It doesn't make sense to say that hardware malfunctions are bugs. Otherwise we would just say that all programs have all possible bugs because a hardware malfunction could flip some arbitrary set of bits in memory after any instruction.

@Yuuki Randomly eats coins is a design requirement? Okay. Then I guess it's not a malfunction.

And that's not a useful definition

Q: Minecraft - How do you give a villager custom trading?

lilbud516Minecraft - How do you give a villager stuff to trade with in vanilla?

@murgatroid99 Including hardware is required, though. It has to, because that's what code runs on.

@Frank If all programs inherently have all bugs because cosmic rays can make them do something else, then there's no use in talking about "bugs" any more
You wouldn't be able to say that one program is buggier than another, or try to fix a bug, or report bugs, or anything

10:03 PM
@murgatroid99 It has less to do with, "forces outside our control", and more, "Our program did something that was unexpected."

@Frank Should we also consider tsunamis as bugs? Because that's reality, which is what machines run on.
In?

@Yuuki I now want to see a running machine on a tsunami.

@Frank The program is doing what it's supposed to do. The program doesn't know that the pushbutton has stopped working.

@OrigamiRobot And how is the user supposed to know that? They're not going to be able to isolate whether the problem is in the hardware or the program. All they know is that it's not working.

public void SomeFunction(userinput){
shoot user
SomeFunction(userInput);
}

10:08 PM
@Frank Now you're moving the goalposts. Now it's not about whether the program is buggy, but whether the actual machine running the program is doing what it's supposed to. And that's not the same thing

Double tap is small change when recursion is a thing

@Frank Whether or not they know where the error is, the error only exists in one place.
And that place is not the program.

@murgatroid99 I will concede that code can be bug free, up to a point.
I honestly did not think such existed in the world.

@Frank Then I think I've lost track of what the point of this discussion is.

@murgatroid99 Fake Internet points.

10:10 PM
@murgatroid99 I'm conceding the point.

@Yuuki I think I got the only fake internet points in this conversation

@murgatroid99 Hackability
@murgatroid99 D:

@OrigamiRobot That was what started it, yes.

Q: My Ps3 wont connect to the T.V. or the controller

Kevin yangSo yesterday night my Ps3 was working and now the next day my Ps3 wont connect with the controller or the HDMI But it turns on. When I turn it on, I have to hold the power button just for it to turn off. Also yesterday while my mom was watching Netflix on my Ps3 my little brother came and tugged ...

@OrigamiRobot And unless you can tamper with the hardware, hardware issues shouldn't be a security/hackability issue

10:11 PM
THEN WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH THIS VENDING MACHINE CODE I WAS WRITING?

And everyone knows that if you do have hardware access, you win

@murgatroid99 That one's a guarantee, yes.
And I just don't see how anything connected to the internet can be 100% secure; the infrastructure and underlying protocols make it impossible.

And there we have the assumption fault.

We'd have to rebuild the entire internet to make that go away.

@Frank Many of the underlying protocols are simple, and while they do have bugs, they don't have bugs that can manifest as critical security vulnerabilities
There are a lot of ways for programs to be buggy that don't open the door for hackers

10:14 PM
@murgatroid99 Right, so finite state machines can easily be bug free.

Did you guys honestly spend an hour talking about whether or not hack-proof software can be written? I wasn't even trying to troll you!

The only code related bug I can think of in a simple vending machine program is the user puts in too much money.

@OrigamiRobot then you add a change-making state

@Sterno Congratulations. You trolled the bridge.

Honestly the best bridge trolling is the bridge trolling you didn't mean to do.

10:17 PM
@murgatroid99 Right, just start dispensing change the moment you put in more than the maximum you could possibly need.

Too much money is just an offering to the vending machine gods

@OrigamiRobot or have "state" contain data like the amount of money they put in (which you'll need anyway)

@murgatroid99 But if you only did that, it could theoretically overflow.

@OrigamiRobot Use a 64 bit integer. A human doesn't have the lifespan to put that much money in
More importantly, the vending machine doesn't have enough lifespan

Hey, we're talking theoretical here :P

10:19 PM
If they put in more than a billion dollars, ignore the rest

@murgatroid99 I'd just go with, "If I'm already storing more than the cost of the most expensive item, just spit it back out."

^ That

If someone ever complains that they converted their life savings to dollar bills, then spent months putting it into a single vending machine, and the vending machine stopped accepting them eventually, just refund them

But of course you technically can make the same vending machine with zero code whatsoever.

Or calculate the net worth of everyone on the planet, multiply that by 1000, and make that your upper bound. You still have room left over in your 64 bit int

10:25 PM
@Frank As a random note, I'm putting a frighteningly unnecessary amount of effort into making some use out of all these extra gil buns I harvested.

@Sterno You're just so skill at causing drama you don't even need to try.

@Yuuki I made so much stuff for levelling my tailoring.

@Frank I harvest 33 gil buns while trying to get 10 HQ ones for my Grand Company turn-in.
I'm currently crafting all the rest of the ingredients for chicken and mushrooms.
And I'm doing my level best to make them all HQ.

Q: Detection song in the mission "Deja Vu" from Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes?

user67153I'm curious (as I love the song) what is the song that plays when you get detected by an enemy on the mission "Deja Vu" in Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes? I couldn't find it anywhere. Thanks!

Q: How can I resume talking to the wraith in Old Crestwood?

Trent HawkinsSo I drained the lake and started exploring the ruins of Old Crestwood, when I found an exclamation mark on my compass: A wraith wanted to talk to me, presumably with a quest of some kind! Unfortunately, in the middle of our conversation we were interrupted by a wandering rage demon. After that ...

Aww, I forgot to paste this when we were talking about how many lines of code it took to make a program complex enough
The sorites paradox (/soʊˈraɪtiːz/; sometimes translated as the paradox of the heap because in Ancient Greek: σωρίτης sōritēs means "heap") is a paradox that arises from vague predicates. A typical formulation involves a heap of sand, from which grains are individually removed. Under the assumption that removing a single grain does not turn a heap into a non-heap, the paradox is to consider what happens when the process is repeated enough times: is a single remaining grain still a heap? (Or are even no grains at all a heap?) If not, when did it change from a heap to a non-heap? == The original... ==

10:27 PM
Just made 30 pinches of HQ Table Salt.
And I'm almost done with 30 sticks of HQ Smooth Butter.

@Yuuki I see you found the Wipqozn way to make money.
Making HQ version of essential mats is a great way to make money.
Steam is recommending games to me based on my playtime in Bad Rats.
It's two suggestions are Surgeon Simulator 2013 and World of Goo.

@Wipqozn Now the world will know what you did.

Ben
@Wipqozn ever played world of goo?

@Ben Yes

Ben
I liked it.

10:34 PM
@OrigamiRobot I feel like steam is just taunting me.

T-Rex is @Wipqozn

@OrigamiRobot That is exactly what I thought of. I won't even lie.
That and their premise that "a heap minus one grain is still a heap" is just wrong.

@Wipqozn I prefer the solution that premise 1 is wrong and heaps do not exist.

One object can still be a heap.

@OrigamiRobot You would, silly robot.

I'm not sure if I should play Dungeonmans, Elite, Xenonauts, or read Elantris.

@Wipqozn If a heap minus one grain of sand is still a heap, nothing is a heap too.

@Arperum Makes sense. Empty heap is still heap.

Depends on your definition of heap.

heap heap heap heap heap heap heap

10:41 PM
If you're using the formal CS definition of a heap, then yes, an empty heap is a heap since a heap is a type of data structure not a unit of measurment.

@Yuuki heap is semantically satiated. Why is it happening so fast lately?

The paradox, however, refers to the heap being used as an informal form of "measurement".

@Wipqozn It's a goddamn bad unit of measurement.

heap heap heap heap heap heap heap

Just like people will say "That's a lot of stuff"

10:42 PM
@Yuuki KJGDFYf?

@Arperum You spelled heap wrong

@Arperum For doing actual measurments, yeah. Why I used " " later.

TIME TO TRAVEL THROUGH TIME TO PLAY VIDEOS GAMES

It's a good way to give an idea of how large something is in informal speech.

I will be traveling forward at normal speed.

10:43 PM
Why are we still discussing this? We are agreeing the whole time.

If we didn't have words/phrases like "heap" or "a lot" then we'd have no way to convey the size of something without giving a precise measurment, which would be silly.

Someone reboot @Wipqozn

@arperum It depends on your definition of "discussion"

We could also just say "more than X", but meeeeeeeh
NO I REFUSE
REBOOTING IS FOR LAMEBOS

10:45 PM
@Arperum bECAUSE CAPS LOCK
Also because discussing things for no reason is what The Bridge is all about.

Things I did today: Less than what I should have.

@OrigamiRobot You crazy kids.

@RedRiderX EVEN IF CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL, YOU STILL NEED TO STEER.

@Arperum pretend I just flipped a reply arrow from my above message to this one

I blame @Unionhawk

10:45 PM
Probably accurate

@Unionhawk Yay! Infinite loop!

@OrigamiRobot I blame everyone but @Unionhawk!
WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!!?

Probably also accurate

I'm not sure if I should play Dungeonmans, Elite, Xenonauts, or read Elantris.

@Wipqozn True, but I'm going to go back to playing games with the added disadvantage of moving along with the drum of a death metal song.

10:47 PM
I might just default to Elantris.

What am I being blamed for?
Or not blamed for?

@Unionhawk I'm not really sure.
However, speaking as one who is often blamed, you should get used to not knowing what you're being blamed for.

True, very true
Oh snap, I'll need to flip this avatar in a few days

@Arperum And yet it never got any stars.
So sad.

@Yuuki I can't pin it to retroactively star it :(

10:50 PM
@Arperum you can retroactively star it still
In transcript, left arrow, star

@Unionhawk You should probably change it now.

@Wipqozn the Christmas season isn't over until Wednesday

@Unionhawk That doesn't push it into the starlist though.

@Arperum yeah oh well

I suggest thsat.

10:53 PM
Tuesday, I lied
So change will go live on Wednesday

Q: Poor Titanfall GPU performance

user2486570I have Intel i5 2500k, Nvidia GeForce GTX 560, 16 GB of DDR3 RAM. Still, Titanfall has really poor performance. I play on lowest possible settings and in HD (1280x720, I think). Still, on large maps, the game drops to ca. 5FPS, making it almost unplayable. Interesting thing is, that while playi...

Q: Should I close as unclear or duplicate?

BenI saw this question this morning, and while the question wasn't very specific, I still kinda saw what the OP (might) have been getting at, and I had seen a similar question before. Q: What happened to the hats?

Ben'Twas the season, but 'tis no more... Cool, no worries, I had fun while it lasted, now it's time to get back to work. But I just think it ended a bit too abruptly. Was this part of the plan?

@sepialazers they went poof. It's amazing how virtual hats don't stick around

Why wait to see what @Unionhawk's next avatar will be when I can ART it myself?

Q: How do I save a screenshot in Ingress on iPhone without uploading it anywhere?

simbabqueSince a couple of month Ingress has this share button on certain screens (most useful one is probably the player profile). Q: Can an Xbox360 be plugged into an Xbox One?

Brok3nThe Xbox One has a HDMI port for television, so plugging an Xbox 360 into it should work. Is this possible?
