I think hiring a lawyer is the wrong approach. People sometimes erroneously think that lawyers (civil at least) is about getting justice. That's rarely what happens. Civil lawyers are about one thing, and that's money. You can certainly sue them... and then several years later, after everyone has long forgotten about this it gets a day in court? Don't waste your energy on the justice system. Suing SE isn't going to change SE. — Steve Sether 1 min ago

Define "toxic" first. The word toxic is always used, when people are not sure what they are talking about, but think it must be something bad. When you try to narrow down what you're talking about, it will be much easier to decide if it really is (negative attribute) or not. — allo 2 mins ago

When you allow made up pronouns (and all neo pronouns are, when you're pedantic, the classic pronouns are as well), there is no way to troll it. When you choose something obscure as your pronoun on a site where everyone can demand his favourite pronouns, there is no good reason to call it trolling. What would be a proof, that "attack helicopter" is trolling or not? What criterion would make a proof for a pronoun valid or invalid? You would need to judge other people's personal boundaries, what is not up to you. So we either need to allow everything or just stick with classic + neutral pronouns — allo 1 min ago

@faintsignal I didn't say that. It isn't black and white, or all or nothing, lawyer or do nothing. Likely trying to put pressure on SE through moderator actions is a far better approach if you want change. SE has a bazillion dollars and a large amount of time to just throw at this. When confronted with an enemy, don't fight them where they're strong, fight them where they're weak. Generally corporations are very strong with regard to legal fights. — Steve Sether 22 secs ago

The main problem I have with this whole thing is that it's this odd private matter, that's turned public. To understand what happened, I essentially have to rely on hearsay, and summaries from 3rd parties. I don't get to decide for myself who the bullies are, and who the victims are. I don't really have any reason to diss-believe what Gilles is saying, but then again I don't hear any opinions from "the other side" (A a rule I try to resist dividing arguments in two). — Steve Sether 16 secs ago

This whole business about whether multiple genders exist is pretty irritating since I don't think anyone's actually disputing the material circumstances at all. Surely we could all agree on the set of ways people are born, and the set of way people can become after birth through various means, physically. (And if someone didn't, we could be called upon to manifest, and conclusively manifest, an example thereof.) And the same should be able to be carried out in terms of what describing other people's pronoun desires-- no one is arguing whether anybody WANTS to be called "they" or not. (cont) — Ejaz 2 mins ago

(cont) So it seems that the real argument is not about what "exists" or not, but the manner in which various words should be used. Ie should they correspond in some manner to one's secondary sex characteristics, and if so how will such information be obtained, and when will the inquiry be consider sufficient to have made a reasonable attempt at appropriate determination? When I inspect the image element above in FF and Chrome I get a max of 672 at the "normal" desktop display size, and 713 when the window is scaled a bit smaller (and the right sidebar reflows). Since it's unlikely a user will size their window to exactly that size where the 713 max occurs (a range of just 41 pixels), I would consider the 672 figure to be the "standard" max - the one that's actually likely to be seen. Of course, we're talking CSS pixels, so actual image pixels should be double that (1344) to support Retina. Example syntax: <img src="https://placehold.it/1344" width="672"/>Mentalist 40 secs ago

That said, taking into consideration what you mentioned about each site on the network having its own varying CSS, inspecting a maxed out image on that given site to get the width in CSS pixels (and preparing a x2 image for Retina) is the way to go. Using your example: Search "test" it drops the 2nd search bar, and the reason is probably due to Teams; because if you repeat that search (without blocking 'Team results', if you are on at least one Team), like this: Search "test" the 2nd bar is dumped, because having multiple ones would be weird. — Rob 36 secs ago

"It seems our current voting system is like democracy; it's not the best system we can create, but all others are worse." To me this sounds mostly very catchy. I am not at all sure whether this is true (at least it is not well founded and slightly fallacious). Democracy is not always the best system (it depends on where and when it is applied). The voting system has equally problems depending on the era and place. What we see now is that the system grows out of proportions and for most posts the voting becomes a faint sign. Most posts only get 0,1,or 2 votes. Most posts arent differentiated. — Sextus Empiricus 1 min ago

@void I was born in 20th century as well. I've been using singular you since secondary school, while not being a native English speaker. Nobody taught me it, I just picked it up while reading and I asked someone about it just to be sure. I've been using it for years and nobody minded before the whole "singular they is wrong" emerged. As for some governing authority, you're right, there is none, but big dictionaries add the definitions and usages for singular they and neopronouns, so maybe it really returns and means something? +I never said default he is wrong, just discriminatory. — h4z3 2 mins ago

I have added an additional graph to the question. It shows that the voting system is doubtful as being similar to democracy in terms of 'all other systems are worse'. What the image shows is that the voting system is probably just as worse or even more worse (except that the voting system creates gamification, but in terms of the point 'good content rises to the top...incorrect content falls to the bottom' it does not do much good). It's like democracy in a corrupt landscape. — Sextus Empiricus 1 min ago

@SextusEmpiricus, I am not sure my equating SE voting and democracy really is true. Systems are build to get a certain result. The wanted result from SE is different then from me; I want questions answered, SE wants more money, users and be more inclusive. I hope they don't exclude one an other. — Flummox - don't be evil SE 2 mins ago
(I consider it in this case as an analogy being equal with 'the least worse' and not with 'democracy' because voting here is indeed not democratic) Very often people come up with the argument "the least worse" argument. However, this is a bit pooh-poohing away any criticism that is more like argumentation that are more like going into the direction that the democracy(/voting system) is defunct or not present and are about improving the democraticness(voting) of the system (you could say it is a bit fallacious like: person A argues corruption is bad person B says yeah but it's democracy) — Sextus Empiricus 19 secs ago

Hi Nat100, welcome to Meta! I'm not sure which search brought you here but the problem you describe will not be answered on this specific site. To get an answer from users that have the expertise about the topic of your question you'll have to find and then re-post on the proper site. Check How do I ask a good question and What is on topic on the target site to make sure your post is in good shape. Your question is definitely off-topic on Meta and is better deleted here. — Glorfindel 5 secs ago

@h4z3 Don't get me wrong. I'll fight for your right to use singular they, just as I'll fight for everybodies right to express their identity in any way they like (that includes pronouns). In return I expect those same people to allow me to keep writing the English I grew accustomed to. That default he is descriminatory is your (and SEs) oppinion. Again, I'll fight for your right to hold that opinion, but presenting this opinion as a fact, excluding all other viewpoints, is quite frankly not nice. — void 31 secs ago

@h4z3 As far as I can tell it's still the case that nobody minds that you are using singular they. People start objecting when SE tells them they have to do so as well. SE left it each user whether they write American English or British English (or any other variant), now they started to enforce a particular way to write for a particular issue. It's not surprising to me that this doesn't go down well. I guess big dictionaries will add these usages when enough people use them. At that point it's OK for SE to recommend that usage (but demanding everybody use that language is still wrong). — void 39 secs ago

Hi Thomas12, welcome to Meta! — Glorfindel 2 mins ago

Of course I judge content! That's one of the primary things to do. Yes, I took the time to downvote this post. That doesn't mean I, or anyone else, is obligated to point out why. These comments are exactly why that is. Posters that haven't read the rules, or care about meeting standards aren't looking to improve; they're looking for targets to attack. Not worth my time. You don't want downvotes? Try to meet the standards. That's it. — fbueckert 2 mins ago

When there is not already a comment on the question, I post one before I vote to close to make the user aware of possible issues. If there is already a comment on the question that represents my objections, I just vote to close. The first vote to close should always comment on the issues. The company has stated on several occasions that meta is not a conduit for community interaction. Meta is (dis?)regarded as a small subset of active, vocal users who do not sufficiently represent their broader audience. To their mind, they are listening to the community through data, research, private complaints, Twitter, etc. It's just that meta is not the community; it's a privileged, elitist, scornful minority. — I am Monica 1 min ago

Following up with @Galastel's comment, Monica has even chosen a charity to which she will donate any surplus funds gathered. If Stack Exchange decides to make everything right, most of the thousands of dollars will be donated, save the retainer and a couple other fees she already paid. If Stack Exchange doesn't, that money will go to lawyers instead. Seems like a win all around to just work directly with her to make things right. Well, except for the lawyers. — Davy M went to fund Monica 57 secs ago

The question has been locked by a mod. This is the third time a mod has intervened. Journeyman says he's convinced the issue will be brought up on MSE, but if the lock was done silently, and the OP seems wary to intervene, should we just let sleeping dogs lie? Yet, this question was not among the most controversial, it is on-topic because it is comparing how two different managements banned or removed someone's status. Did one company do it better, more professionally, more transparently than the other? The post should be reopened. What do you think? — Mari-Lou A 15 secs ago
