another thing I never do -> get into conversations about any technology with real life friends

Ids
@fbueckert Yeah, exactly. That is also why I totally dislike the whole "people should love you for who you are" dating advice. It stops people from getting outside of their comfort zone. (Not that I'm good at that).
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Lorre this is the guy behind a few of the more popular shows nowadays.
@pixel That only leads to one thing. You having to fix their computers ;)

exactly

@Ids not when you are a dev. :P
"Cables? Whats that sorcery?"

plus I hate having such conversations with people who think that typing google into google will crash the internet

@pixel Get some less stupid friends.

Ids
5:05 PM
@PatrickStalder that has not been my experience. ;)

@RonanForman I know pretty much everybody of my age in this particular geographic location

@Ids you're not using the developer stereotype for its full effect then.

@Ids It's also called, "Hey, guys, I'm a geek, sure. But I'm still going to charge you $40 an hour to fix your computer."

@pixel You live in a village I take it.

yes

5:10 PM
@Ids Usually, in cases like this, people who assume you can fix a computer equate the same skillset to re-wiring their home theater system.
One thing I've learned is that if you charge someone for fixing their stuff, they value it MUCH more than if you just went, "Yeah, ok, I'll fix that for you, no problem."

I would rather just not do it in the first place, playing dumb is so much easier

@fbueckert If you say it's easy they assume it is?

@pixel How long does it take until the Fusang grind stops hurting?

@RonanForman If I say it's easy, it'll probably only cost them $40. If they complain that's too much, I tell them to take it to Geek Squad, where they'll charge them at least $100.

@PatrickStalder depends on your spec in fairness, I still get roflstomped by groups of 3+ but I'm a healer so I can't kill stuff

5:13 PM
I meant that they'll take your word on how much it's worth, so if you do it for free...

Speaking of Geek Squad, their solution to anything even remotely complicated is, "Reinstall Windows".
@RonanForman Exactly.

what is geek squad

They'll come whining to you about the slightest little thing.

@pixel 75% of the enemies I encounter kill me in LESS than 4 seconds.

Reminds me of an old friend of mine who used to do IT stuff. People would ask him to fix their computers and his response was usually along the lines of, "I already hate my job, so why the <expletive> would I want to do my job for free?"

5:14 PM
Apparently Apple is introducing a new file system where you can't put folders in folders. You can only go 1 level deep. I guess no one will be doing any Java developing on a mac any time after that.

I hate pc shops, they charge far too much and have no clue what they're talking about.

@PatrickStalder sounds like you need more hp/resistances

I was once told that android devices have 'their own version of IE'

@StrixVaria Wait. What? Is that some kind of joke?

5:15 PM
Now, if you charge them $40/hour, and asking you even one question starts the clock, they'll be much more circumspect about asking you questions.

@StrixVaria WTF?

And that's my personal tech rate, for people. For companies, I charge an absolute minimum of $90/hour.

@StrixVaria Ah. I would guess that it's something that will be restricted to Finder. You'd probably be able to go as many layers deep as you wanted to from Terminal.

@fbueckert I've got a friend who is constantly complaining that people ask him for too much, but when I suggest he should maybe say no he stops complaining.

Still... yet another reason that I really wish I could stray away from Macs at the office.

5:17 PM
@RESPAWN No clue what these mean and no interest to learn.
I just thought I'd point out that, obviously, Java as a language can't work with that restriction.

@RonanForman I understand wanting to be helpful. But people WILL take advantage of you if you can't say no. It's a hard lesson to learn.

I know.

@Pixel Probably. But is it worth to get hp/resistances from a PvE perspective?

@StrixVaria Haha. Essentially, I'm guessing that it will be a limitation at the user interface level only. Otherwise, they'd seriously break OSX.

@StrixVaria Substitute Explorer for Finder and DOS prompt for Terminal and you have the Windows equivalent.

5:18 PM
@PatrickStalder staying alive is staying alive. Thing is, you don't need to gear for it you're a DPS
@PatrickStalder getting level 10 in all talismans skills gives you resists and hp

@JasonBerkan Either way, that's a stupid system. A single folder layer means you'll get folder names like "Program files-system32-drivers-etc"

Ids
Some people are also pretty unfriendly when you are fixing their computer. I was techsupporting and discovered that the router was broken. So she bought a new one, and somebody else installed it. Her reaction: "He could fix my internet". Yeah thanks... A well.

@fbueckert Agreed. I'm with RESPAWN - it must be a GUI thing only. OS X is unix underneath it all - you can't just get rid of nested folders / directories.

@pixel Ok I thought so. Staying alive as DPS should be skill not gear IMO. And yes I already upgraded the skills to level 10.

@PatrickStalder bare in mind that a lot of people in Fusang are already full QL10 epic

Q: how do you get back to skuldafn on xbox 360?

lukeI've just realized I need to get the dragon priest mask from this quest, but like others, thought I could go back and get it later, I have an Xbox, is there anyway I can go back there that won't affect my game play much?

Delete, please.
He edited out the duplicate system text.

@JasonBerkan Still, GUI thing or not, it's a change that's going to make my life more difficult as an admin with Macs in my domain. sigh

@pixel Fairly high possibility that they are. I mean you simply can't see the difference 90% of the times. But I'll get there too, soon™.

What faction are you?

@StrixVaria Lol. What about music libraries?

@pixel Illuminati.

5:23 PM
@PatrickStalder just follow the swarm and cheese it for a bit

@pixel How else could I aquire 232 Black Marks :P

;)

@RESPAWN If it's really a "file system", then it will affect everything. It's at a lower level than any UI components.

@StrixVaria Wee! Apple will break the OS completely. Welcome to the post-Jobs era.

They will probably sell you iFolders for 10 bucks a piece.

5:26 PM
os uses filesystem, os != filesystem. it's possibly optional

We were promised jet packs. http://bit.ly/LKvTTt
Good read, if anyone is interested.

@GnomeSlicE We have jetpacks, they just suck.

Q: Does blizzard actually slow enemies down?

Jim ThioSome runes like grasping chill slow enemies down. What about the others? My main use of blizzard is not really to damage enemy but to slow them down for poison hydra. The tooltips doesn't say it snares at all. It says it does cold damage it doesn't say it slows enemies. If it does by how much?

user2334
Jetpacks don't suck: they're the only way to fly in space

user2334
The Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) is an astronaut propulsion unit which was used by NASA on three space shuttle missions in 1984. The MMU allowed the astronauts to perform untethered EVA spacewalks at a distance from the shuttle. The MMU was used in practice to retrieve a pair of faulty communications satellites, Westar VI and Palapa B2. Following the third mission the unit was retired from use. A smaller successor, the Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER), was first flown in 1994, and is intended for emergency use only. Overview The unit featured redundancy to protect against failure o...

5:28 PM
@MarkTrapp They suck on earth.

@RonanForman Gravity's a bitch. :)

user2334
The Rocketeer begs to differ

@MarkTrapp The Rocketeer is fiction. :P We have yet to develop the technology to tell gravity to get bent.

user2334
Tell that to the tier 13 technology tree in Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri!
2

user2334
Dang SMAC had a lot of techs.

5:33 PM
@MarkTrapp Indeed. It's why I liked it so much.

@MarkTrapp Jetpacks designed for Spacewalk wouldn't even move you on Earth.

Is there an equivalent to eyefinity on nvidia cards?

@StrixVaria That's true. But you can't realistically do such a thing at the OS level without causing serious issues with compatibility

@GnomeSlicE I've seen series extend beyond the intended trilogy.

user2334
@pixel nVidia Surround?

user2334
5:35 PM
I think that's pretty much the same

kk

@StrixVaria I think this article is using the term file system very loosely here.

its just I have three monitors but I get bad frame rates with my current card so I'm looking for an upgrade

@Koviko The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, for example, sure.
But I'm pretty sure the big-budget dark knight films are done.

@MarkTrapp: Sorry to ruin your day, but I managed to get your favourite scfi.se question closed via the magic of flagging.

5:38 PM
> Play in real time in an action movie and defeat all your enemies in this innovative beat'em up.
...Sounds interesting...

@GnomeSlicE They said the same thing about Heavy Rain.

user2334
@Wipqozn Wow, that question withstood like a half-dozen close attempts, at least two SE employees stepping in, myself as a mod, and the test of time. You're like the close vote whisperer

@MarkTrapp They probably knew to respect my tortoise wisdom.
I also have the ability to down vote on SciFi now. Something tells me I'll be using that ability a lot.

Ids
@Wipqozn Then you will probably not have that ability for long ;)

@Ids Down votes on questions are free!

Ids
5:41 PM
@Wipqozn Score!

Which is the problem with SciFI. They're good at giving answers, just not at asking questions.

user2334
Yeah. It's quite hard to grind the Electorate badge if you actually care how you use your votes

@GnomeSlicE Assuming Man of Steel works out. Which I hope it does.
Finally, a good Superman movie.

user2334
Superman II would like a word.

@MarkTrapp I didn't say "decent." :P

user2334
5:42 PM
Superman II was enchanting!

And for the Dark Knight to be finished saddens me. We just barely met catwoman. We never met The Penguin or Harley Quinn and Robin... well, we don't have spoiler tags here.

@Koviko Uh? What's that have to do with the Dark Knight films lol.

@GnomeSlicE Exactly. Until it does, I am a sad panda.

user2334
Batman frequently crosses over into Superman stuff. If Man of Steel works out, I know there were talks about doing a Batman and Superman crossover movie

Justice League, anyone?
I wonder is the Flash is movie-worthy.

user2334
5:45 PM
Didn't he have a movie?

user2334
I guess not. Huh.

I mean with the type of drama we've come to see in modern superhero movies.
The good ones, at least.

What I want to know is where Spiderman was in The Avengers. It was in New York and everything.
I guess he was busy filming.

Haha

5:47 PM
@GnomeSlicE apparently he was tied down by a Sony (?) copyright

Spider-Man, possibly Marvel's coolest superhero
And he isn't in Marvel's biggest grossing movie

@Koviko deadpool

If not for reddit, I wouldn't even know who Deadpool is
And from what I've seen, he breaks the fourth wall too much to have a movie.

anti heroes are always better than heroes

Like Hulk? :D
No matter what anyone says, I love the Hulk movies

5:49 PM
@Koviko Hulk in the Avengers was awesome

@Koviko The games have been largely terrible though.

big green guy with rage problems? sounds like a good story to me

@GnomeSlicE Seems that way. I haven't touched them because they always cost too much for the reviews they get.
@fbueckert Hell yeah.

Hulk is much fun in UMVC3 :P

Only Iron Man came close to his awesome
And that's because he's RDJ

5:50 PM
@pixel That bullets bounce off of, and the madder he gets, the more invincible he gets? I have trouble trying to figure out HOW you could make a good game out of that.

@fbueckert games converted from other visual media nearly always suck

@fbueckert Diablo 2 did it. Dynasty Warriors did it. Left 4 Dead did it.
You lay a path of destruction
And occasionally fight something worthy of your time.

@fbueckert Name it Hulk of Duty.

@PatrickStalder Heh. That would be more amusing.

I heard 'Hulk: Ultimate Destruction' was actually pretty fun.
Sandboxy.

5:51 PM
25-kill streak: Hulk out.

@fbueckert regarding how 'hulk' could have worked in a computer game, see 'prototype' as point of reference

@MarkTrapp Damn, I thought they'd have that done in a Flash.

It'd be like God of War style finishingmove mechanics
But every finisher is HULK SMASH

@pixel Prototype sucked. It was crazy one-dimensional.

@fbueckert story sucked, gameplay worked well

5:53 PM
@fbueckert I only saw previews for that. It looked pretty.
It was bad, though?

@pixel When the entire game consists of, "Find target. Kill it. Rinse and repeat" the game is no good.

@fbueckert that's still a story issue, we already covered the story sucked...

@pixel That's a gameplay issue.

@fbueckert Assassin's Creed comes to mind...

well I'm seeing gameplay as the way the game handled, it handled well
story being the bit that consists of 'find X, kill X'
the pretence behind the game was weak, the gameplay itself was pretty solid

user2334
5:54 PM
@Wipqozn ಠ_ಠ

@Koviko That's by Ubicrap. The only thing they published recently that I've played is Anno, and that's because I've enjoyed the series far before they ever started publishing it.

@fbueckert I can't attach the word "crap" to the company that made Beyond Good & Evil

@pixel It's like evil GTA/Spiderman.
75% of abilities you unlock were to help you kill faster.

I don't see the problem with that in general

Sounds like a lack of challenge.
I mean, is it really hard to die?

5:57 PM
The 'Hulk' game based on one of the movies was horrible. Horrible. You just run through various linear areas picking up things and swinging them at hulkdogs and other things until they break, then you pick up new things. And it was WAY too easy to die.

in prototype? reasonably hard yeah

A 'realistic' HULK game would be boring as shit because you'd be indestructible.

@Koviko Did they develop it, or just publish it?

They should make a Hulk game more like Postal, where you have to either avoid getting angry and hulking, or find a way to get pissed and Hulk out on someone.

@fbueckert If you can go by that logic for giving them credit for the good, why not for the bad?

6:02 PM
And either way, ever since their advent of, "We're going to screw over PC players by porting things over late and crappily, and, oh yeah, with always on DRM", I've tried to stay away from anything they release.

Ports annoy me to no end... ugh.
It wasn't until this year that my PC was able to run GTA4 on Xbox settings.

porting games is bad when they port from inferior technology to a pc

Yet it could handle everything else built for PC

I don't care when its the other way around

Particularly when they try to keep the context-sensitive control schemes

6:05 PM
Consolitis is a disease. A game ported TO PC is nothing more than a money grab. Usually an extremely poor one.

porting games to PC doesn't push the technological limits of the PC
PC games always pushed the limits... cough Crysis

@fbueckert That's not entirely true. Often people develop games for consoles, then if the game does well, they port it to other systems.
@Skydrift* was built for Xbox 360, for example.

@GnomeSlicE Indie developers understand this better than the big-budget publishers.
A port is not, "Take game, make as few modifications as possible for PC, slap new paint job, and call it done."
And Ubisoft absolutely adores this methodology.
"Oh! The game is doing well? Great! Port it to PC! You have a week."

@fbueckert And they act as if they are doing us a favor, too.

6:09 PM
@Koviko Yeah. That attitude annoys me to no end.

@fbueckert Would be a change from all the games where you start off really weak; and several ways - Hulk can't control time; so he could have to rush over and find/kill baddies before they blow up bombs etc.

If they actually went, "Hey, this game is doing pretty good. If we port it to PC, what can we do to make it even better?"

@Alok I think time would be the only way to make a true Hulk game challenging. But that means you're going to waste a lot of time on retries.

A new idea for a Hulk game: Hulk baseball.
Premise: Hulk has to destroy things without moving. Provide equipment for batting, and start throwing things at him. He wins when he can hit the designated target.

@fbueckert "Street" basketball games already destroy the hoop with regular players.

6:12 PM
With designated targets being really out there. Like satellite death rays. And stuff like that.

Oh, I read basketball.
I never got the impression that Hulk's hand-eye coordination and precision were particularly impressive.
More of an improvisation kinda guy.

Maybe add in some mechanics so that if he hits something really hard, it can do collateral damage through sonic booms or stuff.

@Koviko Time, puzzles, control (he can't rage while climbing weak buildings as the floor would collapse), protection (take care not to smash cars into bystanders, and protect them when villains try it), disguise (has to get to place X to catch someone, but must be in Banner persona en route because people would freak out otherwise) etc.

@Alok Sounds like it'd annoy me as much as it'd annoy Hulk.

@Koviko Well, you wanted ideas other than time - and a lot of game features can be really annoying or really rewarding; depending on implementation

6:15 PM
@Alok Very true. Personally, I think anything that leads to beautiful, pre-rendered scenes is rewarding.
Other than that, I can't tell the difference most of the time.

Add in trick shots! Bounce objects off of buildings or other items, and if you still hit the target, awesome!
Who wouldn't want to see the Hulk bounce a car off a satellite to crush a villain?

@fbueckert I would love to. But then someone would have to punch Hulk and hurt their hand
Only to have HULK SMASH
And Rage meter. Rage meter is a must.

@Koviko So trick shot Mr. Stupid who thought punching him was a good idea. "Off the building, through the windows of another building, back to Hulk, who slaps him at hypersonic speeds into the target."

@Koviko I used to love pre-rendered cutscenes when games first started having them - but nowadays they try to be interactive movies sometimes and that is just frustrating :(. And then there are games like D3 where the cutscene graphics are great but the story they tell is complete POS

@fbueckert Haha that sounds amazing
@Alok Sometimes, an interactive movie is all I'm looking for.

6:20 PM
@fbueckert A normal Mr. Stupid would blow up in mid-air from the wind resistance >_<

@Alok ... ew

@Koviko Fair enough, so long as its mentioned clearly so I can ignore that 'game'

@Alok XenoSaga was fun. :)

One of the many games I want to try but never did :(

6:23 PM
@Alok So make sure Mr. Stupid isn't normal. Although, there's a primal joy in converting sentient meatbags to a thin paste on a wall somewhere.

@GnomeSlicE I'm not clicking on that at work.

@GnomeSlicE Sounds like actual porn.

@fbueckert You can click it now.
@Koviko Oh, I guess it does.
'studio porn'. My bad.

Most office designs that are built to be pretty are also crazy impractical. There's a reason most you have a desk in a cubicle/office.

6:27 PM
@fbueckert Correct, it's cheap.

@fbueckert Darn. Gnome beat me to it.

@GnomeSlicE And efficient.
The point of your job is to get stuff done. If you keep getting sidetracked by how pretty your office is, you're doing it wrong.

@fbueckert Right, you can get the most amount of workers into whatever building your company ends up 'owning' when you use cubicles.

@GnomeSlicE As an example, that screen up top would be completely distracting; what purpose does it serve?

@fbueckert It's relaxed? Comfortable? Inspirational?
You don't know what kind of business it is, hah.

6:30 PM
@GnomeSlicE Unless your job is being a mad scientist, it's going to distract you from the job at hand.

Q: Error Code=3 on start

Boe-DevI try to play 'Game Dev Story' on my Galaxy Nexus with Android 4.1.1. But when I want so start the App, I get 'Error Code=3'. The Demo runs perfect, but not the current version 1.0.7

What it's a board room?
You don't know.

@Lazers If a question isn't stated in the form of a question, can I be picky and flag it?

@GnomeSlicE And there's the next argument. If it's a boardroom, the same effect can be had with a projector.

@fbueckert With a what?
Like an overhead image projector? Or does projector mean something else.

6:32 PM
@GnomeSlicE Nope, you got it.

@fbueckert ...Then I have no idea what you're talking about, what 'effect'?

@GnomeSlicE Although, modern projectors work much better for displaying stuff than overhead ones.

@fbueckert a modern projector can be mounted on the ceiling...
'over head'.

An overhead projector is a variant of slide projector that is used to display images to an audience. Mechanism An overhead projector typically consists of a large box containing a very bright lamp and a fan to cool it. On top of the box is a large fresnel lens that collimates the light. Above the box, typically on a long arm, is a mirror and lens that focusses and redirects the light forward instead of up. Transparencies are placed on top of the lens for display. The light from the lamp travels through the transparency and into the mirror where it is shone forward onto a screen for d...

@fbueckert Whatever, you knew what I meant. A projector over your head.
It doesn't even matter what kind of projector I meant, I don't know what 'effect' you were referring to.

6:35 PM
@GnomeSlicE I thought I did. Thought I'd clarify, so we're on the same page.
@GnomeSlicE The display in the middle. The point is to provide the same information to everyone around it, yes?

@fbueckert ...That's a window.
There's a room behind it.
You don't see the chairs?

@GnomeSlicE If that's a window, that's an awfully cramped room.
It's not even as wide as the table "below" it.

@fbueckert Bout the size of an office room in most office buildings, I would think.
@fbueckert Uh... yes it is. It's wider, and it's across the room...
Look at the size of the chairs through the glass for reference.

That's a bad angle, then. And the point stands, actually.
A window into the building in my office would be crazy distracting.

@fbueckert It's an interior window man...

user2334
6:38 PM
@fbueckert I was trying to play along at home, but I can't figure out what screen you're referring to in this picture which is the only one linked inline here. I can't seem to find any screens in any of the other images in GnomeSlice's link

Oh, I see what you mean now.

@MarkTrapp That's the one

@fbueckert Well, clearly the guys who built that room didn't think so, hah.

user2334
@fbueckert Where's the screen?

12 mins ago, by fbueckert
Most office designs that are built to be pretty are also crazy impractical. There's a reason most you have a desk in a cubicle/office.
:P

6:39 PM
@MarkTrapp He thought the window was a screen.

@MarkTrapp It looked like a screen from the small picture.

user2334
If anything, the one thing that strikes me from looking at these pictures is how uncomfortable all the chairs would be. Except for the one with the Aeron chairs

Turns out, it's a really bad angle.

user2334
Ahhhh, I see

@MarkTrapp Aeron chairs?
And before you tell me to 'Google it', it will take quite a while on my connection to Google and load an image of that type of chair.

user2334
6:41 PM
@GnomeSlicE Aeron chair they're in two of the pictures, including the one you guys are arguing about

Ah okay, those the kind with with mesh back?

user2334
Among other things yes

Oh, I see, it's a whole style-thing of chair.
MINE has a curved mesh back like that, but none of that Transformers shit on the bottom.

user2334
@GnomeSlicE No, it's a specific chair made by Herman Miller. The knockoffs are terrible

user2334
@John Ahahaha, saw that coming a mile away

Okay....this place...

@John Hah, I don't have enough rep to downvote.

@John Apple.SE is pretty.

@GnomeSlicE I don't even have an account there, and I'm keeping it that way. I told the little "Was this post helpful?" thingamajig "No".

6:46 PM

I don't own any Apple products, so I wouldn't really fit in.

@Koviko Me neither.

@John lololol I left a comment.

@GnomeSlicE "I wish I had enough rep on Apple.SE to downvote. As it is, you'll have to make do with an angry glare: ಠ_ಠ –" xD
Excellent.

You know you can link comments right?

6:49 PM
@GnomeSlicE Yeah, but what's the fun in that?
Ooooho, I bet he's going for this.

user2334
@John What makes this even better is that there's a contest with prizes going on. All but one of the prizes will be earned by that question alone

user2334
All of them if someone writes a "contribute to the massive list" blog post

@MarkTrapp Hmm, the question was asked before Lauren posted, though...

user2334
Ahh, didn't catch that there was a start time: thought it was anything tagged

Is this question actually allowed on Apple.SE?

user2334
6:51 PM
> The contest starts on Wednesday, Jul 25 12:00 AM UTC and ends on Wednesday, Aug 8 12:00 AM UTC

This thing that I left a comment on?

user2334
@GnomeSlicE Yes, much to the chagrin of the entire rest of the network

Isn't it... not a real question or something?

@MarkTrapp Gah. Such a list/discussion question make me want to cast close votes.

@MarkTrapp I didn't either, and this place says he actually is winning...

Q: Exclude Community Wiki questions from the 'hot questions' list

Kyle CroninIt's no secret that Ask Different is more lenient than most other sites when it comes to allowing poll-like questions. We feel that a select few poll questions that are educational and well maintained are a great way to add some fun to our site, but to still stick to the principles of Stack Excha...

@MarkTrapp Let's see, 12AM UTC would be...last night. So he's well within bounds.
@GnomeSlicE Most sites would say so, yes.

Well, I left another comment in reply to his.

user2334
@John Yeah: he couldn't have asked a pre-release question and it would make sense to set the contest start date to coincide with the moment Mountain Lion was released

@MarkTrapp And the community downvoted this to hell... Another of Jeff's babies is rebelling.

@MarkTrapp Trying to remember...why I downvoted this...

@Koviko I think maybe it's just dumb.

@GnomeSlicE What is? I could use some clarification of the usage of "it" here as it can dramatically affect what you are saying.

@John @Koviko It was down voted to hell because it's Ask Different missing the forest for the trees: it presents CW as for "fun questions" so let's just keep the Hot Questions list free of them so Ask Different can do whatever it wants without people bitching at them instead of correcting the real problem, which is Ask Different shouldn't be allowing those questions in the first place
