@Frank Apparently, MH4 on 3DS does allow for online play.

Q: Arma II looking for hosting,options are Private Hive and Breaking Point

ErocMI am looking to rent a server for my and a couple of friends. We are new to the game and do not know enough about it to know what I'm looking for when renting. I have the option of Private Hive or Breaking Point. Are there more options than this? What is the difference and what would bring peop...

@Yuki It better

@Yuki Which is great. Now they just need to bring it over here.

Q: A cap on reputation from a single answer (not daily, but forever)?

ShahbazI have seen this question before, but it seems to be talking about the daily cap. The idea came to me when I saw this profile. This is one guy who has only 1 answer (and 1 score 4 question) and 5k reputation. The reason being the fact that he has answered a question viewed by many people. I bel...

This is a good suggestion.

3:01 PM
Capcom's apparently been paying a few Let's Players to do MH3U. I think that's a pretty good sign they're keying up for a Western release of MH4.

@ElfSlice It has 500 upvotes in the last 4+ years.

@Yuki That's...odd considering their offical stance on them

@Yuki You'd think they'd do that after announcing its release over here.

It's still 5K from a single answer. That's not really a good indication of the user.

@BenBrocka That's what I heard from one of my friends who watches a lot of Let's Plays.
Quite a few of his favorites have been doing Monster Hunter, apparently.

3:02 PM
@Lazers I'm assuming that Private Hive and Breaking Point are game modes?
If not, there's not much we can answer in that question.

True, but I'll also note that I've gotten a lot of rep from a single answer, too

@Frank Since when have gaming companies ever done marketing in a logical manner?

A: Find duplicate records in MySQL

PowerlordThe key is to rewrite this query so that it can be used as a subquery. SELECT firstname, lastname, list.address FROM list INNER JOIN (SELECT address FROM list GROUP BY address HAVING count(id) > 1) dup ON list.address = dup.address

@Frank It's probably hosting service providers.

Although I think my favorite single answer is this one

3:04 PM

A: 'AND' vs '&&' as operator

PowerlordIf you use AND and OR, you'll eventually get tripped up by something like this: $this = true; $that = false; $truthiness = $this and $that; Want to guess what $truthiness equals? If you said false... bzzzt, sorry, wrong! $truthiness above has the value true. Why? = has a higher precedence...

I dunno what my favourite answer is.

A: How do I unlock the hidden/secret vehicles?

ElfSliceThere are two vehicles which cannot be unlocked just by playing the game: Core Drone "Intimidator" Knight Cycle However, if you do some jiggering with the game files, you can enable them both for use in the game, and have them show up in the list of vehicles. If you'd like to do this...

Maybe that one.

I wonder what the current weapon usage distribution looks like in MH4.
I'm expecting to see a preponderance of Insect Staves and Charge Axes.
And Bowgun usage will fall to an all-time low.

@Powerlord HATE
The answer is good, but PHP...

@MechanicalLoon It applies to more than just PHP... all C-based languages that have "and" and "or" keywords act like this.
It's actually kinda funny seeing perl code that says something or die("Error message")
(which is really common in command-line perl stuff for some reason)

3:11 PM
@Powerlord It's more quickly written and more readable than || die("You suck")
(There's also a bit about different precedence, but it mostly doesn't matter).

@MartinSojka The answer I linked is talking about precedence.
Also, why do I always type that as "precendence" and have to go correct it before hitting enter?

@yuki thanks for the info. I might have overdeleveled that boss now. 2 bronze locusts, 2 depantsing bombs, 2 casts of soul finger. And then he couldn't even hit me anymore.

because I don't see it starred
Papo & Yo, Runner 2, Surgeon Sim, To the Moon
Good stuff.

I'm trying to remember if I have Runner 2 on Steam.

@yuki I got a second natty blue ascot drop too this run. It wasn't too bad :)

3:17 PM
@Arperum Yeah, the Man (and the Big Wisniewski) are pretty much impossible to defeat without either deleveling or being way over-leveled.
@Arperum Nice!

I have Runner 1 and To the Moon so I feel no urge to get this one.

@Yuki I didn't know about these soulsauce things, those were added way later than I played before, and I completely overlooked them.

But if you don't have To the Moon just go get it.

Q: What are the key differences between Terraria and Starbound

JutschgeI'm thinking about buying Starbound, but at the moment it just looks like a Terraria with aliens and different items. I kinda liked Terraria but I don't wanna spend money on the same game with only like 3 differences. So could one of you guys explain to me what the big differences between these ...

@Powerlord Steam says yes.
@RedRiderX Papo & Yo

3:19 PM
@Lazers Didn't we get a question like this already?

@Frank You can come over to my house and we'll all sit around on the couch and play. It'll be awesome.

@RedRiderX You have Runner 1, but that's not Runner 1 in the package.

@ElfSlice Eh yeah I heard about it nice analogy but it didn't seem super interesting to me.
@Powerlord Yes I know

Q: Is Starbound the sequel to Terraria? or what is their relationship?

QuinmaA game called 'Starbound' popped up on Steam and I am confused as I am waiting for Terraria 2. I love Terraria and some various websites said that the Starbound developer team has members from the Terarria team. Also terraria 2 and starbound are both supposed to feature infinite worlds and spac...

@Sterno Nope. I don't have the 3DS MH. You have to come over here.

3:20 PM
@RedRiderX It's won multiple awards. Apparently very good.

But other then the OMG3D it's not super different

also Surgeon Sim

@Sterno That's the one I'm looking for.

@ElfSlice Eh that's a joke too many people took seriously.

Does anybody want Papo & Yo?
@RedRiderX It's actually pretty fun

3:21 PM
@ElfSlice I did play the original.
It's fun
But no, I don't feel the need to play any more of it.

@Arperum I haven't either. I just looked up Sauceror and was all, "What's this?"

@Sterno Not really the same though.

@Yuki It's quite good actually.

@Ullallulloo I (maybe) agree. I didn't care to really evaluate them, I just knew it's what @Frank was looking for

3:23 PM
@Arperum Yeah, Sauceror needed some better skills. I mean, for a Mysticality/Moxie class, it didn't really have any way of avoiding damage.

Personally I think the "key differences" question is probably too broad.
Please define to me what makes a difference "key".

Q: How are you supposed to get up the last room before the boss in the water temple?

Mechanical LoonThe second-to-last room of the water temple features a slanted floor with 3 sliding spike things going across. You have to get to the top. That gif is awesome

@Arperum It didn't have any stuns before Soul Sauce.
All Saucerors could do was mitigate damage with the Spheres.

@Yuki Uhu, and having that is really usefull.

@ElfSlice That art/animation style looks like the guy who does the Simon the Cat stuff.

Q: What's the difference between buying bitizens from the store and buying from the album?

HanWhat's the difference between buying bitizens from the store or the album? Also, buying a bitizen this way doesn't seem to unlock that species in the game, even if ...

'What's the difference' questions seem to be the new trend.
Lets all go be cool and ask some.

They're horrible.
And you're a monster if you ask one.

@ElfSlice What's the difference between gaming and gaming?

A: What's the difference between FortressCraft and Minecraft? Who cares?

Grace NoteI disagree with banning these wholesale. I don't disagree that we can close some of these as "Not A Real Question", citing Raven's answer. Consider a very close kin to these kinds of questions - version differences. Which has its own tag, even. But both of them operate on the same intent - they...

@Yuki Italics!

This is our policy, btw.

@Sterno The game-rec close vote is troubling, as it indicates a lack of knowledge about why game-recs are disallowed.

The asker has to be a little more specific in the areas that he's wondering about, but they're not banned as a whole.
Starbound and Terrarria is actually a pretty good thing to ask about.

3:35 PM
@JasonBerkan Game-recs are disallowed because gaming is off-topic.

And Fluttershy saves the day with the final close vote as Too Broad.

@Fluttershy Was about to say... "too abroad"?

Screw you, autocorrect. iPhone autocorrect is the worst.

I was thinking, "Wait, questions can be closed if they're asked from Cambodia?"
2

Yes. It just depends on the question.

3:38 PM
@Fluttershy "How do I play Call of Duty without being killed in an ethnic cleansing?"
... too insensitive?

As for the whole Terraria/Starbound thing... It's comparing apples to oranges, and I hate those kinds of questions. "What's the difference between Call of Duty: Modern Opsfare 26 and Battlefield 8?" A lot of things.

@Fluttershy But apples and oranges are both fruit! And round-ish!
And grow on trees! Oh, the similarities!

@Fluttershy Arguably, Terraria and Starbound have a lot of similar mechanics, so it makes sense to look for the differences.
But it'd definitely be too broad, on grounds of them taking completely different directions off of those core mechanics.

@FEichinger CoD and BF have a lot of similar things too.

3:40 PM
@FEichinger Why?
The current answer seems okay.

@Ullallulloo Referring to the old question, or the new one?

Nihilumbra is basically Portal 2 Gels: The Game

@FEichinger The one that was just closed.

Meh. I'm fine if it's closed as too broad. It's a crappy question.

3:42 PM
Our policy seems to be that you have to show that the games appear similar enough or to narrow it down to a specific area of the game.

@Ullallulloo And that's the problem I see: There are many "specific areas" of the game/s that are vastly different.

@Fluttershy "What's the difference between Call of Duty and Battlefield in Cambodia?"

Starbound and Terraria really seem similar enough for this question to be fine.
4

@Ullallulloo And we already have one question like that.

And for a good in-depth answer, you should talk about every single one of these areas. Which would be an awful lot, from what I can tell.

@JasonBerkan Yeah, that vote seemed to be hunting for keywords in the question.

@Frank As far as I can tell, this now has a clear objective, is no longer focused on a specific way to edit it and opens up to different solutions. It could be phrased even better to approach this from a "Is there any way to get past L100?" angle, but I don't see how that still fits the "too broad" it was originally closed as.

World population

3:57 PM
@Ullallulloo Some of those cities are way out of proportion.

@FEichinger Yeah
It's population density I think.

@Ullallulloo Even then.

@Ullallulloo Must not be, Hong Kong isn't highlighted

@Ullallulloo I do not see a big spike for Manila, which is twice as dense as NYC.

Yeh, really makes no sense.
Hong Kong would be larger if it was density, Berlin would be larger if it was population (or about half the size of Paris, if it was for the metropolitan region).
BAD GRAPH IS BAD.

4:00 PM
I was just about to cancel my close vote and it closed :(

@Sterno Reopenvote

Thought about it more and I don't think the question was great but I don't think my close reason was good
But yeah, it drives me nuts when someone asks a question and mention they care because they're trying to decide whether or not to buy the game, and that turns into a "we don't do game rec!" close reason

@Sterno That has a utility that does the grunt work for you. Where's the hex editing?
And as far as I can see, it's a utility that just edits .ini files.

@Frank Hex editing is a little more complicated, but it's the same sort of thing.

4:07 PM
@Sterno Repost the ones I posted.

Which are in plain text.

wat

@Frank compiled ini files

@Sterno With a tool that does the grunt work for you.
Hex editing is a whole different beast.

@Frank Is that relevant somehow?

@Frank My particular answer used the tool.

@Frank Depends on the editor and instructions given.

4:09 PM
Other answers could exist without that tool
I just thought the tool was the best way to do it

@Sterno And that I'm fine with.

"hex editor" does not universally mean "I'm only looking at the memory values"

So it wasn't a question about editing .ini files. It was a question about editing a .bin file

It could be a util that already parsed for relevant addresses.

Now that that save file question has been edited to focus on just altering the save file, I'm fine with it.

4:10 PM
The utility in my answer just made it a hell of a lot easier to do it then dicking around yourself

I haven't looked at the util provided, but considering that it's a util specific to the game, I would assume it does that.

Note that I didn't even read your save file question. Maybe that one is awful. I just disagree that hex editing is outside the realm of gamer expertise

Speaking about the question you're trying to close, primarily.

I still don't like the question, but it's now much more acceptable.
@Sterno I do.

Argh, why do I have one of the Xenogears songs stuck in my head.

@Frank It's a good thing we don't agree or something would be wrong.

@Sterno Back in the day, it was a huge part of being a PC gamer.
Or even a console gamer, what with the Game Genie.

@JasonBerkan I have one of those!
Well, my father has one of those.

It's not a reasonable side expertise that we can be expected to be familiar with.

@JasonBerkan Maybe for you it was, but I've never felt the need to hex-edit to cheat.

@Powerlord How else did you mod in new ships in X-Wing?

@JasonBerkan Well, I didn't play X-Wing. Or Tie Fighter. Or X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter.

Or create new levels in Dark Forces?

@JasonBerkan When I created new levels for the games I did play, I generally used their level editors.

4:13 PM
(I was such a Star Wars geek...)

Which is why they were there.
(I'm mainly speaking of Duke Nukem 3D here)
Oh god, I still remember the "throw everything into a single level" level I made.
I also remember how one of my friends made a police car thing that he wanted to move around the level (DN3D supported "trains") but for whatever reason, its "wheels" stayed in place while the upper part moved, which made for some... interesting... bugs.
Since they were still attached to the moving part.
See, now I'm tempted to try working with Valve's Hammer editor again. Thanks a lot. >:/

@Powerlord There's a lot of modding done to games that never had any modding tools.

@Powerlord Opening it once and looking at the interface should cure you really quickly.

@MartinSojka I've opened it before.
Even made a simple test map thingy
However, nothing on the scale of a real map.
Having said that, I've already picked up a few things for later on, such as what areaportals are and where to use them.

@MartinSojka lol

4:18 PM
@Powerlord Me too. And said "screw it, if I ever need to do anything for that, I'll do it in Blender and see that I convert it somehow".

@MartinSojka Whoa. The UI must be bad if you'd rather use Blender.

@JasonBerkan You've never seen the Hammer editor's UI?

I've made a few maps for HL2 deathmatch in the Hammer editor.

@FEichinger Nah. I've had nothing to do with Source games, other than buy them on sale and not play them.

@MechanicalLoon That's the least of my issues with it - you really do need those multiple views. Menu depth and the like is terrible, though, and that is a big problem.

OK, seriously? You guys schedule a project kickoff meeting which, incidentally, would be the first time I meet you guys, and you schedule it during a block of time my calendar has me marked as Out Of Office because I'm picking my cousin up from the airport?
Also, why are you only scheduling it a day ahead?

Medusa Trees?

(Technically, I have two conflicting appointments because I also have a standing 11:00-12:00 appointment on Mondays and Thursdays for my other project)

4:34 PM
@Wipqozn You should see them on hard.
But yeah, at a certain point it's just like "Oh, free FOE kill, thanks"

@GraceNote looks like they were first introduced in EOIV.
Actually, not sure.

Correct
Medusa Trees were first in EO4, at least by that name.
That said despite the name they had absolutely no means of petrification.

The ones in EOU do

I gathered by "Stone Gleem"
Which I actually figure is actually Stone Gleam but I'm giving Wipqozn the benefit of the doubt as if he ever spelled right.

@GraceNote YOU CRAZY KIDS
but they are anew enemy. It looks like they replaced sickwoods.

4:37 PM
Honestly, even at appropriate level they weren't that hard. They just ate up a lot of resources

I just found when I was first going through floors with them they'd just petrify al day long and then I'd cry.

That was my least favorite stratum

@Wipqozn Cry stony, gravelly tears.

When I beat the main story I'll need to just pretend I stopped playing again so I can beat the post-game content and mock @Sternold for having not finished it himself.

@Wipqozn I'll counter-mock you for playing on Normal.
Oh, wait, I just did.

4:42 PM
@Sterno I've really been playing on super ultra extreme turbo hard II.

I wanna go home and play more Risk of Rain. :(

@Fluttershy You changed your gravatar again.

@Fluttershy I wanna go home.

@Wipqozn But not my name!

@Wipqozn You only just noticed?

I bought a new house yesterday. I celebrated by spending 4 hours shoveling the driveway.
Now I'm celebrating by crying about how much movers cost

@Sterno My word sir! Congrats.

@Sterno Congrats!

But seriously... everyone should be playing Risk of Rain.

And it's not that much different from the previous one.

This library purging thing just keeps blowing up: theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/…

@MBraedley the old one had a hoodie. It made him look al rebellious.
Rebelshy.

@Sterno Congrats, though I have found that movers are worth every penny.

@JasonBerkan I suspect that as well.
I've never used them before but I've just got too much stuff now to try to do it myself. Especially heavy stuff

@Sterno I'd recommend the best movers I know, but they are local, so not much help to you.

I solo'd my wife's house when she moved in with me, and I think I earned about 14 levels since I didn't have to split the XP with anyone. But NEVER AGAIN

@Wipqozn It'll be closer to millenia.

@Sterno My word that's impressive.

@Wipqozn That doesn't even count cross-class levels!

@Wipqozn I have a really good Rebelshy gravatar that I could use. But I like the cute one. :3

@RedRiderX Someone's gotta pay for that!

@Sterno They could donate it to a University right?
I'm sure someone would have taken it on.

@RedRiderX some (not all) universities are having trouble paying for their libraries

Yeah I guess so

@Sterno Or I'm old and that shirt is not using 2nd edition rules.

4:54 PM
@JasonBerkan Clearly some sort of baby modifier is applied, since a 20 is not a normal possible Charisma score for a human.

@Sterno Ew, no class levels?

This is the point where my wife would roll her eyes, exclaim "Geeks!" and leave the room.

@Sterno You can get 20 at level 1 with a human in 3.5.

@OrigamiRobot Yes.

@OrigamiRobot It is now. It wasn't back in the day. -10 was the best. 10 was the worst.

3 AC basically means you mine as well not eve have any AC.

@OrigamiRobot Which makes things confusing when you switch between D&D and Nethack.

@JasonBerkan Did it used to be a roll modifier?

4:57 PM
@OrigamiRobot Yes. What is it now?

I dunno. I only play GURPS :P

@JasonBerkan It's a modifier, but it's used to compare to attack rolls.
Essentially, the attacker adds up his roll with a bunch of modifiers and sees if it trumps AC plus armor modifiers.
If it does, attack succeeds. If not, attack fails.

@Yuki I believe if attack == AC it passes as well.

@Yuki That means AC isn't a modifier.

I can't remember actually.

4:58 PM
AC is the target value.

@OrigamiRobot Oh buuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrn

@OrigamiRobot It's a defense modifier.

Because you have base 10 defense, AC, size modifier, etc.
And you add all those up to get the total defense.

@Yuki no sir.

4:59 PM
@Yuki IIRC, AC is the sum of all defenses.

your armor provides a bonus to AC.
AC is the total value.

But what do I know.

@OrigamiRobot The correct explanation.

alternating current?

@3ventic Yes.
