Hello guys, i have a question, have anyone already succeeded to run vmware on debian platform ?
@Abra001 vmware is a brand what product of them are you trying to run ?
vmware workstation player & manager, latest version.
neither of them worked.
i tried all apt, synaptic, dpkg .
i installed from both .bundle and .deb package
waht is not working ? the installation or the start of the program ?
the guy window doesn't show, neverthless the guest player gave sign of complete installation.
but when i ran, sudo vmplayer, nothng shows.
also i couldn't install vmtools, is this a current problem in debian ?
is your debian a VM ?
07:01
no.
why would you want vm-tools if it's not a VM ?
try to start vmware not as root, I never had to run such tools as root
some versions didn't even get their setup process started, alerting me about some dependencies that can not be satisfied. libv* some version.
did you install the necessary packages ? linuxtechi.com/install-vmware-workstation-14-debian-9
@Kiwy Well i tried this obviously, but vmware is recommended to be run in admin privileges because of IO peripherals.
@Kiwy emm no, i didn't try this out.
I think you should describe what you've done and open a question of your own.
07:09
Yes i'll try to do that, thanks for you help.
you should install the header from your kernel version not the one in this article specifically
yes obviously i don't have AMD64 core but i386.
@Abra001 is it a deliberate choice or a mistake to not install a 64b linux ?
@Kiwy random ? or a random mistake.
would want to know why it is a mistake because i don't know the difference.
i386 linux distro still exist for legacy reasons it supports old CPU architecture. To get full advantage of recent processors a X86_64 bit version of linux is necessary
and if your CPU is less than 10 years old it's almost sure you have a 64bits CPU
07:17
oh ok, of course X86_64 arm architectures have plenty of advantages.
X86_64 != arm !
it's just a matter of habit, i used to be on windows, and i used to install 32b versions .
arm are RISK CPU, X86 and X86_64 are CISC CPU they are nothing alike.
5 years ago it was debatable, nowaday you should always peak the 64bit to install a recent Linux
Except if you have very specific requierement
By using old architecture like i386 we are forcing devs to maintains a lot of legacy code in the kernel and it would be for the best if one day the support i386 could be drop, which might not happen if a lot of people are still using them.
Well, i used to face a lot of problems in 64x windows, but i guess for linux it's different.
@Abra001 "used to" but problem with 64bit version of windows were limited to the 2 first release of windows 64b. I'm using Windows 7 64b since 2010 and now windows 10 64b and never had issue with them related to the 64b parts
07:29
@Kiwy you didn't come faced to any problems in relation to .net frameworks ?
wired, this happened for me alot.
@Abra001 Never developed anything on windows so I'm only a user of the framwork and nope never had issue except having to install both 32b and 64b version
@Kiwy this is a very good opportunity to install debian 64, i messed up recently with the grub and now i will disregard setting up a new 32 version taking your advice into count.
also i need to reset up the system anyways because of alot of unnecessary packages i installed.
@Abra001 Have you tried VirtualBox? I think it's similar.
yes i have it installed without problems.
but i'm more familiar with VMware, a long story of usage that began from days of winXP.
+1 for @FaheemMitha VirtualBox is very powerfull and very easy to use
07:52
Architecture: i686 CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit
I want to know what is CPU op-mode?
08:04
means that your CPU is able to operate either 32bits or 64btis operation
@Abra001 Ok. Well, VMware is proprietary. One is generally better off not using proprietary software.
Though I believe VirtualBox is now owned by Oracle, which is not much better.
Though I think the current version is free software.
@FaheemMitha the best part of Vbox was never opensource even when Sun was in command
Oddly, I don't have virtualbox currently installed, as far as I can see.
Even though I've used it in the past.
@Kiwy Oh. I've not used it enough to know.
the hypervysor is good the gui is OK, but the easy sharing of ressources /screen/folder/USB is proprietary and free for personnal use but licensed for professional use
@Abra001 There are other VM projects around. Some of them are proper free software projects, and not owned by giant corporations.
@Kiwy That sucks.
Is that still the case today?
08:13
If I run 32bit Fedora on one hard disk and 64 bit archlinux on another hard disk.This will be okay?
As far as I remember it has been the case but before the oracle era they really never have control over whom was using it and how. Nowaday Oracle is looking for money everywhere.
Recently at work a collegue of mine told me that Oracle ask them to pay for licence of virtual box because they detected several download for virtualbox from our public IPs
@FaheemMitha giant corporations?
@PrabhjotSingh why it wouldn't ?
@Kiwy archlinux and Fedora both work but the lines at the very start run diagonally to one another.
I thought this would cause trouble soon.
@PrabhjotSingh Oracle, for example.
@Kiwy That's weird. Isn't VB still free?
08:20
@FaheemMitha I wanted to Know why you hold grudge against giant corporations. Once you told me capitalism in operation if recall correctly.
Even some of my good friends are against Ubuntu.
@FaheemMitha They have the most odd licensing model ever seen, It's free for dev/test/personnal use, but if you're using it to host something that is accessed from outside the host computer then it's a no longer free to use...
@PrabhjotSingh Probably because under the nice polish specially Oracle, when you look closely at what they did to all opensource project they inherit from Sun ...
well they screw up so much of them and they were major player in OpenSource world
08:49
Why do Systemd decided to take over DNS wasn't that enough pain in the ass before so they put there nose where they shouldn't
[Flame:off]
09:15
[Flame:on]
Why is host command working properly to resolv DNS query and not the OS ? is DNSMasq is it Systemd-resolved who knows and who cares, how can it be so complicated to offer a simple DNS configuration at OS level.
HAAAAAAAAAAAA
@Kiwy Just take a deep breath, back up your personal files in an off-site location, and install a Unix without systemd.
@Kusalananda I should do that. but that's the distros I knw the most (the one with systemd)
that name systemd in french is actually pretty relevant because in french if you're trying the "Système D" it means that you're about to mess around trying stuff on you own not being sure of the success rate
so it's a very nice name at least for a french speaker
09:37
I can't stand it anymore host anything.com works but ping anything.com won't work...
0
Q: Cannot Ping Site but DNS Resolves

carloabelliI am using DNS-crypt proxy as a local DNS server with cloudflare as the resolver. For some reason I cannot ping www.automaticwebforms.com despite the DNS resolving: ping $ ping www.automaticwebforms.com ping: www.automaticwebforms.com: Name or service not known netcat $ netcat www.automatic...

in this case I can ping anything when not connected to this VPN
Possibly not related at all to your issue.
Just that since 2013 resolv.conf plus dnsmasq plus network-manager never manage to correct mutiple bugs making DNS request through a VPN a pain in A... while it should be very easy
I don't often use VPN, but when I do, I don't do DNS through it.
09:42
Well I really need it to connect to kerberos domain
without that my VPN is pointless
I've never used kerberos. Not even by mistake I think.
Well thank you for the nsswitch link interesting though not the solution
@Kusalananda it indeed somehow solve my issue (thensswitch link)
Thank you a lot
I disable systemd-resolv anyway
10:16
@PrabhjotSingh I don't know what you mean by "hold grudge".
But big corporations tend to increasingly think they can do anything. And change laws if it doesn't suit them. Not very democratic.
Plus Oracle doesn't exactly have a great record with free software.
10:29
@FaheemMitha age
Agreed, capital is not afraid of anything.
BTW if you hate there's organizations you aren't alone. There are others too.
@FaheemMitha @Kiwy is there a product from these opensource, or a free offer from oracle or vmware that allows proxiftying the usb stdin/out protocole into some external source ? a file for example ?
or serial ports, case of printer or something.
in vmware one shoulde enable usb.analyzer, but i'm talking about a MIM here not just capturing dog.
11:20
@Kusalananda what is VPN? What are it's uses?

2 hours later…
13:39
@PrabhjotSingh Virtual private network. They can be more secure through encryption, are generally easier to work with as they can simulate a LAN over WAN, they can also reduce latency in some cases
For personal use many people use them for the illusion of privacy and/or to access content that is not available in your country
@Jesse_b reduce latency?
@StephenKitt Yes, gaming VPNs will give you an endpoint closer to the game server and they actually reduce latency
@Jesse_b on a rather poor ISP then
I mean I can see how a VPN could in theory reduce latency
I can’t see it happening for real for a price most human beings would be willing to pay
unless the endpoint is managed by a really bad ISP
@StephenKitt I'm not sure, they are actually quite popular. I have used one that definitely made a difference too. I live in Colorado and the game server I was playing on is on the east coast (virginia I think). The vpn reduces my latency from around 250ms to 120~ms
@Jesse_b see that’s your problem right there: your ISP shouldn’t give you 250ms latency to the EC
13:49
I think it's likely an issue with the game's ISP
yeah that works too
but e.g. I get worst-case 190ms to California, and I’m in Europe
I got 72ms to bristol va using speedtest
@StephenKitt and in the best case you get around 100 to 120 ms because that's the time the signal needs to get through the under water cable connection ~40ms to 60ms for one way.
@Videonauth yup, and there’s nothing a VPN can do about that
Right that are simply physical limitations
13:57

Q: Can VPNs reduce latency?

Vinko VrsalovicI've found a common subject in forums asking about using VPNs to reduce latencies between the gamers and the game servers. I've even found some blog posts confirming this. From my understanding, using a VPN shouldn't reduce latency at all, unless routers somehow treat encrypted packets different...

All I can say is the one I used worked and there are several companies selling vpns targeted to specific game servers so people must think they are worth spending money on them
@Jesse_b I’m not doubting you
it just underlines the quality of ISPs or lack of it :-/
Yeah well the internet in general could certainly be several times more efficient but there are so many issues preventing that
There are so many different companies in the mix, many of which are struggling to keep up with demands/technology and are likely either bickering with each other or not working as efficiently as they could with each other
I speak to too many people that think ISPs are the mecca of technology, but they are just a mismanaged disaster like any other company. They have talented people and completely incompetent people like anywhere else
14:17
@Jesse_b some ISPs more than others ;-). But yes the principles hold true, which is why the mess with the FCC of late is worrying...
It doesn't bother me that much, I believe net neutrality was pretty widely misunderstood
I don't like any legislation that is over 20 pages though, they always give the government more power than they need
@Jesse_b how could I install VPN on Fedora 27.
If there any any native Hindi speakers here, I have a vocabulary question.
What is a/the Hindi word for "copy", as in the following sense? "I made a copy of the letter".
14:33
बनायी?
I made a copy => मैंने एक प्रति बनायी according to google translate. No idea if that makes sense, of course.
@FaheemMitha Punjabi nakal
@terdon That's "made".
Mein khat/Chitti di nakal banayi.
@PrabhjotSingh That's imitation, isn't it? Or forgery? Or fake.
Similar to Hindi "nakli".
No no nakal can be fake.
But you go to some office, they will give you nakal
14:39
@FaheemMitha Oh well.
बाथरूम कहां है? संख्या दो जल्दी!
@PrabhjotSingh So nakal is not the same as nakli? And this is Punjabi.
@FaheemMitha it could be. But officially nakal is just another copy of sth.
Anyone who has used Google Translate for 5 minutes will have realised that it's about as reliable as a racoon with early onset dementia. Only to be used when no alternative exists.
But that's in Punjabi.
14:41
@PrabhjotSingh Ok. Thank you.
@FaheemMitha It can be used for entertainment purposes. Translate a sentence from one language to another, to another, to another, and then back into the original and see how much it has changed
@Jesse_b Like High-tech Chinese Whispers.
@FaheemMitha my friend one told me steel plant on Google translate is lohe da pauda
I translated "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" from english to spanish to bengali to chinese then back to english:
"Fast joke jumps into lazy dog"
@Jesse_b Probably more accurate than Chinese Whispers then.
I remember participating in a game as a child, and had no idea what the person next to me said into my ear. Under normal circumstances I would have demanded a repeat, but I'm not sure the rules of the game covered that.
14:46
@FaheemMitha Ah yes, we call that the "telephone game" in the US
Chinese whispers is the British term for the game known as telephone in the United States and other Anglophone countries. It is an internationally popular children's game. Players form a line, and the first player comes up with a message and whispers it to the ear of the second person in the line. The second player repeats the message to the third player, and so on. When the last player is reached, they announce the message they heard to the entire group. The first person then compares the original message with the final version. Although the objective is to pass around the message without ...
Apparently a British term.
we played that once in elementary school and the phrase ended up something like "Mike wears purple underwear and lives in a gingerbread house". I forget what it started as but it was nothing close to that
Apparently just another example of British racism/xenophobia.
@Jesse_b Interesting.
@FaheemMitha Britain doing something unethical towards non-british people? I don't believe it!
@Jesse_b In this case, just terminology.
Looks like प्रतिलिपि might be good enough.
Also some example usage here: glosbe.com/hi/en/…
15:12
Trying to decide whether to get the Zoom H5. I suck at shopping - I'm very indecisive.
15:33
@FaheemMitha ... and when you know both languages :-)
15:50
@Kusalananda If you know both languages, why would you use Google Translate?
linux mint tara is about to be released
16:16
@FaheemMitha if you read some pages from Rag Darbari, you wouldn't doubt about nakal.
प्रतिलिपि will do.
@PrabhjotSingh Who or what is that?
Rag Darbari is a great Indian novel. You would love it.
@FaheemMitha I anticipate your forgiveness for "hold grudge" thing.
@PrabhjotSingh In what language?
@PrabhjotSingh Huh?
Sounds interesting. Uttar Pradesh, huh?
We get tons of people from UP here. They come here for work, of course.
It sounds like it's quite bad up north if they are coming to this hellhole of a city.
Actually, one of the people who works for us is from UP.
In fact, he's stuck there right now. Trying to get back here.
Is the Hindi in that novel difficult?
16:30
@FaheemMitha this novel is about sarkari system.
Yes, Hindi novel.
@PrabhjotSingh Yes, I got that. And corruption and so forth. The usual Indian topics.
Problem with Hindi reading.
Yes
All very much alive in the present. Probably worse than in the 1960s, actually.
@PrabhjotSingh Who does? You mean you?
I mean you can read Hindi?
I just wanted to know.
Rag Darbari would make you cry i
@PrabhjotSingh Who, me? Not really. Only with significant difficulty. But I suppose I could get better.
With practice, I mean.
16:33
Then you must read this.
Regardless, I suppose there are English translations. Though they are probably not the same.
Is this a favorite novel of yours, then?
@FaheemMitha are you Marathi?
@PrabhjotSingh No.
No, my favorite is war and peace.
Ah, ok. In the original Russian? :-)
16:35
No no English
I can't read Russian.
@PrabhjotSingh I was kidding.
Russian isn't commonly taught in India. Though of course one could learn it oneself.
Though for awhile Russia was a relatively popular destination for Indian students. I vaguely remember someone I knew slightly going there to study.
Russian and French literature very rich.
From where did you study?
@PrabhjotSingh Different places.
@FaheemMitha I anticipate your forgiveness for "hold grudge" thing.
Though I think of myself as an autodidact. I think in practice most people are.
16:41
Russia is different geographically but in fact they imitate French.
So am i clear of grudge thing.
@PrabhjotSingh Still not following you. What grudge are you talking about?
BTW, the Hindi SE proposal died. Are you aware of that?
A bit surprising, considering how many Hindi speakers there are in the world.
You are not getting me.
I questioned you for being anti-capitalist. Somewhere I wrote hold grudge of this.
I am saying I didn't mean to offend you.
@PrabhjotSingh No, you didn't offend me.
I'm not so easily offended.
Plus, you didn't say anything offensive.
And I don't know whether I'm anti-capitalist or not. I'm certainly not pro-capitalist.
You see, zehn
But capitalism has lots of problems, which anyone with a functioning brain should be aware of.
16:49
You see, there is so much intolerance in the air.
Zehn soche to shorten hota hai.
I think a system like syndicalism is clearly better, but it's not clear how it would scale, because nobody has tried it.
Zehn soche to shor hota hai
Socialist systems haven't had much luck so far. Take what happened at the time of the Russian revolution. They tried a little bit of socialism, for like 5 minutes. And it was promptly beaten to death by the Bolsheviks.
@PrabhjotSingh Sorry, again not following.
no one is pro capitalist. only the aristocratic layer of people.

Q: Merge two values

xnorYou have two values each of which is either 0 representing "unknown", or one of 1,2,3. Merge them into a single value as follows: If both values are nonzero and equal, output that value: (3,3) -> 3 If both values are nonzero but unequal, output 0 for unknown: (1,2) -> 0 If one value is zero and...

Best I can do in shell is:
if (($1+$2!=0)) && (($1==$2)); then
	echo $1
elif (($1==0)) || (($2==0)); then
	echo $(($1+$2))
else
	echo 0
fi
16:52
Is qadr khoshi hai Charon tarf, zehan soche to shor hota hai.
@PrabhjotSingh I've got no idea what you are saying, sorry.
@FaheemMitha socialists are drug peddlers in Latin America.
If that's transliterated Hindi, my grasp of Hindi is probably not strong enough to follow.
@PrabhjotSingh Huh?
@Abra001 Some people say they are.
I've met people who defended it. I have a friend who went to work in a bank. Before he went to work in the bank he was anti-people with money. Afterwards, he was pro.
I didn't find the transition surprising, but I did find it a bit sad.
There is so much intolerance on our land, even if I think something in my mind people would get angry.
@PrabhjotSingh What, in India? Maybe. Depends on what you mean.
16:56
Every where
they don't know what they are saying, or they are social-climbers, or they don't know what they are saying, or they are economically suicidal.
@FaheemMitha if capitalism was bad, neoliberalism is even worse.
@PrabhjotSingh Isn't that just a form of capitalism?
@Abra001 I agree. One of the above. But People are Dumb.
One problem with capitalism is that it is very hard to control. But that's someone everyone knows.
It's like riding on the back of a tiger. Sure, you might go places, but you might also end up eaten.
@FaheemMitha yes, this is a form. Imperalism too was a form of capitalism.
@PrabhjotSingh Agreed.
16:59
You see, capitalism is dynamic.
You can't quote Karl Marx in the days.
@Abra001 I think my friend decided he liked having money. Once he decided that, capitalism didn't seem so bad.
Everything has changed
@FaheemMitha it depends the factor of risk he enjoys.
It's all about aspiration, really. Like those people in the US who don't have any money, but are still against universal health care.
@Abra001 Factor of risk?
yes, the ability od taking risky engagements, firm decision making.
17:01
Not sure I follow.
It's funny - he complained to me how horrible the people in the banks he worked in were. I wondered why he was surprised.
@FaheemMitha why in US people against UHC
These are people who are mainly interested in making as much money as possible. Why would he expect them to be nice?
@PrabhjotSingh That's a complicated question.
Because they identify with rich people?
I don't think it has a simple answer.
if one is unstable and opinion fluctuant, it's not recommended for him to found a capital and bet on it.
also, you need to be very well informed about your surrounding.
17:05
@FaheemMitha at least health, education and labor rights should be free
Of capitali
@PrabhjotSingh That would be nice, certainly.
i thought american are very different from us.
They are just like us.
You see, capitalism is dynamic.
You can't quote Karl Marx in these days.
@FaheemMitha are you from US.
@PrabhjotSingh No, I'm Indian.
i mean you studied or worked there.
@PrabhjotSingh Yes, I did.
17:15
@FaheemMitha dosen't matter about domicile
This is apparent from your answers.
From now for me america has changed.
@FaheemMitha hindi SE?
@PrabhjotSingh Yes, there was a proposal for a Hindi SE. It died.
It's been deleted, I think.
stack exchange?
@FaheemMitha well line about intolerance was in urdu.
I thought you are a hindi speakin you would understand
@PrabhjotSingh My knowledge of Hindi is very limited.
@PrabhjotSingh Yes, Stack Exchange.
So what?
you know everything about linux. this is nice.
@FaheemMitha My knowledge of English is limited.
I studied in Govt. schools.
@Jesse_b when i try to set up VPN Gateway and NT Domain are empty.
17:32
@PrabhjotSingh It's always possible to improve.
Indian schools are terrible. Places where a desire to learn goes to die.
Indian schools, teachers, parents, society everything is terrible
@FaheemMitha BTW you said about British racism. And someone objected to this.
That was Windrush scandal. in recent news.
@PrabhjotSingh Who objected to it?
@PrabhjotSingh That sounds familiar - I think I read about it yesterday or something.
But I can't remember what it's about.
I don know. you siad xenophobia and Brisish racism.
Ah yes, I remember. Immigration policy.
today
someone objected to it and said i don believe
17:47
@PrabhjotSingh yes, I was referring to the name "Chinese whispers". I wasn't being very serious.
But I find it hard not to take the opportunity to give a swift kick to the British. It's like a game.
even then you were right.
Possibly.
Windrush scandal is in news these days
Yes, I see that.
doctor zhivago and farewell gulsary depicts true picture of Bolshevicks.
@FaheemMitha there is one more gulag archipelago. But this i ve not read so far.
18:47
@FaheemMitha I think a system like syndicalism is clearly better, but it's not clear how it would scale, because nobody has tried it.
The Mondragon Corporation is very close to answer.
19:03
@Jesse_b While adding vpn connection, gateway and nt domain are empty. Don't know what to fill in.
@PrabhjotSingh I think you need to research the concept of VPNs some more to understand them
@PrabhjotSingh Well, scaling is one problem. I'm sure there are lots of others.
Mondragon is still quite small.
scaling is one. agreed
quite frankly I know about Mondragon only.
@FaheemMitha syndicates by people we don know.
@PrabhjotSingh ?
but syndicates by corporate houses or cartels are well known to us.
@FaheemMitha how can I install cloud.
5
19:19
@PrabhjotSingh I don't know what that is.
@FaheemMitha cloud?
owncloud cozy or anything
i know you know about dis
Install cloud lol
@Jesse_b i followed srtongvpn.
@PrabhjotSingh No, I don't, actually. What is "cloud"?
but what about gateway and nt domain
@Jesse_b what is lol???
19:24
a palindrome
@Jesse_b ROFL
Hi @StephenKitt.
@FaheemMitha hello Faheem!
what does lol mean
@PrabhjotSingh Laugh Out Loud.
19:25
ok
people already moved to VPS and VDS.
@FaheemMitha how to install owncloud sever
@Jesse_b no problem with lol.
@PrabhjotSingh bfy.tw/IJEO
i don't think there exist a free vps anywhere in internet.
@Jesse_b THX
19:33
i remember in the earlier days where the word "how to" wasn't so much often used in search queries because Q&A forums were next to absent in internet.
19:56
@PrabhjotSingh use megasync better than cloud
@Abra001 What is this for, again?
file hosting service.
@Abra001 until today i wasnt aware of VPN. Jesse_b told me about VPN. Thanks to him.
nothing to say
@FaheemMitha anonymity does exist. or this is just a utopian dream. about VPN
20:07
with a vps or ssh, dreams turn real.
ssh is enabled in fedora by default if i m not wrong.
yea but that's a client, what about the server ?
the lion's part happens server-side, where it generates public keys and manages handshakes.
@Abra001 i m just 20 days old kid on this chat room. plz elaborate
20:11
with ssh udp socket tunelling, it's near impossible to taceback the connection.
ssh udp tuuneling is possible on fedora 27
good, then i won't ever stand around an isp provider called fedora.
Both of you are talking in half sentences. It's like watching a conversation written on post-it notes on an office notice board.
where were you?
@Kusalananda [root@dhcppc1 mc]# echo {{a,b}.{c,d}}
{a.c} {a.d} {b.c} {b.d}
[root@dhcppc1 mc]# echo {{a,b}. {c,d}}
{a. {b. c} d}

"A Unix shell is both a command interpreter and a programming language. As a command interpreter, the shell provides the user interface to the rich set of GNU utilities."
apparently GNU utilities are the only utilities
there's shell and bash, shell is cli, bash is a pl.
bash is a shell
and a language
bourn again sh
well , idk maaybe i was wrong, people refer to shell often as a cli, like oh my zsh
So what cli do you use when you are using the bash shell?
/bin/bash
i was just talking idiomatically.
21:16
"Enclosing characters in single quotes (‘'’) preserves the literal value of each character within the quotes. A single quote may not occur between single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash."
$ echo $'o\'rly?'
o'rly?
> A single quote may not occur between single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash
??
$ echo "'I beg to differ ' GNU'"
'I beg to differ ' GNU'
the apostrophe is clearely escaped in the first example.
Yeah it's ANSI-C quoting though so I suppose it doesn't apply to what they meant
but I like to be difficult
