@NickT It's easy for other people to verify as correct!

@NickT My highest SO answer is actually an answer to a game development type architecture :D

A: Game Objects Talking To Each Other

JamesEDIT: Below I describe a basic event messaging system I have used over and over.. And it occured to me that both school projects are open source and on the web. You can find the second version of this messaging system (and quite a bit more) at http://sourceforge.net/projects/bpfat/ .. Enjoy, and ...

@NickT Gaming.SE depresses me when this is my #1 viewed question (by a massive margin):

Q: What are all the Secret Achievements in Fruit Ninja?

fredleyWhat are all the Secret Achievements in Fruit Ninja? I've been playing for a while but only got the one for getting a score of 99.

My one and only SO question from like a year ago just received two downvotes out of the blue.

Q: Is there a difference between <div /> and <div></div>?

SternoRan into a problem on my web page where the footer in the master page wasn't displaying correctly for one particular page. On that page, I had a <div style="clear:both" /> at the bottom. After banging my head at it for a while, I saw that all I needed to change to get the footer to show u...

@Sterno well clearly we are boycotting your avatar :)

@fredley why's that, views are good, clearly that's of interest to lots of Googlers

Tony Meyer on March 01, 2012

Jeff Atwood, one of the founders of the StackExchange network, chose to mark his last (day-to-day) day at the company with a post disparaging identification questions.  As Jeff pointed out in his post, the story-identification tag is the second most common on our site right now, so I’d like to point out why our community feels that these are a valuable part of the site, where we disagree with Jeff’s viewpoint, and hopefully give you a bit better understanding of how decisions about what’s on-topic are made (and then re-made, and re-made, and …). …

@NickT Yeh. It's just such an easy question!

Relevant to the ITG discussion (not saying I agree with the post either way)

@James but it's the crying baby Jesus!

@Sterno You're not making things better :D

@RavenDreamer I thought @badp meant bonus points, not points (see arrow in picture)

5:06 PM
@BenBrocka Care to give us a tl;dr for that?

@BenBrocka Possibly, but only in terms of the actual substance.

@GraceNote I'm not saying they're the same as ITG, but it's interesting to see Sci Fi's defense of a very similar sort of question

@BenBrocka They are rather the same, in that respect - identify is identify. That's not actually what I was referring to, haha.

@BenBrocka I think Ill be staying out of this discussion from here on forward.. Reminds me a bit too much of Apple vs Windows vs Linux debates where no amount of persuasion is going to help :)

Q: Bonus points and how to get them

cornbread ninja Possible Duplicate: How do points work in Team Fortress 2? Is there a comprehensive list of ways to earn bonus points in TF2? I have seen here and there one way to do it with this class or the other, but there seems to be no complete list that I've found. Is there just one way pe...

reopen please

5:08 PM
@James I've selected a new avatar.

@GraceNote I mean the situations aren't the same, the questinos are basically the same. But gaming is about solving gaming problems...sci fi.SE is more about learning and understanding than "solving" imo

@Sterno Haha, I loved Duck Tails!

@BenBrocka I think you're basically trying to defend your point against someone who is agreeing with you on the alleged point of contention, so you're not making any sense.

@James Theme tune in head now. Thanks a lot.

@BenBrocka That original post about 'Guess this whatever' covered that most sites of a guess this answer type of tag to em.
@fredley Duck tails! Ah woo ooo!

Q: Is there an enchanted item duplication bug in Minecraft?

PhilHibbsI enchanted a bow with Power 1, and now I have three bows all with Power 1 on them. Did monsters drop the others, or is there an item duplication bug in Minecraft?

@GraceNote No you're not making sense! I mean, nevermind.

@James :-|

@BenBrocka Teehee~
(I certainly believe that, by consequence of being on the opposite of your defense of an agreed point, I likewise make absolutely no sense)

@fredley There are quite a few worse songs to get stuck in your head than that one :)

I came here for a good argument!

5:12 PM
@BenBrocka Oh Im sorry that's two doors down on the left.

I'm kind of curious about what Scrooge McDuck is wearing there. But not too curious, if you know what I mean.

@James lol
@Sterno swimsuit, he's swimming in coins

@Sterno Bathing suit, blue and white stripped. He would wear it when he would go swimming in his coins

@James +2 for duck tales, -1 for "ah woo woo"

I want to say 60s=70s style suit :)

@NickT 1*

@NickT BAZAAAM!

figured with 3 mods here that would not have been necessary
:P

I'm also considering:
that turned out big. Sorry

@NickT Another mod just straight reopening something that was straight closed by a different moderator can come across more contentious than if the community reopens, since it indicates a mass desync between the moderators themselves.

5:17 PM
@Sterno I dunno man, from baby Jesus to Scrouge McDuck.. I'd say that's all the win that could be had :)
@GraceNote You can't re-open something you have closed?

@GraceNote or it could be acknowledged as an error

@James Raven was the one who closed it.

@GraceNote Oh, Raven Dreamer, Grace Note, you both have two words for your names, what's the difference?? walks away whistling innocently

Does Gaming generally manage to gather enough close/reopen votes via the community to handle closing? YOu have a lot more high-rep users than UX and I find we often have to step in as mods to close Qs

@James You actually thought it was me?

5:19 PM
(Which I of course prefer we didn't have to)

@BenBrocka Yes, we do. We have quite a fine crew for both closing and reopening.

@GraceNote Yeah.. and I blame it on being Monday :D

I think UX had like exactly 5 or 6 regular closers, then we went and made two of those mods

@BenBrocka I have noticed the majority of opens/closes on gaming seem to be community based.. its fairly rare to see a moderator close one specifically
Fairly different from GameDev.SE which almost always seems to be closed by a moderator.
haha, I just noticed someone starred my duck tails end of theme song line :)

Q: What new systems exist in Diablo 3?

bwarnerDiablo's action RPG core has remained the same, and will do so in the third version. But it sounds like they are also introducing a number of new systems that borrow from WoW, Guild Wars, etc. Can someone list out the new systems with a brief comparison of how they worked in earlier versions of...

why is that open...

5:22 PM
@NickT "You have already voted to close this question "

seems about as useful as this, which we handily closed

Q: What features did StarCraft introduce to the RTS genre?

What's up DocDid StarCraft introduce any new innovative features that had not been in previous RTS games? This question seemed okay as a non-subjective question not asking for a list of features.

To the benefit of the Diablo question, though, it's scoping itself to just the series rather than an entire genre, so it's a lot more concrete of a thing you can establish between "What was introduced between 2 and 3" versus "What was introduced to a genre on the release of this game?"

Somewhat moot as Diablo near-as-makes-no-difference defines a genre

@NickT Right, so that's why comparing the changes between games is not really feasible to compare against changes to a genre on that element.

Matters of scope and scale aside, do we even want those types of questions?

5:27 PM
@NickT I don't hate them enough to crusade against them like I am for ITG.
I think they can be fine.

@NickT Do they differ much from 'If I didnt play ME2 can I play ME3?' sort of questions... ie: does the sequel matter compared to the current release?

My main gripe with the Diablo 3 question isn't the question itself. It's that Diablo 3 isn't out yet.

@James This isn't about the story though.

@StrixVaria There's a few ways in which a game can be in a "non being out" state. Diablo 3's isn't a state where we just can't have questions about it

Are these questions valid: "What new features did BF3 introduce over BF2?", "What features has COD added between it's 8 games?"

5:29 PM
@badp My official stance is "No questions until the game is officially released." If you want to know more, search the chat logs.
If the community deems otherwise, I don't actually care too much.

@badp Sure it is, it's in beta that thousands of people play

But that's the side I'll support in any meta topic about it.

@NickT So we can't have questions about it?

@NickT That's what he said, just in a weird way.

@badp you said it "isn't in a state", I said it is

5:30 PM
He used a double negative.

meh
nvm

Yeah, double negatives occur naturally in Italian sentence construction. Sorry
Sometimes I gotta give away my ESLness

@badp you mean double negatives don't not occur naturally.

Blizzard has shown that they're not against making wide, sweeping changes to Diablo 3 during the beta.
That's the main reason I'm opposed to D3 content for the time being.

@agent86 They're not uncommon ;)

5:31 PM
@badp That must be why Mario kept getting confused about the right castle, "she isn't not wasn't in that one"

@NickT ROFL
WooT, new Cube World screenies!

user15026
I am debating aobut picking up Crush3D when it releases, but I am scared it is going to be as irritating and not-good as Super Paper Mario was.

@AshleyNunn something bad being said about a paper mario game? I'm assuming there's a double negative in there somewhere.

user15026
@agent86 I hated Super Paper Mario (it was the one where you had to keep switching perspective) It was really difficult for me, and the constant need to change drove me nuts

@badp They occur naturally in English as well, but native speakers usually don't notice it.

Q: Where the heck are the AAs on Battlefield 3?

igneosaurSo I do play BF3 a lot, I've racked up about 60 hours gameplay but every time I look at my vehicle stats I can see I have absolutely no points for the AA! I can't believe I've been playing so long and haven't even apparently been in this vehicle. So was just wondering where on earth I can find th...

Q: How come you can play Counter Strike almost immediatelly after you start downloading in Steam?

TrufaI am curious as to how it is possible to start playing CS 1.6 after downloading so little from your steam account. The game is aproximately 300mb, and after something like 5% you can start playing. (The downland even pauses you're playing) How is that possible? Is that part of the game all ther...

@RavenDreamer Is there a loot dropping table for Minecraft anywhere, or further notes on the subject?

Aeo
@AshleyNunn Super Paper Mario never existed. Just keep telling yourself that and the rest of the series will support itself as the awesome it really is. :P

user15026
@Aeo laughs Yeah, I just pretend it was like a fake knockoff or something XD

Hum. I need to find some Kirby music to celebrate my new wallpaper.

Woohoo, I DID get the game grant
KIRBY MUSIC

5:39 PM
Wish they would make a new Gargoyle's Quest.

Nintendo needs to stop being a buttface and release all kirby OSTs digitally/in some form in the US/internationally :/ the ones I saw were all for japan only, at least for Super Star

user15026
@BenBrocka That would be nice.

Aeo
@AshleyNunn Indeed. Are you sure there wasn't a rainbow-sticker on the case somewhere?

user15026
@Aeo Now that you mention it.... ;)

So, anybody available to do science in TF2?
I need 2 people

5:43 PM
@AshleyNunn That it would

@badp I am.

gaming.stackexchange.com/a/53434/23 <- we need to go through that list and see what counts as a bonus point and what doesn't

@badp I'm could try, but my internet's been cutting out a lot randomly the past week.

I'm joining the tf2.stackgaming.com server (is that correct?)

Should we get on mumble too?

5:46 PM
@RonanForman I can't talk now

Okay then.

...great, and now all the listenings makes me want to play Dreamland 3 again. As if I didn't already want to play Dreamland 3 again.

wah
I just spent five minutes loading Gullywash :(
and it's loading thunder mountain of all maps

@GraceNote Coo is the man

@GraceNote Clearly, the only solution is to play Dreamland 3 again.

6:00 PM
we need a 3rd person. We've determined airblasting projectiles isn't it

don't have tf2, otherwise I'd hop on and help

@James Okay, I think I found the perfect avatar

@StrixVaria Your votes count double.

@Sterno Looks good man :) Not an old duck swimming through gold, but good :)

@Ktash It's free. Download it.

6:06 PM
you've got the last laugh. And a crate!
Also I'm getting a connection problem

Same.

I think I have enough for a first answer, I just need a screenie.

@RonanForman When can we expect the first episode of the LP? I'm wondering when we will be getting suggestions.

I assume that is it. I am at work.

6:08 PM
It is it.

@Ullallulloo It's free? On Steam?

@Ktash Yep.

been free for months

@Ullallulloo Hmm, interesting. I will go do that now. Have to sign up for steam first though lol

6:10 PM
@RonanForman Liked and stumbled.

It's 10 giga roughly

Oak
@fredley yea I know... but those are two separate games, and this question applies to both, so...

@BenBrocka I'm restraining my comment right now.
But to be fair, it is not a slight against Coo per se, because indeed, I do think Coo is awesome.

@badp Did you still need help with your sciencing?

oh god win
can you remotely share a controller?

6:15 PM
@ArdaXi My SNES was plugged in when our house got rocked by lightning.

:(

It works, in the sense that games run. However, the graphics have been... nyarigified as a result of the strike. So we can't really play anything feasibly.

The graphics have been manafyed? That sounds awesome.

@RonanForman When a spherical ball of light has been transformed into what can be best likened to a goat's cranium, no, it's not really awesome.

@GraceNote I thought you said nyan-ified for a second

6:25 PM
@NickT You should get accustomed to the "nyar" sound from me. It generally indicates not good things.

See: nyaragabaldic.

Aeo
@NickT Bah... The cat is now running through my head, leaving rainbows all over the place. Thanks. :P

so, it has come to this...

Q: Call for concepts: Determining new "Identify This Game" criteria

agent86The purpose of this question is to determine what requirements would need to be put in place for new ITG questions, if we continue to allow them on the site. After this has settled, we will vote on either keeping ITG questions with the criteria decided on here, or include them in the prohibited ...

If you wish to participate in the discussion around sorting good and bad ITGs, now is your chance.

@JuanManuel this is exactly what I was going for :)

6:29 PM
:)

@agent86 Oh yay, another chance to debate something that doesn't seem to ever change :)

@James we will finish this discussion in the next week, or your money back :)

@agent86 Hey! How did you get my wallet!?
Wait a second.. I don't have a wallet.. Nevermind :D

@JuanManuel So it has come to this

@James you should post an question to find it.

6:31 PM
All the more amusing because I am in El Segundo at the moment :D

Better start looking, then.

@Lazers So slow...
@GraceNote "nyarigified" sounds very lovecraftian.

@OrigamiRobot This past weekend saw far too many renditions of Nyarlathotep as a little girl than I would've expected.

6:47 PM
@agent86 then once found to make sure

@NickT yeah. I think those two tags work well in concert together.

Godammit Facebook, why'd you change the pages around so much. Do they not even support apps any longer, either?

@GraceNote I...Wha-....Th-...I don't want to know.

@GraceNote 10 Bullets seems very Every Extend-ish, but you might already know about it.

@agent86 and if you are unlucky and don't get it back
> A person is seen at a 10th floor window of a burning building. Their clothes are on fire and fire brigade has not yet arrived. The person is screaming for help. A passer by nearby realises that within seconds the person will suffer an agonising death from burns. He has a rifle with him and shoots the screaming person dead.
so it's legal to carry around a rifle in the UK?

6:51 PM
@NickT I think the final example is the weirdest, "what if there's an alien invasion?? THEN WHAT?"

@agent86 I assume downvotes on answers to your meta post will be ignored?

Is there a reason I got the gaming grant mail again asking me for the receipt for reimbrusment? I sent it Saturday night in a reply to the first mail I got on Friday

@agent86 It doesn't load at all

@OrigamiRobot No, a downvote indicates someone who figures that a policy cannot be enforced, either because it is a bad policy or because the policy has issues that render it unusable/untenable.

@agent86 Awesome game. Plays itself :)

6:53 PM
@OrigamiRobot It should put in perspective, though, why I had to restrain my comments towards Ben's comment about Coo being the man.

@GraceNote It will undoubtedly get downvotes from those who believe no policy is acceptable.

blogs.msdn.com/b/oldnewthing/archive/2012/03/05/10277439.aspx - Multimonitor pains and CSS overflow shenanigans

@GraceNote You have too much faith in the community's ability to use votes as intended.

Need two more VTCs on this question.

@badp I found the link via another source, and haven't tried playing it. Just throwing it out there for SHMUP lovers

6:54 PM
@OrigamiRobot We need a means for people to evaluate a set of criteria in order to point out that the given policy can't work. Otherwise, the point of trying to setup criteria is nonfunctional.

@NickT Why does getting a belly wound suddenly make a single soldier multiple targets? :)

@James Pieces of him have fallen off?

@GnomeSlice I don't - that's precisely why this criteria-establishing phase is being run to begin with.

@GraceNote I understand, I just don't think anti-ITGers should be going in and downvoting everything on principle.

@OrigamiRobot if they downvote everything, it's the same as downvoting nothing.

6:56 PM
@OrigamiRobot They shouldn't, and honestly knowing the stronger voices of that fold, I kind of expect better of them than to do it on grounds other than "I don't think this policy works". Which they do have a right to say.

@GnomeSlice I am actually wondering if instead of a post on the ethics of euthanasia if it isn't a post on stupidity 'Can you find 9 things wrong with this post?' :)

I can't enforce any voting restrictions, so if people want to downvote based on coin flips or the color of their mood rings, I can't know and can't act on it anyhow.

@GraceNote I expect better too, but we can't rely on that. I'm thinking of the case where an anti-ITGer goes in and downvotes all existing answers and then decides he/she is finished. Then, any new answers posted are skewed unless that user comes back to downvote them.

The "later answers are skewed" works in both directions and regardless of anti-ITG, though.
