@Jesse_b That's not a "single quote", it's a single quoted C-string. Backslashes will be interpreted in these (by bash).
@Jesse_b "Words of the form $'string' are treated specially. The word expands to
string, with backslash-escaped characters replaced as specified by the
ANSI C standard. Backslash escape sequences, if present, are decoded
as follows: [...] \' single quote"
@Jesse_b And that is a double quoted string, not a single quoted string. Well, it expands to a single quoted string, but not in the sense that it is a single quoted string in the shell. It's just a bunch of characters.
07:53
I have no idea why that comment with my name on it has 3 stars. Or even 1 star.
@FaheemMitha Well, one of the points of a cloud based system is that it's not local, hence one doesn't install it. It's a simple misunderstanding that comes from not knowing what a cloud (in computer terms) is, or it's an omission of the word "own" (as in "ownCloud"). The net effect is a humorous question akin to "How do I install the Internet?".
08:33
if you omit all the intranets, the residue is the cloud.
i'v read an article about an eventual end of the cloud. Lemme dig it out.
@Kusalananda Thank you for the explanation.
I think he meant a piece of software. But I have no idea why he was asking me.
He was so pretentious to install all the cloud from the beginning, in case it ends over like the prophecy said.
@FaheemMitha I suppose he wanted to get something done and asked the last person that was active in the chat.

1 hour later…
10:34
@Gilles done
11:01
@Kusalananda right, la
I've asked about OwnCloud twice before. Last night certainly it was omission of own.
@FaheemMitha I tagged you, cuz there are known unknowns.

1 hour later…
12:31
@Kusalananda I know, as I said I was just trying to be difficult :-P

2 hours later…
14:55
echo does not interpret -- to mean the end of options.
$ echo -- -e 'Hello\nworld'
-- -e Hello\nworld
Hi, folks.
@FaheemMitha Salutations
@Jesse_b Try saying hi. You might find you like it.
@FaheemMitha Greetings?
@Jesse_b Hmm. Still not hi, but ok.
Hi @Jesse_b. How are you?
14:59
Konichiwa @FaheemMitha. I am alright, you?
Well, I injured my cat last night and I can't stop stressing about it
@Jesse_b Oh, sorry to hear about your cat. What happened?
He got under my recliner and I reclined it
he is limping now but I don't think his leg is broken, the soonest vet appointment we could get is not until tuesday
@Jesse_b Yikes. I suppose with small animals, accidents will happen.
We used to have a little dog once. She narrowly missed death at our hands a number of times.
Yeah it's scary because they seem to always want to be under foot or sitting on chairs
I have sat on my cat so many times
@Jesse_b I guess you need to be paying a lot of attention. Do you just have the one cat?
15:13
@FaheemMitha Yeah one cat and a dog/cow
@Jesse_b if you would sit on my cat you would afterwards remember to check any chair you want to sit on, did this one and needed 17 stiches on my backside to get it fixed, even i had a jeans on
@Videonauth ouch
she is not even big or such, but her claws are like razor blades
Yeah cats claws are no joke. My dog is afraid of the cat
yeah my neighbours dog stays always in safe distance to my cat

1 hour later…
16:43
@Jesse_b dog/cow?
Cats appear to be traditional for hackers. Like beards.
@FaheemMitha He likes to bump into things and eats a lot of grass
@Jesse_b A dog that eats grass? That's weird.
@FaheemMitha I think it's actually pretty common but grass normally makes dogs throw up. My dog can eat it all day and be fine
I just say that he is grazing like a cow
@Jesse_b Does your cat like to sit on your keyboard too?
@Jesse_b I've never heard of this.
@FaheemMitha No I don't let him on my desk. I have a stereo amplifier next to my computer that he lays on though. It gets nice and hot when it's on and he likes that
16:48
@Jesse_b I see.
Yeah, dogs eat grass. It is supposed to help their digestive system.
Cats do too, especially if they shed their winter fur, this is why it is important to have careful considerations what plants you have at home, because they neryl nibble at anything green and some plants are toxic for cats
@terdon Well, you learn something new every day.
@Videonauth Life is never simple, is it?
@FaheemMitha never is never will be :)
I just came across a pop song with the amusing title "Konichiwa Bitches".
I don't know why, but that just strikes me a very amusing title. But maybe I'm just easily amused.
That's three "amusing" in three sentences. Get a grip, Faheem.
@Videonauth Cats have winter fur?
17:05
@FaheemMitha yes they have, this is why my flat right now has hairballs laying around regularly
no fun
i can tell you
@Videonauth Ugh.
well it was my decision to have a pet
and having a pet is having a forever pet
love that little furball to bits :)
17:18
So, I purchased the Zoom H5 with some trepidation. I hate shopping. Got a good price. Actually slightly better than the US Amazon price. Usually these things cost much more here.
@Videonauth Cats seem popular. But is the love reciprocated?
It is, as long you keep in mind that cats are not like dogs
Oh, and I'm not 100% sure that the H5 works with Linux as a USB mic. So I'm taking a bit of a risk there. But it's hard to live life with no risk.
@Videonauth How so?
I'm not even clear what drivers are necessary in Linux for USB mics, if any.
dogs/wolfes live in flocks (not sure thats the right word)
cats are more having each their own territory
Seeing as I've never had a USB mic. Or any sound related USB thing, really.
and are more independent
17:20
Yes, I know cats are independent. That's one of the things I like about them.
Does anyone here do much with sound?
Music/film recording?
yaou cant call your cat and expect it really to show up, if you call your dog he in all cases will come to you directly
Even just podcasts?
@Videonauth Wouldn't that depend on the dog?
thats a very deep instinct, dogs see you as their alpha, and if the alpha calls they follow
My cat comes to me sometimes
mine too but not when i call her, she only comes when she wants cuddles :)
or food
17:25
So, what are your cats' names?
Akina :)
I'll also parenthetically note that apparently cats are more interesting than sound recorders.
@Videonauth Sounds Japanese.
it is, translation is spring-flower
It might be that cat picture time of day.
If you guys have any handy.
@Videonauth Oh, nice.
After all, I have on good authority that's what the internet is really meant for.
@FaheemMitha Rupert
17:28
@Jesse_b Less exotic. Why Rupert?
@FaheemMitha He wears sport coats and smokes cigars
@Jesse_b I don't believe you.
@Jesse_b Cute.
Is that what they call a tabby?
I'm not sure
17:35
@Videonauth That's a bit scary looking.
ah no just a weird angle i took this shot
I used to have a cat that looked like that, his name was just "cat"
ehy having a mouse if you can have a computer cat :D
Does anyone here use the GIMP regularly?
I mean, beyond trivial stuff.
@Videonauth He looks very comfortable. And fluffy.
@FaheemMitha I have only used it for trivial stuff
17:42
@Jesse_b Ok.
@FaheemMitha Like making this image
@Jesse_b What did you use the GIMP for with this image?
I added that head
It's a snapshot from a scene in the movie wedding crashers
My friend took some professional photos that were really odd so I edited his head into the image
17:50
@Jesse_b I see.
18:21
@FaheemMitha What do you need gimp for?
@Jesse_b I use it occasionally.
Minor photo editing and things like that.
Have you ever used pixlr.com?
I find it pretty similar to use as gimp and it's all web based so no application needed
18:37
@Jesse_b No.
@Jesse_b Why not just use GIMP?
because they are functionally the same and one doesn't require installation
@StephenKitt I'm not happy about it by any means but I don't even attempt to have privacy on the internet, I believe it's a fallacy
I take comfort in knowing that I am nowhere near important enough for anyone to really care about my data
@Jesse_b exactly, which is why I like using locally-installed applications ;-)
@Jesse_b Functionally the same? How is that possible?
18:52
@FaheemMitha I think pixlr IS gimp but web hosted
@Jesse_b Oh. Weird.
If you upload something, do they get the right to keep a copy?
I would imagine so
So yes, to @StephenKitt's point it's not as good for sure. When I do photo editing though it's normally just stupid things for comedic value so I don't mind if it's on the internet in other people's hands
@Jesse_b what gives you that impression?
@StephenKitt It's been a while since I've used either but the last time I did the interfaces of both were almost identical
@Jesse_b OK
I don’t have Flash so I can’t take a look at Pixlr
I guess there’s nothing to stop them from doing that, given that the Gimp is GPL/LGPL/MIT
but I’d be surprised if they’d ported the Gimp to Flash somehow ;-)
19:02
@StephenKitt Yeah they weren't exactly identical so it may just be that they copied the functionality. I just associate the two because if you can use one you can easily familiarize yourself with the other
19:41
@Jesse_b It's unlikely that they cloned the functionality of GIMP. It's a very old and complicated program.
Hey, Nokia is now making Android phones? That's new.
This is confusing. According to Wikipedia, those phones aren't actually manufactured by Nokia.
I thought nokia has had an android phone for a while
eh I guess since last year
Everything being so connected has made time seem so strange. Things that happened a few months ago seem ages old to me anymore
20:54
@Jesse_b Yes, since 2017.
I doubt it's indestructible
