01:00 - 20:0020:00 - 22:00

8:01 PM
fun fact: SE's design system is open source

also reminds me
it's been months since i touched the game but for some reason the dash button in strive feels way less responsive than 66/44 dash

so there's technically nothing stopping me from making an SE clone using the same UI system

maybe it's just because i bound it to shift but i don't think my shift key has been weird like that in anything else
or my pinky finger itself

@Ginger You've been slow flying for five years? holy shit I feel so bad for you

@RydwolfPrograms I've been sprinting and then activating fly mode
it sucks

8:03 PM
lol that works?

yes

yeah lol
i did that before i found out there was a sprint button too

Also MC has the tap-instead-of-hold thing now as an option

I honestly, truly did not know that you could use Ctrl to sprint while flying
my life has been forever changed

I never use the double W to sprint

8:03 PM
i'm not entirely sure there was a sprint button when i first played

It feels inconsistent and I often will sprint for very short periods of time or need to stop sprinting without stopping

@RydwolfPrograms isn't tap toggle sprint always on? i know there is a toggle crouch setting but i don't think i've ever heard of hold-to-sprint in mc

You have to hold ctrl to sprint
By default, at least
Oh waitr no you don't
I'm dumb
I hold it anyway tho

8:05 PM
Since I use my palm to hit control

@Ginger what the hell???

agreed

what kind of keyboard do you have
and/or what size are your hands

🎵it's the end of the website as we know it🎵
@RydwolfPrograms ಠ_ಠ

i can very easily slip my pinky to ctrl with my other fingers on asd-space but i have to really curl up to use my palm

8:07 PM
@UnrelatedString Standard size keyboard and hands

my man got A4 sized hands

actually i guess it's not too awkward if the heel of my hand is resting like right below ctrl

Yeah your hands don't conform to the ISO standard?

then again, Mumbo Jumbo hits shift with his thumb

8:07 PM
You don't?

(I don't have a link, but he's mentioned it in a few videos)

who what and how

Using my pinky feels so risky
Thumb all the way

@RydwolfPrograms have you lost your mind?

i think he's joking
(i hope he's joking)

8:08 PM
I'm not sure if we can remain friends :b

@UnrelatedString No?
I'm /srs, I don't get how you'd feel safe crouching over a ledge with your weakest finger on shift

why does everyone have some weird thing with how they use a keyboard/mouse

i think maybe your keyboard is slightly larger than mine?
because your hands don't look smaller
@RydwolfPrograms but also what the fuck

I totally have large manly hands mhm

could you get a picture of you pressing shift with your thumb because uh

8:10 PM
The keyboard's gotta be it

CMQ: what's your Weird Input Thing? I compulsively press the capslock key several times after I type a sentence

you what

I don't know why I do it, but I always have and now it's a habit

i honestly can't think of any particular weird input thing i do

8:11 PM

except for switching keyboard layouts

@RydwolfPrograms AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

i have english - russian - japanese and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

this is an affront to all that is holy

Using thumb feels way more ergonomic than my smallest finger given where I rest my hand so that ctrl can be hit with my palm

8:12 PM
I'm revoking your thumb license
I am going to come to your house and personally remove both of your thumbs

but yeah when i want to switch from english to russian i usually end up hitting alt-shift twice by accident so then i do it twice again :P

actually, no; I'll get lyxal to do it

@Ginger My thumbs are opposable and they are opposing this hard right now

@RydwolfPrograms oppose these bolt cutters, you unholy spawn of Satan
(that's a joke)

@UnrelatedString Wait what OS is switching layouts alt+shift?

8:13 PM
wimdows

^

It's ctrl+space for me

ctrl space doesn't do anything for me
but i think that's what it was on my old mac

@RydwolfPrograms I have Ctrl-Space bound to something wack on my RPi

How is alt+shift not ambiguous?

8:13 PM
can't recall what

They're both modifier keys

good question :P
also switching layouts within a language is ctrl shift lmao

Y'know what would be really wacky

but I can tell you that I bound Super-` for toggling the maximization state of a window

If each layout had a different keybind for it
So sometimes it's ctrl+space and sometimes it's ctrl+shift

8:14 PM
i do that by accident so much and one of my three english layouts is the stupid quote-is-a-dead-key us intl

@UnrelatedString Ew

but i still keep it around to fill in the gaps in the ipa layout

I have a custom layout where the deadkey is AltGr+quote

@UnrelatedString oh, I have that because of reasons

along with other spicy additions

8:15 PM
nice

Like the unused AltGr+G being a deadkey for the greek layout

imagine having a custom keyboard layout

So I can do AltGr+G A to get an alpha
It's just a slightly modified version of the ChromeOS US EXTD layout

my keyboard has SysRq, and I like using it wherever possible

8:17 PM
oh, which reminds me: @mousetail I recently managed to accidentally hit the "kill all except init" SysRq key instead of the reboot one, so now I can tell you that what happens is... nothing interesting
systemd basically acts as if it's a full reboot

CMQ: Would it be unwise to superglue the rubber tip thing to my airpod pro
It keeps falling off
And I don't think my ears are gonna grow any more

glue the whole airpod to your ear

Trust me I consider it daily

if you actually do it please tell me how it goes

8:20 PM
I tried to go running last night and had to resort to walking because I couldn't go 20 feet without one or both falling out

also me when apple (this post made by android gang)

IMO the very first transhumanist surgery that we should invest in is standardized docking ports in our ears

simply get real headphones and go running with those on

@RydwolfPrograms UEB: Universal Earial Bus

Forget like, curing genetic diseases and aging and stuff, I just wanna be able to listen to stuff while running/pushing carts in the parking lot/typing on my laptop at school
@UnrelatedString I have considered just wearing my ATH-M50x's but a) I would look insane and b) I don't want to get them all gross and sweaty

8:23 PM
I already look insane, so it's not an issue for me

I do sometimes wear them around the house tho, I look antisocial as shit but the sound quality and convenience is worth it

I never get people who call wireless stuff "more convenient"
Like if you have the option to use wired anything, it makes life so much easier
No charging, no batteries dying, no bad connections, no pairing, none of that

I disagree

8:25 PM
the only places wires are actually harder to manage are the places nobody's doing wireless anyways :P

when Bluetooth and Co. work, they work quite well in my experience

Wireless server rack any takers

and when they don't I simply turn them off and on again

I hate charging stuff and cables just work which is super nice

and those are also the places actual wire management solutions exist

8:25 PM
No 10 minutes of trying to pair the divices

You gotta take the datacenter offline every few days to charge all the servers

something something apple wireless mouse that can't be used while charging

(side note: I'm only referring to things like headphones; wireless monitors and stuff are beyond stupid)

Oh yeah the dead cockroach mouse?

exactly :P

8:26 PM
(wireless mice? eeeeeeeh probably not a good idea)

@Ginger playing FPS games on a trackpad

@Ginger This is actually the first I've heard of wireless monitors and oh boy does that sound dumb

Not as dumb as Stadia or whatever but still dumb

clearly what we need is a mouse with a built-in gasoline generator
advertise it as "free haptic feedback! (non-optional)"

8:27 PM
so true

I'd be ok with wireless monitors since you can just set them up once then they work, unlike earphones which I need to constantly switch between my phone and computer

No clue who was like "y'know that one thing where input latency matters more than anywhere else? that's a SaaS opportunity if I've ever seen it"

@RydwolfPrograms it's kinda dumb, but also kinda cool, because the people who make them have done some ridiculous shit to keep the latency down

Same with wireless gaming mice
Like how big is that market
People who are willing to buy a mouse specifically for gaming but unwilling to deal with a single wire

it's gotta be like 10 people who want something labeled as gaming and don't want to game with it

8:28 PM
@Ginger They use lossy compression right?
So you get the snow glitching effect

relatedly, did you know that Joy-Cons transmit data at 3125000 baud? (source)

I was in one of those shared office space places once for a meeting with someone, and some lady had a like, 27" curved gaming monitor for like spreadsheets
Betting her son just went off to college or something lol
@Ginger ...3 mbps? That doesn't sound very italics-worthy in 2023

Spreadsheets are a very good use of ultra wide monitors

@RydwolfPrograms they're game controllers

even more so than gaming
Those things require a ton of space

8:31 PM
can one convert from bytes to metric units

@noodleman yes

...metric units? Is there a metric byte?

(depending on the storage medium)

2^10?

@RydwolfPrograms i feel like super wide monitors could be somewhat useful for very very large amounts of poorly managed spreadsheets :P

8:31 PM
how else am i going to measure the length of my code?

Oh like length units?

yes

@RydwolfPrograms yeah you didn't know about the ISO Standard Byte? they keep it in a secure hard drive in an airless chamber to prevent damage

You can make your font as small as you like

true

8:32 PM
google microfiche

@mousetail holy hell

i'll start golfing my solutions by using 1pt font

new response just dropped

Also if you use 0-width space unary all solutions are 0 width
And will probably crash most editors

i thought this was going to be some rust meme
disappointed it's just a typo :P

8:33 PM
presenting my new zero-width font, which displays zero characters at zero width so you can view zero times as much text in zero percent of the time!

Always assume everything I say is a typo

0.00000192497 mm/byte
I have math but I do not have time to explain it
o/

There is a schodinger limit to how much information you can store in some volume I think
you could use that
You can store about 10^43 bits per kilogram meter
I don't really understand that unit
In physics, the Bekenstein bound (named after Jacob Bekenstein) is an upper limit on the thermodynamic entropy S, or Shannon entropy H, that can be contained within a given finite region of space which has a finite amount of energy—or conversely, the maximal amount of information required to perfectly describe a given physical system down to the quantum level. It implies that the information of a physical system, or the information necessary to perfectly describe that system, must be finite if the region of space and the energy are finite. In computer science this implies that non-finite models...

tomorrow's the start of Pride Month

9:22 PM
so my FFT esolang idea is apparently totally impractical
i cannot predict when constructing the audio file how many bins there will be

sadly that also means 1. my original idea is also unusable and 2. all the code i wrote is useless now
if if yall have an idea on how to make an FFT audio based esolang, hit me up
i could try lerp + finding local maxima but i dont feel like messing with that. id rather go rewrite rol's file meta serializer
@PlaceReporter99 nobody except you uses it tho :P
