Q: Requesting question be re-opened

AnthonyCould the SE Workplace community please review and vote as to whether this question can be re-opened after I edited it just now? I feel the first question asked "Why do companies restrict WiFi" is answerable in general. However, I do not feel the existing answer given by @RualStorge is complete....

4 hours later…
5:36 AM
please burn that Snapchat question down, not sure if spam or troll

6:31 AM
@GrayCygnus Well that LinkedIn question was fun to answer!

hello everybody

Good morning to you. Well, it's morning here - I have no idea what time it is with you.

@SnarkShark lol yea, its like trusting in Tinder Matches
@SpringLearner hello there

@SnarkShark its noon here

(its 00:30 here at home)

6:33 AM
where do you live?
@GrayCygnus hi ,how are you?

I'm in the UK. 07:30am here.

> It's the new "you are the 1000000th visitor"; it's absolutely useless – pmf 43 mins ago
that comment is gold
fine Spring, whats up
(btw I just ventured and asked a Q on Seasoned Advise here)
apparently I suck at making Milkshakes
well see you tomorrow guys, I am so tired

last month I got an offer from one company. we have a rule here that every company should provide form 16 which is considered as one of the valid proof that a person is working in an organization. My first company did not provide me form 16 as that time i was not aware of what form 16 is. Last month I got an offer from a company and they said that because I dont have form 16 from the first company so they are not going to consider the expereince of my first company.

@GrayCygnus Whole milk is what you need for milkshakes.

It was whole powdered milk

6:38 AM
Ugh. sorry, but ugh.

@SpringLearner so, can you talk to them so you can obtain that Form now, even though it should have been done before?
why don't ask it on the site? are you checking if it is on topic?
night people, see you later

I said ok but give me a work location of my preference. They did not give me my prefered location and released offer letter with a different location. So I sent them email saying I dont agree with your terms of not considering the expereince of my first company. However, I will accept your offer if you give my preffered location. After that I have recived any calls/email from them. Its been 25 days they have not replied. What do you think shall I call/email again?

Goodnight, catch you later.

@GrayCygnus I asked my previous company, they said that they can not give as its already 4 years gone
@SnarkShark good night, sweet dreams

Gray is the one going to bed. I'm just starting to work. It won't look good to my boss if he arrives to see me sleeping at my desk.

6:42 AM
ohh sorry
I thought you are going to leave
sorry again

No. I'm staying. I'm not sure how to advise you on the form 16 as I don't know the regulations involved (I never heard of a form 16 before now). You may need to seek some professional advice on this one.

ok
but will it be correct if I send email to the new company who released offer
should I remind them as I have not recieved any thing from thier side?

Hello all o/

Take some time to get some advice first, and then you will have more information to pass back. There might be a process to go through to obtain a new form 16 from your first company. If you say you're going through that process, it might help.

Hi @Flynxi

6:54 AM
I was wondering if this is a good place to ask for advice? I was reading that workplace.se.com is not really for personal advice and to ask here.
Although IDK why I can't use the same account I have for stack overflow much better reputation on that.

If you want some kind of workplace related advice, this is probably the place to ask, yes.
As for your reputation; your ability to answer questions related to code problems does not translate directly to your ability to answer questions on other subjects ;) That's why you have separate rep on each network.

If it's personal advice, then there's a stack called "Interpersonal Skills"

It's for career advice would I go to interpersonal skills?
@SnarkShark

Um no. you said "personal advice". I didn't think that meant "career advice", sorry.

Career advice you can try here, maybe someone can help :)

6:58 AM
Sorry xD personal career advice? (workplace.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2693/…) said to ask more personal questions here. Since they don't really help anyone in the future.
Okay I will just put it out there I guess :P

Sure, you can ask here. We'll let you know if it's more applicable to be asked on the main site.

@SnarkShark Awesome thanks :)
I'm 20 and I live in Hawaii. I was just let go from my position as Director of Technology (Small 15 person company I don't think it carries much weight) due to the market drying up and the company downsizing. I worked there for two years and before that as a I.T. professional (Mostly on dental and healthcare offices doing Dentrix and Hipaa compliance testing). Although Hawaii is a lot different from the mainland and I don't have any college experience.
There are really not many I.T. jobs where I live (Not on Oahu the main business hub) and my sister just moved to Austin. I really want to work at a company where I can get a lot of years under my belt but I have applied for a bunch of I.T. jobs and got no response or interest. When I didn't get any responses I started working on getting all 8 AWS certifications (I already have 6 working on the professional now). Being 20, almost 21 I could go to
college (I would go for physics if anything) but don't really know what to do. I don't have any parent's or relatives so I am stuck between a rock and a hard place and no one I know really gives me any advice. If I get all 8 of my AWS certs would it be possible to get a job in Austin or maybe another city? Or should I be prepared to go get a degree...
Sorry for the wall of text 0.o
Didn't realize I typed that much
If this isn't the place for this I am sorry ahead of time...
Don't really know where else to ask xD

Seems like this is the right place to ask. But I think one of our US members would be more qualified to answer than I am...

I agree with Erik here. Yes, this is a great place to ask this and we have several chat regulars who are IT guys in the states. However, you've caught the midnight shift here where the Europeans are more active. You might want to sit on this one and ask again in about 6-8 hours time.

Ah okay thanks guys :). It's hard to catch mainlanders since I am 6 hours behind but I will make it happen if this is the right place to ask :).
Will refine my question more
Thank you guys for letting me know :)

7:09 AM
I think you're doing great for 20 though. Most guys your age are still playing CoD and kegging.

Yeah, you're in an annoying location I guess. You're following US rules & regulations, but you're closer to the EU timezone :)

@SnarkShark Thanks!! I feel like I won't get anywhere though without college... That's definitely what everyone tell me anyway.
@Erik Yea and I live on the big island which makes it worse... I worked with a A.V. company as their director of technology and met some cool people with VERY expensive houses out here on the Kohala coast.
@Erik But that doesn't stop the laws here from being 20 years behind the mainland.

Auch. 20 years behind mainland US, which (from my perspective) is still at least 20 years behind the civilized world itself.

Sometimes actual workplace experience counts for a lot. When I was your age, only the rich kids went to university. These days, everyone has to go in order to get a chance at a good job.

@Erik Yea crazy laws out here... It is still legal for 14 Y/o's to marry (Just as an example) to people under 18.
@SnarkShark Yea I was hoping that my workplace experience accounted for something but I haven't gotten any interest from companies... I am REALLY interested in physics but I don't have any family to help support me through college. And due to how much money I made this year I would need to wait a while before I could get any help with money from out government.
:/
So rock and a hard place kinda.
@Erik Sorry if that was a weird law to bring up couldn't really think of anything weirder off the top of my head.

7:17 AM
And no jobs for volcanologists or iguana wranglers?

Haha xD @SnarkShark I am sure there is and if I have to take something like that to live I will. I am just really happy with I.T. and would love to stay in the field.

It's a weird example, but telling enough if you know it off the top of your head, I guess. I don't know exactly what the rules are for marrying under 18, but it's a really hard thing to get done.

@Erik It is a common occurrence out here if that tells you anything.

Man, it must suck having to work in paradise.

@SnarkShark I moved here with my parents when I was 17 and it was good for a time. Then my dad was diagnosed with Multiple Myloma and died about 8 months later and my mother had liver failure from drinking after his death...
So it has been tough.

7:21 AM
That sounds like a rough few years for sure, if you're 20 now...
My condoleances

Thank you. @Erik
I turn 21 April 19th.
I started working full time when I was 17.
How about you guys?
What countries do you come from?

I'm in the Netherlands. I actually have my last working day today, and then I move on to a new job

Oh wow! Congratulations! What do you do for work?

Real sorry to hear of your circumstances. You're doubtless aware that you would have made both your parents proud about what you've achieved so far with your life.

Web development, mostly backends.

7:25 AM
I'm in the UK. I work for a pretty big software company (one of those big companies that you've probably never heard of).

@SnarkShark Thank you so much that made me really happy :)
@Erik What languages do you use? I love python and used to love Feathers.JS
@SnarkShark What about you what languages do you use?

I'm primarily a PHP programmer (but I'm not a big fan of the language) and I also do Javascript (mostly Angular and a bit of Node).
Python is quite nice. I started learning for myself last week, but I like it's style already.

I do C#, Classic ASP, and SQL mainly.

@Erik I used to code in Laravel about 2.5 years ago for a couple customers when I worked at the I.T. company. Python is a really great language and is super powerful.
@SnarkShark I never really got into C# other than for unity. Do you like working with those languages?

I've been doing it for so long that I don't really think about it to be honest.

7:30 AM
@SnarkShark How did you get into it?

My specialism is a particular CRM platform and C# is the usual coding language for that. I've been doing this for the past 20 years or so. The previous versions of the platform was VBScript and VB COM, I then had to transfer to C# to keep up with new things.

Oh that is really cool! :)
Sounds like your really good at it if you have been doing it for so long.
@Erik Is your new job still programming?

Yeah. I wasn't happy with my previous company anymore (cultural differences, so to say), but I still like programming :) (Plus, it's much better paid than whatever other things I could do anyway)

Hehe. Don't confuse duration with proficiency...

@Erik How did you get into programming?
@SnarkShark Haha I definitely understand that. That I.T. company I worked for lost the largest client due to the "Pro" who has been in the I.T. industry for 30+ years doing a raid rebuild after he "Copied" the data off the server but never checked if it actually got copied.

7:39 AM
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a game designer & developer. So when I was 12, I bought a game development program and started playing around with it. (I was in quite over my head). Then when I was in university and realized it wasn't my thing I got offered a job at a gaming company I did volunteer work for, and I became a game designer/developer and needed to learn serious coding skills :)

@Erik That is really cool!!! Is your new job game development?

Nah, I left the business about 6 years ago. It's awesome to work in, but it's long hours, bad pay and little job stability. I had to support my family at that point; we just had a baby and my wife lost her job, so I needed better hours and more money.
Had I been single, I probably would've kept it up, but alas ;)

Game development is probably one of the toughest sectors there is.

Oh. Yea I heard the game industry is tough. I would love to get into programming some way or another but never thought to keep a portfolio of projects.
How old is your baby now?

Never too late to start keeping a portfolio. Open a Github account and push everything you do there. Easy backups, and a great way to have some content to build a portfolio from later ;)
My oldest kid is 6 years now. She's almost ready to learn some programming herself...

7:46 AM
@Erik that is true I have no excuse! I used to love writing in C and doing my own custom socket protocols.
Really!!! Omg that's awesome!! The next generation is gonna be amazing with technology.

That's definitely valuable work. I lost a ton of stuff I did when I was in my early 20s as well, but once you get used to pushing things to the web, it just sort of .... hangs around

Your oldest? Do you have another?

Yep, a 2 year old as well these days.

It is valuable? I always thought my projects where just dumb kid projects :/
Oh wow!!!! Congratulations/

I can't speak for everyone, but if I get an applicant who says "I build custom socket protocols in C in my free time" that's pretty much an automatic pass to the second round of interviews.

7:49 AM
Haha I don't really know what to or where to apply for that kind of work.
I have been programming since I was around 9.
Started with VB
And when I was 15 I worked at (stepper3.com) Stepper3 and learned how to design and build PCB's which was really fun.
I applied for a little over 40 companies in the pas month and haven't gotten any interest :c

Sounds like you've got a ton of knowledge. I'm surprised companies aren't interested. What kind of places are you applying at?

Austin TX, Seattle Washington, Southern California. Amazon, Intel, and large companies.
I don't really know who else to apply for I kind of always "fell" into work.
I have never had to go looking for work before and it is difficult.
When I moved to Hawaii our neighbor owned that I.T. company so I got a job there the day after we moved in.

Hm, aren't there more small, local companies? From what I've heard the bigger companies usually care a lot more about diplomas.

Then when I because a director of technology it was because they were a client of that I.T. company.
No local companies at all.. :/

Hm. I guess IT isn't really a booming industry on Hawaii?

7:54 AM
No industry except leisure, golf, and vacations for the big island.
And I am unable to afford honolulu.
This island has about 200,000 population
and close to 50,000 in tourists at most times.
The side I live only has about 40-50k of that population.
When I worked as a Director of technology I worked in very expensive homes doing AV and automation architecture and design.
I designed a theater for a golf clubhouse (The clubhouse ended up being $67M)

Wow, looks gorgeous.

Other than the aesthetics I design that room.
4k Projector, 28 point dolby atmos system.

morning people :)

Hi @motosubatsu

The whole room is also "floating" and concrete.
@motosubatsu Morning!!!

7:58 AM
@Flynxi <drool />

I might have some old photos of the racks let me check my phones.

@Flynxi I love a good home A/V setup.. I really don't have the budget (or house) for the sort of thing in that picture, but if I ever become a millionaire!

We did some installs for some crazy rich people.
It's the Kohala coast so basically filled with $1-60m homes
Did a lot of work here too (kukio.com)
No full rack pictures :C only backs of crestron equipment.
@Erik How would you suggest getting into programming if I wanted to go that route?
Like a job.
@motosubatsu i.imgur.com/H2J9o8X.jpg just bought this instead of a home entertainment system.
Although waste of money now that I want to move to the mainland :c

Hm, I've no experience getting a job as a programmer in a place with no IT industry. My first suggestion would be "move to where the jobs are", but I can imagine that being a big move if you're on an island.
And build a portfolio; show what you can do; visit programming conferences, and then apply for jobs with small IT companies. There's lots of them, they are fairly unknown, and many of them have a "hire anything good that drops by" attitude. That should get you some experience.
But I can't ensure that my methods work in your locale, of course. Unless you want to emigrate to the Netherlands, it might not work so well for you...

With everything going on in the U.S. right now I would not be adverse to moving to another country xD

8:07 AM
Can't blame you there, I guess.

I know what I want to do but being 20 I don't know where to go or anything like that so I am kinda "frozen"
That is why I wanted to move to Austin but it will cost me most of everything I have to move so its a one way trip.
@Erik That's kinda why I wanted to come onto this chat and see if I could get any advice.

As @Erik says going where the jobs are is pretty much an essential.. more and more IT jobs are offering remote work these days but if you are looking at a slight career shift towards the programming side then it's difficult to see a company wanting to take an entry-level coder on board on a remote basis.

Yeah, I can see you're in a tough situation. If you're open to emigrating to anywhere in the world, and doing any kind of work, though, there's organizations that accomodate that. But you might not end up in IT.
But you might make a lot of connections that way.

@Flynxi If you've got a location in mind already (and from the sounds of it you do) there's no reason you couldn't apply for jobs there from where you are now and state that it is your intent to relocate as you have family there

@motosubatsu I have applied for a little over 40 jobs and haven't gotten any interest :c

8:12 AM
It would reduce the financial risk exposure of the move - and you never know they might even contribute to the relocation expenses (you can dream right)

My parents just recently passed and my sister doesn't really have the room to support me and her lease doesn't allow anyone to live with her..

@Flynxi Hmm... that's a little high but not insanely so. I certainly wouldn't be taking it as a sign to give up. I would however make sure your CV is in tip-top shape. Also an oddity is that sometime employers filter out people who aren't local so a "cheat" is to give a local address on the CV, you could use your sister's for example

@motosubatsu I was using my sisters address in my resume :c Although I never have applied for places before more of "fell" into work so I am not really sure if I am writing the correct things.
I am also only 20 so I know that probobly doesn't help :c
But I will always keep trying :)

@Flynxi see, great minds think alike :) The CV/Cover letter could be an issue given your relative lack of experience in job hunting.

@motosubatsu I only have 3 years of work experience as well.. I.T. for healthcare for a year and director of technology for a small company for two years.
And no degree :c

8:19 AM
There's a lot of rubbish "advice" out there on the internet on those things and the job hunt in general but there's some good stuff too. Ask A Manager is a great resource for job hunt info, the author Alison Green is well respected in the world of hiring and she's written some well-received books on the subject as well that are well worth a look

I gotta run. @Flynxi was nice chatting you; best of luck in your job search.

@Erik Thank you for all your help nice meeting you too! Hope to talk to you in the future!
@motosubatsu Awesome I will go ahead and read that! Should I just search her name on amazon to find some of her books?

@Flynxi That sounds like a good foundation work-experience wise, the lack of a degree may hurt you a bit and having the Director title may be a problem for some as well - you risk being seen as overqualified (and therefore likely to jump ship very quickly)
@Flynxi You can order the books from the site :)

Haha! Didn't look at the navbar to see the "books" link my bad.

I promise I'm not affiliated with that site BTW.. I've just found it an invaluable resource myself as someone trying to navigate the world of work.

8:22 AM
Awesome thank you for the information!!!

Aw. I've resisted posting answers for ages now because my badge counter was on lovely round numbers but it seems I'm about to lose that lovely symmetry. :|

Also I was hoping that wasn't the case being "overqualified" Also only having 1 year and 2 years at a job hurts as well doesn't it?
@Lilienthal I have a lower number here as well but everyone has been really nice :)
(I have some rep on stack overflow but not much)

Back the "issue" of the director title - I think a well written cover letter can address it and make it into a positive. You can state that you are taking a career shift and that while the Director role was great experience (give examples) you are now embarking on a new career as a challenge.
That should make it clear that you aren't "expecting" to be going into a director-level role any time soon, and also that the job you are applying for isn't some stop gap while a "real" Director job turns up

Welcome @Flynxi, I figured you were new around these parts. :)

@motosubatsu That is good advice!! How do you decide what type of experience you should add on your coverletter?
@Lilienthal Yea I am new around here.
I was reading (workplace.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/2693/…) and saw that more personal questions should be asked here
Since they don't benefit anyone else really.

8:32 AM
@Flynxi its not the most exact of sciences - but really you should put in anything that is relevant to the job you are applying for. Obviously if you've ever done a same or similar job then you definitely reference those, for other things you need to think a bit more whether any of the skills you learned/put into practice there are transferable to the new role and reference those
"In my role as director of widgets I had to manage budgets and project resourcing to ensure that projects were delivered on time and on budget" would be an example of things that would be transferable to things like acting as a team lead or a PM. That kind of thing, obviously that's just an off the cuff example but I'm sure with a bit of thought you can come up with ones from your own experiences.

Kaz
Morning guys. Update on my friend: He had a massive stroke 2 days ago. He's still alive. He's relatively stable (considering the situation). The doctors have stopped talking about whether he'll still be alive tomorrow, and are talking a bit more about long term rehabilitation.

So we've dodged the first hail of bullets. And hopefully we make it through the rest.

@Kaz obviously the whole situation is terrible, but that's an encouraging update all things considered

I can't believe that I might have answered a question intelligently. I'm shocked at myself (at least until Mr DV arrives).

@SnarkShark don't be too incredulous.. you do kick out intelligent answers on a fairly regular basis you know!

@Kaz Sorry to hear about this, good luck with the future.

Kaz
8:37 AM
Thanks

@motosubatsu I put those other answers in the category of "stating the obvious before anyone else does".

@SnarkShark just because it's obvious doesn't mean it's not smart - often the smart part is in how you say the obvious so that the OP can see it

@Kaz I have a friend who's had multiple strokes - she lives with the "what I can do" rather than dwelling on "things I can't do". Still holding down a great family life.

and you're rather good at that, particularly at making it concise (conversely I have a tendency to ramble at points)

I have to make things concise to get things posted before the Positive one comes in.

8:40 AM
@SnarkShark true.. he's a quick little sod, I often start writing my answer before he posts but never seem to actually hit submit first :)

@motosubatsu Thanks for the advice!! I am working on my CV as we speak! Thank you for all the help!

@Flynxi any time.. it's what we are here for :)

@Kaz I don't know what is going on but I am sorry to hear what has happened, stay strong!
@motosubatsu Is everyone here "regulars"?

The OP here has an appropriate username given the question:
-4
Q: If I lie about a made up competitor's offer to get a raise, will they ask for proof?

GrasperCan I approach my employer and tell them that I got an offer from another employer and if they are willing to make me a counter offer in order to get a raise and make me stay? The point is this is a made up story and I'd like to see if my employer is willing to give me a raise and this way I ca...

Very lol

8:45 AM
@Flynxi most of the people currently here are regulars.. as @SnarkShark was saying earlier it's a little quieter at this time of day as those in the mainland US are mostly asleep at this point. Myself @SnarkShark and @Kaz are in the UK
I'm usually kicking about here most of the UK work day (obviously in and out as work interrupts my SE time) so if you've ever got a query, or even just feel like talking about random crap there's usually someone here :)
@SnarkShark if only there was a VTC reason that was "I find the OP morally contemptible"

8:59 AM
@motosubatsu Awesome! Never really knew this community existed you will be seeing a lot more of me :)

9:10 AM
@Flynxi Most people who frequent the chat are indeed regulars. You can click on the username and click through to their profile if you want to check. We do also have a number of people who jump into chat to ask for help with their question or just in general of course.
@motosubatsu Oh jeesh, he's actually arguing semantics on whether "made up" = "lying" ....

@Lilienthal I'd love to see a copy of his dictionary!

@Lilienthal I see that now I had thought clicking on people in here would just take you to their stack exchange.

Kaz
I've been less regular here recently. Far too much work to be spending time on TWP. But I come back when I need to, and I generally pick up chat pings.

@Kaz Can you just @ someone at any time and they get a notification?

just mention cookies.. that usually summons the regulars out of the woodwork

9:24 AM
I am guessing they have to be in the chat?
Lol xD

@Flynxi I believe they have to have been active in chat recently, not necessarily in it at the time. I'm not sure on what the threshold for "recently" is though, @Lilienthal might know

I do have a question for any developers out there. If I just start doing random python projects and posting them to github will it help my portfolio? Or does it actually have to be something that many people contribute to/ I contribute to for larger open source projects?

@Flynxi it doesn't have to be something that others use or contribute to (although those sorts of projects can seem more impressive potentially), the really key thing is that the projects are good demonstrations of your skills and knowledge

@motosubatsu Okay awesome! Thank you I am gonna start doing that then.

Morning all.

9:32 AM
@Nofel Good morning!

@Flynxi if you want to improve your code - especially if you are looking to publish it you might find CodeReview.SE useful
they are pretty friendly over there from what I've seen and there are loads of knowledgeable folks
@Nofel Morning!

yea don't forgot about what kind of question u can post
@motosubatsu sup with gravatar
I need to change my gravta too, it is lamp in my ex room

@motosubatsu Oh awesome never saw that before.
Thanks!
Just gotta come up with some projects now :P

@Nofel fancied a change.. I've been meaning to do it for a while

is that pawn?

9:38 AM
@Nofel nope.. it's card art from a Magic The Gathering card

wow it s mystical. I thought It was eagle pawn
I hope I am using the term right

lol.. no it's a Woeleecher

Oh I love these lines youtube.com/watch?v=NoAzpa1x7jU
like me talking to myself.

I love lamp

10:00 AM
Linux Apacha MySql and PHP? @SnarkShark

I do not speak those languages. They are alien to me.

Lol
xD
I <3 Debian

I code by putting dots at the end of every word. When I run out of dots, I put in a semi-colon and press return.

@SnarkShark coding by intellisense suggestions.. other than copy/paste from stack overflow it's how most c# gets written :)

Lol
I never used C# in any IDE other than monodevelope for unity. But I used to love intellisense when I was learning VB.

10:08 AM
but don't tell anyone that.. otherwise I'd never get away with charging what I do for my day rate :)

Lol

oh yea VScode is new love
with intellisense

@Flynxi coding C# in Visual Studio is teh awesomes

SO code does indeed form a large part of my code-base. Or at least a large part of the code that works.

@motosubatsu I tried it with unity once and it didn't include the unity api references in it so I moved to monodevelope since it was already built in. Although I think unity by default sets you to visual studio now.
for c# anyway

The only parts of that sentence I understood were "api" and "visual studio".

@Flynxi yeah they have integrated unity development into VS in recent versions

Was just reading through the side and saw that... poor guy.
@motosubatsu Does it give suggestions for the unity api? Or do you have to add something to vs?

@Flynxi ahh good old @MaskedMan - he didn't quite think that one through. It was pretty hilarious though. In the end one of the mods changed it back for him
@Flynxi I'm not sure to tell you the truth - I'm aware of unity but I've never worked with it

Ah okay
:)

@motosubatsu Either seven or two days, depending on how exact the match is:

A: What are the rules for when chat messages appear in a user's inbox?

balphaTo use you as an example: @TonyMeyer, i.e. an exact match will cause a notification if you've been in the room in the past seven days. @Tony, i.e. a first name match (to be precise, a word boundary match) will cause a notification if you've been in the room in the past two days. @Ton will notif...

@Flynxi Well, SE accounts are a true admin nightmare. You have a "master" network account. You have accounts per site. You have a chat account. All are separate and have their own number. Clicking through on a user takes you first to their chat profile. You can then get to their other profiles from there.

@Lilienthal knew you'd have the answer :) cheers!

@Lilienthal Seems like a nightmare I would hope they have a main pannel to handle accounts.

@Lilienthal and to further complicate it you can change which site account is the "main" one as well

@Flynxi I was showing that to somebody just last night. She was 21 for the moon landings, and it was awesome to see her light up at the idea that she'd finally get to see humans on mars within her lifetime.

@Flynxi @motosubatsu Just to be clear on this, I was OK with keeping that name for a month, and I didn't ask for the name to be changed back.
Anyway, the random upvotes on old posts have started flowing in. Normal service has been restored.

@MaskedMan I know.. I was just poking a bit of fun. No offense intended :)

There's another rep-fairy? Whoever it is, isn't a fan of mine...

@motosubatsu No worries. I was just playing along. :)

@MaskedMan are we going to out-polite each other now? because I have to warn you that I fight dirty

11:00 AM
@SnarkShark I have a downvote stalker as well. Can I get a badge for having an upvote stalker and a down vote stalker?
@motosubatsu You can promote a new meme now ... "Masked Man asks if he can get a badge for some random event" ... or something like this.
Can I get a badge for asking "can I get a badge" 10 times? What's a good name? "desperate badgewhore" perhaps?
Uhm does anyone here know what "heavily pregnant" means? You see, I have never been pregnant nor plan to for the rest of my life.

Kaz
@MaskedMan If I heard that, I would take it to mean "Very far along / Very visibly pregnant"

@Kaz Yeah, the OP of the question clarified that.

@Kaz That's awesome :) I hope she does get to see it. It will be amazing when it happens.
@MaskedMan So you wanted to keep the name I can has upvotz pleez?

OK, so here's my question: my team uses Eclipse IDE as a "standard" development environment and the task estimation is done accordingly. However, several times, I find it horribly slow and buggy, so just use gvim and get it done with. Note that I am am advanced/power user of vim, and my colleagues can't even hold light a candle to me. Is it appropriate/ethical/necessary for me to hide my "productivity secret" from my team?
It is closely related to our most famous question about ethics of automating job.
@Flynxi No I didn't want to keep it, just that I didn't ask to be changed back. Anyway enderland changed it and that was fine too. It is actually better since I get more upvotes this way. Oh the irony. :p

@MaskedMan The real question is why don't you teach than nano?
Jk.

The other good thing is I am now a little motivated to contest the next moderator election. :P Although it is still highly unlikely I will actually do it, I just like to stay away from troublesome responsibility and nuisance as much as I can.
@Flynxi I have no idea what you mean by that. :(

Nano?

@Flynxi sorry I don't get the reference.

No not a reference a packaged for linux
Well nevermind I guess it doesn't really hold a candle to vim

11:25 AM
Writing the big essay in the moderator "application" is the biggest nuisance, not that too many people would vote for me anyway. I am OK with writing big essays in answers though. :p
@Flynxi Ah, I see, the typo/autocorrect in your message them -> than confused me.

Oh I am sorry
I didn't even notice that typo.

Anyway, there's no better way of putting it, most of my coworkers are a bit of ... uhm, morons. They search for files in Linux using the GUI. I guess 'cd' is pretty much the only Linux command they know.
And they know it because some people who are not morons have written scripts that run only from the terminal.

If they are morons who can't use vim or don't want to learn what would be stopping you from telling people?

@Flynxi US IT guy here. been reading and catching up.
@MaskedMan maybe they should use VIGOR for the VI editor, :D

can I suggest a book in a answer?
Or is that advertising?
I am putting more in my answer other than a book but just wanted to add it.

11:34 AM
@Flynxi so long as it's not "Read this".
yes

Okay cool.

I've done that myself.

@TheSnarkKnight So what did you think about it after catching up?

@Flynxi reading over what you've written. I'd say move to the mainland then find a position. Hawaii has laws that are so hostile to business and ESPECIALLY IT,
It's a rough move, but you need to be where the jobs are.
I had to do move to the work myself.

@TheSnarkKnight Being only 20 and never really living on my own I only have about $25k to my name do you think that will be enough to hold me over until I get a job? Sorry if these questions are weird don't really have other people to ask. :P
Been living on my own in Hawaii but mostly with friends to elaborate.

11:39 AM
@Flynxi no prob. We are here to help
If you have any friends on the mainland, that would be ideal. 25K won't go far in the areas with the most IT jobs, but start networking with people, get the word out and see. H1-B abuse is being cracked down upon now and it is MUCH easier to get IT positions now.
Speaking of book recommendations, there is a job-hunting book called "Brag, how to toot your own horn without blowing it"

Awesome thanks for the book recommendation I am about to order a couple more books so I will add it to the list :)

You also may want to pick up a book on sales because sales techniques are VERY useful for job hunting, after all, you are selling something: YOU. I admire your drive and skill. Use your youth as an asset when you combine it with your accomplishments.
Youth are thought to be lazy, but showing your energy and achievements is going to get people to think "you WHAT????", but in a good way.
Two more books are "Rhinoceros success" and "What color is your parachute".

So then you don't think my youth will be a hindrance to finding a position? Also I don't really have any friends in the mainland only my sister who might be able to house me for a month but her complex doesn
oops
I uhm preemptively...
Well
She only leased a 1 person apartment and they don't want anyone living there with her. Although Idk how they could tell.
Do you think austin is a decent place?
Also I am going to check those book out too thank you for them :)

@Flynxi Youth is a hindrance, age is a hindrance. Don't worry about that. There's a sales tactiic of overcoming objections called the "exactly method" where you overcome objections by making them assets.
"Aren't you a bit young for.... " Well, that's EXACTLY why you should hire me, I'm young, energetic and have already done more than people who have a few years on me.

Okay I see what you mean :)

11:52 AM
"I see that you didn't get a degree...." That's EXACTLY why you should hire me, I had the drive and will to teach myself what I have learned, and why I will be an asset to your team, I go out and learn what needs to be learned and do what needs to be done

Hmm. I'm allowed to change my name in 50 minutes.
2

@Flynxi Also, remember that perspective is EVERYTHING

Perspective in hiring? What do you mean?

@Flynxi If you change their prespective of you to a positive one, it works wonders. Turn any questions and misgivings into a reason to hire you.

@TheSnarkKnight Never really thought about it that way. Always tried to wonder how I could make them not think about the negatives.
Should I be trying to add things like that to my cover letter or is that more for an interview? Or I guess it is for everything...?
