9:15 AM
Hello world.

Hello Nofel

9:40 AM
I am awake. Gruondhog day repeats.

@jserv Ned... Ned Ryerson?!

@motosubatsu Well this is embarrassing. I've never actually seen the film. I just understand the concept and know that is what I'm living through

@jserv you're dead to me :P

@motosubatsu It's okay, I'm dead to the world anyway
Okay, that was an attempt to be funny but was maybe too melodramatic
Seriously, this working for a wage business is starting to get a bit old

10:02 AM
@jserv they call it "the daily grind" for a reason :(

10:14 AM
There is an eccentric person at work who has CC'd me into a weekly group e-mail, the 'KPOP news roundup'
Apparently there are Korean boy bands who keep pets called sugar-gliders

@jserv sugar-gliders are awesome!

10:50 AM
@motosubatsu They're adorable. However this KPOP stuff is like peering into an alternate universe

@jserv yeah I don't have much experience with it but what I have seen tends to lead me to think WTF?
it's like the whole thing is one giant parody and no-one has realised

@motosubatsu I could not have put it better myself, yes it's like parody

11:08 AM
Hi @motosubatsu , was busy somewhere. did u spend time on ur xbox with that wheel?

11:25 AM
@Nofel I didn't last night actually.. the arthritis was playing up a bit so decided not to risk aggravating it. Used it loads at the weekend though :)

Oh I didn't know u had arthritis

@Nofel yeah osteoarthritis in my neck and right shoulder

spunds like my mom
but doctors have told her it is degeneration
of cartlidge, so she need to wear knee brace
well I hope you and my mom best of luck
only ppl with pain can understand how it is
so how was it on weekend (the steering)?

11:43 AM
yeah mine's a degenerative condition and there's no cure only keeping the progression of it as slow as I can and managing the pain. Hope you're mom is doing ok! Steering wheel is ace.. I've been playing (and enjoying) a lot of F1 2015 using it, even with the awesome Black Friday deal I got it wasn't a trivial amount of money to spend though

12:14 PM
@motosubatsu she us, thanks. Hope your slow down really slow too

12:33 PM
I can't hear anything under 50
Even though I am under 40
wth

12:52 PM
@Nofel ????

check out the link @TheSnarkKnight ^
tell me whats ur age then
:P

Couldn't hear anything but the first. I'm 49
@Nofel but I worked in construction when I was young.
If you ever worked in construction, live in a city, or have been exposed to loud noise, your hearing will be less

@TheSnarkKnight Same here, I couldn't below 50
whereas I am 32
14 days to go to 33

You've lived in cities, yes?

Islamabad, pakistan
manchester, uk

12:59 PM
Ah, you turn 33 the day before I go to see my kids

burnley, uk

@Nofel The noise of cities is actually enough to damage your hearing.

Nice, the joy of seeing kids.

I see them once a year

lol my wife would joke aout me saying ur dob is wrong. I knew u were 40+ as she jokes

1:01 PM
@Nofel I feel like I'm about 80

I hope u enjoy and make the best of ur time when with them.
hahha same here coz I cannot wake up early

@Nofel very much so.

just always 10 min before
and in night I m dead tired
cannot pray
canno study or do any house chores

1:40 PM
@Nofel you need to find some "me" time or you will burn out.

yes I miss gym a lot
wasn't like this but being jobless for a yr scared me
and I am afarid of wht is coming
what kills u most is when ppl throws tantrums at u
or talk on ur back
I even stopped dressing good (suite or formal) coz I thought I put so much enery in dressing that I might be failing (this is back in 2010-11

1:56 PM
@Nofel Yeah, as I like to say, "Don't borrow trouble". Worrying gets you nothing but sick.

true

@Nofel I know first hand. I was only a few years older than you when I worried myself into a stroke.

@TheSnarkKnight I am a slow learner which beats me and I fear it
1 month ago When I gave interview, I known 60 % of it, but I got to read some tutorial and do 20% more bt rest 20% which was the meat, I had to ask for help.
I been banging on that 20% whenever I get time and I got it now (not 100%)

@Nofel Don't focus on the problem, focus on the solution.

the whole situation scare me as when in interview, he said we use this a lot to talk to other elements

2:01 PM
What matters is that you get to that solution. You don't focus on the difficulties, you focus on achieving that solution.

yes, 2 days ago I was like "hw would I do it", 2 days later last night I did it without a weat
but part of me being slow learner freaks me
and what might come

@Nofel I am diabetic, hearing impaired, and autistic with a learning disability and brain damage that occurred at birth that causes other problems. I don't focus on those difficulties and neither should you focus on the perception of being a slow learner.
@Nofel I would rather hire someone like you who puts their nose to the grindstone and will work hard to get done what needs to be done than someone who is a hotshot.

but companies need a quick turnaround
nt someone who say "still need to find a solution"
and working on it. In past I had just been blank on wht to do

@Nofel No, companies want it done right. I suspect that you are not slow, but thorough.
quit doubting yourself.

2:16 PM
very, which no one want. I can see SO answers and I know I want it but I do not know how to coz I donno what is going on

@Nofel there's a place for you. you may want to look into being a trouble-shooter or maintenance coder. There is ALOT of work for that, and far less pressure to fix something than there is to make something.

I do create things and I love it
I guess like u said, focus on solution not problem
it is the wiring all wrong
the thought of when u see a complex code, ur like "sh*t I can't do it"

2:33 PM
@Nofel that's just fear talking. I've had to overcome a lot in this life. You don't give fear and doubt an in, you just keep going

I did too overcome alot. 10 yrs ago I never knew what I do now for living and It wasn't a big deal then bt as world changed it become clearer. I m not amazing but I am ok.
I guess we compare, If a 23 old would be good than me
I will think, wow look at him
blazing fast which I took 506 yrs to learn

@Nofel just keep hammering away until you get where you're going.

my next job will require me to use what I wanna focus my next 10 yrs. I am gathering, praticing all I can
yes @TheSnarkKnight that is that key
pratice, failure then more

@Nofel that's the way to do it, and yes, NEVER be afraid to fail, because you will, time and time again, THAT is how you learn.

yep.Although some things so quick to me
I intend to watch star wars movies this weekend for me time
Where I live, it is pretty inacessible for gyms and stuff

3:24 PM
Today's gonna suck. The battery on my mouse is dead and I have no way to go get one

Take day off

I get paid by the hour. that would cost me over $300. :)

in that case amazon prime to rescue?
300 $ pd?
or ph?

actually, about $360 and that's for an 8 hour day.

nice!
in that case u need to get amazon prime
to deliver u new mouse

3:36 PM
I have prime and being in atlanta they certainly would deliver but I would need to buy either $25 or pay $4.99 delivery and that would suck.
and I don't have another $21 of stuff I need.
great idea thogh
I was wrong, $35 minimum

ooi

@DarkCygnus zup
@ChrisE the perks of getting paid well

I get paid pretty well, but I also have to pay 100% of my own insurance which is 2k a month for just medical.
And tbh, I should be making more because this is the same wage I got 2 years ago, but I like the stability of this contract. It's going to go at least until the end of june. And 2.5 years for a contract is almost unheard of.
I'll just suffer through the touchpad today. :)
but if the battery isn't enough of a frustration, my wife has my Concerta. I gave it to her to hold on to yesterday and forgot to get it back. So now I have to take short acting Ritalin instead.

@ChrisE I recall you said you preferred Contracts am I correct?

i swear, you'd think it was mondays.

3:47 PM
Over salaried employment or equivalent to you

@DarkCygnus contract or contract-to-perm. I hate direct hire.

are contract more to do work?

direct hire is almost like an arranged marriage except the only motivation of the one arranging it is $.

I heard they give u hard time and work has to be really really good

Yes, contractors typically get paid more than FTE because those who are regular employees get to have the illusion of permanence.
I've never had a hard time as a contractor. I don't typically have the same level of comradarie, but I've never been mistreated. Been mistreated several times as an employee though.

3:50 PM
@Nofel Chris likes to fall in love first before getting married

I'm funny that way

;o)

the downside to contracting is that it makes it harder to get more work because they think you're a "job hopper". The contract I'm on should take care of that notion for the next job I get.
kind of hard to call someone 2 1/2 years at the same job a hopper.

that is why I waited 1 yr before looking for a new role

wise

3:52 PM
so my cv doesn't reflect job hopper
but the cv says a lot of small jobs
which I was laid off coz recruiters put me in wrong spot
so I cover em as short term contracts

Yeah, I see that we agree that one should try to retain a job at least a year to prevent being seen that way.

The problem is that a lot of contracts are 3-6 months.

They r expensive hence 3-6 mon I suppose
I wonder why some people have 3 and 6 probation period

6 month probation period is ridiculous. That's just abusing the employee. 3 is reasonable.
They do it because it's easier to can them.
Some places also limit benefits until probation is over. I won't work for them either.

Luckily the next place starts benefits right away
but probation is 6

4:12 PM
@ChrisE I'm a relic. I refuse to use wireless mice.
@ChrisE I like to go the temp-to-perm route. Because I don't have a degree, it's a way to get in the back door and prove myself.

Guys did you know that Masked Man "retired" from TWP?

why

yea I remember he mentioning something about retiring few days back

interesting....he mentioned something along the lines of being bored and had a goal. Which apparently he reached.

4:18 PM
@MisterPositive u didn't bought enough cookies
he might be sad

LOL Could be @Nofel
@ChrisE hello sir

that's only bout 290 downvotes to get him back :D
@TheSnarkKnight my favorite mouse is a usb cord mouse

@ChrisE it's not uncommon here in the UK to have 12 months probation on perm roles!

hello @Catija

@motosubatsu 12 months? wow

4:21 PM
@motosubatsu Wow

I'm basically an evangelist for that company because of how much I love their mice

I forgot MACs had mice

@enderland I'm still in mourning over the loss of manual windows in cars.
I remember the Commodore Amiga's three button mice. so nice!
Just observing things... I could NEVER do shog's job. God bless him, he must be ordering antacid by the gallon.

ditto. observing some chat rooms is entertaining...

@motosubatsu People overseas tend to sneer at the "right to work" states in the US, but there are seldom "probationary periods" in those states. It's also easier to get hired in those states as the employers know that if you don't perform, they can let you go. Therefore they're more willing to take a chance on you.

4:36 PM
anyone know what 'kibitz' means?

@MisterPositive it means to interfere by being a busybody

@TheSnarkKnight Oh.

Oy vey! What is with the Yiddish words now?

Well hell there are a lot of those LOL

@MisterPositive calling someone a kibitzer is a step down from calling them a yenta

4:39 PM
that is a new one on me too
yenta
hmmmm
sounds like a Jedi name

Yenta means gossipy old woman, often interfering, and generally not nice.

Learn something new everyday.

as opposed to a farbissiner which is a bitter person, or if it's a woman, it's a farbissine

I had to cltr+z my whole day code to find out that wasn't the issue with that file but something else
FML
have a good evening everyone.

4:55 PM
I realize that I'm so cynical and jaded that I make Marvin the Paranoid Android look positively optimistic but I worry that the OP here is being fantastically naive . Poor bloke :(
@MisterPositive yep.. it's been a thing at at least 3 companies I've worked at here

@motosubatsu that's why I jumped in with my answer to that one. PHEW! I hope he listens

@TheSnarkKnight yours was a good answer.. distilled down the essentials nicely. I don't think he gets it though, I had hope when I saw he had accepted your answer, his recent comments are making it look like a false hope.

5:11 PM
yeeee
lol, somebody went checking my recent answers, and happened to upvote some of them in sequence
Hey there @enderland how you doing?

better than I deserve ;)

I want to share this post with you, do you think it can be migrated?
-1
Q: Will it ruin my friendship with a person if they were to become my boss?

azurez27I am a software developer and have been working at my current company for nearly three years. A very close friend of mine, Bob, is also a software developer at another company, but in a more senior/management role. I am starting to get itchy feet in my company and would like to consider opportuni...

ips seems a good fit for it I think

@DarkCygnus that's what I was thinking.

@DarkCygnus I'd suggest it has a home on both here and IPS.. but given the leanings towards the friendship as being the primary area of concern I'm leaning towards IPS
I also want to scream "don't do it..for the love of all that is good and right in this world don't do it"

@motosubatsu yes that's why I think, as of now it fits better ips
@motosubatsu the answerer did lol

5:16 PM
That's nuts. But don't they have notice periods too? Here, you can fire someone for nearly any reason at any time and it takes effect immediately. Also, you don't need company provided insurance so that's a difference too.

@motosubatsu I had to push someone out the door, and I used those very steps, then I took a step back and let him fall flat on his face.

@motosubatsu my above comment is for you.

@TheSnarkKnight it's a great solid action plan.. unfortunately the OP seems to believe that a group letter to the CEO means that he will suddenly see the light, get rid of this guy and it'll all be group hugs and coffee in the break room. Despite the fact that the new guy's arrival has already seen one established member of staff elbowed out of the way and another director is leaving rather than deal with it.

@MisterPositive Hi :D
@DarkCygnus The main problem for me with that question is that the title is bad. That question can only be answered by consulting tarot cards. It needs some poking before being migrated. I also, personally prefer that questions be asked locally, so if there's any way to get the OP to ask it on IPS themselves, that'd be better. If the question does get closed for lacking detail or not being clear, it will be kicked back here if it's migrated, so we can't actually reopen the question.

@ChrisE yes.. although it's a little murky during the first two years of employment and employees aren't as protected as they like to think they are. Probation periods are a great get out clause for UK employers as they can "fail" you on your probation for anything that's not a protected reason (gender, disability, race etc)

5:24 PM
I'm not a fan of bouncing people back and forth between sites and I'm generally not a fan of migrations unless the question and answers really deserve preservation.

immediate firing is the one big area we have an advantage over US-style "at-will" employment as it can only really be done for gross misconduct here
that and the fact that the statutory notice periods are lopsided in the employee's favour :)

@motosubatsu wish we had that here. Even just a week would make a huge difference.

@motosubatsu this is why I think most regulations on employers are useless, employers usually find a way around the "fix" that makes the situation worse than it was before the "fix"

@ChrisE agreed.. a week might not be much but it's infinitely better than nothing

Yep. Nothing worse than finding out that your job is ending right now and you haven't even a moment to plan.

5:30 PM
@motosubatsu a friend of mine was definitely NOT fired for having MS, nope, not at all. Medical conditions are protected, and all that rot. Nope, he was fired for violations of the deliberately vague rules outlined in the employee handbook.
@ChrisE I can go one better. Your job ends RIGHT NOW, and security escorts you out of the building. Happened to me once.

in a job where I was bullied severely it was a complete shock. I'd talked to HR about it and they were going to schedule a meeting for the next week. My boss, who was out of the office came back just to fire me.
My wife had dropped me off at work and I lived 40 minutes away so she had to drive to come and get me 4 hours earlier than planned

@TheSnarkKnight yeah similar sorts of shenanigans here, a person with a protected characteristic would "fail" their probation because "it wasn't working out" or something suitably vague like that. as long as the company never mentions their protected characteristics at any point they'd be in the clear

Richard, that's what happened. He came to my cubicle, and I had to get my stuff. I couldn't even wait on the property.

@ChrisE damn.. that's cold :(

@ChrisE damn! was this the telecom with three letters?

5:33 PM
That's where I learned "HR is not your friend"

I've worked somewhere where there was an established pattern of hiring a load of people, work them very hard for just shy of twelve months and then through pure co-incidence none of them pass their probation

@motosubatsu Here in America, where they are so damn lawsuit happy, people are HIDING their disabilities because nobody will hire us anymore because they are afraid we will sue.

It's not AT&T. I love it here. It was Ansco, a subsidiary of Dycom, a public company.

@ChrisE good to know you're doing well there. Yeah, mine was for an executive search firm. Never dealt with them or the recruiter again. bad experience.

i've been here 2.5 years. Ansco was on the last day of my 90 day probation.

5:36 PM
@TheSnarkKnight people hide them here too.. mainly because companies either find an excuse not to hire them (and risk being stuck with someone who would be harder to get rid of) or deliberately hire them to fulfill some quota and then quietly drop them near the end of probation

@motosubatsu so much for being in a "protected" class, eh?

@TheSnarkKnight yep.. to be fair I think the protections do provide some benefit.. but the notion that they "solve" the problem of discrimination anywhere close to completely is a fairytale
assholes will always find a way to be assholes

@motosubatsu exactly. Personally, I'd rather know that an employer were jerks, and not be hired by them, so I could find one I'd WANT to work for than go through the motions, think I've got a job, then get "fired for cause" a few months later and denied unemployment.

6:29 PM
"I didn't get paid last month, I will probably not get paid this month either." Why is this even a question? Get out of there!! — David K 3 mins ago
Not on-topic, but seriously, this one's a no-brainer.

@DavidK time for my gif

@TheSnarkKnight No kidding

@DavidK I feel sorry for the poor sod though.

he deleted it anyway

At least he listened when told it was off-topic.
But yeah, it's a rough situation. Though it maybe could have been avoided if he told the boss from the beginning that he would need to finish all existing contracts.
It sounds like he just said "yeah, I'll stop"

6:37 PM
@DavidK yeah but a real dick move on the boss's part. It reminds me of the movie "Office Space" where they just stop paying the guy

he's an idiot.

@Catija I see. I also think it can be reworded a bit, but that is what I understand is expected to do when migrating (mods have to do that so it adapts better to the new site). I also think that post is not "trash", so will not break the golden rule of migration by doing so. However, now that some users have DVted it is true that it would be better if OP asked again on IPS direcly. Thanks for your feedback :)

@TheSnarkKnight Oh, yeah, boss is definitely an asshole
Wait, we can get chat flag notifications for other websites?

@DavidK chat flagging. the best kept mess of SE :)

@DarkCygnus Downvotes are irrelevant, though. A question with negative score has the votes cleared on migration.

6:46 PM
I think that after X minutes they are shown to all 10k+ users on the whole network

Strange. The one I just saw was for Mathematics, to which I had zero context to know whether it was offensive or not.

yep. like I said, best kept mess of SE
good luck reviewing it too if you try before it gets resolved lol

ha, yeah, it disappeared pretty quickly

@DavidK I wonder what would factor into getting a flag at the math forum. did someone try to divide by zero or something?
2

I have never actually managed to do a chat flag review, they disappear so quickly.
@Catija ooo good to know that

7:11 PM
Hmmm, seems that edit @IDrinkandIKnowThings did to the friendship post tilted it more to the on-topic side...

@DarkCygnus :D Sure. Never fear voting on a question that may be migrated. If it gets a 0 or better score, it keeps it, if it gets below 0, it's all cleared, even the upvotes.

flags also?

The flags should be site-specific, so if you've flagged something and a mod doesn't clear it, migrating it should clear it anyway... but I'm not sure because I don't know that it happens often.

I see
So many mod secrets... in fact SE itself has a lot of secrets and easter eggs
Funny thing, I have not written any answer in the past 20 hours, but still am getting closer to repcap today... HNQ of some of them maybe? unno

if ever there was a clear case to delete a question, surely this is it.

Q: Front end job interview process

Vitim.usI'm interviewing candidates for a front-end position at our company, candidates are not doing well, so I'm wondering if our test is flawed. First I ask a few questions about, what the person is currently doing, and what they like, how they got in the front-end landscape, etc... Then I give them...

7:24 PM
@MisterPositive It just was deleted lol

no way to say that one IMHO

@DarkCygnus What's a secret? The voting thing is actually explained in the migration FAQ on MSE :P meta.stackexchange.com/questions/10249/…

8:02 PM
What's the difference between a disputed flag and a declined flag?

disputed I think means the system auto dealt with it somehow, but declined iirc requires manual interventino

Disputed means that your fellow users didn't agree that it was NAA... declined is when a mod refuses it.

disputed probably is a flag that the review queue dealt with

8:23 PM
@DarkCygnus The question itself was always on topic IMO. Just as is often the case the title of the question was not reflective of the actual question being asked in the quesiton.
Can we do a recall of our mods for improper flag resolution. Specifically the reluctance to use the new Controversial post notice.
@Catija I suspect he means secrets as in things that most users do not really know, and are not well explained, rather than things kept secret to prevent users from knowing it.

@Catija yep, that what IDAIKT said, so many easter eggs
@Catija like this one for example workplace.stackexchange.com/reputation

@ChrisE a disputed flag can also happen when a mod clears spam or rude/abusive flags.
Otherwise, yeah, it happens when the verdict is 'Looks Okay' in the Low Quality Posts review queue.
Disputed flags also don't count towards a flag ban; declined flags do.

Mithrandir ... good username :)

Thanks ;)

8:38 PM
Is it mod Convention @ the Water Cooler or something?

Nah, I'm just thirsty

My last username was GrayCygnus... so I guess I was also Mithr
@Mithrandir lol

Help request before I make a meta post: What are the down sides to having the mod that handles a request displayed in the flag notice here: workplace.stackexchange.com/users/flag-summary

@IDrinkandIKnowThings 404

My thought is if a mod is unwilling to be named when they handle the flag they should not handle the flag.

8:42 PM
I haven't seen so many mods in here since the last time we were naughty
2

@DarkCygnus have to put in a user numberafter mine is 16 if you want to see it
@TheSnarkKnight someone must have flagged some comment

@IDrinkandIKnowThings ...that's not the way it works, though. That's just opening up the option for the user who handled the flag to go crazy at the handling mod.
It's hidden for the same reason that who suspending you is hidden.
If I decline a flag, I don't need the user who raised the flag to stalk me and bother me over it.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings were you here when Doritostyle was flagging every other comment I made until they told him to knock it off?
we had about six mods in here after that

@Mithrandir I guess I was thinking besides that one. If the user is going to be an butthead then they are going to be a butthead anyway. I would think anything beyond

If you want to know why a flag was declined, you can always ask on The Workplace Meta. Then you can get the input of the whole community, and there's no need to call out a mod for doing what they felt was right.

8:45 PM
asking for an explanation in chat or putting it in meta would be grounds for suspension

What the heck?

Asking why a flag was declined is grounds for suspension? Then I guess I deserve a suspension twenty times over :P

No i am saying that anything beyond that... like arguing that they are wrong
becoming a troll towards the mod etc

Why exactly does it matter who handled it?

8:47 PM

Perhaps one mod handled it. Perhaps another mod handled it. Perhaps Shog handled it. Perhaps a dev handled it. It doesn't really matter - it just matters that it was handled. If you want to know why it was handled the way the it was, you can ask on The Workplace Meta. But showing who handled the flag will only lead to more hassle for the mods and the mods have enough to deal with without annoyed users harassing them for declining their flag.
2

Because if there is one mod who is trending to have a bad handling of flags we can address that as a community.

Actually, you kinda can't. If a mod is consistently handing flags in a sub-optimal way, that's for the CMs and the mod team to deal with.

I think the secrecy of the issue makes it too easy for mods to abuse the problem.
Well it is something that ther community could bring to the CM's though

Instead of jumping to conclusions that a mod is abusing their powers, consider instead that perhaps you should think about whether or not you actually needed to raise that flag.

8:51 PM
We do not know if it is happening, and I suspect that we attribute bad decisions to one mod. Where in fact it is multiple mods and my(and others) expectations of how the flags should be handled may be wrong
fixing those expectations helps the community too

There are "why was this flag declined?" posts on MSO on a regular basis

@IDrinkandIKnowThings That's why I advise raising it on meta.

Any one flag (with a few exceptions) I have a hard time calling a single instance out on meta. And since we do not know who (even if its anonymised so we can see a single mod took the actions) its hard to take a bunch of flags that I feel were handled wrong and bring them to a post.

@Mithrandir How does a flag ban work and why?

@ChrisE The system does not put your flags into the que to be reviewed

8:55 PM

A: Allow recovery from flag hellban

Shog9Update: Kevin Montrose makes it happen The hell-ban is no more! Long live the verbose, obnoxiously evident ban! Kevin has implemented (more or less) the system described below. So the flag just stays in pending on your profile but the mods never see it.

that flag in question was explicitly discussed by multiple moderators, btw, and not unilaterally declined
