I guess that's one way to look at it
@Dennis That's an impressive amount of stars

Indeed

user165474
Is it just me, or does TNB keep loading indefinitely?

@HyperNeutrino Just you

user165474
@Pavel Hm. Strange.

Try pinging Dennis in talk.tryitonline.net

8:09 PM
@HyperNeutrino Do you mean TNB, or TIO?

user165474
@ETH TNB

@DJMcMayhem It is. I hate being the butt of a joke.
6

I don't think pinging Dennis in talk.tryitonline.net is going to help anything then

user165474
Probably not. It doesn't cause any latency, but it's annoying to watch the blue wheel going round and round and round and ...

@ETHproductions Oops, yeah I misread that

8:11 PM
@Dennis Oh, I didn't mean to make you feel bad. Sorry. :-/

@AdmBorkBork Hint: butt of a joke

Oh.
whistles innocently

... -_-

This is a list of unusual deaths. This list includes only unique or extremely rare circumstances of death recorded throughout history, noted as being unusual by multiple sources. Note: some of the deaths are mythological or are considered to be unsubstantiated by contemporary researchers. Oxford Dictionaries defines the word "unusual" as "not habitually or commonly occurring or done" and "remarkable or interesting because different from or better than others." Some other articles also cover deaths that might be considered unusual or ironic, including list of entertainers who died during a performance...

user165474
why...

8:17 PM
because it's hilarious
> 620 BCE: Draco, Athenian law-maker, was smothered to death by gifts of cloaks and hats showered upon him by appreciative citizens at a theatre on Aegina.

user165474
... That is indeed strange

> 2011: Fagilyu Mukhametzyanov, 49, had been wrongly declared dead after suffering a heart attack when she woke up in a coffin at her own funeral in Kazan, Russia. As she saw and heard the mourning relatives she started screaming and suffered yet another heart attack, this time fatal.
that one is just sad

user165474
oh wow. That is sad

No objective criterion for determining 'unusual', 0/10

user165474
Yeah. :P

user165474
8:20 PM
close vote for "primarily opinion based"

user165474
Shouldn't all popcons be closed for that?

Considering we close basically all the popcons anyway...

user165474
true...

user165474
That's mostly because most of them aren't good enough

user165474
Probably because there's no objective criterion

8:22 PM
Just the boring ones.
The latest popcon doesn't have a single close vote.

Speaking of Popcons, I really should type up my Spaghetti Sort challenge.

user165474
True.

> 1993: Garry Hoy, a 38-year-old lawyer in Toronto, Canada, fell to his death on 9 July 1993 after he threw himself against a window on the 24th floor of the Toronto-Dominion Centre in an attempt to prove to a group of visitors that the glass was "unbreakable", a demonstration he had done many times before. The glass did not break, but popped out of the window frame, and Hoy fell to his death.
I've heard this one before, but it makes me laugh every time

XDD

The question is, did the glass still not break when it hit the ground?

user165474
8:27 PM
Famous last words: "Well at least it didn't break"

> 1871: Clement Vallandigham, a lawyer and Ohio, U.S., politician defending a man on a charge of murder, accidentally shot himself demonstrating how the victim might have shot himself while in the process of drawing a weapon when standing from a kneeling position. Though the defendant, Thomas McGehan, was ultimately cleared, Vallandigham died from his wound

user165474
wow

And... the one right after it is better:
> 1884: Allan Pinkerton, the founder of the Pinkerton Detective Agency, was in Chicago, Illinois when he tripped on the pavement and severely bit on his tongue. His tongue became infected with gangrene, ultimately leading to his death.

Well this is morbid

Must... resist.. urge... to post more unusual deaths in TNB...

8:35 PM
@ThomasWard posted again

TFW you come up with nearly a dozen alternate solutions all 0-2 bytes longer than the original
4

> 1977: Tina Christopherson, a woman reportedly having an IQ of 189, died when she fanatically drank 4 gallons (15 litres) of water a day to combat stomach cancer.

prolly should make that the last one you post in here
just not to flood TNB

Yeah.
Read the Wikipedia article people

@Riker Broken code is offtopic, I'm assuming this runs for you on your environment, but it's actually invalid and syntaxerrory

8:40 PM
And while you're at it read the list of common misconceptions

@ThomasWard yeah, I'm fixing

Those are less funny

delete for time being?

@Riker no, we can always reopen if it gets closed :)

8:40 PM
I remember reading some of that, I'll have to look at it again

@JanDvorak s/problem/joy

@Riker I have a potential solution for you, but you won't like it.

fixed @ThomasWard
@ThomasWard exec output in globals(), locals() works

@Pavel But at least you'll be less wrong at every party you ever visit in the future (source)

@Riker more errors

8:42 PM
wot
where?

i'm getting 'int' object is not iterable, trying to trace it now

TIL there's nowhere in the Sherlock Holmes series where he actually says "Elementary, my dear Watson"

@ThomasWard oh, might be my example code

@flawr I was trying to read the paper on the laptop, but it doesn't look like English in any orientation. I think it's probably a Cyrillic language

It is Cyrillic as far as I can tell.
I can't make it out though.

9:08 PM
(just in case you want to know where I found those images: reddit.com/r/hmmm)
Ok guys. I know pineapple on pizza seems to be a controversial topic. But this is a whole new level.

@flawr My thought pattern: "Looks nice. Wait, why would they have bills for 0 euros? Oh yeah, Greece uses the Greek alphabet to represent numbers--omicron must stand for some number. Oh wait..."
I did finally get it though :P

@LuisMendo do you want your name to be part of People's Python?
it's a port of python made of PPCG usernames

9:33 PM
For some reason I think @LuisMendo should get divmod

lol

I can get behind that.

I've also asked kenny lau about his, there's a couple other people who's names should go on there
mostly 10k+ rep users who aren't active in chat

I know wat asked to be import, but that's taken.

yeah
all the usernames at the tops will hopefully get finished up

9:36 PM
I wonder how qwerp-derp could be handled, what with the dash and all.

kenny left the site mostly, but I have him as a steam friend

I opened Chrome and now I can't do anything because Edge wants love
I love Windows 10

@Riker Can I be re.search?

9:41 PM
@TuxCopter There's a registry you can change to disable the edge ads.
Lemmesee if I can look it up.

Meh, it don't shows often so I don't think playing with the registry is worth it

Suit yourself. I've never seen an ad in Windows 10 myself, so I always get confused when other people talk about them >_>

They are not common but when they do show they are pretty invasive as there is visibly no way to close it

Is it bad that multiple times a day I let my laptop get so low on battery that it shuts down?

Yes

user165474
9:47 PM
@ETH Probably. It probably won't cause any hard-drive errors, but I wouldn't recommend it (no factual bases though)

@TuxCopter No, actually never.

@ETHproductions Shuts down, or hibernates?

@Zalgo no

why

because as of yet module-specific functions are not being assigned
and you're a sock in addition to being the false zalgo
no aassignments for socks

9:48 PM
that's discrimination

You can be re

^ then

@AdmBorkBork Technically it hibernates

@Pavel not yet
you're the only one who has a module, it's mostly for a precedent

Ok

9:49 PM
@Zalgo there are a good number of builtins left pick one of those (for tux)
none for zalgo though
@TuxCopter do you already have one? idk

Nope

then you can pick a builtin
but seriously none for socks

@ETHproductions If it's actually hibernating, and it has enough battery to finish the hibernation process, it's probably fine. Disruptive to your workflow, but won't cause any actual harm. If it's not finishing hibernation because it runs out of power before the hibernation can flush RAM to disk, then it could be bad. It is going to cause a tiny bit more wear on your disk and battery, but nothing really significant.

I remember hearing that if you don't occasionally fully drain your battery, it damages it.
I think that's a myth though.

OK, good to know. I've heard that it's not good to keep a laptop plugged in all the time, but that doesn't mean that the other extreme is good :P

9:52 PM
@Riker Hm callable

kk

wat
@ETHproductions Keep it within 50-80%, every week or so completely charge it, every other week or so completely discharge it.
@ETHproductions My laptop has a key combination to disable battery charging.
I usually keep it at around 75%.

I keep my laptop at 100

^

wat
you bad

9:53 PM
Because if it isn't plugged in, it dies in like half an hour.

wat
thats bad
what laptop
I know it's a thinkpad

Think UPS and not battery
@wat T420S

wat
> 420 WEED

@Pavel Older NiCad batteries, that was true. Newer Li-Ion batteries don't need that.

wat
The batteries are actually pretty inexpensive

9:54 PM
My laptop is plugged during day and unplugged at night

mine is plugged in during the day and I have a cron job to automatically shut it down at 10pm every night

@wat I mostly use it as a desktop anyway, I use the docking station.

wat
I see

Most modern business laptops are designed to be docked during 90% of the day anyway.

wat
@AdmBorkBork Is my Latitude E6410 designed this way?

9:55 PM
@Riker See, with Windows 10, your computer will restart automatically without any special configuration!
7

lol

@wat Probably. Latitude is their business line.

Unless you regedit it. I feel like every complaint people have with Windows 10 can be disabled from regedit.

lol
@wat 'aw yiss'

I have an E6420, so I guess I should leave it plugged in more

9:57 PM
My daily rig here at work is a Latitude E7450
It spends almost all day docked.

@TuxCopter making "tuxcopter" -> "callable" okay?

wat
@AdmBorkBork yeah I know that, it's just that it's a 2011 laptop running Mac OSX and I'm not sure if the power management is correct
@Riker This is going to be one confusing language

already is

@wat Oh. Likely not, then. Hackintoshes can have weird ACPI settings.

wat
@Riker also, can you PLEASE make "wat" something used a lot?

9:58 PM
uh

Make it open parens

This isn't Lisp\

@wat 'reversed'?

Howabout tab instead?

can't

9:59 PM
public static void main wat String args taw

@Riker you could but it would be really really REALLY ugly

well yeah
but I'm not selling my soul for wat
@wat 'dict' and 'reversed' are prolly the most common ones left
or isinstance and iter

wat
@AdmBorkBork This one is actually an Arrandale CPU laptop which is supported under the default AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext power management kernel extension. I also patched the DSDT that the Clover bootloader masks the default DSDT with so that the laptop appears as a MacBook Pro, mid-2010, 15-inch, and I also used a few patches to enable power management.

@Riker Yp

kk added ya
@wat so do I make you 'reversed' or do you want to wait until the rest are taken so you can be 'string', 'math', 're', etc.?

wat
10:03 PM
How often are those used?

the modules?
idk
reversed is somewhat common though

wat
OK, reversed then, although I would greatly prefer import
Why can't you make it tab?

Anonymous
Token parsing would break

yeah

wat
I see...

Anonymous
10:07 PM
Also I thought you wanted something common, not heretical

I can't really make tab that, because tokenizer doesn't support whitespace well (if at all I honestly don't think it does)
@Mego eye twitches

wat
Can't you just do a find and replace before the tokenizing, replacing all \n(wat)+ with \t?

nope
because that would break strings
@wat it's not happening, sorry

wat
@Riker how?
I don't understand spaces for indents. Tabs were literally made for indents.

tabs aren't just for indents though
they can be used in strings, however uncommon
and it would break those, however uncommon it is, so I'm not going to change it

Anonymous
10:08 PM
'''
wat''' # would break

wat
no, but replacing the string "wat" with a tab only at the beginning of the line
...I guess you're right.

It would also be a complete pain to work with.

wat
@Mego How many people would put wat inside a multiline string anyway?

Anonymous
@wat Tabs were created for indents in a less-civilized time. We're not barbarians - we can use spaces.

random is common.

Anonymous
10:09 PM
@wat You, probably

@Pavel kritixi already called it

wat
@Pavel This whole language would also be a complete pain to work with.

@wat Yeah, but your chipset and whatnot may still not match. Given that it's six years old, your battery is probably as broken as it will get anyway, though, so you're likely not hurting anything.

wat
@Mego Why spaces though?

YMMV, IANAL, professional driver on closed course, etc. Disclaimers.

Anonymous
10:10 PM
@wat Easier to do fine-grained indentation, consistent appearance between editors, etc.

wat
@AdmBorkBork Yeah true. Power management works almost perfectly though. I actually get about 2-3 hours of battery liife when using Linux and 3-3.5 hours in Windows.

oi tha'ts not flag worthy methinks

@Mego Why do you need fine grained indentation in the first place?

Anonymous
@Riker Clearly someone disagrees

Anonymous
@Pavel Python

10:11 PM
I python
Have had not problems with tabs

Anonymous
Using tabs instead of spaces is like using a shard of glass instead of a scalpel

Anonymous
Sure, it cuts the same, but you don't have as much precision

wat
@Mego For fine grained indentation you use tabs first and then adjust with spaces. Consistent appearance, this makes it more consistent, and also makes it possible for individual contributors to set their indent size however they like, without having to make huge edits.

Anonymous
What if the code looks best with 3 spaces of indentation (using tab = 4 spaces convention)?

wat
@Mego Yeah, but in this case, you're making a stained glass window.

Anonymous
10:13 PM
@wat A project should have consistent style. That argument isn't valid.

wat
@Mego Then set tab to be 3 spaces wide in your editor.

@wat That gives indentation error in python 3 iirc

Anonymous
Mixing tabs and spaces is even worse than just using tabs

wat
@Mego No, but I mean that if one contributor prefers 4 spaces, and another one prefers 2, then they can just set tab size instead of having to run the code through a prettifier.
@Pavel That's because it's python.

@Mego I agree with that

wat
10:14 PM
@Mego You don't need "fine grained indentation" in most cases. When you do, you can use spaces

Anonymous
No matter which side of the war you are on, mixing tabs and spaces is not ok

wat
Why?

@Mego I can get behind this one.

Anonymous
@wat Or just always use spaces so that it's consistent

wat
> consistent
THE POINT IS THAT TABS ARE MORE CONSISTENT

Anonymous
10:14 PM
Let's not shout

also thats not really true
if you always use spaces: consistent
if you sometimes use tabs sometimes use spaces: inconsistent

Anonymous
Tabs are just as consistent as spaces assuming everyone uses the same editor preferences. But that assumption doesn't hold most of the time, so you get code that looks different with different settings. However, always using either tabs or spaces is much more consistent than using both.

Just use tabs
They're golfier

wat
@Pavel This

Anonymous
That's not really star-worthy...

wat
10:17 PM
imo it is

ok, this argument is going to do very little
you can't actually convince someone spaces/tabs is better

@Riker user23013 should be __name__

@Riker I appreciate the offer, but my knowledge of Python is almost null. In fact, I've never written a real program in Python :-)

Sooo? It's about PPCG, not about Python :P

@Riker Oh, sorry I misunderstood :-) If it's just using my name for a function, yes, why not!
@DJMcMayhem I read too fast as usual
@flawr There's no accumarray in Python, is there? :-)
So how will the name assignment be decided on?

10:35 PM
@LuisMendo First-come First-serve

Hah. Okay

Except I think wat just took reversed

I think I'll follow flawr's advice and pick divmod

@Riker ^

And thanks for taking me into account, you all!

10:38 PM
I always type out EasterlyIrk, realize it isn't working because it's supposed to be in smallcaps, then realize it's now Riker >_>

Oh, I hadn't even noticed it was him! The avatar is too small here to recognize the cat

o.0
It's been that way for over a month I think

Yeah, whatever :-P
What do we do with Kenny Lau? He definitely deserves to be in this, but he's on a long break
So we'll choose for him I guess
And maybe better use his changed name, Leaky Nun

I mean, it's not like there's a deadline for this being done
Actually.... @Riker want to feed People's Python into here?

@LuisMendo @Pavel sorry was waiting out the 30min chat suspension
@Pavel no

10:41 PM
Damm links

oh
sure

@Riker Huh? What did you do?

said mego was insane for liking spaces over tabs
@LuisMendo it was kinda dumb, especially because watermelon also got suspended for saying tabs are good
@Mego also, I think that's an abuse of star clearing powers
he starred because he wanted to indicate agreement, which is one of the reasons stars should be used
@Pavel done btw

Coolio

@LuisMendo I'm a steam friend with him, I"ve already contacted him but he hasn't responded yet

10:44 PM
This will make for either intresting polyglots, or no answers.
I'm really not sure.

(prolly because hong kong is on the other side of the world :P)

@Riker Oh, nice. When is he coming back? He had some very important exams

@LuisMendo making you divmod, @wat making you "reversed"

wat
OK

@LuisMendo no clue, haven't talked with him about that

10:44 PM
@Riker \o/

shoudl I put you in just as "luismendo"?

docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/… Huh, DLosc managed to make a submission without without me noticing.

^ What did you do with others?

Martin Ender is just Martin

all lowercase with only a few exceptions that I'm planning on fixing later

10:46 PM
Can it be just Luis then?

and for the most part (except for really important users like martin) 1 name per person

Leftgoat would like to contest that

well yeah >_>
that wasn't under my control though, helka owned it then

To be fair, upgoat and downgoat for min and max makes complete sense.

> "len":"lynn"
Haha, so fitting!

10:49 PM
yep

@LuisMendo D: You don't have a submission to the time capsule!
You should totally make one, it'll be fun.

@Pavel I was reading about that. What is it, specifying a language or somthing?

You are committing to create a language by the end of the year.
Next year, there will be some challenge about all of them, probably polyglot related.
Conveniently serves a collection of 2017 languages created by PPCG users.

Clearly should add the Programming Language of Unknown Completeness answers to the time capsule

@Pavel So by participating I need to create a language? Hm I think I'll pass, that's a lot of work

10:53 PM
Question: In C++, what's the difference between a type*, a type, a type&, and a type&&? Do type&&&s exist?

@LuisMendo too bad.
You've got all year though!

^^ That looks more Mathematica than C++ to me :-P

You can even make something trivial, like a BF derivative!

pls dont
no more needed

I may want to do something like that some time. But I don't want to commit to doing it

10:55 PM
@Pavel What are you talking about?

The time capsule

i have an idea but im lazy ;-;

You commit to making a language by the end of the year
There will then be a challenge written about it.

Hmm
Gimme an hour

10:56 PM
brave man

Submit here
Feel free to submit multiple langs.

@Pavel i actually began with a few files and functions

Does the language need to be truly turing complete?

TY for "Not a golfing language"
Best name
@LliwTelracs It has to follow the requirements of the site.

So answers to this challenge wouldn't work?

i heard we will get a new design by the roman new year
