Wait, there's a scientific documentary narrated by STEPHEN HAWKING and BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH?

@Arperum That is totally Windows' fault. It's a terrible system to develop most languages on, because its terminal support is awful. Terminal support shouldn't be awful, just because you want to hide the terminal from the average user.
Even powershell is awful. Better, but awful.

@ToxicFrog I was with you until you mentioned C. If they have problems running console applications, I'd hate to see what they do when trying to call the compiler.

@Arperum yeah, but windows is openly hostile to the idea of running command line programs and a lot of tutorials etc. have you writing command line programs
@Powerlord with C, usually what happens is that someone recommends an IDE, they write the program in that, it compiles, then they run it (or tell the IDE to) and GOTO CONFUSION
You can get surprisingly far without knowing how to invoke the compiler or, indeed, what a compiler is

Q: How does Nuclear Reactor packet output work?

EnderI've seen several Nuclear Reactor video tutorials, and they all seem to use a HV Transformer to allow their reactor to safely output its power to an MFSU. However my reactor has no transformer and safely outputs to a MFSU. What exactly determines the reactor's EU packet output so that I know when...

Q: Why does my rapid fire TNT cannon always explode?

Minecraft GamerWhen I watch that video on YouTube, it shows you how to make a rapid fire tnt cannon. I made it, but when I activate it, it just explodes and the water flow out! I did that in survival mode, so I lost all the stuff to build that cannon because it exploded. DAMN!!! Heres the video: Rapid Fire TNT ...

@ToxicFrog Incidentally, this is why Visual Studio redirects console output to its own console.
(or it does with .NET languages, I haven't checked C/C++)

8:04 PM
@ToxicFrog True, windows doesn't like command line at all. Too similar to DOS or something, so it is seen as old and thus drama. (For another example of this rule: see @Sterno )

Everything in is now garbage that can be closed/deleted.

@Powerlord C/C++ opens an actual console where the program runs.

@Powerlord pretty sure it does with C++ as well unless you tell it not to. (It doesn't officially support plain C, IIRC, although it does have half-assed C89 support)
But it's been a mercifully long time since I used msdev for anything.

ferdiCan anyone tell me what online games bots are used for? A friend of mine asked me to develop some bots for knight-online, but I really do not have any idea about the game, and the bots. besides "it doesn't fit the current retagging exercise"?

@badp It's primarily opinion based (as the close reason says) and it has 157 views in 2 years. Hardly valuable.

There was also a too broad vote as well when I VTC'd

@OrigamiRobot This is the most meaningless sentence I've ever seen you post.

THERES A SAMMICH IN MAH HEAD
How bout now?

8:12 PM
I am not fucking kidding.

Easy, there.

When are subjective questions allowed? When they're useful. Is this one useful? Obviously not.
I'm not sure what more meaning you want.

sigh

The question is too broad and opinion based. This is because beyond basic practice, there are many strategies that you can employ to become better at online play, and they vary greatly depending on the game. There are personal preferences that need to be accounted for, general playstyles of the other players, etc., which means it's next to impossible to write a solid answer that covers everything.

@OrigamiRobot We don't define utility by size of audience, though. Else, we'd not have questions about very old games few people play. Lacking usefulness can kill a subjective question, yes, but views isn't going to support that campaign.

8:16 PM
There's a fine line between "subjective" and "Hey, this could get multiple answers that would all be correct, surely this has to be burned!"
We're hitting the wrong side of that line ever too often.

@SevenSidedDie I'm not sure how nobody looking at the question doesn't prove it isn't useful.

That said, I haven't looked at the question we're talking about, but the title implies that this, too, is a case of hitting the wrong side of the line.

@OrigamiRobot That's why I drew the analogy to our policy on old/rare/unpopular games. I.e., we explicitly do not care about popularity. It doesn't matter for utility measures either, because 157 people could have been helped, or only 1, or none. The views are not relevant data.
Looking at it another way: that is an awful title for SEO, which views also measures, so there is confounding factors which eliminates views as a valid metric of usefulness even if views are relevant to usefulness.

@SevenSidedDie Questions about a specific game are limited in potential views by those who play that game. This question applies to a very very large audience and yet still has very few views.

@FEichinger I would argue in this case that the question could get multiple partial answers that would all be correct. We want users to be able to readily give complete and concise answers, and if we have the situation outlined, that's unlikely to be possible, and is an indication that the question may be too broad.

8:19 PM
@SevenSidedDie I can see where @OrigamiRobot is coming from. Questions that are on the iffy line can easily use the views as a measure of its utility.
Since that's the whole point of Arqade; useful questions.

@fbueckert No. Nononono. No. No. Just no. No. Never. Not ever.

@fbueckert When even the iffiness is disputed though, views recedes in utility as a deciding factor.

If we've gotten barely 150 views on it in two years, that doesn't strike me as something all that useful.

@fbueckert popular*

@MBraedley As I said, I haven't looked at the question in detail. It just looked a lot like it and I figured I'd point that out.

8:21 PM
@SevenSidedDie You might be disputing the iffiness. I ain't. I called it too broad, because that's what it is.

It's not just views. It's views compared to audience.

@fbueckert Again, views are actually a direct measure of discoverability. Using a bit of data for something it doesn't actually measure isn't usually valid.

@fbueckert Okay, again: No. "Useful" is not determined (or, frankly, even influenced) by views, period.
Just because nobody reads that thing doesn't mean it has to disappear.

Or rather, the intersection of discoverability and interest and popularity and search engine rankings and ...

@FEichinger Maybe not for you. I don't know where I stand on it. I'm just saying it can be seen as a measure of utility.

8:22 PM
I'd rather have vacant questions sitting around than burning everything to the ground that a handful of people deems "unworthy".

@FEichinger See, I'm the opposite. I don't want generic questions kicking around.

There is absolutely no harm in keeping that question.

@FEichinger That's a perfectly fine reason for it to disappear. That's what this site is about.

@OrigamiRobot This is relevant, and ironically, written by you:

Nice to see somebody abusing their star removal powers.

8:25 PM
Are we seriously doing this?

@SevenSidedDie That is about up/down voting and not applicable here.

@SevenSidedDie Upvotes and downvotes have nothing to do with close and delete votes.
They're two different things.

@FEichinger I was trying to indicate agreement with you through a star but someone keeps clearing them.

I am not entirely sure what @GnomeSlice is.

That's the third time.
@GraceNote beatbuddy.com

8:25 PM
@OrigamiRobot Delete votes are also only on content. If the content can't be used to justify the vote, the vote shouldn't be cast. Views are not content.

Clearing stars because we pretend they're passive-aggressive starring and this is all so evil? Well, I'll see you guys tomorrow, this is getting ridiculous.

@SevenSidedDie The content is too broad and primarily opinion based.

@GnomeSlice I see.

(I am also not arguing that this particular question is/isn't worth deleting. I am arguing only on the views thing.)

Can whoever is doing that please stop clearing stars.
You just cleared four stars on stuff you shouldn't have.

8:26 PM
@OrigamiRobot Yeah, and that's a fine stance. It doesn't depend on metadata.

@FEichinger In lieu of being able to star this, "I agree with this".

Q: Where and how do you download MCedit?

Minecraft GamerOne time I saw my friend playing minecraft and he was using mcedit. Where do you download that?

@Lazers Gah.

@fbueckert Indeed.

Also, I am and will continue to clear passive aggressive stars. If you want to show agreement, say so. Stop clogging up the star list.

8:28 PM
@Lazers Wow, I really wanted to LMGTFY that.

A little google searching is your friend. Not that we don't mind helping, but there's a limit to how much thinking we should be doing for you.

Stars on something you don't agree with aren't 'passive aggressive' they're just agreeing with the other viewpoint.

@fbueckert And yet, this is a valid, on-topic question... *facepalm*

@SevenSidedDie Believe you me, I'd burn it in a heartbeat if it wasn't.
It's about as inane as it gets.

I'd clear the stars on the me3-multiplayer tag thing if a mod would JUST DO IT PLEASE I BEG YOU

8:30 PM
@fbueckert Yeah. Facepalm is directed at life in general, not this debate. It just highlights how wide the gap is between valid questions and questions we just don't like.
@OrigamiRobot I think those are celebratory firework stars.

I'm not doing that, by the way

You couldn't be anyway, since your own message was starred.

Is there a FAQ that explains what stars are technically for? Like we have with downvotes and etc?

@SevenSidedDie "Star this if you think it is interesting/useful for the transcript"

@SevenSidedDie Whatever floats your boat, really.
Whoever starred that entire section, quit it. I will keep cancelling them.

8:32 PM
@GraceNote Ah! Tooltips are not the most useful on a scrolling object...

I come back only to see a slowly vanishing list of stars on the right side

Oh, by the way @GraceNote:

You can use it because something was witty that you think others should see, that something made you laugh so you figure others should see, or that you think is a valid point that you determine others should see. Lots of things.
@GnomeSlice Wow, Suguri collection as a bonus item? Huh.

@GraceNote Is that good?
I know nothing about any of those games.

@GnomeSlice I have little interest in anything else besides Hatoful Boyfriend, and I already own the Suguri games. Twice.

Gotta go build a cat tree now. @SevenSidedDie, you're in charge.

Hatoful Boyfriend is the best of things and you should get it.

@OrigamiRobot Oh crap

@GraceNote Ah. Well, unfortunately, you have to pick at least two.
@GraceNote Sell me on it in three lines or less.

8:34 PM
@GraceNote Did @GnomeSlice hack your account?

It's a game wherein you play a girl in a school of pigeons. Oh, and one partridge.
No you are not a pigeon. Or a partridge, for that matter.

FAE
@GraceNote This is the game I'm getting that bundle for.

That sounds... like not something I would want to play.
@FAE You only have to pick two, if you like.

@SevenSidedDie Don't worry, being in charge is not hard. Don't give @Wipqozn the keys to anything and keep @GnomeSlice off the counters.

@FAE It is every good reason to get it.

@GraceNote I don't get it.

@OrigamiRobot Technically, @Wipqozn already has the keys.

@GnomeSlice Point is you should get it.

@fbueckert Yea and we see what a mistake that was.

@OrigamiRobot It's true.

@GraceNote Done. You'd better be right about this $1.50 I just spent.

BonziBuddy was an on-screen "intelligent" software agent from Bonzi Software, released in 1999 and discontinued in 2004. The official website stated that the software would help a user surf the Internet by using Microsoft Agent technology. In 1999, the software used a green parrot called Peedy licensed from Microsoft, and in later versions, Bonzi Software made their own fictional character, a purple gorilla. The on-screen agent would tell jokes, facts, manage downloading using his download manager, sing songs and other functions. The user would command the character by right clicking on ...
THat dude.

@FAE If that Higurashi is actually the original VN, it might be worth a look but Ionno. Most folk I know liked it though. Absolutely everything else appears to be shmups and I don't get into the habit of recommending shmups I don't know about.

8:40 PM
@Wipqozn I like your gravatar alot.

@SevenSidedDie It was made by the artistic genius known as @badp.

@Wipqozn needs a mecha turtle as a gravatar.

@GraceNote BenBrocka said something about HellSinker being extremely complex and interesting.

@Wipqozn I approve of alots in general. This one is particularly good.

@GnomeSlice I have no idea what I just watched, but I liked the music.
@SevenSidedDie It's an Alot of Tortoise.

@FAE Being a Mecha Game, Armed Seven was enough to make me actually run the trailer video but I then immediately found myself beyond uninterested so that's how that kinda went.

@GraceNote That game looks horrible

@GnomeSlice I don't even know what of any songs I have count as bass music.
@GnomeSlice Hence "beyond uninterested"

8:44 PM
@GraceNote Egads, Hatoful Boyfriend is like 121 MB and Groupees is not compatible with download managers

So, now that I'm getting a kitten, what are fun toys to pick up for them?
I'm thinking a laser pen is good.

@fbueckert Pokemon.

@GraceNote I don't suppose you'd know anything about this game would you?

@GraceNote A kitten-sized Poke ball? I bet I could find one.

@GnomeSlice Not at all.
@fbueckert I actually meant you should get it a copy of the game.

8:45 PM
@GraceNote Ah. It looks interesting. I'm just going to grab it and get to it later.
It seems shmuppy, but not in the way that I usually hate

Don't grab too much stuff yeesh.

@GraceNote I'm not sure why or how that would work.

@fbueckert The "why" is because when your kitten becomes the world's greatest Pokemon master, you can laugh at all the inferior humans. The "how" is your job to figure out.

FAE
@GraceNote Are the eXceed games good?

8:47 PM
@GraceNote I'm thinking a double backflip is the height of my kitten training ambitions.

@FAE See "I don't get into the habit of recommending shmups I don't know about"
@fbueckert That sounds very much like not very ambitious at all.

@GraceNote Maybe ninja pounce all guests. That might be fun.

@FAE One of my online friends was pretty excited about them, he seems to really like them.

FAE
@GraceNote Ah okies.
@BenBrocka Have you played the eXceed games at all?

Why are you reading news about Iran.
Oh wait.

8:58 PM
He's apparently able to decline the offer and instead go to court, and was able to choose his own church but that still doesn't make it okay.
I'm Atheist. There's no Atheist church.
That doesn't even make sense.

@Sconibulus Of course it isn't. It's a direct violation of the separation of church and state.

@Wipqozn There's Unitarian at least. If dumb stuff like that is going to happen, at least there's a church that likes and approves of atheists.

so if I was him I'd be forced to either take my chances in court, or have some religion forced on me?

@Wipqozn Or use the choice to get a brand new judge since that's pretty bad.
And probably grounds for a mistrial.

@fbueckert Sounds like this guy has made a reputation for doing this.

Everson v. Board of Education, 330 U.S. 1 (1947) was a landmark decision of the United States Supreme Court which applied the Establishment Clause in the country's Bill of Rights to State law . I also own a Pastafarian bible

@fbueckert It's spam.
The """"" makes it obvious.
Putting things around a link to draw attention to it is a common spam tactic.

For anyone else interested in Chroma Squad.

9:22 PM
@SaintWacko There's a bible now? I guess I shouldn't be that surprised, but I'm having a hard time imagining what could fill it.

@SevenSidedDie It is awesomely hilarious

@fbueckert Now I'm actually looking forward to it.

@Wipqozn I should be getting the beta soon-ish.
It comes with giant robots and customizable equipment and everything!

I've come to learn that I really, really like team building based games.
Like Pokemon, Etrian Odyessy, XCOM, et cetear.
I just love making teams/parties.
I think I spend as much time planning out my team in Pokemon as I do playing the game.

@SevenSidedDie I'm happy to defer to your judgement in this case. I gave him the benefit of a doubt.
@Wipqozn It even has different classes!

@fbueckert Yeah, that's made me excited.

Somebody wants this question reopening but it looks like a horrible question:

Am I missing something obvious?

9:28 PM
@fbueckert I gave it a spam flag and it instantly removed it, so I'm guessing two others already thought so.

@SevenSidedDie Doesn't it take six spam flags?

@fbueckert Yes.

@fbueckert Three for spam last I knew. Offensive is six.

@SevenSidedDie Oh that might be right.

@Wipqozn I'll let you know when I get it.

9:29 PM
Although I find it hard to believe it got to -11 with only 3 spam flags.

I duno, during my mornings it feels like anything spam related that gets linked in chat disappears way too fast
it could well be 3

@kalina This happened:

@MBraedley what's wrong with this one?

we don't usually have 6 actively active people people during the mornings

And the rest of the discussion that followed.
@Wipqozn Isn't flagging a higher-rep privilege than downvoting?

interesting

9:31 PM
@SevenSidedDie I'm pretty sure you can flag as soon as you make an account.

It is primarily opinion based
It would probably be acceptable if it was about a specific game
but it only cites games as examples rather than being about a specific game

@SevenSidedDie I can flag on sites where I have 101 rep, but I can't downvote until 125.

I do agree that "it's only had X views in Y years" is a poor reason to delete it though

@kalina I don't know that it is. Judging by the non-subjective answer, I think that defeats any argument that it can only be answered with opinion, which is what the close reason is for.

@SevenSidedDie flag is 15 rep

9:32 PM
@Wipqozn Ah, I've got it backwards. People giving it the benefit of the doubt, then.

@SevenSidedDie let me re-read
that is a pretty nice answer
it would be a shame to delete the question and lose that answer

@kalina I think it might be one of those borderline ones that simply isn't a good question, but can be safely left open. Especially with a good answer redeeming the low-quality question.

Q: Installing Steam Game from previous pc to a Mac

angelaI had a PC laptop and had the SIMS 3 installed on it through Steam. I figure that mac and pc have different platforms, but is there any way to have the game installed on my mac?

It's my reopen vote, aside.

if that question isn't "primarily opinion based", it's certainly too broad

9:35 PM
I'm not 100% certain it deserves reopening, but I can leave that to other voters, yay. I wouldn't have voted it closed.

but that answer is very concise
well that is the purpose of the functionality
it does need a tag though

It might be too broad. I know answers don't save questions, but I think the answer does suggest it might not be as broad as it seems.

and @badp is right, it doesn't fit in with the retagging exercise, but I think it's unfair to categorise it as 'this' retagging exercise since it was the multiplayer tag that was removed and that was removed as per last year's consensus

Yeah, tagging is a problem.

that makes it sound like our current efforts are to blame, when in fact we've mainly got rid of really bad tags
that is pretty much going to be the only question of that type that ever survives, if it survives
saying that, this one has similarities:

that's pretty much it out of the questions
the rest will probably end up getting deleted

9:48 PM
@kalina We do have a bunch of "skill improvement" questions lying around that seem to have passed community acceptance. Maybe we need a tag for that subject.

WHY IS IT SO HARD TO FIND A PAIR OF BOOTS I LIKE!?

@SevenSidedDie the problem is, the tag for that subject would be essentially
and that is a can of worms I am not opening
EVER

@kalina I'm thinking of something more focused than that (if possible), yeah. Anything that big is going to be a problem.

not only would it attract so many questions we don't want, we've also probably got a reasonable number of questions deleted specifically for asking for that kind of info
