Current Status (version 053)

Completed: 100% of the main Morrowind game has been completed, and is fairly well debugged (details here). There is very little that gets in the way of a complete Morrowind experience.
In Progress: Bloodmoon and Tribunal debugging (volunteer here). Mostly playable, but you will encounter bugs.
Long Term: Porting Morroblivion to the Skyrim engine (discussion here). If you know how to write C++ please help us with the converter!

I'll never get into Dwarf Fortress for that reason.

You must own and install Oblivion, including the Shivering Isles expansion.

@StrixVaria The impending doom can be a difficult hurdle, but I find it to be well worth it. Like @FAE said, it's very exploration-based. Even the end goal of finding Adventure Mode requires exploration. That's really the only direction you're given is "survive and explore." And then the game makes it difficult to do that. =P
