11:00 PM
That's probably a legal nightmare.

CMC: Give a common irk or issue involving naming things in programming that would be easier in a language besides English. e.g. i stands for index but also the imaginary constant, probably in other languages that's less confusing

@SIGSEGV btw:

Chat messages are deleted or trashed and users are kicked or suspended to keep the room on topic. Lengthy arguments after said actions achieve the opposite goal. If you disagree with chat moderation, take it to meta.
aka: "you were chatbanned for a reason. Don't bring it up again."
I really don't want this to turn into ban discussion again, taht never goes well

Hey guys. Brain-flak's birthday is in a month so I was hoping to Brainstorm some challenge ideas in The third stack this week. Feel free to join regardless of your Brian-Flak skill level.

Lang idea: A programming language than can use bits, and so can have answers in less than a byte. Call it "shave and a haircut" for the memes

o my
just copy jelly

11:10 PM
@Riker Well if it was before yesterday it should be fixed now
@DestructibleLemon Isn't possible

I have been thinking - the fewer commands you have, the less bits those commands fit in, so the more commands you can have per byte. if you have 8 commands, you can fit one into 3 bits. You have the potential for 256 unique commands with 1 byte per command.

@ASCII-only it was not

You just need to build a computer

@DestructibleLemon How do you actually store fractions of a byte

11:11 PM
that can handle 1 bit words
it will be hard but it will be worth it for the memes

@Riker I don't like this rule. It sounds like a police officer saying "I'm arresting you but you aren't allowed to ask why until you're in front of judge and jury."
Granted, it's easy to immediately write a meta post about being banned, but a simple "Why was I banned? I'll try not to do it again." in chat is not unreasonable. Especially for new users who don't know the ins and outs of chat and meta.

@HelkaHomba new room called judge and jury

@HelkaHomba well, his now-deleted message was a bit more than that
it was something along the lines of "Hey, I was banned, and it just wore off"

TIL GNURoot. Brb setting up build server on phone.

11:14 PM
lol

@DestructibleLemon I believe this has been discussed before and there may be a meta post disallowing it. I know for sure 3-bit brainfuck has been shot down multiple times

@HelkaHomba yes
but if you make a computer
that can store 1 bit things
it will be allowed
make it happen pls
if you make a thing that actually stores 2 bits rather than 1 byte but only uses two bits it will count

The solution to 3bit brainfuck is to just use compressed-fuck.
Which essentially just rounds it up to the nearest byte.

@HelkaHomba I mean, you could take the code in bytes, and parse every 3 bits. You would end up with completely unreadable code and probably some stray, unused bits, but equivalently 3 bit bf
@ATaco Yeah

@MistahFiggins but you can't actually pass in exactly 3 bits

11:18 PM
Yeah...

@DestructibleLemon Right. Through compression using bits has no real benefit except when it comes to fractions of bytes

but if anyone here is able to make computer please make computer with 1 bit command language

@DestructibleLemon But we conceptually know computers could hold bits. I think it's just that we prefer bytes as our smallest measure. (But again, not sure if there's an official meta post that says so.)

@HelkaHomba not really. its just about the fact that files are written with bytes and stuff

@HelkaHomba Although I agree that in this case the message was nearer to drama than asking why, in general I don't see a problem with someone asking a quick question in chat if they phrase it like you did (as a genuine question). I think disagreements should go to meta but I wouldn't expect anyone to be reprimanded for asking a question in chat (if they are interested in improving)

11:21 PM
What are thoughts on a room specifically designed to ask why people were banned/kicked?

No.
That would be a horrible room to enter, full of hatred and anger.

then you just ban them again :P

@trichoplax Right. A bunch of drama/arguments I can understand is off topic, but a quick question of how stuff works should be ok.

also there wouldn't be that much hate there, I mean if the room isn't there its just directed in other rooms
and then it just makes off topic stuff that noone likes or something

@HelkaHomba Yes, and I can see how it looks harsh without the context now that the message has been deleted, but I'm pretty sure there isn't anyone who would object to a genuine question. If you do see that, please raise it...
I think the main thing to avoid is asking about other people's kicks/suspensions, which makes it harder for them to move on from it. Asking about your own is only a problem if it's antagonistic

11:29 PM
Watch me play FTL live here: gaming.youtube.com/user/dmitry4059/live

I reckon part of the problem is the feedback loop of increased kicks causing more people angry about kicks causing more contentious chat causing more kicks etc. Everyone should loosen up 🌈‿🌈

@/all PPCG-Design is fixed (yay)

@HelkaHomba You could say that there's a lot of... kickback?

Also :O someone actually bothered to learn Charcoal

@ASCII-only :D is it me

11:32 PM
Does someone here have an 8-thread CPU and sysbench?

@mınxomaτ Have access to one

@Downgoat idk have you been reading the wiki (it's adnan btw)

@Mendeleev puns are another "issue" :P

@Riker My lord, that looks completely awful

@mınxomaτ Does 8 threads w/ hyperthreading count

11:32 PM
@HelkaHomba I hope I don't get punished for this

@Downgoat Yes
Run sysbench --test=cpu --cpu-max-prime=20000 --num-threads=8 run and pastebin/gist the output.

@mınxomaτ will this lock up computer

Not really.

Does it count if I run it from windows bash?

11:34 PM
lol

Oh, wait. WSL. Yes, that does count.

you really want it pastebinned? I can probably dump it here

Better not clog up chat.

It's fine with me

from an ubuntu 16.04 system
also lscpu is there so you have the CPU info on what's on this system
it's 4-core + hyperthreading so the CPU count is off, but eh

11:37 PM
do you still need mine?

Nope.
So my 8-thread phone CPU is about 8x slower.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

L3viathanTopple the sandpile Given a matrix of non-negative integers, return a matrix of the same dimensions, but toppled: If the matrix doesn't contain any values larger than 4, return it. Every "cell" that is larger than 3 gets reduced by 4, and all directly neighboring cells (above, below, left, and...

this is also a 4-year-old i7 so...
keep that in mind too if it's faster than your phone CPU you're doing something wrong ;lol
or it's just outclassed.

It's debian on top of android, not native.

@mınxomaτ Same Linux kernel, just different userspace

11:39 PM
ah well that probably has something to do with it
maybe :P

Definitely.

IDK, this is a pure Ubuntu system so meh

Can I run on an Arch system with 4 threads?

he asked for 8 threads
but maybe?
i've got a VM that has only 1 CPU/thread if you want me to test there too lol

@Mendeleev You're more likely to be punished for self promotion than puns (and no I didn't miss your extra pun :P )

11:44 PM
@trichoplax OK

@ETHproductions told ya

but hey, it looks great in here

shrug
I think the green on the previosuly orange buttons is eh

@ETHproductions I just noticed the T in your avatar doesn't align with the middle of the H. That bothers me.

...you're right, huh

11:49 PM
but yeah
it's mostly okay

I guess it can't geometrically, but..

Why are my question names always shorter than 15characters...

@VisualMelon Example?

Actually, thinking about it, that's probably a really bad sample bias on my part...
I've only asked 3 questions, and I think only one of them I had to make longer...
in this instance, "Office Escape" is too short

11:52 PM
"Office Escape: Code your way out!"
or something more apt after the :

... I think I'll go with that if you don't mind ;)

actually, I'd better go with "Plan your way out"
and not just because it's almost a quote from a film

@VisualMelon go for it

That still doesn't look right to me

11:54 PM
@ETHproductions I like it better. It's clear the base of T is in the center of the H rather than oddly offset

Lemme try extending it by one more pixel:

ehh

"The question you are asking appears subjective an is likely to be closed" - SE doesn't like exclamation marks?

I'm such a perfectionist :P
@VisualMelon The words "your" or "my" sometimes trigger that

11:57 PM
@VisualMelon I think it's more than that. But on PPCG it matters less :P
@ETHproductions I like this one best

The leg of the T is actually two pixels shorter in that one than the back of the E (1 pixel shorter in the other one)
But it is clearer that the T ends there
And at this size it doesn't really matter

...woah

@ATaco That's satisfying but also trippier

There's now an upside-down T as well
