PSA: Regarding the new top bar, I reported an issue where we no longer see if there's anything in the review queues (there used to be a number (which usually bared no relation to the actual numbers in the queues), but now there's nothing. Shog tells me that it's driven by a threshold number. This is why we don't see this notification. I'm seeking to lower this threshold.
I got an offer letter last month and the company has asked me to join on novemmber 15th( from the date of release of offer letter they have calculated 60 days as my notice period is 60days)
I took a day of time to read the offer letter and put my resgination on the current company on sep 17 and hence I can be relived from my current organization on november 18
and I wanted to take a break of 1 week so that I can start as a fresh in the new company. For this I called on phone to the Hr and said all these reasons. She said me to drop an email and I did. The email I sent on 2 weeks back and she has not yet confirmed about the new joining date. So i called her on mobile number this monday, she didnt answer and asked me to send her text(I know she did not save my number)
I have also sent her text but no response again
So I called her again today but she did not pick my call
is it correct to send email again, saying
Tried to reach on your phone but call went unaswered.could you please update me on the confirmation of the joining date?
@Snow Depends on which city you're in. There are a lot of places in the UK with top notch curry places due to the large Indian population surge during the 60s. Won't ever be as good home made, but you can get extremely close
@Snow yes might be because there are some spices not available in other countries. My ex colleague used to stay in argentina. He was saying there are certain spices not availble. So he quit his job(he was working as a software developer). Then he and his wife started doing businness. They now import spices from india and sell in argentina. He is very happy in his new job and earning a pretty amount too
if you happen to come india then visit hyderabad and dont miss to have biryani.
I was staying last in hyderabad and miss biryani much
@Nofel I was just thinking that being asked to teach a coworker how to do the deployment in case you weren't in is difficult to see as an omen of a lay off in those circumstances so while I still think you work for an asshole and should get the hell out of there I don't think worrying about this particular scenario is necessary
sorry to see that it's causing you strife at home by the way :( It's not good when a crappy work situation spills over to affect your personal life :(
@Snow you say that, however, I work with a lot of Indian folks, and they are adamant that some curries are better in India and some here. Probably because of what @Draken said. My local Nepalese restaurant is awesome, by the way!
@motosubatsu It depends also on the peer who has no exp, with X. While I asked my TL the person b4 me had done something, I need to download it again as its premium and they had no idea how and what it is, this puts all pessure on me, what if things go bananas on launch
given my peer support he would back out and my TL wuld say well u said "X min for deployment" now wth is gone wrong.
@Nofel all changes should have a proper rollback plan in place and everyone should be prepared that it's a possibility. From the sounds of it (and what you have previously said about this boss) that's not the case where you are. Which sucks, and of course contributes to the "get the hell out" conclusion
It comes as a shock that when I don't know X things, I am pushed to know it in adavance and will my peer don't know X thing, the TL is chilled af and say so now what.
@Snow all distinct possibilities - also there is the possibility of pressure from on high, from the fact that the company had layoffs earlier in the year there could be a lot riding on the deployment going well. Who knows, the TL could be worried about HIS job were this to go sideways on him
U can feel the bound between TL and peer coz both joined same year and they r here for atleast quater of decade
which is ok but I think it should be fair play. They said we wuld teach "X" teach to new comer, I came but all they could teach me what they wanted me to learn and which is my case was equal to calling a class by a instance
If it wasnt for my learning on sidelines I would have been out of game.
It's funny coz I am not JS expert or how browser work but they were discussing my work and what they asked and for and they didnt like it which I told them before doing it as a UX and UI POV but still the other peer poured his input, and I had to stop him to tell him what is a browser and object
TL took my analogy to explain the QA team. (which he wouldn't if he never understand or liked it)
@Nofel I appreciate that your current coworkers aren't the nicest bunch to work with by a big margin but do you have a problem with sharing skills and knowledge with coworkers in general or these specific ones? I ask because it seems to be coming off a bit like you think shouldn't have to teach coworkers unless they have a comparable amount to teach you?
@motosubatsu I have no problem, actually I encourage knowledge sharing (guess it is in blood as my parent one of biggest pvt insitute for last 25 yrs). My problem is that it should be a 2 way.
I have taught and shared my skills a lot but in reciprocal received less to none. I lack diplomacy I think
Bitter exp. When i was 20 ( I was on a job 3rd day and person who was gonna leave, was a amazing Adobe AE guru), I asked him how u do a Y thing. he said I spend 9000 and 3 yrs and cant share unless ur willing to pay that money to me.
but if they don't know anything you need to learn how can they reciprocate?
obviously if they do know things that are useful to you but refuse to teach then that's being an asshole but if they simply don't know anything that would be of use to you what are they supposed to do>
it is just a example, so they did a feature and I asked how to do it coz I have do edit things in that feature, Reply was "why, why u need to learn that. It took a lot of time to do that. Don't touch that. fwd me the changes needed to done and it is not important"
@Nofel you're not dumb.. and from what I've seen of you here in chat you come across as a good guy who is in a shitty situation. If I didn't think that I wouldn't put effort into trying to help you improve things
@Snow it's a lifelong dilemma.. I settle mostly for being a good guy to those I give a shit about and an asshole to everyone else. It's a compromise solution.
@Nofel possibly..but a big, huge point in your favor is that you have realised this and are working on improving them. Nobody is perfect, and striving to improve oneself is (IMO) a big part of what makes someone a good person
@Nofel it is but often contracts will be extended.. I'm on my third consecutive 3 month contract with the same firm
and 3 months at £350 a day should easily give you enough in the business account to tide you over for a month or so after it finishes and you can use that time to find another one. Hiring for contract jobs is generally a much, much faster turnaround time than it is for permanent roles
3 months is an average contract length. I've had 3 month contracts extended to 2 years.
One piece of advice - get yourself a membership with IPSE - "The Association of Independent Professionals and the Self-Employed". They have a bunch of documents about contracting and once a member you get some legal and tax advice.
@Nofel I've not heard anything to make me believe that's true.. if anything the instability surrounding brexit would make companies more likely to take on contractors rather than perm since it keeps them flexible
Did the "forgot my coworkers name" question get linked on an external page? Because there is no way that deserves to be my second highest voted answer.
I've found it difficult to fall on my face doing contracting. Just need to make sure you have something lined up - start looking between 2-4 weeks before end of current contract.
Workload depends on company and contract. Just make sure your contract protects you (get a lawyer to review it - it is worth the pay). That's why I suggest IPSE membership, @Nofel - they have your back.
Yep. It talks about his own experience and he goes off to the USA to see how they deal with it. I won't spoil anything by saying what happens, but it's truly fascinating.
@Snow i did.. but I had a couple of clarification questions - 1. Does Joe's power still work when he is unconscious and 2. Does it have a range limitation?
actually my "answer" is (I think) different from the typical ones you saw - I'd suggest putting Joe in a situation where a) he is isolated from day-to-day interactions with the general public and b) keeping him alive is the goal (but accidental death is a high probability)
My plan would be to send Joe on a solo manned mission to the moon - one way of course
he's not going to interact with people up there so no random "I want to kill that guy who is taking forever in the starbucks queue" moments, and he will have teams of people dedicated to keeping him alive and for the most part the general public will want him to survive as well
and my additional clarification question would be whether the knowledge that something would likely result in Joe's death trigger the power or does it require specific intent to cause his death?
@motosubatsu The interesting commonality I saw in the answers given is that no one made the effort to speak with Joe about what was going on. Everyone treated him as a problem to be solved. He never had a view or a choice in how any of those answers would have worked.
@Snow interestingly I thought of that but dismissed it because the question implied there was no way he could control the effect. I did think that sending him on a moon mission would at least be more fun than sticking him in a prison
@Snow and that would also satisfy keeping away from being wished dead by randomers if it were sufficently isolated
that raises another thought - does it trigger if someone wishes a group of people dead and that group includes joe (i.e. someone wants to kill all members of the religious order but has no idea about Joe)
@motosubatsu funny side is that while I told them everything and documented, they havent told what happens if one f them is not coming in that day
this recall a memory when other peer changed/removed something and I was on holidays andin scrum meeting it was old that he thought that X isn't comptiable with Y
@Nofel Just a tip, FYI, speak English as often as possible and avoid your native tongue whenever you can. You won't lose your first language. None of my family ever did, but immersing yourself in English works. also, read as much as possible, you'd be amazed at how much skill you pick up.
@MisterPositive I peeked at your "to do" list, it Just said "Take OCD medication. Take OCD medication. Take OCD medication. Take OCD medication. Take OCD medication. Take OCD medication. " Please heed it's advice
I am serving notice period in my organization, and a project manager has asked me to write down a document on what I have done. I have briefly mentioned the points on which I have worked, but I have not done any "in-code" analysis. He is not satisfied with the document, he says

Hi guys!
It's always been my hobby to write code and fiddle with computers. I'm having second thoughts though, I'd be very appreciative if someone could advise me.

@Snow I have headphone on to hear the documentry.
the crying child reminds me of me, when I little. I had pain clipping off my nails and no one would understand and instead my bro would lock my hand in his arm to trim my nails
so how that pain is still with me and I cannot trim my nails until hey r big
@Dukeling Good job trying to send the pee down the IPS drain. ;)
If you want to know how to respond, this might be an appropriate question for Interpersonal Skills, but in its current state it's just asking for opinions on the behaviour with no goal - whether it's "normal" or not won't change whether he does it. If the behaviour "feels off", my first assumption would be that he's doing it as a way to make himself less uncomfortable with the situation, or my "feels off"-dar is off - nothing to concern myself with either way. — Dukeling40 mins ago
I have a question. I don't want to end up with 10 closed questions, so maybe the chat will help. How do I learn about having a career? I ask questions here, but it feels like I am curing the symptoms. How do I learn about how to get promoted, how to avoid senior managers getting credit for my work? How do I stop asking all these questions? I am a bit lost.
@motosubatsu guys got problem with same thing which they didn't shared with me. lol, if they would have told me what and how it woks I could have helped but they r banging their heads
It is the Nadir of unprofessionalism in Information Technology to be derisive of another's code in such a fashion and it goes beyond the derision to the way you made the point.
It was done publicly, which is why you were pulled aside (virtually)
It disrupts a team.
It breads resentment.
