@Eran Yes, that seems a good theory. No votes until at least 99 views.
Because isn't it level 99 when they get their superpowers?
@KitZ.Fox Perhaps, but 99 seems a bit low.
999?
It does seem low, but some of those other questions were just over 100 weren't they? I don't actually remember. Maybe it was 1000.
I doubt a HNQ could make it to 999 views without an upvote
@Quill-HATMANIAC I don't think the first vote should come after x views. I'm saying that the first vote that counts toward the hat should come after x views.
14:26
hmm
then how many is y votes?
@KitZ.Fox 1000 is too high. My question on MSE got the hat several hours before it got the badge for 1000 views.
Then I think it's 99. That's what I'm going with.
@Quill-HATMANIAC My initial guess was 500 views/5 votes, but I'm not sure if there should be some timing consideration as well (how quick should the votes be cast once you reach the required views)
Then look for a question with 99 views and gather some peope to upvote it. My votes are exhausted for the day.
Maybe it is more complicated than that, like more votes after 99/some number of views than before it?
So you could have 3 votes, but after some number of views get 6 votes and then you get the hat.
Which would explain why supercollidered questions are more likely to get it.
Because those are late views.
@KitZ.Fox after 92 views, have 12 votes in a 1 hour (day?) interval?
14:36
Some of them had fewer than 12 votes.
What about earning privileges for other users? Did anyone look at the answerers?
I earned some privileges on meta, no hat. If it is related to privileges then it must be bot that and other requirements like the views and time ranges.
You earned privs for answering?
Layers, man. Foxes have layers.
15:03
Anyone guess Onion Knight yet?
My current guess is +5 upvotes (upvotes - downvotes?) and at least one close vote.
@Eran Did you get a close vote on it?
And thanks, everyone, I did get 007.
@Hosch250 I don't know. I don't think I have enough rep to see close votes on Meta SE.
I want to aim for 007 next
@Hosch250 No, it didn't get a close vote.
What is there for secret hats this morning?
still nothing new
I thought there would be more by now..
Me too
Maybe they are harder than we thought
15:12
@NᴏᴠɪᴄᴇIɴDɪsɢᴜɪsᴇ Or fewer than we hoped.
D:
They wouldn't do that to us!
There are 33+ I know for sure
Maybe there is one for Hanukkah?
There was last year. Also one for St. Lucia.
And one for an Islamic holiday.
^^
It is indeed +5/-5 on any meta post
There appears to be a delay (until the vote is locked in?).
Oh, just have to reload the page.
@Hosch250 I can't see up/down votes on CR.. what's mine at? meta.codereview.stackexchange.com/a/6339/92262
+5/-5.
You should get it any second.
16:01
@Derpy That's what I thought I did do.
The hat store is deserted!

Q: Names can be hidden under hats in chat

MastIf a user types a couple of lines right after each other in chat, the avatar grows to it's maximum size. So does the hat. Because of the size of the mask and the short length of the name, the name gets hidden by the hat. This can't possibly be by design.

@Pops Not trying to worm information out of you, but just curious - do you know what the secret hats are?
Yes. I invented most of this year's hats.
Cool. So that is why you don't have the fun of guessing them.
The Onion Knight one is really tricky.
16:15
@Pops Could you confirm the number of secret hats at least or it is an information you prefer to keep hidden? It is perfectly fine if you wish to.
I believe that's hidden by design.
@Pops Yep, but some year ago Shog posted that hint list. I don't really want the hint, just the numbers to know if it is worth to look for more hidden one or we should just focus on the ones that were found.
But again, I understand that may be asking to much and respect the decision.
There are 42.
42 secret hats?
That's the answer to everything, right?
16:18
Oh, duh.
By that reasoning, you are 42 years old.
As is everyone else...
I was gonna say, when we get a bit further in, you might get hints, but it's only day two, people.
6
@JoshCrozier actually, if the id were sequential and the missing numbers were the hidden hats - that have been moved to higher id so that the api can't be abused, it would be 45 hats.
that would mean 17 secret ones.
meaning we lack a grand total of 11.
doesn't seem realistic though, each year the number has been around 8
Unless they really went far with the "more secret hats" thing.
Ok, I am making a weird attempt then... You asked for it, @Pops :P
16:24
@Derpy I would imagine that someone has thought about it at some point? I don't remember it ever being brought up for full team discussion as an actual change request. Might have happened before my time? I would think that would have to become part of the site design process, and not an insignificant amount of work for our existing 100+ sites.
@Pops Actually, I didn't mean them to be different for each site, so at least it would have been a "one time only" thing. But yep, thanks for the info. I will see if anyone else around would like to help for a proposal.
@Pops - I hope that you will get notice of my hat attempt very soon... I hope it at least give you a smile.
@Derpy I have no idea what this means but I assure you that I am terrified.
3
Next year Pops is the target to comment on.
I'm guessing bluefeet, Anna, or balpha.
I hope it is Jeff Atwood ;)
We'd need somebody with posts all over the place.
16:38
@Pops :grins: You put that line in the Winter Bash FAQs, I did that.
We can all say "Dear Jeff: Thank you for starting SE."
@Hosch250 why no "Hi Jeff.. isn't time to return yet?"
@Derpy Actually I didn't touch the FAQs. They stayed exactly the same as they did in previous years, except for date updates.
@Derpy With all the different existing designs and color schemes though, I don't know if any one set of images would even work. I guess I'll look forward to your meta post though.

OK, everybody, give @Mat'sMug 007: http://codereview.stackexchange.com/a/114054/34073
It is a good answer definitely worthy of +7.
@Pops They're a lot of fun this year, though I'm not sure how I feel about the method of obtaining the one I'm wearing.
XD
That was a little . . . farmed
I tried to farm it, but the one I tried to farm on was on pre-Bash post, so it didn't work. I got it by posting my honest opinions on a controversial meta post. There is a comment war still raging under it, which I am staying the hell out of.
Looks like there have already been at least 10 comments that used to be there that were deleted.
@MikeMiller Oh cool! We all farmed the heck out of it
Luckily my meta has controversial posts about once every three minutes.
17:43
A dozen of us got it from the same post . . .
Another Onion Knight sighting
Over here on PPCG too
I was directed here ... something about stinky onions
When did you get the Onion Knight hat?
I have it too
17:47
@HATMAN Wait, what?
We have nothing 100% confirmed on it yet
Sounds like I've missed a couple of Onion Knight sightings.
How many have we found?
Sometime after 4:00pm Central but before 7:00am Central.
NVM, not relevant.
There are quite a few
17:48
It's definitely something question related.

Q: Novel Prime Factors of Repunits

TimmyDThe Background Folks were talking prime factorization in chat and we found ourselves talking about repunits. Repunits are a subset of the numbers known as repdigits, which are numbers consisting of only repeating digits, like 222 or 4444444444444444, but repunits consist only of 1. The first co...

We are pretty sure it has to do with having a question on the first page of the HNQ list with under a certain number of votes
@HATMAN Have we confirmed that all the questions involved got HNQ though?
I thought that there were a couple that didn't
17:49
That is why we aren't sure
Hmph.
It could be a cause or an effect at this point
@Pops pls
That isn't enough to trigger it.
@quartata Hey, don't cheat.
17:50
lol
@Hosch250 Yeah I figured that one didn't get enough to be HNQ
What do they have in common then
We wantez Archimedez hatz
High view to vote ratio?
@PhiNotPi No we already debunked that one
Are you trying to give Pops the Archimedes hat?
17:50
lol
I'd say it has something to do with being tweeted but that one on Math SE wasn't tweeted
Hrmph part 2
Wait. Can you link the math question that did get it and the one that didn't?
@Hosch250 007 is really hard
17:51

Q: What is the etymology of the term "Cockpit"?

HATMANI have always been intrigued by the word cockpit and have wondered where it originated. I have heard that it originated in the times of cock fights; is this true? If it is, how did the word evolve from having its original cockfighting meaning to being the name for the portion of an airplane or ...

Not really.
That is the one I got it on
But what if someone comments on it at 6 upvotes because they can?
@Hosch250 On Blender.SE it is almost impossible
@HATMAN I saw that in HNQ.
17:52
Yeah
That's the kind of effect I think we'll see once people find out
Almost right after someone mentioned that, I got the hat
OK, so going to the GoT reference, the character was a smuggler. Does that tell you anything?
I'm still not convinced it is the GoT reference.
It makes more sense as the FF reference.
But if it is a smuggler it would make sense as something with the view-to-vote ratio.
Since you're getting upvotes without people watching
Get it? hue hue crickets
@quartata That's what I would think too.
17:54
lol
Jiminy . . . crickets
Or it could be something with bringing new people into the site via HNQ link?
Maybe.
It could be like a new user thing.
Hmm
Maybe "someone signed up on the site just to answer the question?"
17:55
The post gets a new user's first vote?
@quartata: Definitely not.
@MikeMiller ?
Let me check again but
Greeter and close-vote available at CR.
17:57
@quartata All the answers to my challenge were established users
@Hosch250 If that were the case, you'd figure there would be a lot more.
No, new users can't vote for a while.
A lot of them quit before they can vote.
Yeah
You need what, 20 rep to vote?
Unless they get the association bonus
@Mast Something like that
(I am doing a render so my machine is slow guys)
15.
@quartata One thing that points to this is that Pops knew about the FF reference.
Was quite familiar with it, I should say.
18:02
@Mast Your monkey looks sleepy, mine furious. I like it.
lol
Odinson is the only hat that fits my puppy nice.
@MikeMiller It's the plasma behind it. Turns everyone sleepy.
The backgrounds are awesome yea, nice contrast.
I'm ambiguous about the crown.
Or whatever tiara it is.
My question hit HNQ.
oooh
18:09
Top page.
Let's see what happens
Votes will happen.
What are the other stats?
Hey, do HNQs always have answers?
18:10
Views will happen.
@MikeMiller No.
At least, I think not.
Oh, actually, onion knight doesn't have to be from HNQ
Some guy on math got it whose question could not possibly be HNQ, I think - He had MathJaX in the title
Which prevents you from being HNQ
lol
18:13
hmm
Another potential 007, but not as good as Mat's answer: codereview.stackexchange.com/a/114059/34073
resists urge to randomly post I am an anti-hat jerk on various posts
If you were really passionate about preventing people from getting hats, you should have downvoted the top 40 or something at -1 UTC :)
XD

Q: What is the origin and thought process behind the tradition of hats?

HATMANWinterBash is always a lot of fun and makes people trek across sites and participate in communities they are not usually a part of, but how did they originate? What was the thought process behind introducing this tradition?

19:05
I earned Do It Yourself.
Anybody want to throw some upvotes at this and see what happens? It just showed up on the HNQ.
@MikeMiller I don't think this question has nearly enough views yet for the votes to work, but I might be wrong.
I'm not sure I agree with the views thing. But throwing upvotes at those two should tell us whether they do, I guess? I don't even know.
@MikeMiller ok, I upvotes both.
Just let it happen organically. You can still see vote counts even if you're not casting votes yourself.
19:12
Fair point.
It's just fun to do science.
If it makes you feel better I thought they were good questions and answers!
My question is rising in the HNQ, but does not yet have Onion Knight.
9 votes and c. 300 views.
19:28
hello
hellO
do you get the upvote hat if you had downvotes on deleted posts?
I think so
According to someone in this room yesterday, downvotes on deleted posts shouldn't matter.
19:41
Any progress on onion?
codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/66656/42963 ... Currently at the top of HNQ, has more views, more votes, and more answers than my question did, user doesn't have Onion Knight hat.
odd

I don't get that one either
Harder to rep cap today than yesterday. Fewer fun questions.
19:47
I've still got 5 hours to push for 100 more
It's easy on SO ;)
29 days in a row for me..
It's relatively easy on PPCG
It's probably easy on Math too, if I was willing to answer the pages upon pages of garbage...
@Doorknob冰 You're good with regex.. is this possible?
0
Q: RegEx for matching characters unless they are contained in certain string

johnRivsLet's say I wanna match the letters E, Q and W. However, I don't want them matched if they're found in a certain string of characters, for instance, HELLO. LKNSDG8E94GO98SGIOWNGOUH09PIHELLOBN0D98HREINBMUE ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ yes yes NO y...

yup
writes up an answer
19:50
Yeah, go for it.. I answered his question without realizing that the characters would change...

A: RegEx for matching characters unless they are contained in certain string

Doorknob 冰There's a nifty regex trick you can use for this. Here's some code in JavaScript, but it can be adapted to any language: var str = 'LKNSDG8E94GO98SGIOWNGOUH09PIHELLOBN0D98HREINBMUE', rgx = /HELLO|([EQW])/g, match; while ((match = rgx.exec(str)) != null) { if (match[1]) outp...

Been a while since I've used Stack Snippets in an actual answer. :P
@Doorknob冰 I like how when you have a bigger chatbox and thus a bigger picture, your bathtub covers part of your name, so you turn into Doork
hahaha :D
@Doorknob冰 Upvoted.. I was wondering if it was possible with a single expression though :p
I deleted mine.
@JoshCrozier Pretty sure it's impossible with just a regex match
19:59
thought so..
It is a single regex though. This is one of those neat tricks that's really useful but lesser-known.
You can use it to, say, match "foo" except when surrounded by quotes, too: "[^"]*"|(foo)
@Pops: is there something we're just not understanding about Weed Eater, a few users have reported getting confirms on Tumbleweeds, yet no hats ;-; (see below)

I hear some users got a little hostile about it even, silly hat maniacs
Yeah
Really odd
Happened to someone on our site too
20:20
Deleted comments prevent earning 007: proof
ok
Good to know
update the meat question with the info
guys
what is the Amazing Grace hat
check my hats
Huh!
No idea
Any idea what you got it on?
I'll get meta
ON meta.se
I haven't been online (doing anything in hours)
Someone want to start the hunt for other users with that? It'll be their first hat, since it's surely the rarest right now.
I don't have the time right now...
@Quill-HATMANIAC That makes me think it is related to a large quantity of other user actions, i.e. views or something like that
20:27
Yeah, probably not
I would get in on CR then
I barely browse Meta
Hmm
allright, let's go through my actions
@Quill-HATMANIAC did you take back a downvote or reopen a post?
a few nice questions a nice answer
reached 12
oh wait
20:29
I took away an upvote I gave in the space of about 10 seconds
Huh
Just now?
Seems too easy
That cannot be it
tests it
20:30
Yeah, @HATMAN
a little while ago
1 message moved from The 2nd Monitor
nobody answered me earlier, is there a hat for changing your name?
@Malachi nope (as I found out)
20:31
okay, that would explain why no one said anything
lol
also does someone want to call what it is
(like the reference)
@Quill-HATMANIAC Any other ideas of how you could have earned it?
my actions are pretty much useless
@Quill-HATMANIAC Amazing Grace is a song written by John Newton, previously a slave trader. It is a very popular Christian Hymn, and grace is a critical tenet of reformed christian theology.
did you do some reviews?
20:34
@Quill-HATMANIAC Oh, I see the confusion. You need to answer a question that is currently a tumbleweed. The question you linked as an example earned its author a Tumbleweed badge at some point in the past, but was since visited more and upvoted a bunch of times, so by the time you answered it, it was no longer a tumbleweed.
What happened after your edit?
Thanks for the clarification
@Malachi it was on MSE
@Pops Ah, thank you
didn't do edits
20:35
Revised?
hmm
that was ages ago
in no way matters
@Quill-HATMANIAC What is this madness? I ordered them to make an Amazing Race hat! Imbiciles! That hat doesn't look anything like
4
unless something has to happen afterwards
20:36
Downvoted, then swapped to upvoting
Maybe
@Quill-HATMANIAC people have been doing that all along, I don't think that is it
@Pops why is the rep cap hat not a cap
Yikes, I'm down to three hours.
II
I need 40 rep on Blender
hmm
Something good . . .
20:41
What Rw the criteria for Tumbleweed? How many views are "low l"
@Quill-HATMANIAC That's... a hockey cap. You just... don't call it that... in your part of the world... which makes you weird, not me....
you got the hat on MSE huh?
Maybe it is chat related?
we don't have hockey (ice) in my part of the world
maybe it is chat related, although I'd doubt it
what did you do in chat?
20:42
nothing, really
standard spam stuff
2
lol
Last night at midnight it was like 30C
did you use all of your stars or something?
nope
we checked the stars thing already
did I miss a hat on the 13th? or 14th? or 15th?
20:44
14th
voting hat
I think you just missed it, it is available for 12hrs after the UTC time switches
maybe a really long waiting hat?
I can't imagine that would be it . . .
17 hours is a long time
I think it is related to an action that you take, and then other people have to fulfil the other parameters
@HATMAN oh I got that one
Oh ok
Nothing else yet
star wars in a few days
20:48
Yep
Um
Right
Time To Go To Work?
Or Get?
that, first one
Ah, 60 away... it's starting to feel doable.
