goddammit
Why is it that stuff like "Link doesn't speak." is always the most highly voted

@Unionhawk Because you don't need much experience with the games to be interested in the question and the answer.

I guess

It's the same reason that good game identification questions are highly voted

cc @AshleyNunn

It's just amazing how with one exception and one exception only, the rep I've gotten from an answer is inversely proportional to the amount of time it took me to write it

I think it is only fitting that the 40000th star is a @Wipqozn removal
Oh wait
Actually that's not entirely true
I guess it's just that both takes forever and tends to have exactly 1 user interested.

6:06 PM
@Unionhawk I think that's a dumb joke

@OrigamiRobot Yeah
It's a better joke than "something star worthy" being 40000th star

And also run into the ground, but that's SOP for The Bridge.

Yep
Why stop at running a joke into the ground?

Q: Is There a Tally of the Number of 12 Win Arena Players?

Jonathan MeeIt seems the players who make it to Legendary each month is pretty public. What about the players who make it to 12 wins in the arena? Is there a list somewhere? I've heard that arena is getting more difficult with the increase in randomness from Goblins Versus Gnomes.

Does anyone know where I can find our meta discussion about banning developer intent questions? I'd rather not rehash the entire argument on BCG

Q: Why didn't whomever created EDH allow Planeswalkers to be Commanders?

JayjayI've been wondering this for awhile because it makes no sense to me. Yes I know the only legendary creatures unless stated otherwise thing but really planeswalkers are in their own way legendary creature. They're quite rare unless you buy them outright or trade and I've personally never found one...

Hang on, I'm going oldest to newest in right now

Q: "Why did They design it that way, anyway?", and why do we allow or disallow these?

Grace NoteWe get an unusually large number of questions along this line. This question comes up because of this recent closure. I'm bringing it up because our handling of this is... inconsistent. This question is roughly identical in nature to the above, except it's not downvoted at all (possibly due to b...

thank you based GraceNote

@Unionhawk Yeah, I just found that one too

@murgatroid99 Ugh, I want to VTC but POB feels so wrong

POB doesn't seem right, yeah

6:19 PM
I feel like the argument on the last comment on that question is one I've seen before almost verbatim, but I can't find it on Grace Note's question

@murgatroid99 Don't forget the whole, "expertise vs. new sites" angle. It's refined the argument slightly.

@murgatroid99 I've definitely seen that argument in chat before

That's a dumb argument.

Q: Why no animals?

SteamPandaIn my Minecraft private survival game I've built my house in a small valley, and I'm surviving on a small wheat and watermelon farm. This is because there are no animals. There are other mobs like Creepers, but not a single pig, cow, or chicken in sight. Help please? (;.;)

@murgatroid99, Re "We have no way of knowing the mental state or decision making process of whoever made that decision". That's not true at all. There could have been a press release, an interview or a forum post, or maybe someone here is EDH's creator's best friend and can ask him. You don't need ESP to determine what was someone's intent. — ikegami 13 mins ago
That one?

6:23 PM
@Frank yeah, that argument comes up all the time with developer intent questions

@Frank yes

> maybe someone here is EDH's creator's best friend and can ask him. \
I wouldn't even know how to respond to that.

I don't know how to explain to him that "It might be possible to obtain an answer, but probably isn't" isn't good enough

@Wipqozn And my response for us is always: "If it requires a developer to have talked about it in order to answer, then it doesn't play to our expertise. We're no longer doing anything but repeating what a developer has said."

Because the ability to answer this question isn't about "expertise" so much as "they gave us a reason (this time)"

6:26 PM
Door

It's a question about the decisions of the EDH RC, not about EDH itself.

@OrigamiRobot Unfortunately, I don't think BCG has given as much thought to "expertise" and how it affects on-topicness as we have

The entire class of questions is problematic as
1) It requires the developer to have talked about it to answer.
2) It doesn't actually require the core expertise to answer.
3) The question will garner rumor and speculation as answers, especially in the case of these questions the developer HASN'T answered.
Mostly #2, for me.

@GnomeSlice ?

@GnomeSlice OPEN DOOR

6:29 PM
Incidentally, the other questions being used to defend that one would also get closed here, I think.

@Frank also, such answers can only be confirmed by a dev or a quote from dev on a reputable site

@Chippies That, too. But that's part of #2.

so even if you were a friend of the dev, you can't confirm it

At least for questions about card banning, you can talk about powerful card interactions. Those can basically be reworded to "What makes X so powerful?"

Finding motivations of design choices has no capacity for independent verification.

6:32 PM
@Frank I think that's part of the problem. It's harder to argue with precedent

@murgatroid99 Which is why pointing out the problematic nature of those questions on Meta might get you the support you need for closing those questions.
As for that particular one, that's a common argument here. And it's always, "Whether they've talked about it or not is irrelevant. These questions don't leverage the core expertise."

@Frank I could. And I probably will when I have more time. But I suspect it will just end with "those questions are highly voted, there is no problem here"

Hahahahahaha this is how the bandcamp app copies an album link to clipboard for you;

@murgatroid99 Which is actually a bigger problem. The community doesn't properly understand their nature. Perhaps giving a few scenarios, and pointing out what expertise is not in play might help?

Lol it adds the OMG part

Q: Minecraft Inventory Saving

thezi3I am making an RPG map, and was wondering how to "save" the game. @Lazers This is kind of a gamedev question...

There's definitely no way to do it in v... wait... Maybe?

6:47 PM
But other command block questions are allowed.
I don't like Minecraft.

The part about him making a map could be taken out and the question would be unchanged

@StrixVaria Command blocks have created this really, really weird grey area of things

@GnomeSlice It's still asking "how do I program this thing in this esoteric language?"
So the unchanged part is still a gamedev question.

Shrug, if its a game about programming it's still a game
I guess?
Also I love it when somebody uses 'esoteric' in a sentence

I think it's worth discussing

6:49 PM
@GnomeSlice Esoteric Order of Dagon

Pls no
Who is Dagon

GIS it

You use that in town of salem

I wouldn't be opposed to migration (after discussion with people), but at the same time there's a difference between commands used in a mapmaking setting and commands used in general.

@Unionhawk Yeah, it's just weird.

6:50 PM
Yes
As it is, I don't think there's a way to do it in vanilla

This is funny
It automatically adds that

If there was a way to copy some entity data, like, copy a player's inventory to a chest, it could be done. But there is not.
And handling multiple players would get weird fast.

Pretty sure that's lord woo fak fak
@orig

@Wipqozn the app does it, not the website

Yeah

It's the whole "android copy url" thing adds extra text thing

Like dagon

Plan for when I get home: Pizza, Evolve, Your mom, Burn.
I wonder if @Yuuki is still planning to buy Evolve.

6:54 PM
iOS too apparently @uni

@Wipqozn How far are you in WoR?

Dagon is a Great Old One, like Cthulhu

@StrixVaria I feel it'd be off-topic at GameDev.SE, which I realize doesn't mean, in and of itself, that it should stay open here.

@StrixVaria It's possible I haven't read it since the last time we talked since I've been too busy playing MH4U

Is evolve fun. I was in the closed beta but never played it

6:55 PM
@Wipqozn :|

@GnomeSlice I'm enjoying it.
@StrixVaria I'm so sorry

I watched @Wipqozn play Evolve and it seemed fun.

I need to try duelyst
I got into closed... Alpha? For that

The biggest problem with Evolve is the pricetag.

@OrigamiRobot honestly, you said Dagon and my mind jumped to Elder Scrolls

6:55 PM
@MBraedley Yeah, I don't spend time there so I don't know their rules. These questions are kind of bleh here, not entirely off topic but not really playing into our expertise either.

Given that they plan to have a DLC heavy model, then the core game really should be cheaper.

Duelyst probably means hartacon tactics will never get made though ;(

@GnomeSlice I think it's beta, isn't it?
Either way, let me know how it is. Looks fun.

Not sure

@StrixVaria It's a bunch of command block programming, which we've been mostly accepting of.

6:57 PM
Is @sterno a Great Old One too?

@MBraedley Yeah, I'm not too upset about it. Just wanted to bring it up in case anyone felt strongly.

@Wipqozn I don't think the pricetag of the game is too bad. The price of all the DLC, which is effectively required, is the problem.

He's certainly an old one, but I'm not sure about his capitalization status.

@sternthulhu

@StrixVaria Not a huge fan, but generally, they're a pretty good area of expertise.

6:58 PM
@Wipqozn have I shown you a game called Hartacon Tactics? Or Gravia Tactics? Both look pretty interesting

@GnomeSlice I do not believe so.

Duelyst definitely has more money behind it than either of those
And a bigger team I think

@MBraedley Yeah, I basically agree. The DLC is way too expensive. The way I look at it is that if you're making a DLC heavy game, then your base game should be priced lower.
It just makes good business sense. Lower price point = lower barrier of entry = more player

I had that problem with dungeon defenders

Q: Why doesn't a PS3 hitachi hard drive fit into one which originally had a toshiba?

83457I swapped PS3s, and one of them had a toshiba hard drive. This could easily go into both of the PS3s. However, the original one was a hitachi, and couldn't go into the one which had the toshiba. The worst part about being mod is that my name can never be slanty, even if I'm owner. Why do blue things and slanty things have to be mutually exclusive?

7:06 PM
@Frank I haven't read the entire question, but it doesn't look like he wants to write a bukkit plugin or some mod, but just do it in stock Minecraft. The Minecraft questions over at GameDev (when they're actually about Minecraft and not just tangential) are mostly about plugins and mods.

Somebody star for me

@MBraedley I'm not arguing that they're off-topic at all.

Toon link gif is amazing
Wait I can do it

I'm saying that command block questions are generally accepted here, even if they are programming.

@Frank Maybe I just confused the "they're" in that post.

@MBraedley Yeah, that's why I clarified.

~30 degree swings :(

7:17 PM
All right, I give up. Someone with more eloquence and more bcg rep tell them all about why "why did they design it this way" is bad

heh, we got the first spring weekend predicted. So warmer temps. IIRC like 10-14C

Wunderground is a satire fakenews site about the EDM scene, why are you looking up the weather there

@OrigamiRobot A week ago we had a 30C temperature swing.

I don't believe you.

@JasonBerkan Ugh, that sounds horrible.
You need to move to a better climate.

7:20 PM
@OrigamiRobot It was over 36 hours, though. -33C Sunday morning to 0C Monday afternoon.

@GnomeSlice I'm not, I'm looking at thefuckingweather.com
@JasonBerkan Cheater!

Then by Tuesday night, it was -28C again.

You need to move to a better climate.

@OrigamiRobot Nainamo, here I come!

the temperature swings look bigger with Fahrenheit than it does with Celsius

Yes
30C is 80F
Though... Wait, that's not entirely correct

@Unionhawk Ridiculous

Q: How do I target players in a non-radial manner?

GigazelleI own a server, and have built a large indoor structure at spawn. I would like new players to spawn inside this structure. Upon research, Minecraft automatically spawns all players at the highest available y position, meaning players will spawn on my roof instead of inside. I've tested this mysel...

A difference of 30C is a difference a about... Like 50F
dT = 30C - 0C = 80F - 32F

@Unionhawk depends on the temperature

You could just multiply it by 9/5

7:33 PM
-40C = -40F

@Powerlord shh

the higher it goes, the bigger the difference

There are 9 degrees Fahrenheit for every 5 degrees Celcius.

@Powerlord that's not always true, I'm pretty sure

@Chippies yes it is

7:34 PM
@Chippies It's a linear relationship

> °C x 9/5 + 32 = °F

(°F - 32) x 5/9 = °C

Degrees F = 9/5 * Degrees C + 32

@Chippies Exactly

@murgatroid99 well, you didn't mention the +/-32

It's still linear

7:35 PM
@Chippies That's because 32F = 0C

@Chippies I didn't mention any numbers

y = mx + b <-- standard formula for a linear relationship.

Oh well, switch to celsius already, America!

@Powerlord pretty sure standard form is Ax+By=C

@murgatroid99 it's linear, but the difference grows

7:36 PM
@Chippies And that still means that a difference of X degrees Celcius is a difference of 9/5 X degrees Fahrenheit

@murgatroid99 well, that, yes

@Chippies that's what we were talking about

I was originally commenting on this:
5 mins ago, by Unionhawk
A difference of 30C is a difference a about... Like 50F

C = ((F+40)/1.8)-40
F = ((C+40)*1.8)-40

@Chippies yes

7:37 PM
These are the equations I use.

@Unionhawk Well, one is the general form and the other the slope intercept form if you want to get technical.

It plays off them crossing at -40 degrees, and I find it easier to remember.

@StrixVaria I used to use those, but then I got over it.

I usually use x C to F or x F to C in google

@Chippies Obviously, that was an estimate. It's actually 54F

7:38 PM
@murgatroid99 I thought about it and I realized I was thinking of it differently, I think
I don't even know what I was thinking anymore

@Chippies you were probably thinking of the difference between the C and F representations of a given absolute temperature, instead of the C and F representations of differences between temperatures

Delta temperature is strictly the 9/5 relationship because the 32 component washes out in subtraction

@murgatroid99 probably, that would make some sense

@MBraedley I heard about this.

7:49 PM
This question is on topic. Just because you don't know how to do the math, doesn't mean I don't.... :) — John Feb 26 at 20:26

@Powerlord I, unfortunately, don't have any of the old bills.

Actual on-topicness aside, that's not how you determine on-topicness...

In my experience, board gamers are the absolute worst at understanding how statistics works.

@JasonBerkan You misspelled "gamblers"

@OrigamiRobot I think it's more in response to this

7:52 PM
@Powerlord Yes, sorry. Gamblers are worse then board gamers. I just haven't had many statistical arguments with gamblers. Other than "why are you buying more than one lottery ticket?"

@JasonBerkan Well, statistically speaking, if those tickets aren't identical numbers, buying two tickets DOES double their odds of winning.
From 1 in 102i10i349u5348u5u3453489u5 to 2 in102i10i349u5348u5u3453489u5, but still...

@JasonBerkan That way if someone else got the same number as me I still get the majority of the winnings.

@Powerlord But still indeed.

Whoops, I just noticed I hit some letters in my "randomly hit the keyboard to generate plausible numbers" thing.

@StrixVaria Oh. If you are playing the same numbers more than once, that is a bit different.
Personally, if I was going to buy lottery tickets, I'd probably try to figure out the least picked numbers and go with those, for the same reason. If lightning strikes, you want all of it.

7:56 PM
Whenever someone says "lottery ticket" I automatically assume they mean scratch tickets for some reason.

There comes a point, when the pot is big enough, that on average you win more than you lose if you buy a ticket.
I'm way too lazy to think about that and the odds are still so bad that I don't ever play the lottery.

@StrixVaria I thought the total pot was always less than the sum of the costs of all the tickets
Otherwise, whoever is running the lottery never makes any money

@murgatroid99 In some, there's the possibility of no winner, so the pot carries over to the next time.

@StrixVaria I thought the tickets carried over too

If there's no winner a bunch of times in a row, then the pot for this one can be big enough to make it worthwhile to play this time only.
@murgatroid99 I don't think so.
I might be wrong, though, in which case there isn't a point where you ever win and the lottery is dumb.
Actually maybe it still makes sense to buy a ticket if the pot gets big enough, even if the tickets do carry over.
I'm too lazy to actually think too hard about this, though.

7:59 PM
MtG is a more fun lottery than the real lottery.

The problem with dealing with expected values, though, is that even if it's in your favor, you still expect to lose over your lifetime

@StrixVaria You'll earn more money working for the same amount of time you spend thinking about it.

@OrigamiRobot I have 7 plains, does that mean I win? It's like a super-flush.
@murgatroid99 Usually!

@StrixVaria No, I mean in a probability theory/Markov model sense

8:00 PM
@JasonBerkan Thinking like this makes me do a lot of weird things.

@murgatroid99 Sorin Markov?

You can calculate how much money you'll probably have after X time, and it's going to be negative

@murgatroid99 I know; the amount of time it takes on average to get the win means you'll die before you win. But there's some draw to the lottery that makes people keep playing it.

@StrixVaria The hope that they'll beat the odds and become obscenely rich.

@StrixVaria Spoiler alert: it's the money

8:02 PM
I've heard the lottery described as a "poor tax".

@StrixVaria The draw is that probability doesn't match intuition

cc: the ones talking right now

People think "there's a chance," even though there really isn't

The best is when people win like $500 on a $1 scratch off and use that as justification for buying tickets for the rest of their life

8:02 PM
@murgatroid99 There really is, but they don't comprehend how very, very tiny it is.

If you buy one ticket and it doesn't win, you think maybe the next one will win. Eventually you have bought a lot of tickets and you feel like if you quit now, all of the tickets you've bought were just a waste of time and money
(which it is, but...)

Just double down every time you lose at Roulette and you are guaranteed to win!

@StrixVaria "My chance is as good as anyone else's"

@StrixVaria assuming you don't run out of money first?
in which case, you probably don't need to win at roulette to begin with

@Chippies There are also max bets at casinos for exactly this reason, but yes that could be a problem.

8:07 PM
The problem is that gambling is basically a weighted random walk, and if you have to stop when you run out of money, the bank always wins at that in the long run

@StrixVaria Max bets, as well as the black slot which is an auto-lose, which moves the odds into the house's favour.

I'm pretty sure that even if you're doing an unweighted random walk (your expected winnings over time are 0), the bank still wins if you stop when you hit 0

Q: Can I fully upgrade all weapons?

imulsionBy which I mean are there enough weapon parts in Panau to upgrade all black market weapons to level 6 (assuming vanilla game)?

@StrixVaria I've heard it described as a tax on the stupid

I'm going to buy a ticket on the way home and if I win, my one data point will negate this whole discussion.

8:14 PM
@SaintWacko The problem is that poor people often also have less education, on top of their greater incentive to play the lottery

@OrigamiRobot I ate today, so world hunger is solved.

Last week we were discussing my Dad not having electricity as a kid - my kids didn't have Internet this morning, and they freaked out a little. Times have changed.

@StrixVaria I felt cold this morning, so global warming doesn't exist

@murgatroid99 Senator Inhofe brought a snowball to a senate meeting to prove that global warming doesn't exist.
