@Frank What gnome linked, but Plague Inc. is the variant common for mobile devices and has many more options, game modes, twists, and alternate ways to play. So if you like the basic structure of Pandemic, I'd grab that.

Do you people like the game? I once installed Plague but never played it.

Plague is also on steam now I believe

@DwarfSlice Is that very similar to Plague?

@Cerberus Haven't played Plague.inc, but talking about pandemic...I might install and try it.

@Cerberus Yes

3:01 PM
@Cerberus Never played Plague, but it seems like it.

It's pretty much the same thing

@LessPop_MoreFizz I haven't played any of those games.
So I have nothing to base off of, other than what people here are saying about it.

@5pike You don't need to install it, it's a web game.

Plague Inc. is a much more polished robust game than Pandemic.

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz Truth.

3:03 PM
OK thanks.

user15026
@LessPop_MoreFizz I loved Plague Inc until I started thinking about killing off the planet as a thing and it causes the same emotional reactions as burning things in Little Inferno does and now I can't play it because I feel like a monster

Aww you must separate fiction and reality.

user15026
@Cerberus Theoretically, I know it isn't real and I know I am not that terrible but I just get so sad!

It is only healthy for you to image the most horrible things. All the better will you be able to deal with them.

@AshleyNunn There are some things in games I don't like doing, either.

3:05 PM
@AshleyNunn Right, each person has her limits...

user15026
@Cerberus This is not and never will be true for me.

Even in Hyrule Warriors, I wasn't a fan of playing as Ganondorf in the story, because I was being the bad guy.

Ganondorf is the shit

@AshleyNunn Up to a point, I think.

I WAS THE CAUSE OF THE WORLD DYING!

user15026
3:05 PM
Suffice it to say I have mental health things that prevent me from doing so in a way that makes sense

I am fine with blowing up planets.

@AshleyNunn name your virus something jokey to take the edge off

user15026
@Rapitor That might help!

like name your disease "pants"
pants are evil

But, say, killing an innocent child in an RPG, where I have some emotional investment...I can't do that, not even for the Magnificent Staff of Doom.

3:06 PM
@Rapitor I like this idea.

Okay, maybe if it has +++99 Fireball...

Infecting the world with Pants.
Sounds like it'd be pulling a page from Kill la Kill, where clothes are evil.

@Rapitor I hear everyone names his virus "Your Mom".

user15026
@Frank Wait what

@Frank spoilers dude, sort of

3:07 PM
@AshleyNunn Yes. In Kill la Kill, the big bad are clothes.

user15026
@Frank I don't even know what to say to that

@AshleyNunn It takes the magical girl trope, and turns it up to 11.

user15026
I can imagine it would

@AshleyNunn its by the many of the same people that brought us Gurren Lagann, so yeah. it's pretty bonkers.

user15026
@Rapitor I need to watch more of that, I started it forever ago and then got distracted

3:09 PM
@AshleyNunn It's got a pretty good story, but it's kinda overshadowed by the sheer amount of wackiness happening.

@Cerberus Usually in a RPG I'm able to disconnect my character from myself, but if a game employs strategic usage of the second person (Spec Ops: The Line), where it's not the character doing these things but you, things get weird for me.

@Unionhawk spec ops the line is the worst

It's so good though.

very good. but eugh -shudders-

Good art should make you a little uncomfortable sometimes, tbqh.

3:11 PM
@LessPop_MoreFizz This, pretty much.

Man, I loved Kill la Kill. It was silly to the point of absurd, but it was so good.

Survivium is the best plauge game.
Okay well maybe not, but it's pretty neat.

Plauge games are almost as fun as rouge games.
3

looks like the web version doesn't exist any more

@Unionhawk Hmm you mean the games says "you" to you?
I don't like children, but even I wouldn't want to kill them in an RPG.
In a game like Plague or Carmageddon, sure.

3:21 PM
@Cerberus The main example I'm thinking of (really the best example of this) is Spec Ops: The Line, where it's very repeatedly emphasized that "You made a bad call" and "You killed all these people", etc. It also presents several situations where it seems like you have a choice, but you end up being forced to take a more morally objectionable route.

Hmm I would probably laugh if they said "you have killed all these people".
An RPG needs to know its boundaries!

It's really something you just need to experience to understand the impact it really has. (alternatively, I'm bad at explaining things)
It's also not an RPG, it's a third person modern shooter.

Okay.
I will make a note hehe.

Crypt of the Necrodancer - Guide on how to deal with Daily Challenges:
1. Start your daily challenge
2. Get killed by a bat 1 minute into the run
3. Realize you must wait 10 hours before you can try again
4. Wat.

sounds like fun.

3:29 PM
@badp That's pretty much how my Quarries of Scred daily challenges go too.

@badp This sounds suboptimal for daily challenges.

user15026
Croissant with speculaas cookie butter = yum

As for how to deal with hardcode mode, there's this

3:35 PM
@AshleyNunn Nederlands?

sorry not sorry

user15026
@Cerberus Nope, just a lucky Canadian who found it at the grocery store

Oh, I see.
Didn't know they had speculaas abroad!
Fun fact: they call it speculoos in Belgium.

@badp Interesting comment about it being like a puzzle. Have you played the DROD games?

Nope.

3:37 PM
@badp They're kinda old at this point, but you may be interested in looking at them. forum.caravelgames.com/viewsitepage.php?id=90294

@AshleyNunn I'm also surprised they didn't rename it: the cheapest brand of speculaas here, which only has English on the packaging, just says "Dutch spiced cookies", I kid you not.

Puzzle Dungeon Crawlers

The game's not entirely unlike chess; every piece has its own movement rules
There's even a chess boss fight.

@Rapitor Yay, is that the 64 version or the Gamecube?

Deadly Rooms of Death (DROD) is a computer puzzle game. It was created by Erik Hermansen in 1997 and has been regularly extended since then. The original version of the game published by Webfoot Technologies is no longer available, but the newer Caravel DROD can be downloaded from the company's website. == History == The original release is by Webfoot Technologies in 1997 as version 1.03 of the game, followed shortly after with versions 1.04 and 1.11 to fix some bugs with unsolvable rooms and levels. This early version is commonly known as Webfoot DROD. In 2000, the original author of the game...

user15026
3:38 PM
@Cerberus That doesn't surprise me, my favorite speculaas are just called "spiced windmill cookies"

@Cerberus That's 64.

Green slime never moves. Blue slime stays put, then moves down, then stays put, then moves up. Yellow slimes move up, left, down, right. Fire and ice slimes do circles diagonally.

Although it has a mii in it, and falco.
Also samus effects from either brawl or melee

@Cerberus 3ds

Well then

3:44 PM
The thing that distinguishes this game from the rest in the roguelike space isn't so much that there are rhythm elements, or that you lose a coin multiplier when you mess up, or that you have actual graphical tiles, but that each enemy moves differently as opposed to either roaming randomly about the place or going straight towards you
It makes the rest of the roguelike games seem... kind of dumb? Movement patterns look like a great idea, although they make the game significantly easier once you've figured them out.
Even then though the game can keep throwing you in situations where corner cases matter, and their interaction with your equipment and whatnot can still potentially catch you unprepared.
So iunno.

@Frank While it doesn't make up for Tankersley's death, watching her revenge is a lot of fun. She just challenged Pavel

@SaintWacko After demolishing Summervale.

@Frank Right
Summervale's terror was delicious

You will enjoy what happens.

@badp I think it's more about different games focusing on different things. Nethack basically has the dumb enemies you describe, but it has a ton of different items and enemies and most of them interact in some way

3:49 PM
She sorta destroys the entire Young family in a couple more books.

@AshleyNunn Haha exactly.
@Rapitor Okay...

By the way, why did they name a woman Samus?

@Frank Holy shit

@Cerberus Nintendo.

3:54 PM
@Cerberus because reasons

and Link looks the same

@SaintWacko Like it?

OK makes perfect sense.

@Frank I didn't realize even he would stoop that low

@SaintWacko Terror makes people do very irrational things.

3:58 PM
I can't believe I've never read these before
I've read a similar series
But not written as well
And it had ansibles

@Blem Don't leave us in suspense! Finish it off!
@SaintWacko Ender's Game sequels.

@Frank Nah, different series
Ansible isn't an ender's game thing

@SaintWacko There's another series that has ansibles?

It's been in use a lot longer than that

@SaintWacko Isn't it?

4:00 PM
@Frank Ansible is a general scifi term for FTL communication
An ansible is a fictional machine capable of instantaneous or superluminal communication. Typically it is depicted as a lunch-box-sized object with some combination of microphone, speaker, keyboard and display. It can send and receive messages to and from a corresponding device over any distance whatsoever with no delay. Ansibles occur as plot devices in science fiction literature. == Origin == The word ansible was coined by Ursula K. Le Guin in her 1966 novel Rocannon's World. Le Guin states that she derived the name from "answerable," as the device would allow its users to receive answers to...

@AshleyNunn Because books. I also blame @fae, but she wasn't pingable.

Aww, @wipqozn and @frank, you guys were arguing about downvotes in my chat backscroll. So considerate to leave me some drama to read!

4:12 PM
@Sterno You're welcome.
You should really be thanking, @JasonBerkan, though. He's the one that brought it up.

Nah, he's old. No thanks for old people

hey you're not a turtle what gives

@BenBrocka @Wipqozn's gravatar updated!

@TimStone Yeah I saw that. I like the in-game shift code redeeming station, but don't like that it doesn't just add 'em to your inventory if you enter a code

Q: How are level-up bonuses determined?

Hyper AnthonyWhen the player level (not fever level or character's power-up level) increases, the player is rewarded with some items. I'm currently at level 35, and these have almost always been 15 red star rings. However, I've also infrequently gotten a Chao token, and some number of rings. How are these b...

> Dr. Tom Frieden, director for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said during a telephone press briefing Wednesday that you cannot get Ebola by sitting next to someone on a bus, but that infected or exposed persons should not ride public transportation because they could transmit the disease to someone else.

"I think there are two different parts of that equation," he continued. "The first is, if you’re a member of the traveling public and are healthy, should you be worried that you might have gotten it by sitting next to someone? And the answer is no."
whaaaaat?

Ice guns in Borderlands TPS are soooo fun

@Sterno The National Post ran an editorial today - "I'm not afraid of ebola, I'm afraid of the CDC".

That reads a lot like: "Don't be scared to ride the bus. You can't get Ebola from some guy sitting next to you. But hey, if you've got Ebola, don't get on the bus. You don't want to spread it to the guy sitting next to you."

@Sterno A better way to put it would be "Don't be scared to ride the bus. You can't get Ebola from some guy sitting next to you. But hey, if you've got Ebola, don't get on the bus. You don't want to vomit on some guy net to you, because then he'd probably get it."

@LessPop_MoreFizz Right. So don't be worried about sitting on the bus until someone vomits on you.
That's business as usual.

4:22 PM
Ebola is fundamentally a caretakers disease. It spreads to people who are spending significant time around someone wallowing in the throes of disease.

My wife is a doctor and my toddler goes to a daycare where every single thing in the room is at some point in every toddler's mouth. It makes it slightly more scary. Not wrapping yourself in plastic at the airport scary, though
But man, I hate to think what would happen if a kid at any daycare ever got it. That shit would spread fast

I am really glad that I'm not going to have to deal with daycares.
I'm still dreading years from now when my daughter starts going to school, though.

And then when she starts dating
and starts driving
and goes to college
Or looks at a picture of @Wipqozn's socks

I don't see myself being quite so worried about those things. My mindset may change by that time.
I'm mostly worried about school because I'm not very tolerant of bad teachers.

I'm pretty sure @Wipqozn's socks are the origin of Ebola

Quite the free to play weekend Steam is planning

@Sterno Okay, this is pretty fantastic.

@Batophobia Nothing in there I'm really interested in playing, except those that I already own.

I really, really hate Microsoft Word today

4:47 PM
I might finally play Payday2 or Don't Starve

@AshleyNunn So just like every other day?

user15026
Actually, no

user15026
but today I am trying to accomplish important things and it won't let me do what I need to do

@KevinvanderVelden Inderdaad!!

@Frank in case you haven't found it yet (reverse image search ftw):

@AshleyNunn Is Post Master any good?

user15026
@DwarfSlice I like it

@KevinvanderVelden I totally missed the fact she went into Morph Ball.

@Frank I did too :D

@DwarfSlice Gets very bad reviews...

4:54 PM
@Cerberus I like a lot of games with bad reviews, that's why I asked her and not them. ;]

OK just FYI.
Like which games?
I was going through the games in that bundle but could find little information about them.

@Cerberus Krater is a good example.

user15026
@DwarfSlice It's kinda confusing, make sure you go through the tutorial very carefully if you do play it

@AshleyNunn I always do tutorials. Mainly bought it for Warring States and Commando Jack, but we'll see. :)

Q: Group Manager Permissions Not Working When Adding Via Game Command

DangerfieldUKI wanted my Moderators and above to be able to /feed, and so I did the command: "/mangaddp Moderator essentials.feed" This then said that the permission had been given to the assigned group (and above due to inheritance). Next I did "/manload" to make sure the groups were loaded properly, but ...

5:00 PM
@DwarfSlice Hmm I am looking at a review right now, which calls it "apathy". destructoid.com/review-krater-230056.phtml
But of course we each have our personal tastes.

It's a good game.
I enjoyed it. :)

Where did I put my knife.
stabs coworker You're the database designer, why the f' would I know why the dev and prod databases are different.

sigh Yes, removing a dependent row in a separate table will cause things to break. Why why this row removed? I have no idea.

@Frank I'm not even talking about table changes... I'm talking about changes in stored procedures and Oracle types. If he's used an SCM (like he's supposed to) he could just, you know, check the log to see when these changes were made and hopefully why.
Now, instead, I'm being asked to troll through our application codebase and try to figure out why these are different.

5:05 PM
@Powerlord I'm talking about a problem I'm dealing with at the moment.
But yeah, having a dev and prod database being different sounds...sub-optimal.

@Frank Oh, I thought you were commenting on what I'd just said.
@Frank Well, they will be different for changes made in dev that haven't been moved to UAT or Prod yet.

@Powerlord Which makes sense.
I suspect that's not what you're talking about, though.

Well, what's worse is that, despite these being Oracle database types, he's giving me local variable names from the PL/SQL code. Which I didn't write.
First file: Both the variables he mentioned are present in the code on my side. Meaning that both are variables on the type on the Oracle side. So, my answer on that one is "they both exist"
(wow, so useful, right?)
@Frank Oh right, no... he apparently did edits directly on the prod DB (warning: we're not supposed to do that. He shouldn't even have the prod DB password, only our DBA should)

Helloooooo Bridge

@Powerlord Guh.

5:13 PM
The bridge is quiet? There must be a new Bethesda game out :P

@Brian Or we're all actually working. :P

@Brian some of us may actually be working
i'm not though. im on twitch ;l

So...what I should be doing
actually I'm eating lunch right now and decided to pop in
Also, there's something weird typing that previous comment from Bethesda
Although Bethesda Softworks isn't actually in Bethesda anymore, they're about 15 minutes up the road from here now
not sure if that makes it more or less weird
I see we're emphasizing the -fun tag today

@DwarfSlice Cool. I wish they would pick their bundle names better though. The Destiny Bundle doesn't include Destiny.

5:21 PM

I'm actually working.

I just wanted to post two comments.

@Batophobia It's true! I'm working on a Wine site.

@Wipqozn You mean not wine the Windows emulator?

Man, why did @Wipqozn ever think posting his gross socks was a good idea?

lol

What happens if you use Energize on Reload in Clicker Heroes?

You shave two hours off the last skill you used

5:31 PM
@OrigamiRobot I ask myself that everyday.

In music news, Monstercat 019 Endeavour will be released Oct 22nd

@badp Not really, I think. I use 6,8,9 then wait 15 minute 8,9 and both casts of 9 remove one hour of 6.

Wasn't it supposed to be october 18th that it's free?
I even marked my calendar

@Brian They moved it up two days.

5:35 PM
@JasonBerkan Oh...why?

@Brian Don't know. If you are cynical - to make certain you were actually following their community group.

daaang. Double gilded Frostleaf

@StrixVaria permanently like L4D2 was last xmas

Nice. I will have to remember to do that when I get home.

@3ventic And like Portal was 5 years ago, which is what made me create a Steam account.

and it's been all uphill from there...except for my wallet...and my free time...and my social life...and my sleep schedule...

@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment that sounds annoying. like those kids who purposely say "why"

@Arperum I don't really have a way to know as my longest cooldown is 2h

@Rapitor What if they don't really say "why"?

user15026
@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment What does that even mean

@AshleyNunn Perfect question to ask on whatif.SE

5:50 PM
Darn, "What?" is too short.

@Unionhawk Add more ?

@Batophobia Then the joke is ruined!

@NewlyOpenedProposalsforEntertainment What if they added a downvote button for SE proposals, so we could immediately shut down things like this nonsense?

@badp Same here, and it shaves off one hour, but if you then wait 15 minutes, you can shave a second hour.

@Brian That's not how it's supposed to work.

5:52 PM
@Arperum Well then how do you know it's just shaving one hour?
If it shaved 1 or 2 hours, it'd be the same.

There's a reason A51 is moderated pretty much exclusively by SE staff

@badp because 6, 8, 9 (dark ritual, then energize, then reload) shaves one hour away from dark ritual.

@badp Good idea

@Arperum Why would you ever do that?!
I mean, touchè, it only removes one hour (I guess that the game doesn't consider reload and energize to be skills to begin with) but that seems like a terrible idea.

5:54 PM
@badp Shh, you make too much sense.

@badp and if you cast nothing for the next fifteen minutes and then energize, reload, it allows you to cast dark ritual again.

@badp it's technically a real proposal... just abad one

@Arperum 869-9 lets you cast 10% dark rituals every 30 minutes anyway

@badp true, that would be the better option.

6:05 PM
I want this, but I already have a new-tab page extension.

@Chippies @badp @Arperum Sooo I dropped down to 70 heroes but I snagged the idle dps ancient

For anyone who doesn't feel like clicking that, Google is making a game console that looks like it will compete directly with the Ouya

@Blem I am considering it myself, this run seems to be a soul starved run and I am not likely to get 30 souls from it :/

@Brian Neat.
gamestick 4 lyfe

(which could be disastrous for the Ouya, since it isn't doing great anyway)

Hmm only 8 GB of storage?
1GB of RAM?

@Brian Read that as 99 games... Bleh, same thing I saw yesterday :D

Is the Ouya in such a good position that it can suffer a "disaster"?

@Cerberus Yeah its pretty skimpy and Wifi connection only

6:49 PM
Right.

despite already needing an HDMI connection for video

Why not buy one of those Androids-on-a-stick?
They're cheap and they may have better specs.

@Cerberus Same as Ouya

@James It's actually only 407%

@Cerberus ...what?

6:50 PM
@badp Yeah I am not going to talk over that mechanic with you again :)

@Brian Okay, then the Ouya doesn't seem very attractive either...

@Cerberus I have one. It...could use a hardware upgrade.

@Brian I don't have a television set so this is not my thing, but they exist.
@Brian nods

@Cerberus You mean like GameStick?

Considering android games are pretty small 8gb of storage is plenty.

@Brian Never heard of it...
@Rapitor They're not!
There are plenty of games that take up Gigabytes.

@James :(

@Chippies :)
