
@MechanicalLoon Worse than you've heard!
20:48
The rest stop was pretty boring.
@MechanicalLoon They just updated them all
@MechanicalLoon Um, it's a rest stop. Not Disneyland.
> Try playing on Drizzle mode
lol no
Now they're excruciating.
20:49
@MechanicalLoon It is
@JasonBerkan Is Disneyland supposed to be fun?
Where in Jersey are you? I lived in Bergen County around the time that George Washington was marching through there.
@DavidM Monmouth county, but grew up in Middlesex county.
@OrigamiRobot Never been, so I don't know. Given the number of people that go, I can't see that it would be.
That's a commute!
20:50
Yep.
Hour train ride, plus subway.
@MechanicalLoon snicker
@OrigamiRobot I didn't name it.
No, but you said it.
When the woman (my wife) used her evil spell to lure me to CT, I was working in Manhattan and commuting from Stamford.
@DavidM Huge upgrade from my last job, though (which was a 5 minute drive if I hit both lights).
20:52
@MechanicalLoon When I was living in Manhattan I used to walk to work in 3 minutes. I was across the street from the hospital.
@DavidM Stamford doesn't look too far...
(I had to look it up on a map.)
45 min down, 1.5 hours up.
@OrigamiRobot It was pretty fun the last time I went.
Traffic sucks!
Oh you drove into the city. I'm so sorry.
20:53
I start work around 7AM, so train is highly inconvenient.
Oh wait, Disneyland is the one in California, right?
Never mind.
@Yuki It's not as big as the one in Orlando, but I recall it being fun, too.

Q: What does tethering to enemies do?

ElfSliceI found an item with the following attribute: Chance to tether to enemies When I get shooting at people, sometimes I can see this in action. I see a green beam form between myself and the enemy. As far as I can work out though, that's the extent of this feature. Does it do anything usefu...

@DavidM I just don't have as recent an image of Disneyland so I can't be as definitive.
I've not been to that one in probably 25 years myself.
I've been to Orlando a bunch, though.
20:56
"They got the rollercoaster that rollercoasters in the dark! You can't see where the turns are coming from! They got the Finding Nemo ride where you're riding around with Nemo!"
@Yuki What is that quote from?
@DavidM Scrubs.
I'm surprised I didn't get that! I LOVE that show. It's the MOST ACCURATE medical show on TV ever!
Sadly.
"That man went to Disneyland without me!"
LOL
@Yuki Cougar Town is by the same creative team. Not quite as funny, but enjoyable.
21:00
In other news haters of Ben Kuchera will do good to avoid Polygon now.
@Yuki I just started rewatching Scrubs with my wife, who had somehow never seen it before.
@badp Totally didn't see that coming /endsarcasm
@FEichinger Polygon was my fallback place for gaming news, but I don't like it nearly as much as PAR; it's way too spammy.
@badp Meh. I like Polygon because it's such a mixed bunch with lots of people I've been following since way before Polygon.
OMG! I'm such an idiot! I JUST figured out that if you hold down the mouse button in Don't Starve he keeps chopping the trees.
21:02
@badp What, did they hire him or something? I don't even know who Ben Kuchera is and why people would hate him...
@Yuki He did game coverage at Ars Technica and ran Penny Arcade Report.
I get my gaming news from chat, so I don't know all these outlets.
@MechanicalLoon That's half the reason I'm here.
All I know is that Ars Technica is the place where I get IT news.
21:04
@badp That explains a lot about you ... o.ô
@FEichinger ?
Weeeeell, let's just say I don't like Ars, and leave it at that.
@FEichinger You're playing the "let's leave it at that" card again? Boring.
@badp Hey, I'm at a disadvantage here, you have a diamond.
I didn't even know Ars Technica had... reputation
21:05
Aww I was hoping for more drama.
I am disappoint.

Q: What goes on in the mind of an F1 driver?

MDeSchaepmeesterI've purchased a Logitech Driving Force GT a couple of months ago and picked up some racing games during the steam sales. I love racing games and I've become pretty good at it judging by the difficulty of AI I can beat, even without assists. One of the games I bought is CodeMaster's F1 2013. I'm...

@MechanicalLoon Less Scrubs, more MASH
@Lazers ... what a title.
And what a question, after reading it.
Wow, I didn't last very long with the Enforcer
I think that's off-topic ... But it's ... intriguing.
It's also most certainly not "Game Design and Development", dear close voter.
21:08
@ElfSlice Is that the second guy?
I did terrible with him.
Yeah.
Wheeee I got an upvote about a popular game
1
Q: What does tethering to enemies do?

ElfSliceI found an item with the following attribute: Chance to tether to enemies When I get shooting at people, sometimes I can see this in action. I see a green beam form between myself and the enemy. As far as I can work out though, that's the extent of this feature. Does it do anything usefu...

I'm so excited.
@FEichinger Yeah, it seems they're asking about what drivers in real-life do... Which goes somewhere else, I think.
@Yuki It's probably still off-topic ... But again: It's pretty intriguing and I wouldn't know how to phrase the off-topic reason.
this game has awesome music too
It's outside of our expertise - we're not race drivers, and we don't "know" race drivers, so we can't really say how and what they do.
21:12
I say it's okay, just tough to answer.
@FEichinger That would be just generally off-topic - not about gaming. However, he does put in a relevant gaming question: "So how can I improve my learning of a track?"
If it asks how the "real life" pros do it, we can just change it to say how the "videogame" pros do it.
I'd be tempted to get him to reword it and focus on that rather than on real life drivers.
@JasonBerkan I don't like closing with a negative ;) If we can't say what it is about, we can't say that is outside of our topic scope, I believe.
@badp True, but wouldn't an edit like that be (technically) radically changing the meaning of the question?
21:13
@JasonBerkan That might be a good idea, yeh.
Okay I suck with this guy
@ElfSlice Which one? The Enforcer?
Yeah.
It's kind of a Quora-y question right now
He sounded good on paper.
But... I dunno. Not doing very well.
Died twice in the first area with him so far.
Out of 2 tries
21:15
All things take accustoming to!
My first few rounds of Rogue Legacy were awful and I hated the feel of the game. I then proceeded to beat NG+, something I very rarely do.
it helped that there's very little plot or forced progression and that I had a lot of stuff to unlock still while being massively overpowered for the first victory, but...
Dangerously cold air, that West Michigan hasn't seen since February 2007, will sweep in early next week: http://ow.ly/i/4bifR #wmiwx #miwx
Yay, just what I wanted to hear.
It's colder in Minnesota than it is on the surface of Mars today.
20 mph wind is fun at 20 degrees.
I think the best thing about that game is just how predictable controls are. I never have to guess what every button does, it's very much a finite state machine of standing, running, jumping, attacking, dashing, flying and combinations thereof with well defined transitions.
21:21
@Powerlord I walked for an hour this morning at a -40 windchill...
@badp I suck at that game so much.
@badp Responsive, tight controls do wonders for a game.
Floaty games are the worst.
@Powerlord I love how it says "hasn't seen since [6-7 years ago]"....
This guy sucks
Valdis Story and Dust also are kind of scrolling platformer-fighting kinda things, but the controls and combo systems are so mystery meat
21:21
@JasonBerkan Wow. I just got in from a -5 windchill, but that's cold.

@Arperum Er, what?
21:22
like, X and Y perform some kind of attacks, and you can do X Y X Y X to do some special attack, but when you do that then you typically instead trigger the action that you get by holding X
@Arperum Where'd you get it?
and it's no big deal, but it makes you want to mash buttons instead and typically some kind of stuff will happen and things get hit and in the air and I guess that's okay.
@badp Oh, that's gross.
@FEichinger I got that game from a humble bundle gift key from someone I traded Torchlight 2 for it.
That's the trouble I was having with Brutal Legend.
I need to try that out with a controller instead of the keyboard to see if that fixes it.
21:24
@Arperum Ugh, yeh, Humble Bundle steam keys can get ugly.
This is my experience with Dust on a controller.
@FEichinger As if my day wasn't bad enough :(
They even tell you the X Y X Y X combo before giving you the X-hold move, so for a while X Y X Y X works and then... it kinda doesn't?
> We recently deactivated several thousand orders that were found to be purchased fraudulently from Humble Bundle. Any games that had been redeemed on Steam that came from one of these fraudulent orders have been revoked and will disappear from the user's Steam library.
Great, Humblebundle mentions this in their FAQ, looks like I won't get my game back.
21:27
@OrigamiRobot huh, the only italian city that gets recognized by the site is the very small one I happen to live in. Rome, Milan, etc. all fail.
@Arperum There's not much you can do about it either, I'm afraid :/
@FEichinger Nope, except have a terrible day turn even worse. Oh well.
@badp Probably because there's a town/city in Texas somewhere with the same name.
@Arperum was it a gift?
@Yuki Actually no. I got "Xxxxx, Italy" at the top.
@badp Yup.
21:28
Name a fairly well-known city and there's a Texas town with the same name, I bet you.
Well, "gift", as in it was a gift key, and I traded a torchlight 2 for it in steam.
Despite there being Venice, Texas it still can't find that shit.
@LessPop_MoreFizz WANT
@ORIGAMIROB SO EXCITED.

@ElfSlice I would venture a guess as to say a monster killed you.
GOD DAMMIT STEAM.
21:36
@FEichinger How much did they force you to spend this time?
Yay! I just reached level 10 on Steam! :D
@MechanicalLoon Nothing yet, but they just gave me a 50% off coupon for a game I happen to want ...
But I'm kinda dry this month ... This sucks.
And now I'm preparing for another ~10 hours of reinstalling my OS ...
Because I sure as hell ain't keeping Windows 8 blocking the entire hard drive space.
> Survive a boss with less then 20% health
ಠ_ಠ
@FEichinger 10 hours installing a OS? That seems a little far fetched unless you're talking about re-installing everything too.
@ErraticFox I'm running a dual-boot Ubuntu GNOME/Windows. Setting up partitions, installing the two in the proper order, making my way around various BIOS settings and reinstalling drivers, yeh, that takes quite long.
21:44
Not if you're on the ball about it.
@FEichinger Which game, and how much?
Who in here liked Smooth McGroove? I forget.

Q: Beagleboard SNES with non-Tomee controller?

Aidan EdwardsAnyone here know anything about using non-Tomee controllers with BeagleSNES? The guide says there is only official support for Tomee, I was wondering if there was any unofficial.

Smooth McGroove has a new album out. VGM Acapella Volume 4.
His bandcamp colour scheme is still ugly as sin, but the new album art I actually really like.
