Absolutely - unfortunately, that question became a mess because it was 25% about concrete things SE can learn from, but 75% opinions and speculation about something that happened on another site. In an ideal world I think we'd post a tighter question, like "Can we learn from the way Wikipedia solved its controversy with Fram?", and invite Luke to transpose this excellent answer that is actually based on the facts of that case. — user56reinstatemonica8 5 secs ago

"if someone, or even a group of people, says 'This causes me (emotional) harm' for it to necessitate policy changes? ... What's to stop me from claiming that "using neopronouns causes me emotional harm"?" No no no, you are not allowed to do that. Those sort of statements can never be generalized. Discussing what's going on with the platform is not what's threatening the platform. Neither are coordinates avatars and user names; they're probably mostly ineffectual. SE has broken every promise to the moderator in question and the community; that is threatening the platform. No one is seeing Monica as a goddess, what a ridiculous claim. She is an individual who has been treated very unfairly. We care because a) that's wrong and b) it could really have been any of us. — Pekka supports GoFundMonica 21 secs ago

I think it was a very useful post; it's no surprise that similar problems keep arising among disparate communities. It's human nature, and we would all be well served in examining how other communities and companies handle those issues... what can help, and what can destroy. Learn it so we don't repeat it. @MichaelKohne True, but the idea is that users can restrict anything that they believe irrelevant. For other examples, the holiday hat thing and the yearly survey and results generally get notifications, and I'm sure some users would rather not be bothered by one of all of those. @overlord-ReinstateMonica - I'm all for keeping the pressure on... everyday... for months... until an official apology and retraction is issued as part of whatever legal comprise is reached. Don't let anybody forget or get comfortable. But tagging posts like that breaks a rule, and breaking rules gives the mods and CMs an excuse to delete it, to lock posts, to ban people. @metasnail - Sure, so you moderate a tiny site, and you think that maybe everyone is exaggerating because your small puddle wasn't shook when the rest of the pond shook. I get that. However, when you start looking at percentages, it is a much different picture than the small puddle. 75 moderators, from a group of 171 sites, is a third of that group, and representative of the community moderation effort. The community moderates far more than individual moderators, which you should know being a moderator. The combined effect of diminished action is undeniable, and evident across the exchange. — Travis J 58 secs ago

I’m sorry, but moderators unilaterally closing it twice and then claiming there’s enough controversy that it requires a lock isn’t exactly equivalent to the community having a problem deciding what to do with it. It seems more like some of the community disagrees with the moderators’ view. Which is fine; not everything that is popular is good for the site. Let’s just not pretend that the moderators were somehow uninvolved in making it a “highly disputed” question. — ColleenV 12 secs ago

"Why are both Wikipedia and Stack Exchange both pushing now for inclusivity for women, minorities, etc., rather than in the last 10+ years?" That's a really good question and maybe worth it's own question thread. On the other hand I would like first to establish that that really is the case. The pronoun rule is hardly noticable in practice and as a side effect also increased the feeling to be at risk. It would be interesting to discuss how inclusive SO really had become. — Trilarion 2 mins ago

@MichaelKohne That's the problem, who gets to decide what is "actually important"? Some users might think the annual survey is a nuisance while others think it's important. If you want to say only impending downtime should get a banner that's fine, but others might think topics outside the availability of the site are also important. — David Starkey 42 secs ago

The sandwich technique is not used by most companies, and especially not by successful ones. The trend now is towards retention in all situations as companies attempt to build social coalitions - regardless of if that person is an employee or not. If something needs to be said, don't sugar coat it; say it as honestly and truthfully as possible, and attempt as much as possible to be ready to listen to the response it elicits in an earnest and empathic manner. Then move on. — Travis J 2 mins ago

@Trilarion Agree we should separate out the post-September environment, so I'll set those events aside. The voices I find squelched the most on meta is the middle crowd, somewhere between 10 and 10k rep. Neither power users nor help vampires (though often lumped in with the latter when people are arguing against changes). Changes like increasing question rep and putting a temporary cap on the displayed negative score (like reddit does) can benefit this group, but based on the reaction to both, I don't think asking meta beforehand would've gone much differently, even in January. — Troyen 38 secs ago

@Trilarion Power users can provide valuable insight, but their experiences and interactions with the site/community are different from everyone else's, so if a change is proposed that targets a different group and the power users strongly disagree with it, but the company goes ahead anyway (to help that other group), I think the reaction would be worse than if it wasn't proposed in the first place. Now you get complaints that the community was overruled instead of the community wasn't consulted. — Troyen 8 secs ago

Absolutely not claiming the company is blameless here (especially not with recent actions), but I can see why they may not want to bring some changes to the community for consideration. The simple fact is that the vast majority of participants on the Stack Exchange network only care about getting answers to their questions. A smaller minority like providing those answers when they can find decent questions to answer. I have asked elsewhere: "What isn't a neo-pronoun?" and I consider the response "Nothing isn't a neo-pronoun" to be a legitimate response, but I would like to see it explicitly stated. If there are series of characters (or glyphs) which are not neo-pronouns, then again, I would like to see it explicitly spelled out what isn't a neo-pronoun (and, ideally, why not). — Rounin says Je suis Monica 27 secs ago
