3:00 PM
@badp Even if voting based on adherence to criteria, it still makes no sense.

where answers are voted on as a popularity contest rather than their ability to stick to the description

Because then it could be proper to upvote a wrong answer or downvote a correct answer.

@badp There is a difference between voting incorrectly and inability to vote correctly.

The above was the whole reason why game-rec was abandoned btw
@OrigamiRobot The difference perhaps is that we should accept ITG as "catalogue" questions that actually have none of the problems generic "catalogue" questions have
but to argue that I'd have to dig back up what trouble the generic "catalogue" questions do have

@badp They have a whole slew of different problems.

3:02 PM
then I'd have to make sure I'd actually be right
and that would require caring, which I'm out of

They aren't really catalogue questions, since there's only one correct answer.
So arguing that they are catalogue questions doesn't make sense.

@StrixVaria Yes, but the voting is a catalogue question's.

@badp Understandable.

"Does it fit or does it not?" "+1, this looks like it!" "-1, this doesn't look like it!"

@badp The voting on ITG makes no sense at all, no matter which way you break it down.

3:03 PM
Grace argues that doing voting like this puts ITG as a subset of Gamerec, which I find ridicolous

2 mins ago, by StrixVaria
Because then it could be proper to upvote a wrong answer or downvote a correct answer.

@StrixVaria There is only one vote that makes sense, the accept vote. All others are pointless.
2

one thing I can promise everyone is that we're going to resolve this soon. today we'll take another step forward, and later this week probably the final step.

If the asker misremembers detail (since he doesn't know the name of the game, this is quite likely), then voting on criteria is meaningless.

@badp A catalog of what? Questions that fit a certain criteria? That's referred to as "game recommendation" and is off-topic.

3:04 PM
@Wipqozn please reread the last few dozen messages of mine

ITGs sort-of-might-of worked under the old CW rules, however they are gone.

@StrixVaria At the end of the day what brings people to google the question is the question text, not PSI of what the asker wants. For everybody but the asker, the accept mark is not ultimately why they're there.

@badp I've read it, and I'm not sure what you mean if I misunderstand. We should vote on them like they were catalog questions, but they actually aren't?
That doesn't make any sense.

@fredley sort-of because of the no rep gain?

and, once again, is all about making special rules just so they can stay on the site.

3:06 PM
@badp How does that have anything to do with the voting problem I brought up?

@BenBrocka But also sort-of-kind-of because of the collaborative nature.

@StrixVaria It doesn't because you're looking at them the wrong way and then nothing makes sense

SE's policy has been that the votes are the problem not the rep (most of the time), blocking the rep gain was just a bandaid

@badp How should I look at votes on ITG questions then?

3 mins ago, by badp
"Does it fit or does it not?" "+1, this looks like it!" "-1, this doesn't look like it!"
I don't see any other way to vote on ITG answers

3:07 PM
@fredley True, though now they'd have to manually be made CW

@badp So it's okay to upvote the wrong answer?

@badp which works for Reddit, not SO

@StrixVaria Don't we upvote answers without accept marks all the time, even when they differ from the one the asker picked?

@badp Don't you hate it when you tell people you're out of energy/caring about a subject, and it results in getting sucked into a discussion about it?

...doesn't Reddit have some board for this?

3:07 PM
@badp Yes because they still provide useful information.
Not when they're blatantly wrong.

@StrixVaria blatantly wrong? They come close to fitting the question text and are thus useful to people who aren't the asker

Voting on 'wrong' answers across the rest of SE is seen as the communities idea of the correct answer, which can sometimes override the asker's idea of the correct answer. However for an ITG only the asker's idea of correct can ever be correct

write once, read many

@badp Look at agent numbers's data again and see how useful it is to other people on the Internet.
ITG have the lowest view count of any top tag on the site.
That argument doesn't work.

@StrixVaria That's an orthogonal (= different, unrelated) point

3:09 PM
@badp No, it's an important point. It means that your point is irrelevant.

@NickT Hah. No. She's your 'eyes in the sky' so to speak.

Less people google it? That's obvious and unsurprising.

It isn't actually helpful to other people on the internet.

People still are finding them however, as Joel has proved

No one on the Internet cares.

3:09 PM

@StrixVaria Citation needed

@StrixVaria As Jeff pointed out, people aren't finding existing answers, they're reposting dupes
@StrixVaria ITGs are no different from anything else in this respect

@fredley Oh yeah, three dupes make an universal truth

@StrixVaria people care about being able to ask them. Not so much for finding other people's ITGs

@badp Everyone knows the plural of anecdote is PROOF
3

3:10 PM
I'm at a boring meeting, watching this on my iPhone... It's keeping me very entertained

How can you know an ITG is a dupe until both are answered and accepted by the original askers?

@JuanManuel Happy to keep you entertained :)

@BenBrocka These three were, and even then Joel argued they weren't dupes
(I disagree with Joel here.)

The very fact that you're asking an ITG question means that you're too lazy to search for an answer to your question yourself, which defeats the purpose of keeping a catalogue of ITG questions in the first place.
That's why ITG has low views.

@StrixVaria Again not relevant to what we're discussing: the problem of voting.

3:11 PM
> Deep V's Dude, no. You are not allowed to have more cleavage than me.

@badp You are the one who brought up that they should stay around to help other people.

@badp But was it obvious that they were dupes before they were sucessfully answered? How could it be?

If we keep changing points of view then we'll just keep going in circles and I'm sick and tired of going in circles

This tumblr is great.

@badp I'm trying to address points as you bring them up. All of which have been covered in my essay, I might add.

3:12 PM
@BenBrocka That's Joel's argument for non closure.

Oh @GnomeSlice, the entire bridge is in a huge argument over ITG, and you're just commenting on funny images and blogs. So awesome.
2

@StrixVaria Then just tell me to RTFM and move along

> PROMISCUITY You know better than to ask how many men I’ve slept with, and I know better than to have ever kept track.

@badp RTFM.

@StrixVaria When I'll resume caring, maybe

3:13 PM
Not so awesome IMO. Unnecessary noise.

> BACON Bring home the bacon. Literally. I love bacon. That shit is delicious.

@JuanManuel Because this room is only for serious business...

Can we stop arguing about ITG and focus on the real problem facing Gaming.SE? It's the lack of pro. We haven't heard a peep from ronnie in ages.
4

@JuanManuel Sorry, I thought this was the general chat room.

@Sterno I agree. lack of pro is possibly the biggest threat to SE as a whole.

3:14 PM
Gaming general room, how are cleavages and breasts gaming related?
2

> AS YOU WISH Every once in a while, I’m gonna turn to you out of the blue and say “Farm boy, fetch me that pitcher.” You’d better know the proper response.
Man, this is hilarious.
@JuanManuel Clearly you've never played Soul Calibur.

@JuanManuel Having played video games, they are relatively related. At least as related as they are to comic books, anime and manga anyway

@JuanManuel I think you mean 'how are cleavages and breasts related to gaming?'

@GnomeSlice do you play anything but soul caliber?

@BenBrocka Oh yes. Just nothing recently anyone else knows anything about.
> GYM MEMBERSHIPS Are not considered presents. If you decided to ‘surprise’ me with one, I’ll know you think I’m fat and will retaliate by leaving stacks of penile implant brochures around the house for your viewing pleasure.

3:17 PM
@BenBrocka If you want to know what games @GnomeSlice plays you should add him on steam. He plays some interesting games.

@Wipqozn Are they all about boobs?

@BenBrocka Oh no, sometimes they are about curse words! It's all very creative.

@Wipqozn Well $%&!

@BenBrocka He said 'creative'.
You... you BALLSCROBBLER.

@Sterno *pro much

3:20 PM
@Sterno Actually, we have more of a problem with the lack of LAZERS right now. PING @Jin PING @Jin PING @Jin

> YOUR LADY FRIENDS Have all the female friends you want but if some floozy starts telling me how you like your eggs in the morning I’m gonna knock her the fuck out.
This is the funniest thing I've read in a while.
@fredley What is it with you people and lasers?

@GnomeSlice You're basically going to carry on like this until someone asks you what the site is aren't you?

@fredley I've linked it already.

@GnomeSlice What isn't it.
@GnomeSlice Oh, missed that.

> CLIMATE CONTROL Don’t you dare touch that fucking thermostat! I am a delicate flower and you pee on trees. Adapt.
I hope all women are like this.
> YOUR NAME is not my computer password, because not only is that easily guessable by hackers, it’s super lame.
One of the 10 funniest tumblrs according to the guardian. Jesu Christo. http://notestomyfuturehusband.com/page/2
Okay, I'm done.
> GOING TO BED ANGRY Fuck that weak ass shit. We’re gonna stay up and fight.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you derail a serious discussion.

3:33 PM
@GnomeSlice You could just put a penny on the tracks.

That... doesn't work.
You should slap whoever told you that that works.

@GnomeSlice I will spread whatever urban legend I want! You're not my real dad!

@NickT the whitespace is a problem too, but someone replaced a bunch of their links in templates to an an ad network, so they get money when unwitting users click the links in the wiki, and someone brock lots of templates. Blocking them from google doesn't sound like a bad idea though.

I work for a railroad. Trains derailing are not funny.
They'll do it themselves often enough without the help of urban legends

@Basil I'm not saying they are. But can you derail a train with a penny on the tracks?

3:35 PM
@GnomeSlice no

@OrigamiRobot Told you.

@GnomeSlice Put enough junk on it and it will, though.

@GnomeSlice You did tell me something I already knew.

@Basil Well, yeah, but I mean, trains are designed to be able to handle a bit of stuff on the tracks, I mean they hit animals from time to time too.

@GnomeSlice constantly. They don't even slow down...

3:37 PM

@Wipqozn radical

Is it just me or is that moving.

@GnomeSlice Worse is that a lot of trains carry grain, so animals tend to hang around the tracks. And we keep the tracks plowed, so during the winters, it's the easiest way to get around.
@GnomeSlice Just you... maybe check the milk?

No, it's definitely moving.

3:39 PM
@GnomeSlice Pretty sure it's just you.

@GnomeSlice I was not moved by anything.

@GnomeSlice I don't see any movement

Does anyone else see it moving? I think it's just Gnome...

@GnomeSlice It's just you.

might be one of those optical illusions

3:40 PM
@Basil It's just @GnomeSlice.

I see what you're doing here.

@GnomeSlice perhaps you should consult a physician

Or bad milk. I put bad milk into my coffee once... all kinds of things moved that shouldn't

@GnomeSlice Do you see this moving?

@fredley ow.

3:41 PM
> COMMUNICATION Workday sexting can be a fun distraction from time to time, but please don’t send me pictures of your penis unless you’ve done something funny like put a donut around it.

@GnomeSlice STOP IT NOW PLEASE

lololololololololo

what is this? I don't even.

Might be funnier if I were a woman.
But it's still pretty hilarious.

heh

3:43 PM

@fredley I've always hated you the most.

Oh man, this is the best thing.

OH MY GOD THERE'S AN OCTODAD SEQUEL
Teaser – Octodad: Dadliest Catch http://bit.ly/xonwXo

@YiJiang Yeh that one's a bit of a fail. I can post the first one again if you'd like?

> this sequel continues the story of an octopus posing as a human as he tries to accomplish everyday tasks with, and for, his oblivious human family.
LIUHGLBKYJUWGKWIFROWEFVKJEFHUEWHCE OCTODAD.

I could never figure out how the hell to play that game

3:53 PM
This is probably NFSW, but I swear I didn't plan for this.

@fredley Hehehe, no. The effect isn't as string as some of the others I've seen. I can only get it to move if I stare at the centre. Once I relax my eyes it stops moving

@badp Text description for those of us at work.

@StrixVaria He completed his free trial for a game and it froze on an image of what looks like a woman, seen from the back, removing her clothing.

@StrixVaria I played the OnLive demo of AC:Brotherhood. It simply cuts you off at whatever point you reach after 30 minutes of the game.

@badp LOL.

3:55 PM
The game's teasing you

Hahahaha that sounds hilarious.

@badp clearly they're trying to get you to continue playing.
I'd call that SFW.

So how's OnLive, by the way?

@YiJiang Actually pretty good. If the prices were cheaper (you do not in fact even have the bytes of the game in your computer!) I'd dig it. But then again I've always suffered too much to problems of poor fps at lowest settings.

> THE GUEST ROOM Let’s always keep one set of sheets jizz-free, to welcome houseguests, and one set of sheets that’s absolutely covered in jizz stains, so we can passive aggressively let the houseguests know that it’s time for them to leave.

I don't know what servers they have outside the US, but even in first person shooters (I tried Borderlands mostly) I get barely noticeable input latency
Of course, if you're "outside of your region" you can't set a credit card.
So all you can do is play the free demos.
@GnomeSlice No offense, but there's a long string of situations where your judgement on what's SFW and NSFW doesn't quite match with what most of us think :)

What sort of bandwidth do you have?

@YiJiang 900 kilobyte/s peak roughly

@GnomeSlice why don't you just post a link to whatever list you're reading and stop spamming the room with questionable material.
3

It's strange, but looking at its homepage I can't seem to find a list of supported regions

@YiJiang I know. I think "out of your region" is an euphemism for "outside US"
(go figure)

4:01 PM
@Lazers One more close vote.

although it might also include the UK. I recall @Arda linking to something to this effect

@YiJiang I'm fairly certain however that this holds:

Any other support for closing this as a dupe?

Q: Do all players spawn on the same block in SMP?

disponserDo all players on server spawn at the exactly same spot? What I mean is, do all the players have the exact same spawn coordinates? I know that the player spawns at the same point so if I place a dirt block in the place I spawned all the players will spawn on it?

@OrigamiRobot I did.
One of the 10 funniest tumblrs according to the guardian. Jesu Christo. http://notestomyfuturehusband.com/page/2

4:08 PM
Oh god are there still games relying on GameSpy for their MP?

@badp T_T

user15026
@GnomeSlice Haven't you already linked to this, at least once?

@AshleyNunn People keep asking me what I'm talking about!
@badp Oh yes.

@GnomeSlice No, we're asking you to stop talking about it so much.

@GnomeSlice @GnomeSlice That's the third link I believe

user15026
4:10 PM
@OrigamiRobot This.

@OrigamiRobot This.

GAWD, FINE.

@OrigamiRobot This. (only very mild trollface here)

@GnomeSlice It's in your best interest. You were getting a flag or two.

@OrigamiRobot @GnomeSlice loves flags though.

@fredley Flagnet?
Darn

Who the hell are 'Kent and Matt'?

@OrigamiRobot Flagnet.

Turns out it's @the72pins
Also, whoaahuoughh there's going to be a Men in Black III?
:D

@Wipqozn I attribute the low turnout for Game On! this weekend to the lack of @GraceNote.

Q: Bonus points and how to get them

@GnomeSlice I was like "Oh, I -know- I have answered that before."

4:19 PM
Jesus Christ it's cold...
-24 wind chill.

I'm not sure what to do with this answer. I hate to just link it without also listing it on the site, but otherwise I'd just be copying the entire table. Plus, the wiki will almost certainly be more up to date in the future than my answer

#GameMaker #HTML5 v1.0.216 now uploaded - Room Editor fixes and box2D physics preview added #yoyogames

@DaveMcClelland Do you have any points or summary elements you can provide on the matter in addition? For example, the question asks "Is there just one way per class?", can you answer that?

@DaveMcClelland Never mind your answer is partically off-target as that's a list of ways to score points
while we're talking bonus points

@GraceNote Good call, I can edit that in
@badp But the bonus points are listed in the table

4:21 PM
I think the answer (the number that appears as your "bonus" number in the leaderboard stats) is just headshots and backstabs but I can't be sure

@badp Wait, there's actually a "bonus point" stat on the leaderboard? Oh, I guess I misunderstood the actual question

4:36 PM
@fredley at least he spelled "defense" correctly

Pyro extinguishes probably also count as bonus

@NickT No he didn't, there's an s in it.

@badp You just get bonus points because your initials match.

@badp Yeah, I see that. I have no idea what that means. I'm just about to comment on that question. There's some discussion of it on the wiki's talk page but they seem to not be sure either

@DaveMcClelland I guess this means we've got science to do.
Is there anybody else available to make science happen?

4:39 PM
@ArdaXi He does have the 's'

I hope it's a triumph.

@badp I'm not available, I'm at work. I'm definitely interested in doing it after work, though

@OrigamiRobot Exactly.

@DaveMcClelland when I might not be available

@ArdaXi There is an s in defense (as you said) and he has it in there.

4:39 PM
@badp I can find people if you won't be around. Thanks for the offer though. If you find people now though, let me know the results, I'm curious

Since you two are clearly on obviously opposed sides with regards to the spelling and have no intent to back down, how about we skip the whole "acting clueless" part?

@OrigamiRobot Depends on which spelling you prefer.

@Sterno Shush, I'm annoying @ArdaXi :P

@GraceNote Then they wouldn't have been able to effectively troll me.

@GraceNote Meh, I was only joking.
@OrigamiRobot I thought I was annoying you.

4:40 PM
You're both annoying me.

:(

Mutually Assured Annoyance

@ArdaXi I knew you were. You both were. But you two could go on forever.

I suppose there's precedent...

4:42 PM
@GraceNote I can go on forever. I am a robot.

@OrigamiRobot Not forever.

@ArdaXi I am powered by spite. It is an unlimited fuel source.

@OrigamiRobot Unlimited, perhaps, but not infinite.

0
Q: What is the formula for calculating interest from comms?

OakWhat is the formula for income from comms in iBomber Defense and iBomber Defense Pacific?

@ArdaXi Spite is an unbounded positive feedback loop.

4:45 PM
@OrigamiRobot Unbounded is unlimited.
Even feedback loops leak energy over time.

@ArdaXi Infinity (symbol: ∞) is a concept in many fields, most predominantly mathematics and physics, that refers to a quantity without bound or end.

Without bound or end.
Spite is unbounded, but not without end.

False. Also, look up a truth table for OR.

When no-one exists to be spiteful, spite itself ceases to exist.

Introducing @OrigamiRobot, the infinite spite robot.

4:47 PM
I'm having trouble understanding why my friends who are gamers AND software developers don't seem to have it in them to check out Gaming.SE, even when I point out the massive amount of stuff this site is giving away.

@ArdaXi I am also a spite producing robot. I am a free energy device.

@Sterno Me too. I point at a giveaway and they balk at earning 300 rep

@OrigamiRobot There's a difference between linguistic and logical or.

@OrigamiRobot Perpetual spite machine

@OrigamiRobot Entropy must always increase to a maximum.

4:48 PM
@ArdaXi Linguistic or usually refers to logical XOR

@ArdaXi I am a robot. Everything is logical. Even the things that are not.

@ArdaXi Only if you're travelling forwards in time

They all play Skyrim, too. 300 rep would be easy.

@fredley If you're travelling backwards in time you're still limited, because you'll run into the starting point.

@Sterno I'd mention ITGs at this point, but I don't think I can handle another round of that conversation quite yet

4:49 PM
I think skyrim has been beaten to death on here, 90% of 'new' questions are closed as dupes

@ArdaXi and out the other side

@fredley I do have one friend who got on, answered 2 ITGs, posted his own, and hit 300 rep

Spite is not bound to physical laws. I already told you it is unbounded.

@Sterno shhhhh!!! They'll hear you!

@OrigamiRobot Then it cannot be an energy source.

4:50 PM
@OrigamiRobot Now you are just being spiteful :P

@ArdaXi And yet I exist.

@OrigamiRobot Prove it

@OrigamiRobot False == True

@OrigamiRobot No you don't.

@OrigamiRobot You're probably just cheating with a bunch of solar panels.
2

4:51 PM
@James I don't know. I started playing it again over the weekend and saw quite a few things I could have asked on here, but didn't bother since UESP pretty much covered it

You're just a figment of @ArdaXi's imagination.

@James Still, if your only real goal is to hit 300 rep to be eligible, it'd be an easy way to do it.

@OrigamiRobot "This statement is false." "New mission: refuse this mission." "Does a set of all sets that do not contain themselves contain itself?"

@Sterno But once you get to 300 you have too takes off glasses ask more questions!

@ArdaXi All robots are just fancy four-function calculators. Solar panels are standard issues for them.

4:52 PM
@badp Which 4 functions?

@James That's true. And if you want to satisfy the game grant requirements, too

Spite, spite, spite and spite in Origami's case.

@Sterno They will come around eventually, I know I keep referring people to Gaming.SE and GameDev.SE all the time

@badp Every operation on @OrigamiRobot's CPU is SPITE

@ArdaXi crashes

4:53 PM
well there's regular branching set of conditional spiting operations: SPITEEQ, SPITENE, SPITEGE, etc., but then they must be followed by an inconditional immediate SPITEI operation

@ArdaXi How quaint.

I was surprised by one friend who is a developer yet had never heard of StackOverflow

@agent86 Cropping.

@badp SPITEMUL SPITEADDI SPITEMUL

@Sterno That site has saved me two very long sleepless nights :)

4:54 PM
@OrigamiRobot So what's the answer to the last one?

I will return in 1 hour. I must go "eat" with my "fellow humans"

Suuure.

@ArdaXi Yes.

Though I will admit I am still not sure what the difference is between Programming.SE and StackOverflow.. cept SO seems more... practical...

@OrigamiRobot How spiteful.

4:55 PM
@OrigamiRobot When you say "with"...
@James Programming.SE was a place for all the crap clutter questions on SO
