9:00 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings perhaps not, but I won't hazard a guess, regardless.

@TheSnarkKnight I would not confirm or deny anyway

there is no reason a post on MWP like "why was this flag declined?" would not be a perfectly reasonable and actionable thing. the thing to avoid is asking, "our mods suck, they declined this flag, lets replace them" because if the point of the post is asking for understanding why a flag was declined, then the latter part isn't relevant. if the point is the latter part, the "contact us" box is really the way to approach that as SE actually does monitor that
Reading this convo I'm not convinced that the point is purely the first there, it feels much more of a focus on the second part, which is why I'm not sure this convo is super constructive
It's also beneficial to not assume negative/bad intent initially as conversations are a lot easier that way

@enderland Do you really want me posting a question on meta every time a comment flag is declined?

in The Reading Room, Nov 14 at 18:51, by Mithrandir
I personally like that he brought it up on meta. I've raised enough metas about declined comment flags myself that I won't jump down someone's throat for raising one about one that I declined ;)

@enderland Thats the thing I do not think there is any actual negative intent. But with out seeing if it is multiple mods declining them then its hard to know if that is happening.
@Mithrandir I would not be surprized to find out that I was the most prolific comment flagger on any site other than SO

9:06 PM
I flag comments all the time.
I've raised 10k+ flags network wide ;P
besides, i don't think that anyone can beat stackexchange.com/users/4412195/crazy-ivan?tab=accounts
a Marshal on almost every site

@IDrinkandIKnowThings the primary reason your comment flags get declined is because comment flags are not offensive weapons within an argument, many times you (presumably... it's actually a major PITA to find who actually flagged comments) flag a series of comments in a back/forth that you have participated in as well and do not remove your comments prior to flagging

Hmm. I'll sometimes delete my comments and then flag the other messages with a 'The comment that this was replying to has been deleted." custom flag reason...
But that's only when I know that all the comments are obsolete/no longer needed ;)
For instance, when pointing out a mistake in an answer.
But trying to get one side of an argument deleted while keeping one side around is... not exactly cool.
And as such, shouldn't be in such a cool place as The Water Cooler ;)

A while back, I was, er.... advised to not get into back and forth in the comments and flag instead. I've got over 300 useful flags here.

...okay, that was an awful pun. Sorry :|

@Mithrandir we are cool... you should come visit use more often ;)

9:18 PM
@TheSnarkKnight yeah, extended discussion is the comments is pretty heavily discouraged.
@DarkCygnus ah, thanks ^.^

@TheSnarkKnight oh no you diiidn't
@Mithrandir it's specially fun when we are hunting for trolls (we have had an increase on incoming waves of them lately)

Just wait for sunlight, they'll turn to sunlight

@Mithrandir not only that, but bickering in the comments usually drags your answer down, especially if the person trolling you is trying to convince others that you're a jerk.
I know just a teensy tiny bit about trolling myself.

Yeah, comments can really derail and crash a great answer
In those cases I still get glad, as those are a free stream of unnecessary or chatty flags :o)
Even more if the user insists on posting the comment again after a mod deletes it

@DarkCygnus I remember one of mine attracting over 25 downvotes until monica deleted the comments, then not a single downvote after.

9:21 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I also had one of those. Monica stopped the DV avalanche

I've got 209 flags here (and is my 11th site my number of flags :P) without a single post here. Y'all get a lot of spam and comments ;P

It was partly cause I asnwered it before going to sleep, and some user's comment gained votes while asleep

@Mithrandir you aren't kidding about the Spam
@DarkCygnus yes, same happened to me.

My favorite one is the comment on the Bitcoin mining question (searching...)

Sleep?! Well there's your problem.

9:23 PM
@Mithrandir it was never a problem before they made me start taking the meds.

lol

Before that I never got more than 4 hours a night

This one was that post that comments derailed my answer: workplace.stackexchange.com/a/103088/73791
Still, Snow's was great

@enderland I always clean up my comments. It should never be acceptable for anyone to get rude in comments. If I was rude then i expect to have my comments removed as well.

9:24 PM
@DarkCygnus I am always amazed at which of my answers take off, and which get ignored.

@TheSnarkKnight Like your snark (but reasonable) one on the Game Cheats that guy planned to include on CV? (the populist one)

@DarkCygnus It was true, if the interviewer was a gamer, he would have reacted far worse than I did. But I think that burning the resume and using the ashes to fertilize poison ivy made the point.

@TheSnarkKnight its usually the ones that I am least invested in that get well received. I suspect because there is less of my bais sneaking in

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I suspect the difference there is "what is rude" and the question of "when is criticism constructive vs not-constructive" too

@enderland anytime the arguement becomes "I think that you are..." it stoped being constructive...

9:27 PM
@enderland I find that you can take a person out to the woodshed if you teach a good lesson.
@IDrinkandIKnowThings I flag anything that goes to the motive of the querent or respondant
if it turns into a bickerfest, then I just flag the post.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings perhaps, there's a lot of context necessary for that though -- "I think that you are missing X from this answer" is fine. "I think you are an idiot" (or the many variants people like to create) is obviously not

@TheSnarkKnight I do not have a problem with questioning motive. It is when they decide they are going to characterize my complaint/concern as just being a personal problem that I dislike. I always explain why something is an issue.
@enderland I get alot of declines for commetns that get deleted anyway... that really irratates me
Most of the comments I flag that get declined I am not involved in anyway. I just see the disaster and flag it because it has become(often never was) less than constructive.

I like alots

I find that rude and abusive flags are declined the most often

do you like alots a lot?

9:31 PM
Despite the comment being rude and abusive most of the time...

@Mithrandir hah hipchat has (alot) as that

@IDrinkandIKnowThings maybe cause it implies a -100 reps?

@DarkCygnus definitely

not on comments

@DarkCygnus It should...

9:32 PM
it'd sure make the association bonus a lot less useful here, lol

Personally get rid of the rep penalty. When you get a rude or abusive flag accepted you should get a comment ban on all of SE for X days where X = the number of r&A flags that have been accepted for you Site wide.
So if you go to other sites to troll you still get hit in your home.
@Mithrandir I can make an arguement for that being a violation of Be Nice btw

Oh?

decide to chide me on my grammer and word choice? Is that terribly constructive or helpful?
Is it more likely to provoke a friendly or confrontational response?

I'd say it's more poking a bit of fun at a typo ;).

grammer ... yeeee

9:35 PM
And what response I get depends on whether or not you assume good faith.

greater than average number of Aspies in here btw

imo there's a time and a place for choosing to make light of someone's word choices and in the middle of a fairly serious conversation isn't really that place

I find it the other way - lightening up the mood can be helpful

I say this as someone who works for a company where you get trolled with (alot) emoticons if you say that, too... so it's not something I personally find problematic in most contexts
@Mithrandir sure, but the way you did so was not clearly doing that vs just mockery

hmmm
sorry then, @IDrinkandIKnowThings - I should've known better ;)

9:38 PM
@IDrinkandIKnowThings For what is's worth your comments are almost always useful to me. I may not always agree with them, but still appreciate them most of the time.

;-)

Dilly Dilly

ok what is the origin of "dilly dilly" I feel so old for not knowing that
and I'm scared to google it, lol

I have a serious problem with what appears to be the game some people play of trying to play on the edge of "Be Nice" I do not think you did it maliciously but my aspbergers crys out that you were :p

> If you've seen or heard the phrase "Dilly Dilly" at your local pub or on social media in the last few weeks, you can thank Bud Light for turning the phrase into a cultural phenomenon.

bud light, figures cheap crappy bear would come up with a dumb phrase... :P

@enderland "Lavender blue, dilly dilly" ?

9:39 PM
But we have quite a few people on this site that intentionally be as rude as permitted in comments.

ok that typo is amusing as heck lol

@IDrinkandIKnowThings assume good faith ;)

yllid yllid
BTW just tried a new approach with my last answer. A mix of Kilisis but without snark, and some profit
Lets see how it goes

My humor can be a bit dry and is occasionally more biting than intended

9:41 PM
@TheSnarkKnight well, you're at the water cooler - give your sense of humor a drink ;P

@IDrinkandIKnowThings .... what is that. I'm glad I don't watch TV, commercials have gone to <redacted>

@enderland I hate the beer but they have great commercials

I have Amazon Fire TV, I don't miss broadcast TV at all.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings have a good one sir

we have a TV but I only watch stuff on dvd/bluray/stream (we don't even have basic cable lol)

9:43 PM
I don't have a TV

@TheSnarkKnight I want to cut the cord but I live in the middle of nowhere so if I get rid of cable I have internet prices that are basically the same as when i had tv bundled with it

@IDrinkandIKnowThings bud light is Spülwasser

@Mithrandir I am sorry... We are going to have to ask you to leave now... COMRADE!

:O But wait! I have Internet access!

@IDrinkandIKnowThings ah, for me, getting high-end internet is HALF the price of it all

9:44 PM
@Mithrandir we only have one because our basement didn't fit a projector nicely

@enderland Projector that plays televisions shows = television

well... we are watching Stargate SG1. so we're what a decade behind? lol

The only thing I use American beer for is cooking. I wouldn't waste a good German beer like that
@enderland ever watch LEXX?

@IDrinkandIKnowThings *hits leave button*

and, he did

9:46 PM
lol

@Mithrandir ROFL that was a joke

ASPIE WEDDING:

Preacher: Do you take this woman....

Groom: Where?

@TheSnarkKnight That is probably because you are in an area where there is a choice for internet besides the only cable company in the area.
BTW one of my requirements when we were looking for a new home was that it had to have an option for internet besides Comcast :p

@IDrinkandIKnowThings actually, I'm in a zone owned by one cable company. I would gladly switch if I could
@IDrinkandIKnowThings I have "optimum" which is anything but

@IDrinkandIKnowThings I know, but it was a convenient excuse to go do something else :P

Kaz
9:58 PM
Hi everyone.
I see I've missed some controversy.

Hmmmm, I'm thinking of making my next name change to: TOKEN EVIL TEAMMATE

Kaz
It's fine, I was making my own. I've just spent 4 hours drafting a letter to a CEO of our Back Office platform, explaining that they built 80% of something awesome, and then got distracted with new "modern" capabilities, and forgot to build the other 20%. And the missing 20% is really painful.

@IDrinkandIKnowThings that's not even beer IMO. It's just unflavored pee-inducing juice... that or beerpong material
(I now know why I got several votes today on a question I wrote a few days ago: TWP Newsletter)

10:14 PM
People actually read those things?

Judging by the votes received I guess so...
(I read it at least :o) )

1 hour later…
11:36 PM
Damn guys, need 5 reps to rep cap :(
(Frantically goes edit some tags without excerpts)
