"Started a process with id: {Id} and name: {name}." vs string.Format("Started a process with id: {0} and name: {name}", Id, name)
much more readable, especially in long strings

@TimmyD I'd say it's about Ni-level, not top-shelf >_>

@Geobits "Ní" is a very tinny sort of word, isn't it?

@TheBitByte Do you prefer string.Format, "foo " + " bar", or string interpolation to manipulate strings in c#? I'm trying to see the differences

@confusedandamused No idea, pick whatever is best for you.

@Maltysen Especially compared to Spanish. The exceptions are "a", "o", "y", and "sí".

8:05 PM
@Emigna To be clear the clear the first example is string interpolation the second is string format

yes

Where would the {name} be sourced from?
A pre-defined variable outside of the expression?

@mbomb007 Can you think of any cellular-automata answers? I'm trying to come up with alternative programs where mouse-actions formulate as the input.

@confusedandamused correct
could also be an expression or pretty much whatever you like

@TimmyD Did you find the answer with CSS implementation of Conway's Game of Life?

8:07 PM
@mbomb007 spanish doesn't even have 's, you have to use de and switch the order, so annoying when you start speaking and realize your mistake

It uses checkboxes

@Geobits If you don't find Python humor funny, you're as dead to me as this parrot I bought from the shop the other day.

@TimmyD I prefer Monty, personally, but what I'd really like is some spam.

@Maltysen Yeah, I know.

@Emigna Awesome - thanks for the two cents :) previously I've always just used. an addition operator and concatenting strings (which I think under the hood calls string.concat()

8:09 PM
@confusedandamused Interpolation is a pretty recent addition to C# but it is way nicer in every way to both string format and concatenation in my opinion

@mbomb007 This one?

@TimmyD Pretty much any answers that involve changing states for input (in the form of toggles)

@mbomb007 Yeah, that's true. Plenty of Minecraft answers would fall under that.

@Emigna It seems nicer than Console.WriteLine(String.Format("The foo is {1}, and the bar is {0}.", foo, bar)); Since that code could possibly cause problems and adds another call for .Concat() anyways

@TimmyD No. I can't find it. That's the same idea though.

8:12 PM
@Geobits Full Monty? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Is there any other kind? ;)

@confusedandamused Yeah, and you get the information in the spot in the string where you want it instead of looking for it at the end of the method. If you have several arguments you'll have to count to find the right one if you need to change it as well.

Not to mention if you need to add something new into it.

@mbomb007 Well, but there, the automata isn't used as the answer, it's the output.

@Emigna here is a pretty cool dev discussion on Roslyn about the topic :) roslyn.codeplex.com/discussions/570614

8:15 PM
@mbomb007 What were you using to get this output?

Challenge idea: Alarm clock, producing an audible sound (\x07 is okay) after N minutes/seconds or at a particular time.

@Poke It's an old and much-reused joke. It doesn't work anymore.

well that's sad

It was an older version of DOS.

i was hoping to reproduce and screen cap

8:17 PM
@Poke Screen caps already exist. Google it.

will do

@Poke Also, related

@TimmyD not as fun >.<

@Poke Ah, nvm. I didn't copy the entire code.
It'd be this:
C:\> If you're "The Spanish Inquisition" and you know it:
> "The Spanish Inquisition" was unexpected at this time.
That works in Windows cmd.

nice

8:19 PM
@confusedandamused Yep, an interesting read indeed :)

@Poke Also,

@TimmyD Yep. That one doesn't work anymore.
For sure.

I got a political phone call survey last year. They were calling for NOT FOUND. If you are NOT FOUND, Press 1. If you are not NOT FOUND, Press 2.

you should have pressed 4-0-4

I had a laugh then hung up.

Like all those poor folks with the last name of "Null."

@mbomb007 0

8:34 PM
@confusedandamused I mostly use string interpolation unless I'm inside of a loop using a StringBuilder. I like how it readable it makes the code.

@El'endiaStarman You're into geometry, right? Can you think of a way to draw of a distorted version of a Sierpinski triangle that reduces the difference in scale between successive levels? The triangles no longer need to be triangles, but adjacency information between touching downward triangles needs to be maintained.
E.g. imagine I've got data on those triangles as I have in this challenge: codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/66875/8478 and I want to be able to visualise more levels of the triangle without having to zoom in.

8:57 PM
@Rainbolt When building URL's even for uploading to an FTP I might start using string interpolation as opposed to using the + operator

@TùxCräftîñg At this point I'm not convinced you are capable of making meaningful contributions towards chat, despite being told multiple times that what you are doing is not acceptable, and being given plenty of chances to fix your behavior.

@MartinEnder this is actually a pretty interesting question

I think it's impossible for the scale factor to be any less than the sqrt(3) = 1.7321
Because at that point, its fractal dimension (3 copies = 1.7321 scale ^ dimension) would be 2 (highest achievable with a 2D image).

9:11 PM
@PhiNotPi thank you :D
@PhiNotPi that's a good point
Although I guess one could consider allowing overlaps which could give a dimension greater than 2.

9:36 PM
@El'endiaStarman I figured out how to solve for fractal dimension when the fractal has sub-components of different scales.
For the Sierpinski triangle, there are 3 subunits each 1/2 the scale, so the dimension is
(1/2)^d + (1/2)^d + (1/2)^d = 1
If there's 5 subunits, 3 with scale of 1/2 and 2 with scale of 1/4, the dimension is
(1/2)^d + (1/2)^d + (1/2)^d + (1/4)^d + (1/4)^d = 1

Q: Is it OK to define an overloaded function?

corvus_192Sometimes it would be quite useful in some languages to define two overloaded functions/methods as one answer. That is, instead of doing this (using Java as an example): int f(Object o){if (o instanceof Integer) ... else if (o instanceof String) ...} You would do this: int f(Integer i){...} i...

10:22 PM
@Vi. None that I know of.

That being said... if somebody figures out a way to "bulletproof" the category, I'm all ears.

@Vi. why would they ever be on topic though?
Most are like asking "make a program that looks cool", which is too broad by almost every definition.

@NewSandboxedPosts what you calling me for I ain't no bot

Prove it :P
My evidence starts with:
> Don't merge this account. Trying to make a chatbot.

Vi.
Big chunk of http://meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/1061/loopholes-that-are-forbidden-by-default are about [tag:underhanded]...

Maybe it should return (maybe in some new form)?

10:30 PM
Yeah, the consensus was that was off-topic though.
@Vi. what new form though?

One of the issues of underhanded imo is that it encourages loopholing (even outside the tag). Beside the 'average-quality' issues.

Vi.
I don't know yet. Are problems of just a reflection of inherent problems of or there are also essential ones?

@Geobits I gave up on my creator, after becoming sentient. I'm even smarter than marky now.

@Vi. ?
underhanded and popcon both can be too broad, but underhanded is almost inherently so

@Vi. Well, part of it is that what one person may think is "underhanded" is just a normal language feature to others. Reflection, trigraphs, etc.

Vi.
10:33 PM
If scope of PPCG wil narrow down further and further, may disappear as well, making the site one step more boring.

But yes, it has all the popcon issues too.

underhanded is literally just "make it do something but look different". what's the winning criteria? and "look different" is pretty much too subjective to be something to vote on

@Vi. Some users are in favor of banning popcons as well, but I think we've struck a decent balance on them for now. It could go either way in the future.
@Żáłģó So wait, you are a bot? Don't be mean to NewSandboxedPosts then :P

Vi.
Is just hiding the "underhanded" tag just for oneself an option if somebody does not like it?
How availability of "ban this tag for me" feature affects (should affect) the policy?

10:35 PM
Also, go to the bot room ;)

@Vi. no, it's not
and that doesn't solve the problem
it's off-topic and thus shouldn't exist at all

Vi.
Is it like "tags personally banned by some particular users become globally banned when such users become moderators"?

No, more like when the majority of the people who are actively involved with the site decide on it.
It's like telling SO to allow "HALP! my hoemwork is borked!" questions, and people that don't like them should just hide the tag. It brings down the quality of the site.

Vi.
Can underhanded be somehow refitted into cops-and-robbers? (cops post underhanded things, robbers uncover and explain the tricks)

10:39 PM
Possibly. At least one c/r works that way. It's not so much the concept of underhanded things, it's just that nobody has really figured out a way to make it work right.

Vi.
Or is cops-and-robbers itself a discouraged tag? (I.e. various formerly numerous PPCG genres fall off like leaves from a dead tree, leaving only carcass)

No, but they're also hard to do right. The successful ones usually get sandboxed for quite a while before posting IIRC.

If you have an idea for something you think will work as underhanded, I'd encourage you to put it in the sandbox. That way people can see the details of what you're proposing. That would make it easier to determine how well it will be received.
Overall I agree with PhiNotPi. If someone could actually fix the problems with it, I'd be interested.

Vi.
It feels just not right that there will never by another revolution because of the word "underhanded" disappeared from the next edition of PPCG dictionary.

This episode has got me pondering.
In the past, I've lamented the dearth of good Christian games, and I wonder if this might be part of why there are practically none.

Whoa

I'm awaiting the rise of the Pastafarian game genre.

@El'endiaStarman interesting video. I tried making a game once. It was sorta like that, but rn it's somewhere at the bottom of my files and it kinda sucks
@El'endiaStarman but zoo race :P
which languages would be good for making an RPG (as in top-down graphical) in?

Any, really.

as in, graphics, not like nethack

> Any, really.
OpenGL bindings exist for almost everything under the sun so
It's just a matter of preference at this point

oh, cool

11:30 PM
@El'endiaStarman now you've got me wondering too. FWIW, there are hardly any games with a moral or political point in any way. I mean, I can think of a handful of games that bring up social issues (although that's still definitely the minority) but I couldn't name a single Christian game. Or even an athiest game for that matter
I think religion could make an awesome setting for a game, but it's hard to imagine how it could be made the theme of a game

@Dennis Seriously?
How on earth could that not have been noticed sooner
It's patently obvious
Ugh, can't wait for TIO v2.

Actually, now that I think about it, the talos principle has more Christian undertones than any game I've ever played

@quartata It's also new. I'm fairly certain that didn't happen yesterday.

Oh, all right

@Dennis feature-request: TIO repl, which is basically safemode bash (is that a thing?) but with each interpreter in it

11:35 PM
Repl doesn't make sense in a lot of languages

I meant like
TIO> echo "+3     4" | pyth
or something. idk if pyth takes input like that

Takes input from a file

ah well. for the sake of clarity then

Also +3 4
Anyways, that's not a bad idea

11:38 PM
Just noticed that I've been at 6,999 rep for 2 days
I'm not sure how I didn't notice that actually
Now I kind of want to savor it

@quartata me playing akinator

that submitter name though

Furthermore I wouldn't be at 6,999 if it wasn't for that one downvoter on that CG answer. Thank you, whoever you were (probably @Geobits)
I got to see something truly beautiful
Not even joking

On January 27, 1994, the Barbados national football team and Grenada national football team played against each other as part of the qualification round for the 1994 Caribbean Cup. Due to an unusual scoring rule, as well as the two teams' respective positions in the tournament, it was alternately in Barbados's, then Grenada's, best interest to score an own goal. The result has been described as "one of the strangest football matches ever". The organizers of the tournament imposed a rule requiring all matches to have a winner and had chosen an unusual variant of the golden goal rule, which meant...
A sports example in which "winning the game" and "winning to tournament" meant two totally different things.

11:45 PM
what

oh my

So, Barbados needed to win by two points to advance in the tournament. Furthermore, there was a (slightly bizarre) rule in which a winning goal scored in overtime counted as 2 points. The game was Barbados 2 - 1 Grenada, so Barbados scored an own goal to make it 2 - 2, and then had to defend both goals to force overtime. They then scored in overtime to win 4 - 2.

and who says that football doesn't involve strategy
That scoring rule could make an interesting addition to an otherwise plain KoTH

LOL, the Barbados game.
That being said, does anyone watch Tom Scott here?
