12:00 AM
I answered I don't know on 2 questions, and I'm assuming it's 10 points per question

I was really proud of myself for knowing the last one so quickly

@Chippies #12?

@GnomeSlice #12 what?

Did you get that one

I think so, I couldn't figure out I think it was 17 and 19
or maybe 18 and 19

12:01 AM
Nvm I just figured it out

I don't remember which one was which now.

that one
I got it though

I refreshed page and I'm answering I don't know to everything to find 12, lol

Also the one with the two diagonal lines of numbers. I skipped that one.

ah, that was fairly easy

12:02 AM
@Chippies quiet, you

@OrigamiRobot that's the second I skipped
last one was suprisingly easy coming from the previous 3

#12 is pretty easy
@Chippies I know I skipped more than 2

@OrigamiRobot I'm sure if you put more time into it you wouldn't have to skip

Yea, I skipped 15 as well

Anyone want to give some constructive criticism for my writing?

12:04 AM
And I guessed on the paper squares one
@RedRiderX I'll do it

@OrigamiRobot 15 took me a while, but I managed to figure it out

fuck my life

I admit though, I was using calculator

12:05 AM
@Chippies Cheats!

@GnomeSlice 14 was weird, when I answered it I was only like 95% sure it was the right answer, lol

user15026
@redriderx no need for a comma in your last sentence. Other than that it was good

I'm pretty sure I got it

@AshleyNunn Hmm okay
Also thanks

user15026
No problem. :)

12:07 AM
@OrigamiRobot some may call it cheats, I call it efficient use of resources :P
doing the numbers in my head would take much longer...

Sprites for all 10 artifacts (small spoilers!) http://t.co/1Teqx4atTf

@RedRiderX Somewhat surprisingly, I find myself more comfortable in my own skin than last time.

I don't get #15

@GnomeSlice it's not easy, but it's possible to figure it out
get a calculator to speed things up, lol

12:10 AM
@Chippies didn't you say you skipped that one
oh, nvm

@GnomeSlice no, that was Origami

OKAY ITS DIABLO TIME AGAIN

@OrigamiRobot Oh whoops

omg facebook changed again

> The cakes are swiftly dealt with first with cameras and then with forks, and we all go back to sitting some more.

12:13 AM
@OrigamiRobot Too much "with"?

@Chippies I got nothing

I was thinking about that

what is up with that steam thing like who buys a game and never plays it?

Couldn't come up with something better

@GnomeSlice it took me a while as well

12:13 AM
@isthisbetter Sadly, a lot of people.

@RedRiderX When I was first reading this, my brain was expecting the sentence to talk about the order in which food was eaten. Like I was reading "First, the cakes were eaten"

@OrigamiRobot Hmm okay

@GnomeSlice but WHO

I think it should be "The cakes are swiftly dealt with, first with cameras, then with forks, and we all go back to sitting some more." but I'm not sure.
cc @spugsley

@GnomeSlice when you move on to next question, I can tell you the answer

12:14 AM
@isthisbetter People who buy game bundles, in particular.

No, that's too many commas.

puush stopped working
again

@OrigamiRobot it looks right but that first comma might be wrong
depends on if they are talking APA or MLA

@spugsley The problem is I read "The cakes are swiftly dealt with first" as a thought, but the word "first" doesn't go with that part of the sentence.

@spugsley Oh geez which style guide to use is the least of my concern right now

12:16 AM
Just 43 minutes and it is 1:59. 44 minutes and it is 3:00. This is weird

I'm going to do some bounties. Anyone should feel free to join me.

It's enough of a challenge for me to get the thing out the door altogether :P

@Sterno I'll join! Torment 1?

Yup

@Chippies Even my thinking music isn't helping.

12:18 AM
@GnomeSlice silence sometimes helps

@OrigamiRobot "The cakes are swiftly dealt with by people wielding cameras and forks, and we all go back to sitting some more."
That avoids the issue altogether.

Welp.

@RedRiderX Personally, I like the personification that you'd get by removing "people wielding", but that's just me.

@Chippies I don't want to give up

@GnomeSlice use all your brain power then :P

12:21 AM
@Chippies I'm stupid

@GnomeSlice well, just because you can't answer one question doesn't make you stupid

@OrigamiRobot Yeah me too

user58869
a slug is crawling up my back door, what should i do?

@Alex Burn the door down and replace it

user58869
that might hurt the slug

12:27 AM
It's obviously infected beyond recovery now.

I don't see the pattern
@Alex go into another room so you can't see it
and hope it doesn't come inside
I will finish this later
time to eat

user58869
i'm in another room already but i'm worried the slug will slowly go somewhere i dont want it to go in the house, i would hate to accidentally step on it or find it crawling over kitchen surfaces

user58869
how can i eject this thing from my home without killing it

@Alex try sliding a piece of paper under it gently while holding something under it to catch in case it falls (it will fall)
then put it wherever you want

user58869
i'll try that, but i'm worried that the paper will cut it, not meaning to make loads of fuss over a slug, but i'd just rather not cause it suffering, though it could be argued that i have no way of knowing that a paper cut will cause suffering to it, or that it is capable of suffering at all

12:31 AM
@Sterno I don't think I have you added on Bnet.

Sterno#1494

@Alex that's why you do it gently and slowly. Best if you use a harder type of paper and you can kinda push it towards the door at an angle, so it's less likely to pinch the slug between paper and door
@Alex also, from what I have read, slugs have no pain receptors whatsoever

user58869
@Chippies i used a tissue and put it outside

^actually scratch that, I think that was about ants, not slugs
@Alex good job! I'm assuming it's not cold winter where you are :P

user58869
it's cold out there

user58869
12:37 AM
but not snowing

@Alex well either way, if it was already outside, it probably will do just fine remaining outside.

user58869
today was quite a nice day... i imagine the slug will survive, after all it came in from the cold in the first place... but maybe it found it's way in because of the warmth

user58869
according to this they come in because they smell the pet food

user58869
it was hungry

> "He got mauled by a lion. At least he died doing two things he loved: running and feeding animals."

Bridge, today was a stupid day! But I got to shoot my first gun today which was pretty fucking awesome.

Compilers

Proposed Q&A site for researchers and developers who want a serious and high-level answer on specialized topics on compiler architecture, e.g. parsing, type checking, intermediate code, optimizations, architecture specific optimizations and others.

Currently in definition.

@AshleyNunn Well, now I'm scared of you getting an actual hug gun in real life.

user15026
@yuki Hahaha I am not sure that would be legal here ;) I think I have to leave those to the video games.

user15026
Even if it would mean missing out on delicious hugs.

@GnomeSlice @Chippies 190, and I guessed 18 and 19.

12:59 AM
@RonanForman I refused to guess stuff I wasn't sure of, but still, nice :)

@Yuki A hug gun sounds like something Pinkie would have

Has it really been that slow a day? My 2 stars are still top.

@RonanForman Weekends are always slow.

True.

Party cannon. Hug gun. What next, happiness ray?

1:02 AM
@Chippies I should have really put IDK, I think I guessed one of them right if it's 10 per answer, although I could also have guessed them both right and got another wrong. Oh well.

@RonanForman I am pretty sure I got 18 right and put IDK on 2 and I got 180 score, so it makes sense that it's 10 per answer.

I never did draw @AshleyNunn and her H.U.G. gun, I might get round to it eventually.

user15026
@ronan I would love that!

The joke is that I don't know what H.U.G stands for, and I'm not getting close enough to ask.

user15026
1:08 AM
:D

@RonanForman Humongous Unseemly Greeting.

@Yuki Ooooh nice

Or Hilariously Unseemly Greeting.
I was going for a penis joke for the first one, but I guess that wasn't clear.

Nope

Things I've learned from gaming: The more it looks like it couldn't actually function as a usable weapon, the stronger it is and more likely it is THE GREATEST WEAPON IN THE UNIVERSE.
I mean, look at this two-handed sword. That top-heaviness there would make it really annoying to handle.

1:16 AM

user15026
@Yuki Yeah, that seems to be a good rule

user15026
@PrivatePansy I love this :D

@OrigamiRobot there's actually a whole mess of different places you can put those two commas and still have a coherent sentence.
That said, pretty sure you always need two commas.

1:48 AM

Heh

@Yuki why does it say it's a two handed sword, but in the corner it says 1-Hand?

@Chippies Because shenanigans.

@Yuki That's what I thought!

1:54 AM
@LessPop_MoreFizz is that... real?

Do you actually care?

@LessPop_MoreFizz What a knob!

user15026
This guy makes really awesome patterns in wet clay on a potter's wheel and it is AMAZING and really mesmerizing.

@Yuki That was fascinating

The problem with the Bioshock stats, at least in my case, is that the game has no replay value for me.
I play for the story and once I get through one playthrough, all the value is lost. Or used up, rather.
So if I don't start my first playthough in 1999 mode, I'm never going to do 1999 mode.

Does this need the tag too?
He edited it back in

Airbrushing complete!
Now to reassemble the unicorn.

I'm not a fan of intrinsically high difficulty games like Dark Souls, but a lot of people use the Souls games as a skills-building experience.
What makes the Souls games so challenging?

so, I found this event area called "Vermin Alley" in D3 and there's an infinite spawn of rats, and I can just stand there and they all die from thorns and I don't even have to do anything...

@DragonLord Everything can kill you. Quickly.

You get punished pretty heavily if you make a mistake.

2:45 AM
From what I can tell, it takes a lot of trial and error and requires playing with a really high level of precision, but is that really it?

Would anybody care to comment on the tag thing I just mentioned

@GnomeSlice I think it's fine with both.

I just removed all other instances of though

@DragonLord That pretty much sums it up. It takes a good bit of patience to learn how things attack, and what you can do to counter.

and gave them the proper game names

2:46 AM
@DragonLord you do need to learn the timing and animations of your own and enemy attacks and you have to know what to expect from everything.
it does require set amount of skill, but it also requires a lot of in-game knowledge
Which is where trial-and-error comes in. Or google.

It just looks like what matters is "tight" gameplay
Caution every step of the way.
Some prior experience with playing "tightly":
"incredibly high difficulty": I'm playing the Android version in Hard mode, which matches the DS version in difficulty, and aside from the bosses, the game isn't too difficult for me. Yes, some bosses do require very tight play. When I fought Leviathan, Rosa had to cast Curaja right from the start while Cecil casted Shell. Then I had to revive and heal any KO'd characters, with very tight timing (like having Anna omnicast Curaga, then having someone else use a Phoenix Down halfway into the charge time). — DragonLord Jul 15 '13 at 4:15
(continued from previous comment) All of this had to be done before any attacks could be made, and I had to have Rosa and Cecil cast more healing spells in advance and in a staggered fashion while attacks were made so that I could keep up with Leviathan's attacks. Yes, it can get hard, but it isn't obviously so to someone with more than a decade of JRPG experience (one of my first JRPGs was Pokémon Crystal). — DragonLord Jul 15 '13 at 4:41
For context: the mentioned game is Final Fantasy IV for Android.
If I'm prepared to play in a similar fashion, should I expect much trouble with Dark Souls?

@DragonLord I had to click on the android version link to figure that out. I was stunned by the fact that Dark Souls is on android, lol, which I found out it's not
@DragonLord I can't comment on Dark Souls 2, but if you have patience and you can learn from mistakes, then you can certainly enjoy Dark Souls

Like I said, I'm not a fan of the Dark Souls style, but I take my skill seriously and would like to improve my overall gameplay ability

it is extremely satisfying to parry enemy attacks more or less consistently after a lot of trial and error

Dark Souls is all about realizing when you're making mistakes (and you will make mistakes) and learning from them.
Also, do not expect to go into Dark Souls and never die. Those runs only happen after playing the game for a long time.

2:54 AM
@Yuki Of course not
But I don't like having to retry dozens of times to get past something
And I realize that dying several hundred times is perfectly normal in any Souls game
Unless, of course, you're not making meaningful improvements every time you die

@DragonLord You'll hate Dark Souls then

a very important thing to learn early in the game is to dodge attacks
when you have that, you have to learn to parry consistently

@Chippies Also, HP is just a mistake buffer. The real resource is your Stamina.

Any other games which challenge players to learn from mistakes without being so tedious? I take skill very seriously.

when you can do both of those, you will be able to not die long enough to find out good ways to kill stuff or if you even should kill stuff
@DragonLord @DragonLord if you take skill very seriously, you shouldn't have many issues with Dark Souls
you WILL die, but if you are skilled enough, you will die due to lack of knowledge
which obviously once you die, you'll have learned that you can die that way
so if you are skilled, next time you can avoid that death

3:02 AM
Also, figuring out what enemies reset or can be skipped is extremely useful.

also, @DragonLord you mentioned FF IV as a skill example, but it's a jrpg
Dark Souls is much more action'y than any jrpg

If we ignore technical mistakes in gameplay (and yes, I have experience in ARPGs), what are the most common causes of death?

I haven't played FF IV, but I imagine "skill" in that game is more about thinking what to use and when

@DragonLord "Try Jumping."
or fighting an enemy 10, 20, 30+ times and then suddenly they pull a different attack on you.

So it seems Dark Souls requires either a lot of experimentation (with the attendant deaths) or a lot of prior research (which would include reading bloodstains left by other players)?
Dark Souls II statistics: On PS3, 67% of deaths result from enemies--which would seem to suggest that technical errors made by players account for the majority of deaths, but how many of them do you think arose from lack of experience or knowledge in handling a particular situation?

Apparently this info was on hte back of a still-non-expired box of cereal

@DragonLord Honestly, I'd say as many as were not the result of lack of experience or knowledge.
There are certain enemies in DS1 that I know how to deal with, but they still manage to surprise me from time to time.

As a person, what do I expect to gain if I spend 10-15 hours on Dark Souls?
How would it impact my playing style in other games, and would it affect the way I do everyday non-gaming tasks?
(As a high-difficulty game, completion is probably not the end goal.)
People seem to get a sense of enlightenment, so to speak, after playing Dark Souls
I'm evaluating a possible purchase of the Prepare to Die Edition on Steam, and I'd like to know if it's worth it.

You'll be more popular with the ladies.

@DragonLord You'll probably just make it out of Firelink Shrine after that time.

3:32 AM
The gist of the game's marketing seems to be "take the Dark Souls challenge, and see if you have what it takes to master one of the most difficult games in the world"
It's like an open invitation to a competitive tournament, where glory awaits the best players
...and that's probably why the game was a commercial success.

Q: the capability to use external hard drive on xbox 360 is unlimited?

xbbboprrrHello i read in this : one two These question explain than can only be used 16 GB (or 32 GB partitioned) in a externar USB storage Device on a xbox 360 listen to co-workers that a new update for Xbox 360 allows you to use the full capacity of a hard drive, for example a 1 TB external hard...

@DragonLord I dunno about that. Maybe a PvP tournament, but there are people who can speedrun the game in an hour and a half, so an actual tournament would probably be pointless.

@Fluttershy: I'm not saying that it is, but I'm likening it to one. It's the same basic premise behinds US Marines marketing: "The Few. The Proud. The Marines."

Q: Youtube gaming channel username ideas

xGh0stSn1p3rI wanna make a youtube gaming channel, but I need help choosing a username. I don't want a gay username that has like all numbers and x's in it, like my username here. I want a username like jackfrags, or levelcapgaming. Not those of course, but something similarly creative. I like usernames that...

It gives something players something to aspire to. Completing Dark Souls is mayhaps one of the biggest accomplishments a gamer can achieve.

user15026
3:42 AM
@DragonLord I think that sort of thing would really depend on the gamer, no? Because for me it doesn't really seem like OMG something to strive for

oops, extra "something" in my last message ;)
@Fluttershy: I think I should just ignore all the hype and get on with playing Borderlands. I've decided Dark Souls is not for me. I'll look for other ways to challenge myself (perhaps I can start by taking off my shield?)

Q: Should I wait until durability is low or shoud I repair every chance I get?

Fredy31In Gunz 2, should I wait until durability is low or shoud I repair every chance I get? What is the best choice, money-wise?

4:12 AM
@DragonLord Well, it definitely makes you more cautious.
And you start to try to learn patterns in enemy AI. Which may or may not help, depending on the game.
If you've played Dark Souls a lot, it definitely makes button-mashing combo games harder to play (God of War, DMC, Bayonetta if IIRC, etc.)

Dark Souls skill set is about pattern recognition, patience and timing. That isn't a skill set that's universally useful in video games (and, you could argue, it's a skill set that's actually declined significantly in the number and kind of AAA titles that really tap into it over the past ~10 years or so), but for those games in which it's valuable, you'll absolutely get better at it by playing DS.
If you're more interested in speed, coordination, strategy, or any number of other video game skillets, DS might not be the game for you.
The best comparison I can think of, in some ways, is Shadow of the Colossus. Both games employ very similar gameplay loops of exploration, observation, and exploitation. The key difference is that SotC builds those loops across a very small number of very large encounters, whereas DS builds them over a very large number of very small encounters.
Which has the interesting knock on effect of substantially increasing the raw quantity of failures, because that basic loop is basically sped up to 11.

4:30 AM
I like the "pattern recognition" and "timing", but not "patience". For example: Guitar Hero, Super Hexagon, One Finger Death Punch

4:50 AM
@StrixVaria I still think you'd enjoy DS. :3

@LessPop_MoreFizz ...which is why it's normal to die hundreds of times in a typical Dark Souls playthrough. It all boils down to reproducibly precise play.
Dark Souls is all about precision.
I've read that timing windows can be narrower than a tenth of a second, and of course, there is very little room for error.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Season 4 get

had to finish it off with other skills

@fredley Oh, I agree with him that if I interact with the company, I'll let it collect all the data it wants. But I'm not willing to interact with Facebook in the first place.
Amazon giving me crappy shopping recommendations and building a demographic? Sure, why not. Google collecting all sorts of data for all sorts of web enhancement across the board? Nyeh, gets a bit too much, but I'm fine with it. Facebook doing facial recognition and social analysis based on the content they receive, plus tracking users across sites with their like button despite having nothing to do with web infrastructure themselves? Hell no.

12:25 PM
@MadScientist wait, raising above 120°C?
I think it's more likely that your temperature sensor needs to be calibrated

@badp the typical idle temperature for this card is around 80 °C, and it did reach somewhere between 110 and 120 °C (the graph I used is a bit hard to read)

@MadScientist is it made of something other than silicium?

@badp The card is meant to run at aroun 90 °C, so I'm pretty sure there is still some headroom.

@MadScientist yes, but I thought the physical limit of silicium was 105

@badp Many CPUs seem to shut off around that temperature, but it doesn't seem to be a hard limit

12:38 PM
@MadScientist I... was told it was the melting point of at least the silicium itself

lolno.
Silicon's melting point is ~1400°C

1
A: How hot can electronics get?

Olin LathropAs Jonny said, for individual parts the best thing is to check their datasheets. However from a general or theoretical point of view, consider the temperature at which silicon ceases to act like a semiconductor. If I remember right from semiconductor devices class many years ago, that is around...

*ceases to act like a semiconductor

There seems to be a pretty hard limit of 150 °C

@badp That, yes, pretty low.

12:42 PM
There seems to be some research about 200°C but I don't have time to look at it.
(It's very nearly CET lunch time!)
(Okay, kinda late CET lunch time.)
(At least for mitteleuropean standards of lunch time)

14:43 is kinda late
that's wrong time

There

I mean, I have lunch at ~13:30 regularly

I forgot the clock only updates when I refresh the page

That's CET

@3ventic It's CET 13:44 right now.

GMT/UTC + 2 is CEST, or EET.

@3ventic This is why you don't want to make the mess worse and change what timezone labels mean at arbitrary points of the year.

Different countries changing to DST at different days, countries not using DST at all...

Consider for a moment the misnomer "Greenwich Mean Time".
What time is it now in Greenwich?

+1

So yeah, please do the right thing and distinguish non-DST timezones from DST timezones
(It also feeds in my whole personal mythos of CET being Correct Earth Time, so that's a plus. But just that: the cherry on top of a cake.)

@badp ... No.

12:51 PM
@FEichinger Y U SO MEAN
(see what I did thar huh huh huh see see)

@badp BECAUSE YOU'RE BEING A PEDANT.

@FEichinger I wouldn't be a pedant about this if it didn't actually matter to me in recent past!
Keeping people up to speed to what it means when weekly community events happen at 15:00 of whatever time zone New York happens to be using on any given week is surprisingly annoying
"oh hey wheres everybody arent we supposed to have a game now" "no you are a hour late we had to forfeit because you were a hour late you are a terrible human being" "but its 21:00 CET right?" "D:" etc. etc. etc.

Q: Offline multiplayer (3-4 Player) RPG for PC

Alex Steini have a question about an offline multiplayer rpg game for pc. I search a lot but the most games are for ps3 or xbox360 not for pc. Me and my friends plan a LAN but instead of playing games like minecraft or Diablo 3 (online) we want to play an offline multiplayer rpg game which we dont play bef...

Super Mario Bros at the Ice Capades - circa 1989:
I have no words
Wait there aren't any tools to push stuff to Google+ profiles?
FUDGE
That is annoying

1:29 PM
@RedRiderX like automatically pushing a blog post to Google+? Don't you know know that you should be blogging on Google+ to begin with?

@MBraedley No There is something for that
more cross posting stuff to both twitter and G+
Hootsuite can't do that
I could just let my wordpress blog cross post everything, but then you start getting links to links and no one wants that

There has to be something that will do it

Well you can push to G+ pages but not profiles
That 's the problem
Google won't release the apis for it

Well then you'll just have to set up a page

Well I have but I'm already pushing to my profile

1:33 PM
There's just no pleasing you, is there?

And I've already added all my friends on my profile and not my page
@MBraedley Nope

Good morning, Bridge

Good morning

How are we all this fine (and not freezing!) day?

Omigosh it's great

1:36 PM
Haha yeah it's awesome.

Q: How to have two players on one keyboard in Monaco?

Waldir LeoncioI've found a thread that explains how to do it. It involves simply downloading a couple of files, placing them in the appropriate folder and running the game. However, I can't make it work on Linux. Naturally, I've adapted the instructions and placed the files at ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/c...

thanks Obama

@Frank fever has broken, congestion has subsided, all in all, feeling much better

@MBraedley That's good to hear.

> Get your kid an IRBM missile launcher for christmas.

How'd your foray with Exploding Palm turn out?

@Mana Have you heard the new Swans song?

@RedRiderX IFTTT?

@PrivatePansy Oh
hmmm

@Frank haven't tried it yet. Was doing some Minecraft stuff last night

1:46 PM
@PrivatePansy Doesn't do G+, apparently.
No wait
Nope
It has Google Glass but no Google+

Google+ not having an API to spam the stream is a feature, not a bug
(in my very own, very humble opinion)
that said is should be trivial to add a +1/Share on G+ button

The Simpsons are surprisingly consistent
