@GraceNote there are entirely too many distinct versions of "slightly angled line"

@BenBrocka That's rather the beauty of it. (⊙ω⊙)

Q: Am I allowed to post a better question?

EnderSometimes I see a question about a game I'm very familiar with and can indentify strongly with the asker in that the question asked should be answered. Sometimes, their version of the question is horrible, but un-editable without making it 'my' question instead of theirs. In this situation am I s...

BACON!

@OrigamiRobot It wasn't awful, but it wasn't awesome. It was just kind of meh.

So yeah, if you want a beer don't take a Rudler
That's this evening's main takeaway
@GraceNote That's... quite a few joints in your arm there
Curtain arms?

8:07 PM
@badp That's a laughing crescendo.

@badp Radler, you mean?

Think of it like writing "AHAHAHAHA[...]" with the font size of each "HA" incrementing up one pt.

@ShotgunNinja uh, I guess.

Radler is a mix (50/50 or 40/60) of beer and German-style soda pop or lemonade.
according to teh Wikipediaz.

Yes. Also known as "not beer."

@GraceNote then you're certainly limiting yourself. You could go as big as ╱╲

@badp That's a giant caret.

@GraceNote just throw a thin space in the middle

That'd also be equilibric in size.

8:15 PM
@ShotgunNinja I like mixed drinks but beer would not be high on my list to mix with other stuff

Q: In Batman: Arkham City, how does activations and installation limits work?

SteininI am considering a purchase of the Game of the Year edition of Batman: Arkham City on Steam but I have heard a lot of rather negative information regarding the number of installations and activations of the game. My greatest fear is getting locked out of the game entirely, perhaps not immediately...

@AshleyNunn Is it chocolate cake?

user15026
@RonanForman I baked a cake just for you lookatit

user15026
@fbueckert Yellow cake. with a whole jar of sprinkles in

8:36 PM
@AshleyNunn That's a lot of sprinkles.

user15026
It makes it pretty and colourful!

user15026
THey melt, so it isnt crunchy

8:40 PM
@RonanForman WEll, I just listened to it earlier when you first linked it

| Section2 = }} Yellowcake (also called urania) is a kind of uranium concentrate powder obtained from leach solutions, in an intermediate step in the processing of uranium ores. Yellowcake concentrates are prepared by various extraction and refining methods, depending on the types of ores. Typically, yellowcakes are obtained through the milling and chemical processing of uranium ore forming a coarse powder which has a pungent odor, is insoluble in water and contains about 80% uranium oxide, which melts at approximately 2878 °C (5212.4 °F). Overview The ore is first crushed to a fi...

@ShotgunNinja Something tells me that is a bit more of a deadly cake than the one I am baking

@AshleyNunn Just maybe.

@ShotgunNinja Presumably, if your yellow cake is trying to kill you, you've baked it wrong.

user15026
8:42 PM
@fbueckert This reveals so much about you, you devil of a man

I wouldn't have thought of Bacon Cakes if it weren't for a local business named Bake n' Cakes

Depends on the dose. <-- inside joke for anyone who has worked with radiation

@AshleyNunn That it takes me forever to gain rep?

user15026
@Powerlord Caramelized bacon in a cake..I could see that working

user15026
8:42 PM
@fbueckert No! That you are EVIL

@AshleyNunn Oh.
Well, you knew that already.
Your own fault if you still listen to me.

user15026
@fbueckert Yeah I am slightly aware

user15026
@fbueckert I like to be doomed I suppose :P

@ShotgunNinja uno dose trace

Caramelized bacon in a cake, with chunks of applewood bacon over the top, and maple syrup.

8:43 PM
Speaking of, don't I have more books to recommend?

@Powerlord Well, the joke is that dose, not exposure, to radiation is what kills you.

user15026
@ShotgunNinja YES

user15026
@fbueckert Yes please

@AshleyNunn Did you like "On Basilisk Station"?

user15026
@Powerlord facepalm

8:44 PM
Dose = Intensity of Exposure / Time.

@fbueckert Honor Harrington! \o/

user15026
@fbueckert I did. Wasn't like an OMG grab me book like the Obsidian ones that you linked me to, but I did like it

@Powerlord One of my favorites.

@ShotgunNinja And my reply was a really bad set of puns

@Powerlord I love trading bad jokes.

8:45 PM
@AshleyNunn There's the next book in the series, or perhaps I should just give you the first of Dresden Files and call it.

Since I essentially said one dose trace

@Powerlord facepalm

But dose and trace sound like (but aren't) the spanish words for two and three.

@Powerlord I got it, you don't have to explain.
A joke, once explained, is nothing more than an encyclopedia entry.

8:47 PM
@ShotgunNinja Yeah, there's a scientific reason and everything.

@AshleyNunn If you don't mind super long series, I can also recommend Wheel of Time.
Which I'm currently working through. Again.
For like the sixth or tenth time.

The Miles Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold are also pretty good.
Although some people dislike the first two (Shards of Honor and Barrayar, sold as a set under the title Cordelia's Honor)

user15026
@fbueckert I have tried them a few times, and I can't get into them

@AshleyNunn That's fair.
You've still got Mistborn to read, right?

user15026
@fbueckert Dresden Files?

8:50 PM
@Powerlord I concur with this statement.

user15026
@fbueckert I do. :)

@AshleyNunn A modern day wizard advertises himself as such in the yellow pages in Chicago.
As a private investigator.

user15026
@fbueckert You have my attention.

On another topic, the comic series turned webcomic turned (almost) graphic novel, Girl Genius is also quite good.

@AshleyNunn Later on, he threatens to bill God for saving the world. Again.

8:52 PM
They even turned the first part of the story into a novel now... Agatha H. and the Airship City

I can't believe I took this long to realize that the single best thing you can do if a regolar uber demoman tries to destroy your sentry with stickies is to use your wrangler to fire missiles directly below it

@badp Not bullets?
I thought stickies were destroyed by hitscan weapons.

@Powerlord hitting stickies with the wrangler is stupid hard, while the missiles just knock them off

user15026
@fbueckert Okay, I think I need to hunt these down.

(Fun fact: TF2 melee weapons are hitscan)

8:54 PM
@AshleyNunn First one is called Storm Front.
But, really. Read Mistborn.
You won't be able to put it down.

arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2013/02/… <-- This is why governments have no money

yes, that might mean a random crit sticky is randomly flung towards my position, but there's only so many things an engie can do in that situation anyway

@Powerlord It's only funny if Claptrap has to explain it

@Powerlord Because the chance that your budget might be reduced since you didn't use it all is a bad thing.

user15026
@fbueckert Kylie Chan, then Mistborn.

8:56 PM
@AshleyNunn I've been trying to get you to read those!
@Powerlord Ew, hitscan

I get to go buy some champagne after work today. That'll be somewhat pricey.

@SaintWacko Yes, ew.

@Powerlord Yes, this is wonderful

@SaintWacko yay hitscan
projectiles can be reflected
while bullets travel through corners
AT BEYOND THE SPEED OF LIGHT
that's just how awesome hitscan is!

user15026
@SaintWacko Really? I must have overlooked that somehow.

user15026
8:58 PM
I will rectify that.

user15026
@fbueckert But yummy?

@AshleyNunn Very much so.

@badp Practically speaking, hitscan isn't much faster than real bullets, which are already supersonic

@BenBrocka hitscan?

In fact Borderlands 2's extremely slow bullets are more unrealistic in a practical sense, if more accurate in a raw physics sense. Those are some crazy slow bullets
@ShotgunNinja Hitscan checks for contact immediately, effectively closing any distance instantly. So a bullet immediately hits the target

9:04 PM
@BenBrocka Giving meaning to the phrase, "Point and shoot"

So, it's a video game term, and not something from a science-fiction series?
I've just never heard the term "hitscan" before.

FAE
@AshleyNunn You haven't read Dresden Files?!

Dear Esther is the daily deal on Steam today. For anyone interested, it's definitely worth that.

user15026
@Fluttershy Totally is.

I know that in most shooters, they don't use hitscan, in favor of a progressive raycasting projectile approach.

user15026
9:06 PM
@FAE I have not.

Yeah, it's a game programming thing. In Doom your pistol and Chaingun are hitscan weapons, and your rocket launcher is a projectile weapon

lol.
@LessPop_MoreFizz dafuq.

@ShotgunNinja Scientifically Accurate Spider Man.

I could seriously do without the thumbnail there.

9:08 PM
@ShotgunNinja It was more common in older shooters, especially since practically speaking, a bullet that hits it's target in 1 frame isn't very much different from a bullet which hits it's target in 2 frames

FAE
@AshleyNunn You could blow through them pretty easily, they're quick, easy reads. Stick it out past the first 3 books. It's not super serious stuff, I bill it "light summer reading", but I really enjoy urban fantasy. It can be a bit difficult to get past some of Harry's personality, but he's still, in general, well-written, as is his supporting cast.

@FAE It does tend to get a bit more depressing later on in the series.

@LessPop_MoreFizz Wtf did I just watch....?

The stakes keep getting bigger and bigger.

user15026
@FAE Cool beans. :) I will look for them.

9:10 PM
@GraceNote It's scientifically accurate!
@Fluttershy His dick falls off.

FAE
@fbueckert Well I mean "light" as in like, the writing style is fairly easy to read.

> Stick it out past the first 3 books

@FAE That it does.

This is why I rarely take people's reading advice seriously

@BenBrocka Or game suggestions. :P
Fire Emblem is Disgaea! Just not as grindy!

9:11 PM
Pffffffffffffhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

FAE
@BenBrocka Well, the first book was written on a whim, apparently, and was partially a "proof of concept". You can tell he's still a fairly new writer in the beginning of the series, but it starts to solidify more as it goes on. I've been told that the Codex Alera series by the same author is quite well done because of how much he's improved as a writer.

@fbueckert Them's fightin' words

Although the latest FE can be pretty darn grindy; which is a change from all the previous entries in the series.

Oh snap.

@GraceNote You could've at least made it a descriptive video link. :(

9:13 PM
@BenBrocka I've played 'em both.

@fbueckert Still pretty much like saying "Metroid prime's basically Doom"

@BenBrocka Basic concept is the same; square based tactical turn-based RPG.

That's... a pretty weak approach to similarization.

And Metroid Prime = Doom. Yeah, the comparison's similar. Loses lots in the process, though.

9:14 PM
In the same way that any two games are alike in a genre of several hundred games

Characters. Levels.
Switch classes.

The comparison is only slightly more apt than saying Pac Man is the original MGS

@BenBrocka Eh. I haven't played any of MGS, so I dunno.

Disgaea and Fire Emblem fall into the same genre, which makes them a great deal more similar than Metroid Prime and Doom, which basically share a camera angle and guns.

I run through both Disgaea and Fire Emblem, and the underlying concepts are exactly the same. Mechanics differ, yes, but at the end of the day, you can move your guys X squares and attack.

9:17 PM
@fbueckert This this this this this.

They're both FPS, which is plenty of a genre for some. SRPG is just a more narrowly defined genre
And it was an intentionally facile comparison

@BenBrocka Except that Metroid isn't really an FPS, it's just a first person game in which you shoot. FPS, as defined as an actual genre, as opposed to just a perspective, is not really an accurate descriptor for a game like metroid prime.

Would you prefer I use examples of Duke Nukem Forever and Wolfenstein 3D?

@LessPop... agrees with me for once? Welp, guess I gotta get ready for the end of the world.

@fbueckert Oh, cool. I was just thinking that this world was getting annoying.

9:19 PM
Since FE introduced Casual mode, it's even more like Disgaea.

@LessPop_MoreFizz The action sections of Prime are largely similar to other FPS games. The differences may be major, but so are assorted differences between FE and Disgaea (and, generally, any two random games from a given genre)
Characters. Levels. Switch classes. == Guns. Enemies. Switch guns

I'm having trouble seeing how it's a bad comparison; they are remarkably similar.

@fbueckert I'd almost be miffed by this thing if I didn't actually much enjoy the older games for being themselves than for the formula itself. So it doesn't actually bother me.

They're hardly more similar than any two other games from the entire SRPG genre

@fbueckert Eh, we've still got a good 26 years before the end of the world. neo.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news017.html

9:22 PM
@BenBrocka True. Most SRPGs have those exact traits.
@GraceNote Happily, it's an option. No need to use it if you want to stay true to Fire Emblem.

@fbueckert Right, except you're taking everything at its base level of similarity and then taking, honestly, only one random difference and highlighting it as if it were the core difference.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, as long as we're making generic comparisons, lets compare Mega Man Battle Network to Radiant Historia
After all, they both use 3x3 battle systems! Sorta!

MM battlenetwork is just like tetris

@GraceNote I am generalizing it pretty good, yeah. I should be comparing the things that make Disgaea and FE stand out.

9:24 PM
Speaking of, are the Battle Network games any good? They seem to get more love than the classic MM/MMX series these days...

@OrigamiRobot that's a weak Dominions clone

@BenBrocka I refuse to answer that question.

@badp Eh?

@OrigamiRobot I dunno, it seemed that comparing games quasirandomly was the thing of the minute.

@OrigamiRobot We're making sweeping generalized statements about game genres. Join in!

9:25 PM
@fbueckert Essentially, I could say "Fire Emblem is like Disgaea but with far less flashy attacks or options", and I'd be no less accurate. Still would be missing the point.

Oh, I didn't know.

Let's all make fun of @OrigamiRobot for not being in on the current argument

Is @OrigamiRobot sick? I heard that he gets really confused if we make fun of him while he's sick.
It may have been a Pugsley that told me this.

@GraceNote A) I am better B) that is a lie.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star is just like Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door but with more suck and less fun

9:26 PM
@GraceNote Though flashy attacks are one of (a great deal of) Disgaea's big differentiators

user15026
@Powerlord SO TRUE

@BenBrocka The attack options really are the major thing out of that statement, moreso than the flashiness.

Diablo 3 is just copying off of Crawl

user15026
Face it everything is just a copy of pong

@GraceNote The flashiness is a huge part of the draw at first though. Everyone I've shown Disgaea to is like "Holy shit did you just drop the moon on that guy"

9:28 PM
@AshleyNunn Even this chat is! Just look at the cursor in the text box!

@BenBrocka Well, I do always recall the trailer of the very first Disgaea game.

user15026
@SaintWacko I know, right?

@AshleyNunn Pong is just a copy of that hoop and stick game. I think it was called Hoop and Stick.

@GraceNote Crazy attacks and 1 billion damage have featured in most Disgaea trailers, also Mugen Souls' trailer

@BenBrocka More the tag line, I were thinking.

How is this "no research effort"

Q: What are the main differences between Bit.Trip Runner and Bit.Trip Runner 2?

RetrosaurWhat are the differences? Besides the graphics changing, what are the main features of Runner 2 that separate it from Bit.Trip Runner?

Yeah, "no research effort" because google fails to do anything at all.

9:35 PM
@Retrosaur Or perhaps, since they're two different games, there's no usefulness to the question.

In my opinion, asking about the differences between a game and its sequel is a poor question.

Well, you could feasibly just play the games and determine the difference for yourself.

@fbueckert What......two different games I don't understand

@Retrosaur What's the point of the question? Who is it helping?

Also, generally speaking, a direct sequel will usually list its improvements over its precursor in its marketing media.

9:36 PM
People wanted to know whether to buy Borderlands 2
or it was just a rehash of Borderlands 1
so they asked what were the differences between the two

Is that a question on the site?

same goes for Torchlight and Torchlight II

@OrigamiRobot yeah it is.

brb, downvoting

@OrigamiRobot If it is, I can't find it.

9:38 PM
@BenBrocka Why do we need a reason to make fun of @OrigamiRob exactly?

@LessPop_MoreFizz ಠ_ಠ
@fbueckert Me neither

Q: Whats the difference between Team Fortress 2 and Team Fortress 2 Beta?

corrodedIn Steam I haven't played TF2 for a while and when I loaded Steam there was an available game for download: Team Fortress 2 Beta. I know this sounds stupid...but what's the diff between the two? Should I download the Beta version when I already have a ton of achievements on the other? Or is this ...

10 votes.

@Retrosaur Same game, dude.
That said, it's still a bad question.

@Retrosaur Same Game Different Edition != Sequel.

What he said.

9:39 PM
Great question! This question saved my marriage. — Shotgun Ninja 25 secs ago

So I'm asking what's the difference between Runner 2 and Runner 1 so I can make an educated choice when I want to buy one or the other. I don't see any problem with that.

Actually, now that I've read it, it's a legit question.
@Retrosaur Arqade is not for shopping advice. Ask for a comparison between two different versions of the same thing.
Like Baldur's Gate and the Enhanced Edition.

He has a point, though his explanation leaves much to be desired.

Asking about differences between Game X and it's sequel is essentially, "Bigger! Better! More!"

The rule of thumb for TF2 vs. TF2 Beta is "don't use the Beta unless you're helping Valve test something"
in this week's case, you're helping them test the conversion of TF2 from the old Steam CDN and GCF files to the new SteamPipe CDN and VPK files.

9:41 PM
@ShotgunNinja I'm failing to see it, then.

Also, bacon.

@Powerlord Indeed.

@Retrosaur If the problem your question is trying to solve is "Which one should I buy?", it's probably not a good fit for SE.

@OrigamiRobot Alrighty then.

And your latest one is also not good.

9:43 PM
It's not for shopping advice...

And sorta sounds like a deliberate troll.

Deliberate troll? I've actually wondered whether there's a difference
between fullscreen and windowed. Unless some other expert here knows better...

Gotta buy 'em all, Buyemon!

@fbueckert That one seems fine to me.

@Retrosaur One... runs in a window and the other runs full screen?

9:44 PM
I've always though that
if you run it in a window
the display still has to show the desktop and refresh it
so the performance would be somewhat lower
than one running fullscreen.
Of course, I never confirmed it, because there's no way I could test that out myself

@Retrosaur It does and it is lower than one running fullscreen.
Although it should have less of an impact on systems that use desktop compositing

@Retrosaur You... can't run a game fullscreen and in a window and measure FPS?

Then answer my question. Show me some sort of proof somewhere. Because I want to get the most outta my computer.
@JasonBerkan My game runs so slowly it's hard to tell the difference

Oh wait windowed vs fullscreen

@OrigamiRobot Eh. Shows zero research.

9:45 PM
Not borderless window vs fullscreen
Nevermind.

user15026
@fbueckert I am inclined to agree.

How is this no "research"

@fbueckert I misread.

Sorry, I'm not a scientist, I can't run these tests on my very whim

1 min ago, by Retrosaur
Of course, I never confirmed it, because there's no way I could test that out myself

9:46 PM
@SaintWacko Do you have your dice yet?

There are tools for measuring FPS.

@fbueckert It was just a theory. Oh, okay like what.

borderless window is still slower than fullscreen because the graphics card doesn't have an exclusive lock on the display

FRAPS? I don't have that.

We are happy to help anyone and everyone. But you have to at least make an effort to help yourself.

9:46 PM
@Retrosaur Start Minecraft and press F3?

@fbueckert Minecraft is unplayable for me

Most games have a way to display FPS on the screen.

@JasonBerkan not Borderlands 2, not Cogs, not Rome: Total War

Q: How does Temple Run 2 measure "Life-Time" Coins?

SSH ThisI am playing a lot of Temple Run 2, but one thing is bothering me about the game. The following picture is a screenshot of my objectives and my "Midas Touch" green progress bar isn't filling up at all! But my Gold Miner is almost finished (I have about 400,000 coins). Could this be a bug? One ...

@Retrosaur You've mentioned a single tool. Did you LOOK for any FPS tools before asking?

9:47 PM
@Retrosaur What do you have for a computer - a C64?

@fbueckert fixed

@kalina Yay!

@JasonBerkan "What kinda chip you got in there, a Dorito?"

@Powerlord If you could power your computer with Doritos, that'd be somewhat awesome.
2

@JasonBerkan A shittop.

9:49 PM
@fbueckert Except I'd constantly wreck my computer by eating it.

@JasonBerkan True.

To be fair Minecraft may run on just about anything, but it runs like crap on just about anything too, at least with high view distance and such

From a fast search, the free version of FRAPS allows you to measure FPS.

It's the Crysis of indie games

@fbueckert superuser would end up with questions like "Which flavour gives more GHz, cheese or original cool?"

9:50 PM
@kalina And !SCIENCE! would be done!
Combining science and Doritos.

and then Walkers would change the recipe

This sounds like a life plan.

@BenBrocka True. You can bring a computer to its knees with a far enough render distance.

@OrigamiRobot you are now on my hate list

It's literally rotten food.

9:53 PM
@OrigamiRobot you are now on my kill on sight list

Meh, I already assumed I was on all those lists.

@OrigamiRobot If we were still friends, I would ask you why you considered yourself to be on such lists

Besides, you'd clearly want Cool Ranch thermal paste.

Because you've always hated me.

@OrigamiRobot this is not true, it's only in the last few minutes that I've truly learned that our friendship is not to be
when you openly admitted that my one true addiction is gross

9:56 PM
@TrentHawkins We could always add a couple drops of Da Bomb and see how that affects CPU performance.

@TrentHawkins Mmm...
Side note: A week from today, Taco Bell is going to start selling Tacos with Cool Ranch flavored shells.

@OrigamiRob You realize "sour" is one of the basic tastes, right? It doesn't necessarily mean "rotten".

@fbueckert you kiddin'? add to the heat?!

@StrixVaria I have an opening on my friendslist if you want it, I won't make you apply for it
