12:04 PM
@Flynxi It's too much for a cover letter, wait until the interview. BTW, I'm the prince of desperate situations. I came back from a stroke, homelessness and years being unemployed. You can do it, it just takes determination

@TheSnarkKnight Thank you for the encouragement :) it really helps!

People don't hold any of that against me because I use it to my advantage to show just how damn strong I am. "I faced this kind of adversity, I can handle anything you throw at me"

You must be quite a strong person :)

@Flynxi Use that youth and energy to your advantage. Don't be embarrassed by anything or people will use that against you. Be proud of who you are, confident, and determined and you can overcome anything.
Strong? Me? Determined is more like it. Too stubborn to die, too stupid to quit maybe, but determined as all hell

Like a tall Tyrion.

12:08 PM
@SnarkShark I was trying to pronounce that try-re-on until I went a googled it xD
@TheSnarkKnight That is really amazing though!

I had to google it to spell it...

@TheSnarkKnight So what cities do you think I would have a decent chance in? Or should I not go to a city?
I was thinking Austin, Tx?

The voting gods have not been kind this morning....the force is weak....time to go to the dark side....where they have votes and cookies.

My company has a location in Austin. No vacancies, unfortunately.
@MisterSortofPositive I apologise. Normal service will resume in 2.7 days.

Very sad, it is.

12:22 PM
@MisterSortofPositive this one will cheer you up....

Wow. Where does this shit come from? LOL

or this one, perhaps...

everytime I visit IPS my already negligible faith in humanity decreases that little bit more

Or we can ponder upon the irony of putting this on hold...

I don't visit that one @motosubatsu

12:27 PM
@MisterSortofPositive if you do you'll soon be Mr No Longer Positive

Aha. Mr DV has arrived. I see him on a daily basis; he's like the cat that shits on my lawn.
2

Your stalker friend?

Joe arrived, two minutes after Mr DV. no, it can't be....

Joe has been on for at least 15 minutes if it's any help. :)

Curious <drums chin with fingers>
On the plus side, I found the hidden stash of chocolate biscuits in the office.

12:35 PM
@SnarkShark say it isn't so!

If it helps, I upvote what I think are good/useful questions and answers. I don't downvote a lot, unless I see what I consider to be a particularly bad question/answer. I don't stalk anyone. If someone interprets my voting that way, I'm sorry for that.

@JoeStrazzere No intent here, I'm just bantering. You remain my Sir, Sir....!

All Hail Joe! ( Dilly Dilly )

@JoeStrazzere I have never seen you on my lawn.

@SnarkShark Looking back on my voting so far, I did downvote one of your answers that came across to me as advice to intentionally deceive an interviewer. Just being honest - I have rather strong feelings about that sort of thing.

12:38 PM
@Flynxi You have a decent chance in any city :) Austin isn't bad, and since you have family there, even better. Texas is doing better than most.

@JoeStrazzere Which answer was that? I might have been bad at expressing my intentions, or I might have had too much/little coffee at that time.

A: How do I avoid explaining the reason for my sabbatical in an interview?

Snark Shark I took some time out to be with my family This would be ambiguous enough for most people. You might want to subtly imply that a family member needed caring for, or that you were stressed in your previous job and needed some time to unwind and gather yourself. There's no much else you can s...

Thought it might be that. To be fair, the user is actively wanting to deceive the interviewer by not stating the reason for the sabbatical. If you exclude deception, there's no way of answering that question.

@SnarkShark I think there is a difference between avoidance and deception. I think JohnHC's answer was much better, and far more appropriate. Just trying to be honest here...

Fair enough. I deleted my answer.

12:45 PM
@SnarkShark What? I voted for that.

@SnarkShark that was the wall I came up against while trying to formulate an answer.. I couldn't quite bring myself to suggest a lie and the question is almost in Obvious Rule Patch territory in how far it goes to prevent the "correct" answer which is just to be honest

@SnarkShark why did you delete it? I noticed that someone seems to delete a lot of their answers. Is that you? If so, why?

It wasn't a bad answer...

@JoeStrazzere I told people that I had to deal with an illness in the family. I didn't mention it was mine

This one is on the line IMHO. Un-delete that sir.

12:46 PM
@SnarkShark undelete your answer.

Agreed @TheSnarkKnight

@SnarkShark you have multiple people with high reps telling you to undelete your answer, and according to the logical fallacy of appeal to authority, you must now do so.

If there's a better answer than mine, I'm always ready to step back. I occasionally delete my answers, but only if they immediately attract negativity.

@SnarkShark differing perspectives always help. Be a bit more arrogant. For example, I almost never think I'm wrong.

I voted to un-delete it.

12:48 PM
Besides, I'm too busy working out how to get my name change into chat.

@TheSnarkKnight since @SnarkShark could also be considered a high-rep user it's closer to being peer pressure :)

Hah! We are going to undelete it ourselves.

need one more please

@motosubatsu Okay, 50K PLUS users.

@TheSnarkKnight pedantry has been satisfied :)

12:50 PM
I'm thinking of changing my avatar to this....

@Snow
As in Snow from the Hunger Games?

No, not in my head. From GoT, but means pretty much the same thing.

@Snow I was thinking it was more along the lines of the weather - it's great fun when you're around but makes getting any work done rather hard?

Ah... Jon Snow...
good one

@motosubatsu No one, but no one will be tobogganing down my back, thank you very much....
2
@MisterSortofPositive More generic than that. "Snow" as a name means something in the GoT universe.

1:01 PM
@Snow I have read the books, what does it reference that I am missing?

Ok. Why isn't Jon a legal successor to the iron throne?

@TheSnarkKnight Ha! Nice.

@Snow Duh. Got it.
That is too deep to be amusing...
Jon Snow: "What's my name?"
Samwell Tarly: "Jon Snow."
Jon Snow: "And why is my surname 'Snow'?"
Samwell Tarly: "Because you're a bastard from the North."
Boom!

Someone might get it. And I wouldn't want to be outwardly offensive.

Some will some won't. Its a bit vague, unless you change your pic to Jon Snow.

1:04 PM
Nope. I like my avatar. It's one that's recognizable at most sizes.

I like your avatar too
I was thinking of using it too and changing my name to Winter is Coming

And even changing it to Jon Snow isn't what I'm intending here.

yes
your aiming towards bastard I think...
if not, I am lost...
which is not new

You have the truth of it now.
Although "The Hound" might have been better, darn it.
But then I'm not sure I want to be known for slapping teenage girls around...

LOL good point.

1:08 PM
"The Hand"? Hmmm, altogether different connotations there...

@Snow spoilsport :(

yeah, I would not use that one without the little pin thingy

There's some sweet irony in my answer on the "should I fix typos?" question being riddled with them.

nothing like imposing arbitrary restrictions to make someones job that much harder: workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/101111/…
@Lilienthal I assumed they where humorously intended

Hah, no, I'm not quite that witty.
But I only get 6 minutes per hour on this website so I tend to be writing against a deadline when I answer. ;)

1:10 PM
@Lilienthal foolish human.. I gave you the perfect out! :D

:)
Hmm, there are loads of tidbits I could throw out but this is awfully close to a list question that's difficult to pull off in this Q&A format. — Lilienthal ♦ 10 secs ago
^I guess this is on the edge of on-topic and the potential value of detailed answers overrides the inherent list-nature of the question?
Some specific practical points of advice for new managers is I guess reasonably scoped. Though you probably could still write a book about that subject.

@Lilienthal VTC as to broad..
at least IMHO

Back to the Wall for me. Later, friends.

Thinking of email my manager about my dentist appointment made 1 month back, but it is next day to our major release
good idea?

@Nofel when you say next day - which side?

1:15 PM
forward

Change the appointment. At least that's what I'd do.

@Snow Winter is Coming.

no coz it will be month ater

Evil means never having to say you're sorry

Ah,Today in meeting my manager pin pointed my is and are things

1:16 PM
Ghost, to me.

i told him if they want to baby feed them they shld tell me
he said yeah

Now put your sword away before you cut off your foot

who

ugh.... I love it when you give something over for testing, and they never test it, then notice a bug months later that would have otherwise been easily found

1:32 PM
hahha
sounds like my TL
he get angry, tell me to delete something and when it is demo he ask where is it
and i remind him bt he rejects the alligations

2:30 PM
always make a trail. Email him summaries of changes, etc.
Then when he asks something and rejects what you say, you can point to the email summarizing what he told you to do and that you sent it to him.

@Nofel listen to @ChrisE he speaks the truth

Kaz
2:56 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I may be using this currently in my job search. "You're 23, haven't worked at a name-brand company and have no degree" - "You're right, most people my age have only just left university and are working for a big-name company in some graduate scheme, whereas I've been promoted 4 times, helped build a company that's doubled in size every year I've been here, and have spent a year simultaneously working full-time and studying full-time."

Pfffffff. Managing is a lot more work than I gave it credit for. :)

@Lilienthal it's one of those thankless tasks

@Lilienthal Depending on the manager! Some manage to do loads of work but somehow still achieve nothing.

@RhysW same could be said of most roles though

oh definitely, not exclusive to managers
my manager hates managing, he just wants to dev

3:11 PM
@RhysW quite common where good devs get "promoted" to management for the wrong reasons
the two are very different skill sets yet many companies really haven't learnt that yet

It is that time of the year where I ask the question I asked many yrs ago "How much information should I give"
so deployment day, TL wants me to write step by step
of what I did and how can they do it

he's the manager because he was the only one here for a while. thankfully for him he still gets to dev, a lot.

while I donno shit abt thier deployment.

and he does a good job of managing, he just doesnt like doing it

@ChrisE He says "u dont need to email for small changes, If I or someone else is busy it will take ages"

3:19 PM
@Nofel if his objection to the e-mails are on the basis that he doesn't want to delay the work by you waiting till you get "formal" approval you can phrase the message more like "as discussed I'll do a,b& c changes to x,y and z. let me know if you need anything different or if this isn't right"
that should make it clear that you aren't going to sit there twiddling your thumbs till he replies but still covers your back

Gah. It's frustrating to see a rep notification, only to find that it's for a site that you don't really care about any more...

@Snow which site (out of curiosity)?

Worldbuilding. It's actually my favourite answer there, so not all bad in reality.

I like the idea of the worldbuilding site.. I've never really gelled with it for some reason though

It's mainly people thinking up hypothetical Sci-fi questions

3:24 PM
@Snow often with utterly absurd conditions

Of course. And everything has to be ripped to shreds because the question violates the root mean square rule.
But this is the answer in question here. I may have spammed this before.

@Snow "I want water to flow uphill on my planet, but i don't want it to float away, how do?"

@Snow haha.. worth it for the pic alone!

How does gravity work on my inside-out planet?
@motosubatsu If that photo of Picard didn't exist, then pretty much any Alan Rickman photo from Galaxy Quest would have done.

how do you defeat an unstoppable army that has literally no weaknesses and can never ever die, or be imprisoned, or reasoned with, or anything? then the asker will get pissy when people answer with with weaknesses he hadn't specifically excluded and apply Obvious Rules Patches to the question
@Snow totally.. loved that film, I should really watch it again

3:32 PM
I am slightly guilty of the same kind of question here although I thought it was a nice experiment.

@Snow you see I'd say that falls on the interesting side of the line

I think I have become a machine that turns pepsi max cherry into code

@RhysW have you tried the ginger variety>
?

I just ate a biscuit that quite literally turned to dust in my mouth...

@motosubatsu no , that also sounds vile :P

3:36 PM
@RhysW it may sound it but IMO it's glorious stuff

hey whats up guys

@Snow dammit..that WB Q has burrowed into my brain.. I'm now trying to "solve" it
@GrayCygnus 'sup Gary

Haha. Go for it. I'd be genuinely interested to see what you think up.
Right, I'm gone. Later folks!

@motosubatsu good good ... (its Gray not Gary)

@Snow the problem is that I'd have to read all 33 answers to make sure I'm not duplicating!
@GrayCygnus I'll try to remember that Gary
:)

3:38 PM
@Snow Later... Pete, Snow.. whatever :)

Cheers Gray. You have the controls.

meow
@Snow Acknowledge, over and out pshh

How much right do I have not to teach someone my work

@GrayCygnus you appear to be leaking air

given they dont tell me anything
when TL says

3:40 PM
@Nofel somewhere between 0 and none

coz last time It happens, few days later I was layed off

I was a lame sound effect for the sound Walkie talkies make when closing coms

knowledge sharing is an implicit part of pretty much any job

@motosubatsu i have a love of things cherry flavoured, so that might be my equivalent :P

my mrs suspect the same

3:41 PM
I prefer C##e over P##si

hahahah
nice one @GrayCygnus

@Nofel I'm not saying it doesn't happen because it definitely does but refusing to do it because of that fear is pretty much the same as refusing to do any other legitimate part of your job
if I had a dev working for me who refused to knowledge share when they were a single point of failure for something business critical because they wanted to ensure their own job security I would be seeking to manage them out of the business for doing that

Whoa I left a program running yesterday at 18:00... it is now 09:45 and it is still running... :0

Yea, u cant bring down business coz of one person.

@Nofel The email isn't to ask for permission, it's just summarizing the discussion. If he has a problem with that then he's intentionally avoiding taking responsibility and were it me, I'd start looking for a new job because eventually it's going to bite you in the butt.
You really don't want to work for someone who is afraid to have a verifiable record of decisions he's made.

3:46 PM
yea just got that
They really freaked me out and if it wasn't for loo call
I would have fucked up
now that I made deployment doc and had a meeting, I releaised it has a lot missing which I forgot
so I need to reformat it and tell it to manager
bt he is gonna be pissed either way to say sorry or not

@GrayCygnus I hope you didn't forget to output the result.
My heart broke a little for the above guy. :'(

lol, (checks in a hurry his code)
Yes I did, it actually outputs some Shapefiles and some GeoTiffs
it is a 12k x 18k pixel image, that is being iterated pixel by pixel and passing that so some ML algorithm.. I guess it should take some time

@MaskedMan oof.. that would be a real gut-punch

I read that example on TVTropes at Shaggy Dog Story / Real Life, by the way. FYI: @ChrisE ;)

@MaskedMan Yeah, that sucked but a) it's his own damn fault for not testing it to a thousand and b) by then he could run it on a Core 2 or Xeon and have it in a lot less time. and c) I call bullshit. no machine of that era owned by an individual is going to run for 7 years without an outage of some kind. Just didn't happen.

3:54 PM
@ChrisE I was about to say a)
Always go step by step, it saves you a lot of grief in the long run, rather than just jumping into the code and hoping that you can just wing it and make it work somehow.
About c) he might have exaggerated it a bit, or perhaps he wasn't working on a personal computer, but on a server at work or something.

even more bullshit
no way a p2 would be kept for even a year without restarting. If nothing else, it would need patches.
I submitted one to bash one time. I was actually in the chat room when this happened. Boy was she pissed too.

4:15 PM
@Kaz Great mobr@

4:27 PM
move

Hey @ChrisE I was searching on Meta SE something that could help for your Meta TWP question
but seems that is a subject that has been asked few or no times
(at least the posts I managed to search)
It could be a good idea to ask a similar question you did over there... what do you think?

@ChrisE the only systems that can run for years at a time are the old mainframes running COBOL. I agree with your BS call

If I get 3 UV and 1 DV I will hit Jackpot with my rep lol (7,777), I doubt this time Ill get that number

Q: How to answer the question "What do you dislike the most at the workplace?" from an interviewee?

THis is a VERY good question ^^^^^^^^^^^^
Wow, I've had 1.8 million people reached

Yes it is

@GrayCygnus if it doesn't get traffic, I'm going to put a big bounty on it.

@TheSnarkKnight Congrats, I am one order of magnitude below that Impact :)
@TheSnarkKnight I see potential on it

I would go with, "answering trick questions by interview candidates", because that really seems to be your issue here. :) — Masked Man 24 secs ago

still youll have to wait a day

4:45 PM
@GrayCygnus If I found myself as interesting as my rep suggests, I'd be considered quite arrogant. I don't really understand the appeal.

Seems that that user has 4 questions and 2 of them are Famous (one even has 300+ votes: the rubber duck one)
Whoa that I have never seen
How can Community Protect Posts??

@GrayCygnus What do you mean by protect posts?

320
Q: Can I talk to my rubber duck at work?

kukisI have noticed I have had great success using another co-worker as a metaphorical rubber duck (sometimes intentionally, sometimes unintentionally). It improves my productivity vastly. However, I know that it probably distracts others when I am using them in that way. That's why I want to buy a l...

@MaskedMan Protect, what i would cal Restrict ;)
But this one was Protected by Community, and I though that could only be done by 15k+ users manually

The system (via the Community user) will automatically protect questions under the following cases:

3+ answers from 3+ different low-rep users (users who wouldn't be able to answer should it have been protected) were deleted (for any reason)
Five answers from low-rep users were posted in the last 24 hours. Three answers on Software Engineering, English Language Learners, and Workplace, and 20 answers on Code Golf.
Stack Overflow only: Two answers were deleted by spam flagging.

The system will never auto unprotect a question automatically.
91
A: What is a “protected” question?

waiwai933What does it mean for a question to be protected? Protected questions have the additional restriction that new users are not permitted to answer the question. Unlike locked questions, they can still be edited, commented on, and voted on. You can even vote to close them. Why are some questions...

22
Q: What causes a question to be protected by the Community ♦ user

squillmanI noticed this question in particular, which has 5 deleted answers on it. The most recently deleted answer was deleted by a diamond mod 3 minutes prior to the time it was protected by Community ♦ Is there an automated process that causes a question to be protected by Community ♦ instead of a hu...

4:52 PM
Thanks captains
So given the case, Community can even Protect Posts before a user could do it (after a day i think)

@GrayCygnus Yeah, it could if @enderland would let it do so. :P

pfft! I protect them all the time
I think clicking "unprotect" by a non-mod should just pop up a dialog saying "Are you f**king crazy? No!"
2

Yeah, I've never understood why you would ever unprotect a question

@ChrisE but how would a bit of chaos get introduced?

Why would one want to unprotect it, what benefits do you get of it?

5:06 PM
@DavidK me either. It should be a mod power. Us mere mortals would only screw it up. :)
that's probably the only priv I have that I've never used. reopen, undelete, protect. but never unprotect.

Yeah, you should always use protection

this would seriously piss me off as an interviewer.

@ChrisE I don't know, I'd be impressed, myself. Then again, I like Chutzpah
but I am annoyed at the comment on my post. It's like a question on "How do I make a Chef's salad" Being asked and answered, and then a comment saying "but your answer doesn't account for the possibility that one of your dinner guests could be vegan"
@ChrisE you and joe made good points below that one though.

5:24 PM
@TheSnarkKnight There's a time for stones and the interview isn't that time because you don't know how the interviewer will feel about it. I would hate it. You wouldn't. How would the candidate know?

@ChrisE that's why I removed the first line and just stuck to a straight answer.

That's also one reason why you don't make jokes or wisecracks. The interviewer could be offended or annoyed or they could think you're a fun guy and a welcome addition to the team. Why roll the dice?

That's what GOOD comments are for, thank you.

I UV'd it before you did that anyway. :)

@ChrisE personally, I do joke around when I'm interviewing. I don't work well in stiff environments and would rather NOT end up in a situation like that again

5:26 PM
I will show that I have a sense of humor but it's light and only if I'm feeling a rapport already.

@ChrisE I once got a job because of a good joke.
I actually had that as an interview question once. "Tell me a joke"

Yeah, I would fail that interview hard.
I know lots of jokes but being put on the spot when I'm unprepared makes my social anxiety kick my ass.

So, I went to one of my standby ones. "A guy walks into a bar with a set of jumper cables around his neck. The bartender looks up, gives him a cold look and says 'Okay, you can come in, but you'd better not start anything'"

that's a good one.

@ChrisE I have plenty of clean jokes. like that for just such an occasion ;)

5:31 PM
I'd probably say "How many programmers does it take to change a light bulb?" answer is either "None, that's a hardware problem" or "It was working fine in MY office."
3
I know more jokes that I couldn't tell because the either wouldn't understand (mormon jokes) or could offend (political jokes). My favorite political joke is an old one. "John Kerry walks into a bar. Bartender says, "why the long face?"

5:46 PM
@ChrisE lol good one

Ok, I decided to make up a joke. "Knock, knock" "Who's there?" "Agile Programmer" "Agile Programmer who?" "Will be resolved in the next iteration"

...
I would not have hired you for that joke

@GrayCygnus Why not? That's pretty much what agile means. Remember my golden rule: never commit to yes or no, procrastination is the key to success. "Move to next iteration" is the "Agile" way of implementing my golden rule.

You say procrastination, I heard Technical Debt

"Knock knock" "Who's there?" "Network Engineer" "Netw...

5:50 PM
But yeah agile programming is strongly about rushing features and moving post-its around your Sprint Board

technical debt. what a bullcrap, meaningless term.

care explaining why?

The good thing about the "move to next iteration" is that trivial problems tend to get moved out forever, so people don't waste time implementing stupid things. In other words, often that technical debt is not really that much of a debt at all. Some such "technical debts" are just OCD of some powerful people, and in a non-agile environment, you would be wasting time renaming stuff and other "problems" which have no practical value.

So it is not procrastination but Priorities then?
you can safely move to next iteration leaving behind insignificant features or problems, but I would not try to do that if there is a big problem still unresolved. Unless you split it and handle it on separate iterations that is

@GrayCygnus Because it's not quantifiable. It's one of those terms that became popular a few years ago by people who make a living not doing actual work but coming up with patterns and processes.

5:58 PM
If the "technical debt" is a major problem, it should be fixed now, but using "technical debt" as a catch all for stupid things like fixing capitalization in code comments is just fraud.
2

Although you have a point, that would imply that anything that is not quantifiable is bullcrap
@MaskedMan agree, the term is quite abused, and people tend to use it for everything without actually pondering its value or importance

Too dang many BS terms out there

So the problem is not the Term but is misuse

If we want to be proactive instead of reactive, at the end of the day, we must actualize our new paradigm and move the goalposts back to create a quantitative synergy between out expressed goals and our interests moving forward.

Typical management BS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

6:26 PM
Is there a SE site for asking how to make portolfio
coz I got site that is going down and with my design its gonna be overhaul so I wanna save before and after

got a meeting. later peeps.

later chris
@Nofel sorry by portfolio you mean?
you could try asking on Meta SE under the tag

meeting cancelled. woot!

lol

meeting r teh suk

6:38 PM
Umm guys I have a ... funny question (stupid if you may)
Is there something similar to Meta Meta SE?
Or it is its own meta by definition
or could the Meta SE Chat be considered as Meta Meta SE

Yeah, Meta Meta SE is hitting your head with a hammer until you stop wanting to to go Meta SE

@GrayCygnus so I been working on overhauling one of major brands and while the old will go down, the new will come up
so I want to showcase in my portfolio of what was it before me ad after me

First make sure you have clearance to include that in your portfolio

@Nofel working as in paid to work, or as a hobby on your personal time?

paid to work

6:54 PM
ha, look at this question guys

Hmm, that makes it tougher.
I would do nothing but screenshots unless it was only internal and then I wouldn't even use that.

if its a public facing website then the archiving site will likely have what it looked like before, and as it currently looks would be the after. no morally grey area around using that then

7:17 PM
yes I know that
but I was thinking more of sreenshots

@Nofel You could always blur parts out. Still a pretty gray area though.

@GrayCygnus That seems like an overly complicated solution that will cause more problems than it helps solve

8:17 PM
@DavidK agreed
