@Dennis possibly
Question: why does the Community user keep protecting the sandbox thread followed by a mod unprotecting it every so often?
my guess would be that the community user protecting it is happening automatically
I figured that, maybe because there's so many answers to it?
It keep protecting it because many answers are deleted
Yeah, it detects lots of answers (and deleted ones) as "this is attracting crap" IIRC
15:15
Yep
Ooooh, and we want it unprotected so that new users can post to it
Neat this question have 123 upvotes
@Yodle Exactly
More importantly, I just got a Nice Answer badge on Skeptics.
On what answer?
Uh, something about clown laws.
15:17
srs
Seriously
@Geobits Well, you changed your avatar. Again.
And you didn't. Now that we have our status checks out of the way...
ping
@Poke ICMP PONG, a lot of ms
15:19
Well now I have my status check out of the way
Unexpected input on line 0. Received data: pong
RST
@Poke print("Hello, World!")
Hello, World!
@Poke public class A{public static void main(String[]a){System.out.println("Hai");}}
15:21
Hai
@Poke Fun fact, when I was in college, the CS department (who was halfway integrated with the IT department) had a server named PONG -- its sole responsibility was to function as a network connectivity test. It had multiple interfaces and was technically "on" every logically separated network.
@TimmyD That sounds like a security concern
Is Zzo38 on PPCG?
@Poke print(__import__('sys').version)
#swear last one
If I remember right, it was some minified Linux distro that they compiled from scratch. Essentially it had only the basics needed to perform that function.
15:23
@EriktheGolfer Access Denied.
@Poke oh gosh i cant see python version now :(
Check your file permissions
@Poke f=lambda f:f(f);f(f)
@TimmyD I dunno... people are pretty crafty
(lemme burn the world plz)
15:25
Of course, that same college also had my favorite professor quote of all time -- "How can access be denied?! I am God!"
@TuxCopter Sandboxed computation timed out.
@TuxCopter this takes a function f. then, it executes it with itself as an argument. pointless
My file permissions all scream 666 at me :o
vi vi vi = 666
@EriktheGolfer It segfault my python
15:26
@Geobits Seems right to me. You're the only one who uses your computer after all, right?
def f():
 try:
  f()
 except:
  f()
f()
Another neat way to segfault
@Poke Nope. Minibits has his own user. Plus, was yolk.
well turns out you're screwed
gonna go read all your docs now
@TuxCopter well, you gave f as an argument of f. f will then execute f with the argument f which will be executed with the argument f...
15:28
@Poke Have fun. If you come back scarred for life, don't say I didn't warn you :D
I see all the usual suspects here in your documents folder
@Geobits What do you mean?
first 1000 digits of pi
@Poke Did you find passwords.txt yet? That's a good one.
2fa recovery codes
is that one in a subfolder?
15:29
Oh right. It's in the one called secret
oh gotcha
there is no reason to talk about me like that in your password :|
I'm looking at the specs for the esolang Memfractal, and there doesn't seem to be a clear description of where execution starts, how input/output happens, or even what order the "bits" should be read from the fractal when considering memory.
@Poke Umm, I meant some other Poke, I swear >_>
@Geobits ah ok common mistake. my apologies
time for my prelunch meeting
Funnily enough, I do have a disproportionate amount of files on my computer that start with "poke"
15:30
byebye
adios
@Geobits Probably all those pokemon files...
Most likely :)
Pokemon Go...
15:31
γεια
Gaia = Earth
But IDK for geia
Gaia is the neutral player in Age of Empires
Gaia is an Illusion
I have AOE3, and there is no Geia or Gaia
15:32
AOE3 doesn't exist.
I have it
We don't talk about the abomination.
There is no abomination
It's just plain ol' Age of Empires 3
@KritixiLithos It's γεια, roughly transliterated as gheia, meaning bye. A better transliteration would be ya.
I suppose that's why nobody plays AOE3, but everyone still plays AOE2
15:33
I used to play AOE3
Illusion of Gaia is still better than any AOE:
@EriktheGolfer Or yea
@Geobits When did it come out?
I just had an amazing idea for an esolang!
@KritixiLithos No, that is γιεα, γιαια or γυαια, a word that doesn't exist.
15:35
:O:O:O
@KritixiLithos mid-90s I think. SNES time, so, yeah.
@mbomb007 What is it?
@Geobits SNES reminds me of... oh gosh.
I'm going to do it, so just wait and see.
noice, I just found a scoping error in JLisp
@Geobits lol, I wasn't even born then
15:36
@KritixiLithos Are you from the 2000s too?
@KritixiLithos Yeah, most kids weren't :P
Also, who knows what AOE is? I'm a retro gamer, not a video gamer.
Age of Empire
> I'm a retro gamer, not a video gamer.
AOE is a retro game
I meant it in another sense.
15:39
Kids these days, don't even know about WOLOLO
@Fatalize :'(
And how can you be retro gamer but not video gamer o_O
Yeah, I don't do series, I only do one-piece games.
@TuxCopter Playing retro games, not 2000s and 2010 video-games.
AoE came in the 90's though
@Fatalize When you're hungry: 3
15:40
Even games in 1980 were video games
At the time.... now they are also called retro games, something modern games aren't.
I played "retro" games when they came out, so I guess I win?
shhh hah
@Geobits Playing retro games doesn't count when the player is also retro
5
@TuxCopter Please do not click the link, it's harmful for humanity's sense of hearing.
15:42
That's just a new-generation rickroll
@EriktheGolfer Yes
@Fatalize Says the young kid trying to sound retro ;)
I'm not that young :(
@Geobits I think trying to look the opposite, but hiding the truth... 1990s kids do not deserve to be called retro-gamers, they are retro themselves.
And wololo isn't that old :P
15:43
I'm a rebel. I played Age of Empires before I was 13.
I played the first Mario game Donkey Kong (which is from the 1980s I think) online
@mbomb007 Me too!
I gotta admit, we didn't know how to change the difficulty at first, so we got screwed by the Moderate AI.
@KritixiLithos Donkey... King? That was counterfeit!
I also didn't know that building villagers was a good strat.
Moderate is pretty tough
@EriktheGolfer Er... I meant Donkey Kong
15:45
@KritixiLithos When you only have 3 villagers, anything is tough.
I didn't build houses
Yeah, I couldn't get more than 20 people
@KritixiLithos I only explored by building towers.
Their sight range explored for me.
I built trading posts
Also, why do some people (including mbomb007, TimmyD) still have Halloween avatars???
Because it doesn't matter at all, most likely.
15:46
@EriktheGolfer What do you mean?
@mbomb007 TimmyD still has the Halloween avatar, as you can see on the right.
The trains going through the trading posts gave me a ton of vision
Anyone know where I can start learning about compilers? Ideally relating to C#?
The Dragon book
Microsoft
15:47
^ no
Open Group
@KritixiLithos I was amazed when my dad got to the bronze age.
I'd never made it past the tool age.
Or w/e the 2nd age was called.
My dad played really good, he taught me the game and tips and tricks
@TuxCopter No to the dragon book or no to Microsoft
My dad got to level 100+ on the Ottoman so that it was easy when I played using the Ottoman empire
15:49
No to Micro$oft! REVOLUTION!!!!!!
@KritixiLithos Another game I grew up with (I got it in a cereal box): Chex Quest
@TuxCopter Spit it out, come on! No to Micro$oft!
@EriktheGolfer All hallows Eve is tomorrow, so it's still topical :)
@KritixiLithos Level?
@EriktheGolfer Because boo.
15:50
:O
@MetaEd Boo... it's Movember now, put a mustache!
@mbomb007 The level of your place/character
@EriktheGolfer I'd be shocked if half the people in this room could grow a mustache worthy of Movember.
@PhiNotPi The Java question got onto the HNQ and I woke up to this
@KritixiLithos Age of Empires 3?
noice
@mbomb007 Yes. But I don't remember if it was called level, maybe somehting else
@Geobits If collective, it will grow enough. I might put one up too, if the desire goes high enough, because it is team work.
laaame
@EriktheGolfer Pumpkins are still a November thing ...
15:51
Does it count if I am too lazy to shave?
@mbomb007 How much did you get to?
My next avatar picture will be a poppy.
@KritixiLithos I played AOE and AOE2, which are both better.
@VTCAKAVSMoACE What? I have experience higher numbers on that.
@mbomb007 What no! They have worse graphics to start with
15:52
+100 for the assoc bonus lol
@KritixiLithos The gameplay is better. Ask anyone. They're even rated higher.
I never understood why people liked any AoE game, personally.
@Geobits WOLOLO
Now you like it
@Geobits Well, they're better than Stronghold
@KritixiLithos Really? You're basing how good a game is on its graphics? :-/

15:53
The strategy is so intense in AoE
@mbomb007 That's not much of an argument :P
@Geobits :D
@TuxCopter I don't think so. I have had over 2k for assoc bonus (all communities of course).
@TimmyD No, I mean I haven't played them, just watched a friend play AoE2 and its graphics sucked
I like low-graphic games like NetHack, though
@KritixiLithos It is still being developed on, even. They released a new expansion a couple years ago, along with an HD version. All new graphics.
15:54
@KritixiLithos Donny, you're out of your element.
Nethack isn't "low-graphics", it's just Rogue with a skin.
@KritixiLithos Rather low graphics than horrible gameplay like AoE 3
You can't even kill the explorers. They just lay on the ground and cry until you rescue them.

A: Sandbox for Proposed Challenges

ETHproductionsWhat will you bring for Thanksgiving? code-golf polyglot kolmogorov-complexity Thanksgiving in the United States is coming up on November 24th. Many people will have a large dinner with their families, traditionally including turkey and many side dishes. This typically means the family members ...

Nethack is "low-graphics" in the same way that Zork is "low-graphics" -- i.e., none.
@TimmyD Graphics can be a bad experience. Not because they're old or "bad" by today's standards, but if they're jarring, mismatched, or not well done, it can drag down an otherwise decent game.
15:56
But to watch the gameplay in AoE2 hurts my eyes
@TimmyD NetHack have more 'graphics' than Zork though
@KritixiLithos Uh huh, sure. At least I don't turn in "cards" for units.
Geo, Tux -- both true.
@mbomb007 Having decks of cards is a critical part of the strategy. You require different hand-made decks for different maps
I think he knows that and doesn't like it ;)
15:58
Ships for Carribean, The Great Bombard for land maps
The strategy is nice in AoE3
@NewSandboxedPosts Thanksgiving? Oh no, I can't. I advise you to use corn and turkey.
@KritixiLithos quora.com/…
The Great Bombard is the best artillery weapon in the game
