@AshleyNunn it does, but I think even that is kind of a glib dismissal in some ways; which isn't to say that there aren't very troubling things in a lot of rap music! But I find that, as the article very saliently points out in it's introduction, rap tends to take a much harder rap for it's use of those tropes.

@LessPop_MoreFizz It comes down to exposure, I think. Since the entirety of my exposure to rap was featuring tropes that make me uncomfortable (because my exposure rate was very low), I went by what I knew, and since the sound + the words weren't appealing so much, I didn't investigate further. In this case, I appreciate it more than I did, but I still am not necessarily going to seek it out or anything in any sort of serious way, because there are other genres I feel are, to me, more aurally pleasing.

There is a reason why I specifically refer to "everything but rap and country" as a cliche - because it is one, and the fact is that the only thing those two musical cultures really have in common is that they are music which is centered around narratives which are often about poor people who aren't from the suburbs - so as a statement, it sounds very much like "I don't like things which come from outside of my cultural experience."

It's not the 'but rap and country' that's the problem, per se, it's the presumption of 'everything' else being acceptable.

Is that a bit more articulate than I was the last time around I hope?

Neverwinter nights 2 is on there. I've never played it myself, but I think @LessPop_MoreFizz loves it. Similar to Torment I believe.

You could always check out /r/shouldibuythisgame as well. I find them to be a really helpful resource for game suggestions.

From much of the same team, I heard "Arcanum" is rather good ... though not to everyone's taste.

If it wasn't for the "no player reflexes required", I'd also recommend The Witcher (2 is better than 1, but 1 is still good) and System Shock 2 as well.

System Shock 2 is fantastic. I can't recommend it high enough...but I don't think it's what you're looking for.

@Jolenealaska Dragon Age Origins allows you to pause during combat so you can issue orders to your party.

I don't think there are many RPGs as story-heavy as Torment.

Fallout is very good, there is quite a bit of combat, but no reflexes at all required

IIRC, Shadowrun Returns comes with a mission editor. You can write your own stories. And give them out to friends.

I personally like Baldur's Gate 2 much better than the first part (I never played it to the end). It's of course still a lot of combat, but also a lot of story in there.

I don't really remember any puzzle-heavy RPGs, but there are a lot of very good old-school adventure games

Yeah, aside of at least half of the potential party members being annoying enough that I love to just send them naked into the next monster fight and leave their cold corpse on the side of the road, never to look back again, BG2 > BG1.

Puzzles may not be the right word. Dialog options actually effect what happens next, and the best choice isn't always clear.

Just now in Baldurs Gate I picked up a new player. I thought it might be fun to play with with this fighter/cleric dwarf. There was no way to be sure to save the players I had been playing with up to that point. I may have just drowned them.

That bites.

I loved the variety of the characters too (in Torment) Nordom was sooo cool! I loved him.

Dragon age has choices which matter. Your race and class will influence how people interact with you as well. Your party members all have "meters" which represent how they feel about you as well, based on actions you've taken. One member might likew you more for talkinbg your way out of encounters and another might tgink you a coward.

You're touching on something there that's important to my enjoyment of a game. I want to feel something for the characters I play with. Nordom in Torment is an example of that. I played the end-game over and over again because I could not accept that Nordom dies. It was worth it, everybody lived :)

Except my Lim-Lim - that pissed me off.

Quite the opposite of how I play RPGs nowadays. I like a simple rule: Somebody dies, they stay dead, unless it was clearly due to a bug. I just have no patience nor the time to savescum.

This is what pissed me off about Dragon Age: You can't kill off your companions even if you try (much less by accident) unless you metagame to hell and back and look up how to do it beforehand.

My favourite BG1 chars are Viconia, Minsc and Edwin, in that order. Most of the other are pretty forgettable, but at least they're not actively annoying (die, Aerie, die).

The interesting part is that acting purely in your best interest tends to land you in the "slightly good" to "holy" spectrum in most games. It's as if story writers would consider evil to necessarily be a combination of stupid and self-destructive.
