8:21 AM
Morning people

8:36 AM
Good morning. Another fun week starts.

https://workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/103507/is-it-inappropriate-to-shout-for-a-bus-driver-to-open-the-door-during-commute - should I flag a question for migration if I'm not sure the question is appropriate for the target site?
Although that's mostly rhetorical, because I don't want to.

@Dukeling Seems appropriate for IPS, I think. Although the real answer is one of company policy...
I think someone needs to fire up the bat-signal to get it migrated.

Although I can't really see what anyone can add there. OP already said that it made everyone around him uncomfortable, so obviously it would be better to find a way to avoid the situation, like sitting near the driver.

I just flagged it for migration. It does seem like the kind of question that belongs on IPS more than any other site.

Once you end up in that situation, doing that seems unavoidable and it thus seems like another case of someone looking for a solution that doesn't exist.

8:44 AM
Hence IPS being the perfect place for it...

8:57 AM
morning all

It's my last full week of the year.

@Snow nice one... I've got two weeks left counting this one

I took next Thursday off, for obvious reasons...

@Snow ?

9:10 AM
What completely awesome thing happens on Dec 14th?

@Snow Last Jedi?

Exactly.

@Snow Foolish of me to not think of that... I'm planning on seeing it at the weekend as a few of us are getting together for it

Sounds good. I had a couple of holiday days I needed to take (or I'd lose them). Seemed a sensible choice to me. Hopefully, there won't be too many school kids.
I remember when I saw the Senna film when that came out. The cinema full of middle aged men watching the film in a respectful silence.

@Snow what was your verdict on that btw?

9:20 AM
Very moving. A bit one-sided, but you could see where his complaints were coming from. FIA was and still is a very political beast.

I didn't took a day off in the yr and I ask them to pay me for it
extra cash

@Snow indeed it is.. He definitely had some valid points about some of what was going on.. I still think the actions he took in Suzuka were unacceptable though, as frustrating as the situation must have been for him. Personally I found the film a bit too one sided, but that's probably a case of me carrying into it the baggage of the way the way people deify the man

Then again, he was battling against the establishment as well as the other drivers. There's no denying his talent, but he had emotions to match it. Plus, Prost did troll him a lot.

who we talking about

Ayrton Senna. Formula 1 driver.

9:31 AM
@Snow oh definitely.. I just get annoyed by the way that he is painted as being whiter than white all the time when he clearly wasn't. He had a long established "form" for giving people the option to either jump out of his way or get involved in an accident and he was also well known as one of the paddock's masters at playing mind games with the other drivers.
It's not that I think he was a bad guy or anything like that... I guess whitewash jobs just offend my sensibilities

Completely agree. Different times back then.

@Snow definitely.. Balestre was still smarting from the FISA-FOCA "war" IMHO and was throwing his weight around in the ways that he could.. the politics of the modern era are playground squabbles by comparison to the short of stuff that went on back then
and while I'm not saying that I agreed with the stewards giving into Senna's hissy fit over the location of pole it was definitely a bit of an odd thing for Balestre to intervene in such a direct manner

9:48 AM
It'll be interesting what will happen in the upcoming Liberty years.

@Snow yeah.. I've liked some of the noises Liberty have been making but it'll be a few years before we really see any impact from them to properly judge

I hope they force Dubai to change their circuit, or simply not use it. It's a dreadfully boring way to end the season.

@Snow yeah... it just doesn't work for cars that are as aero-dependant as F1 cars are
hopefully they'll change it rather than kill it off as it seems to be a really good facility in general

I've driven it in Forza a few times. There's just no "flow" to it at all. It's just straights and corners.

@Snow yeah..bit of a point-and-squirt track

10:00 AM
Shame really. It's a new track and the designer could have made something really special with it.

in related news.. I'm progressing through the championship season on F1 2015 and holy crap it's difficult to pass at Monaco.. I obviously already knew that from seeing it on TV but trying to work my way through the pack when I was upwards of 5 secs a lap quicker but just couldn't ever find room to pass rather hammered the point home

Yeah. It's nasty. You might have to resort to getting physical.

@Snow yeah "cutting" the first corner and barging people out of the way was the only real success I had - not something you'd get away with IRL

Or just beating people with pit-stop strategy.
Or starting from pole.

the latter was the plan... until I took my front wing off and punctured the front left.. just after the pit entrance at the end of lap one, cue an extremely slow limping lap and dropping to last

10:09 AM
ugh. tough

@Snow yeah it was a slog... worked my way up to about 14th and then got taken out in the tunnel

Kaz
10:59 AM
Morning everyone

Good morning.

Morning Kaz

I used to love racing games. I gave Gran Turismo 3 many hours of my life

@jserv I lost many, many hours to Gran Turismo over the years

I gave my soul to Forza 4.
And FM3.
My Xbox One started making "sick, death-whine" sounds yesterday. I initially thought "Yes, I'll buy the new one", but then it started working again.

11:06 AM
FM2 was my big timesink in that series - I picked up the all-singing/all-dancing edition of FM3 only for my XBOX to RRoD before I got chance to play it... by the time I had another I was too busy with work to really have the time to get into it. Now I'm gaming more (and have my swish new wheel/pedals setup) I'm planning on devoting some time to FM6

@motosubatsu You posted a picture of your setup, right? Looks fun

I'd really recommend the Forza Horizon games, Certainly more fun than Forza is.

I haven't really played computer games for the past five years, and I'm torn between thinking it's my loss (due to the great releases) or thinking that I've been able to plough hundreds of hours of life into other pursuits

Having a live-in partner really screwed up my escapism in so many ways.

@jserv yep... been loving it so far, spent far too many hours this weekend ensconced in it :D
@Snow I played a fair bit of FH1 and loved it... thought it really had a good sense of fun that the "proper" FM titles lack sometimes

11:13 AM
Forza and Gran Turismo were all about being 'driving simulators' weren't they?

Yes, the FM2 was a lot better, and FM3 even more so. There's tuning in there, but you don't really need it for the campaign.

I wonder if it's possible to buy a gaming set up with a full manual system, clutch and gearbox and everything

@jserv Depends on the settings. You could get Forza acting as a hard simulator, or tone things down a bit to make it playable. At the end of the day, it's a grind getting through the races.

@jserv yep.. I "lost the faith" with the GT games a bit after they mucked everyone around with the constant delays to GT4

You know what was fun as hell? Trackmania

11:15 AM
@jserv certainly.. the setup I have includes a clutch pedal and you can buy a gear shifter to connect to the setup. I didn't bother getting it since I rarely drive in manual on games anyway

It's not even about driving as much as a bizarre physics game

@motosubatsu That's awesome, moto. I would actually play on manual just for the novelty
I want to feel the thrill of stalling a car during a race

I always used to play manual in Forza, just with the automatic clutch. It's just about shift speed really. Automatic is slowest, full manual with clutch is quickest.

@jserv it starts getting pricey when you go for the full setup
personally I could only "justify" it due to the Black Friday savings

11:18 AM
I wonder if it would actually be useful in learning to drive a real car?

even so (and without buying the shifter unit) I still ended up dropping nearly three hundred quid by the time I'd bought the seat
@jserv depends on what game you used but with a full set up it probably would - it certainly feels "real" enough from my usage
to be honest though for the amount you'd spend on it you could get a hell of a lot of driving lessons
I appear to have missed the memo announcing "Make my career/life choices for me Monday"

@motosubatsu Maybe. Say someone takes 30 lessons, though... that can be up to £800 nowadays
Whereas a good setup like that would allow infinite hours of practice

Yes, but at improbable and illegal speeds....

@Snow Never played, but heard good things. I was a big fan of Road Rash
@Snow Could you smash another car out of the way trying to squeeze through an opening in real life, Snow? These are valuable skills to learn

As is drifting around corners.
Or T-boning other cars to save your brakes.

11:24 AM
@jserv it would.. but only practice at the basics of working the controls.. and I can't see it replicating things like the feel for a bite point in the clutch. Realistically it would only cover the stuff you pick up in the first 3-4 lessons anyway. The rest is all about doing maneuvers and dealing with the environment of real roads like traffic and signage and all that good stuff
@Snow which perversely is the exact opposite of how it works in real cars
in real racing cars anyway

@motosubatsu Perhaps the DVSA could come out with an ultra-realistic driving game in which you have to follow road rules
You hear the gearbox grinding if you attempt a bad shift

@Snow Carmageddon was awesome... as was Quarantine

The instructor gets flustered and annoyed if you make a serious mistake

@jserv the tech is there..they probably could create something that would be very realistic..but it would probably be unnecessary since even if it's 80% realistic it wouldn't replace real experience and we already have a pretty good system for doing that with driving instructors and lessons in real cars

@motosubatsu Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm sure someday it will become feasible not just as a possible, but desirable alternative

11:32 AM
@jserv I can see it getting there.. perhaps as a CBT-style intro course that people take before getting into a real car or as an evolution of the hazard perception tests
probably the biggest hurdle to overcome from a tech point of view is getting the AI for mimicking the behavior of other road users up to snuff
the physics etc is already very well developed as is the hardware to simulate the experiences (you only have to look at the sophistication of the simulators used by F1 teams)
I thought all the "Tell me it's ok for me to be rude/mean" questions had found their home over on IPS?

Q: Is it okay to share cringeworthy e-mails with coworkers?

AnonymousIt is Christmas time, and people are acting weird. My boss and a few colleagues are sending e-mails with jokes and Christmas quizzes and such. They send these to a lot of people, but only people they are in connection with. Is it okay for me to forward this to colleagues/friends that don't work...

Only idiots spread spam.

"Is it okay for me to laugh at my boss?"

@jserv it'll only be behind his back.. and that makes it okay right? <rolleyes />
I'm not touching that Q with a 10ft clown pole.. nothing I can add to the existing answers without violating Be Nice

I accidentally ignored my boss outside while getting lunch
It's a shame because I actually like him a lot

I got close to it by questioning his sanity...

11:41 AM
I've UV'd both @Snow and rath's answers though.. if nothing else the restraint shown is worthy of the UVs

Thank you sir.

@Snow You're welcome sir

I'm quite upset that a few Stack Exchange sites I'd love to see have already been proposed and shot down in Area 51
Political activism would have been an amazing SE, if it attracted experienced organisers

I'd love to see an espionage stack.

@Snow I'm not sure we'd have many security experts or covert agents divulging their secrets on the internet

11:48 AM
@Snow it'd be awesome.. I imagine it as an SE version of the "advice" voice overs from Burn Notice, of course reality would ensue and you'd just get full of creepers who want to stalk that nice girl from the supermarket because she's-totally-into-them-but-just-doesn't-know-it-yet and only by installing secretive cameras into her bedroom/shower can their true romance bloom into a thing of beauty

12:38 PM
Morning all...
@Snow Loved your answer on the dumb email forwarding...
@JoeStrazzere Hey there, how are things going sir?

@MisterPositive Morning.. you speaketh the truth on this one sir:
2
A: Including Freelance job in resume while working on a full time job

Mister Positive Is my concern valid? Based on my experience, you do indeed have a legitimate concern. There are some companies that do not care about freelancing (what you do on your time), and others will not like it. How can I address it? My advice to you is leave off the freelancing projects unle...

12:55 PM
@motosubatsu Thanks.

1 hour later…
1:55 PM
Sometimes coffee makes me happy. Sometimes coffee makes me irritable.

coffee is awesome

@jserv the dilemma of security is that teaching secrets is revealing secrets

you can dip your cookie in coffee too
@TheSnarkKnight Hello sir.

Coffee is proof that there is a god, that he loves us, and wants us to be happy.
@MisterPositive good morning.
how may I annoy you today?

1:58 PM
America has woken up!

@TheSnarkKnight Doubt you you could annoy me

Good morning, Americans.

@Snow cup of coffee #1 down!

@MisterPositive please don't give him that challenge! :D

I'm irritable already. I'd be no challenge. In fact, even typing this sentence has been a bit of a drag.

2:00 PM
@Snow America has New York, the city that never sleeps. Therefore America is always awake ;)
@jserv the wonderful thing about being Aspie is that all I have to do to annoy people is simply drop the filters I maintain in order to avoid it :D

@TheSnarkKnight lol.

@jserv People don't appreciate the effort I put in to not being a complete monster.

@TheSnarkKnight I certainly appreciate you not monstering me.

@TheSnarkKnight I appreciate you pestering @jserv

@Snow I reserve that one for IRS scammers. I tracked one down once. Poor Vijay [last name redacted]. All of his personal information in the hands of one very irritated hacker.
Fortunately for the scammer, all I did was forward the information to the Treasure department, the Federal trade commission, and his state's attorney general.

2:06 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Turn this into a paid service, Snarky. I think people really would hire you to track down these people.

Snark Knight is the Jack Reacher of online snarkiness. Mods want to be LIKE him, users want to be WITH him...

@jserv this one was actually in America trying to scam Americans. He probably was the front for and Indian or Pakistani group. Tracking them down if they're offshore doesn't do much good. That's what scam bait groups are for :D

WITH.....omg @Snow

@Snow Great moments of snark: "You'd be easy to spot in a crowd. All I'd have to do is look for two people talking. If one of them seemed terribly, TERRIBLY bored, you'd be the other"
"You fancy yourself quite the wit. You're half right"
3

I'd buy you a beer, Snark.

2:11 PM
@jserv I'm nothing. My hero is the guy who bricked the scammer's machine.

/me salutes
Oh, right, this isn't IRC

2:24 PM
I'm sorry. I just fell asleep at my desk. Did anything happen?

@Snow I destroyed several enemies and am now enjoying the sweet sounds of the lamentations of their widows.

@Snow LMFAO

@TheSnarkKnight Well done, sir.

See zem driven befour yoo

I'm sorry, I just got distracted by the freakiest question I've ever seen on IPS. Please don't ask me why I looked.

2:36 PM
you cannot help but luck @Snow You always look.

Don't judge me.

@Snow I would never judge....well...

@Snow I'm trying to help the stack mature. God help them when I'm the voice of reason.

@Snow which one? there's so many likely candidates over there

2:48 PM
@motosubatsu Since you ask (and this is entirely your fault) - "How to talk to my brother about a shared interest in pornographic furry material?"
Don't ask me for a link, I don't want this anywhere near my copy buffer.

@jserv They've made a spiritual successor to that, called Road Redemption

@Snow Nope. Nope nope nope nope nope nope.

@Snow So, what was your advice? Asking for a friend

@Draken Oh I've heard of that, looks fun but I just love the old games too much

@Snow oh that, yeah I saw the title when browsing earlier and decided that I was never, ever, ever clicking on that. Especially not on a work computer!

2:51 PM
@Draken Walk away. Don't look back.

@Snow So you're a tail kind of man? Everyone has their thing I guess

I am walking away now.

Whoops, I think my brow slipped. Let me move it back up a little higher...

3:13 PM
@motosubatsu I have created part 2 of my killers in the deep question.

@Snow I went off the rails about that one. Even the word p0rn can trigger some work sniffers

@Snow cool.. I'll take a look, part 1 earned me a populist badge :)

Excellent!
I would have tagged yours as the answer, but I was forced to change the angle of my question because people don't like questions with two questions.
And I already have my first hate comment.

Morning people
@Snow The day doesn't start until you get your first hate comment

Greetings.

3:21 PM
Oh, and good morning to all the bots also :)

Wiggywiggywiggywiggywiggyboop

@Snow that's okay.. the rep + populist badge were more than worth it
I've gone in a different direction for the part 2 answer

So I see!

mainly because the wording on part two stretches the plausibility of my original thoughts a bit

O sweet Mary I am losing my mind here. Some combination of boredom and anger.

3:32 PM
but also partly because it brings us back to one of the three classic motivations for murder & mayhem - money
One thing I do like about Worldbuilding SE is that unlike the majority of the network a bit of whimsy injected into the posts is considered perfectly acceptable

@motosubatsu agreed
Oh, lord, keep me away from the political places....
If I had one wish, it would be that all words ending in "ism" and "ist" would be wiped from the vocabulary for all time.

If I had one wish, it would be for a billion US dollars. All in singles.

@TheSnarkKnight I like it, Snark. A minimalist vocabulary.
2

@MisterPositive Old steve Martin joke....

oh, well I am serious.

dilly dilly!

3:38 PM
If I had three wishes, the first would be for an end to war, people should stop killing each other.... My second wish, would be to end hunger, no child would ever go to be hungry..... My third wish would be for ABSOLUTE POWER OVER EVERY LIVING THING IN THE UNIVERSE
^^^ STEVE MARTIN

Have you guys seen 'The Jerk'?
I love that one.

@TheSnarkKnight it's a solid answer to the three wishes question.. but everyone knows that the first wish should always be for "more wishes"

@jserv LOVE that one too. :D
@motosubatsu no, the first wish would be for the wisdom to make the best out of the next two wishes

@Snow ... and the bitchiness commences over on WB

@motosubatsu Where, I wanna see....

3:45 PM
your question could be viewed as story based if one were feeling uncharitable but it can be viewed from a WB question perspective (which is how I answered it)
@MisterPositive nothing too exciting.. just arguing over whether something is story based or not:
0
Q: What would drive people to kill in the deep?

SnowDateline: 2067 Setting: A research base at the bottom of the Marianas Trench Depth: 10,000 meters. Mission Duration: Thirty days Note: This is a follow-up to my previous question: What would drive people to risk death in the deep? A research base lies at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, ho...

which really seems like splitting hairs when you look at most of the Qs over there

@motosubatsu Could you be a chap and delete your answer to that question? I'll then be able to delete the question. I looks like it's going nowhere now that the lynch party has arrived.

@Snow Screw em. Why delete it.
( I just put out the effort to vote! )

because that's who I am.

3:51 PM
LOL

@Snow I added one

FiNe
I voter for @TheSnarkKnight answer too

I would sooner die than allow them the honour of killing me.

@Snow done

@Snow @motosubatsu awww man!

3:52 PM
(although if the Q ends up living I'm so putting it back)

lol... @TheSnarkKnight please allow me to fall on my sword...

@Snow Never! We'll get it resurrected! Once more into the breech, dear friends, once more into the breech!

Such a pitiful death I go to. I hate it when they win. I would rather take that power away from them.

@Snow nah, argue for resurrection in Meta.
never let a good idea die, especially when you can cause a stir while doing so.

They live in the meta.
There, it is done. They will rollback my rotting corpse and stab it with the final VTC.

4:07 PM
@Snow one reopen vote already. I wonder who could have done that. hmmmmm

The problem is that reopening the question won't remove the "die die die" comments and the general smell of death.

4:39 PM
Hello fellas
@TheSnarkKnight I remember that dialogue and his husky voice
which movie was it
@Snow I will have to watch all Star Wars which were told by u guys before I catch onto the last jedi

Hello @Nofel what's up?

@Nofel ?

@TheSnarkKnight sup
@DarkCygnus just a monday flew so quick I didn't had any idea what I did
@JoeStrazzere hw u doing mate?

@Nofel which dialogue do you remember? Sorry, a bit unclear

@TheSnarkKnight tapping out of IPS for today

4:50 PM
@MisterPositive me too

@TheSnarkKnight "Careful boy, I am old for a good reason"

Not getting in any fights

New job, new apartment, and now new car
I feel like I will fall on my face

4:52 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Later sir.

Cookie
@TheSnarkKnight I am worseing my maths for some reason
cant add money fast or do fast
any book for that?
ur my go to wisdom friend!

@TheSnarkKnight speaking of fights. Last Friday almost got into one when I went out to have some drinks

@Nofel I'm fine.

@JoeStrazzere I'll keep praying for you. I don't know if it will help, but it can't hurt.
@DarkCygnus I'm very punchy lately. My stress level is through the roof. Too many developments. My SO's nephew has been dxed as bipolar 1 (the bad one), Getting ready to fly 2000 miles to deal with the Ex so I can see my girls for christmass, dealing with my brother's death, our company just got bought, and my health is failing.
Diabetes is raging out of control, which affects my mood.

5:08 PM
@Nofel he may be talking sense here.. with so much change going on I'd be tempted to wait a few months until things settle down

@TheSnarkKnight :V damn I should have punched that guy in your name then!

@TheSnarkKnight sorry to hear of the confluence of dramas :(

Honestly, I'm so used to all this crap that it's not even getting to me that much
@motosubatsu I look forward to the possibility of some day, being bored.
I once tried to sell my life's story as a country music story. It was rejected for being too sad

@TheSnarkKnight meh..boredom is overrated
@TheSnarkKnight and the tale of that rejection would be so sad that it would probably be too sad for Vogon poetry

@motosubatsu Boredom is God's way of telling you that you have no serious problems at the moment.
@motosubatsu I finally got around to seeing the movie. Other than Alan Rickman as Marvin, it was a total bore.
The fellow who played Ford was a total git

5:25 PM
@TheSnarkKnight I actually remain the only H2G2 fan I know to have actually enjoyed the movie

@motosubatsu I think it took itself too seriously, which is a bad thing for a comedy to do/

most of the criticism I see from other fans is about it not being "faithful" but to me that misses the point - Douglas Adams always enjoyed giving his work different spins in different media and that's what he did with the film
"taking itself too seriously" is probably the furthest thing from my mind with it really.. but YMMV

@motosubatsu THERE, we agree. The radio serial was different from the book was different from the movie.
no problem in that. I just didn't think it was done well. more Marvin would have helped though
I love the way Rickman delivered the lines though

Rickman as Marvin was utterly fantastic IMHO
I'll agree with you on the casting of Mos Def as Ford though.. that was the one that really fell flat for me
Martin Freeman in "clueless englishman" mode works for Arthur and Sam Rockwell was just the right amount of outrageous as Zaphod
also could you have asked for a better Guide voiceover than Steven Fry?

@motosubatsu I always saw Ford as being kind of like The Doctor with obfuscating insanity but really being The only sane man in the room

5:36 PM
@TheSnarkKnight yeah agreed.. I always thought of him as being someone who comes off a bit kooky because he's been exposed to all the differing insanity across the universe and therefore has no compunction to adhere to any given social contract

@MisterPositive strange fellow that Phallanx
You can't edit your own answers!! Remember that

5:49 PM
@DarkCygnus yeah....we were typing at the same exact time. impressive amount of content you produced ;-)

@motosubatsu true bur too much temptation 😩

@MisterPositive That guy needs a chill pill

uh yeah....

Yeah, I think I was actually typing a bit before you did, that's why my post was a bit longer.

i think because of his comments no one got a vote...

5:54 PM
Did you see the comment he posted under my answer?

wonder who said that to him...
troll alerts starting to ring...

It may be in his head....or a troll!

@MisterPositive take you UV good sir

hells bells were being trolled.....
ditto
my comments are deleted on that one.

5:57 PM
@MisterPositive "I'm just helping you see the timing mistake :)"
Are you aware of your mistakes now

yeah...hilarious...

@MisterPositive free unnecessary flags :D

LOL
I love flags
Fun with Flags, with sheldon cooper.

@MisterPositive Where? where where?

6:10 PM
@DarkCygnus er..... where can I get some of what that guy has been taking?

6:49 PM
Am I the only one who is amused by the irony that an autographed copy of "Das Kapital" sold for 218,500 pounds?

7:45 PM
lol

2 hours later…
9:50 PM
@TheSnarkKnight Thanks. I think I mentioned before that I'm not a believer. But I truly appreciate the thoughts, and if prayer is your thing, I thank you for that too.

@JoeStrazzere yes, you mentioned it and you said you didn't mind, so I will continue to do so. I do hope you get through this time with few difficulties and have a full recovery.

10:23 PM
Good night everybody

Night @TheSnarkKnight

1 hour later…
11:50 PM
:( seems I'm not going to cap today
shame, just 2 UVs
