@Geobits Microsoft tried that. They got sued by the government for anti-competitive behavior.

So really, the government is to blame for IE.

@βετѧΛєҫαγ The number of dog faces in avatars is kind of scary

can someone explain how this is possible?

@GamrCorps they did a bounty?

16k year rep with only <16k actual rep

2:03 PM
@BusinessCat also, weirdly, britain uses some imperial units and some SI

@GamrCorps And a member for only 7 months..

@Maltysen I only use imperial for road measurements

@GamrCorps he has offered some bounties

oh ok

The US is slowly getting used to the metric system. Ask people how big a liter or two-liter is and they'll have a pretty good idea, and bottled water is pretty much standardized on 500mL. Pokémon GO and other international games like that are getting people used to the idea of a meter. Engines are measured in liters or cc, and people understand that.

2:08 PM
Kind of scary how a game is teaching the US how to use a scientific measurement system

The method of success for any takeover -- indoctrinate the young. ;-)

@TimmyD My parents know a pokemon other than Pikachu now

My parents still call any video game playing, even on a computer, "Playing Nintendo"

@TimmyD what is it if not playing?

@GamrCorps because I am a legend
jk

2:13 PM
@muddyfish Not sure I understand your question...

For the first time ever (I think?) one of my challenges has been closed for good ;_;

@HelkaHomba link?

@HelkaHomba Which one? ;_;

15
Q: Write a program that outputs the number of times it has been run

Helka HombaIn a programming language of your choice, write a full program that, when run, prints a positive integer N and then modifies its own source file such that the next time it is run it will print N+1. For example, this (ungolfed) Python 3 program satisfies this behavior: N = 1 print(N) with open(_...

@TimmyD I think the case was slightly more complex than that ;)

2:15 PM
Oh well, no hard feelings :D

@Geobits Well, sure, if you want to get all technical and stuff. :D

If there was one person in here who I'd guess would stick up for Microsoft... :P

@HelkaHomba Yeah, I felt a little bad because you're a really excellent challenge writer, but I couldn't see any real distinction between the two. Especially when I compared the bash answers and they were almost identical.
@Geobits waves hand Pay no attention to the icon to the left of my name, or to my $DAYJOB ...

The Pythons were identical too (before the edit)

@TimmyD why, what do you do?

2:18 PM
I'm not the first one to post an alphabet challenge:
41
Q: Draw the Sawtooth Alphabet

Helka HombaA simple one today. Write the shortest program that draws a "sawtooth alphabet" given a positive integer for the height. You must write the name of your programming language when you come to the letter it starts with. For example, if your language is Python and the input is 1 the output should b...

@LeakyNun Pretty sure there are tons of alphabet challenges

@LeakyNun Surely I'm not either..?

@TimmyD It's been a while since I've played with IE. Maybe I should install it on Ubuntu and give it a fair try >_>

@Maltysen I'm an Exchange administrator

oh

2:22 PM
@Geobits Nah. Install Ubuntu on Windows and give it a fair try that way. :D

@Maltysen His job is explaining to people that Power Shell is not a Koopa Troopa attack.

> yes Mr. CEO, i understand that it seems like you are paying for a mario bros game for your employees, but its actually slightly more useful than that

only slightly :P

I've heard Super Mario Maker is Turing complete, and only slightly more cumbersome than PS, soooo...

2:30 PM
I don't have the studies on hand to back this up, but having mario in the breakroom might actually increase productivity more than having powershell on the computers.

I just wondered, there is probably not a general procedure that a language is not turing complete?

pls halp @LeakyNun is better than me at my own language

@Fatalize add new features

and don't document them, hmm good idea…

@Fatalize I can read Prolog

2:35 PM
I like it when I have to view chat fast forwarded :)

@Fatalize Soon there will be nobody to compete with you in Brachylog

@LeakyNun Why should it? 14 + 24 is already different from 24+34 so I don't this how this can possibly work

@Fatalize then why does it not say false

@LeakyNun It will integer divide all so that the result is [1:1:1:1]

2:43 PM
I know I shouldn't brag, but it's the first time I got to compete with the best golfed solutions using !sed! There was a recent question closed as duplicate, so I posted to the original I think.
0
A: Incrementing Numbers, Over Multiple Sessions

seshoumaraGNU sed, 14 bytes Usually I post sed answers just to add to the diversity of languages used for a question, since sed code gets long fast, but this is one of those rare occasions where I can compete. $=;$eecho>>s Run: sed -nf s s The assumption is that the source filename is called s. A sed ...

@Fatalize I just realized it

Stupid minds think alike

If great minds think alike, and stupid minds think alike, then does that mean average minds think alike or differently?

@Fatalize why does this need no labelling?

@LeakyNun My approach?

2:47 PM
@Fatalize the current posted 27 byte solution

@LeakyNun Because the result must be L
So it will label automatically since it knows what the result must be
for 3 of the 4 variables
which labels I, which labels the output

@Sp3000 @_@
@Fatalize I don't get it

@LeakyNun What? I see things written

(can't you make all integers label)
@Fatalize I mean, why is there no backtracking

the result of pred1 say for example is [14 + I, 24 + I, 34 + I, 44+ I]

2:51 PM
@Sp3000 Congratulations on posting a question for anagol!

which must be equal to [24, 34, 44, E]
Therefore since there is only one possible solution it will directly label I as 10
an thus E as 54

@Fatalize I see. The complexity of your approach is very good then

I always strive to achieve the best complexity possible
Despite what dubious quotes say
:p
@LeakyNun Why would there be when the first rule is the right one?

Oh
because it checks that the result of apply is L
before the write
since . is L in pred1
so it never prints if it's impossible

@TimmyD bwahahahaha
Of course, this means that JS is tinfoil which I think is apt

Anonymous
@quartata What do package managers have to do with anything?

The word not the package manager

PS C:\Tools\Scripts\golfing> $javascript -eq $tinfoil
True
It checks out

Hmm. I can only use materials to tell the difference between meat (FLESH) and not meat (VEGGIE)

@quartata I have many questions again

Myesss?

But mostly they can be summarized with. "I keep dying. It doesn't seem like I'll git gud for a while. What is an achievable goal at my skill level?"
The others are in the Nethack chat.
I can think of a few possible goals: getting to Minetown; getting to Sokoban; getting to the Oracle; just getting past level 3 for once.

3:31 PM
Maybe try getting to the quest level.

@Sherlock9 Take the Junethack trophy list, and try to achieve the goals for these.

@Fatalize Done.

Ugh. I hate when a challenge looks so familiar I dupe-search it, just to find that I remember it from being sandboxed for months.
3
I'm just glad I can see deleted sandbox posts. Otherwise it would probably drive me crazy.

3:50 PM
@zyabin101 that's a pretty good idea

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ :D

@Sherlock9 make it to sokoban top and clear the treasure room (treasure = BOH/"oR + evil monsters)

@Geobits Been there, cursed that.
@Downgoat That's a weird thing to say, considering it was created by your oppressors.

^
@Dennis who needs imperial systems. just count everything in bytes
everything
"Can I have 1 byte of orange sherbet?"

That works surprisingly well for foodstuffs. Or not surprisingly.
But you really should count in bits. Bytes is a derived measure.

4:05 PM
okay
"What's that?" "Oh, just a geo-bit."

Yeah. Then we can do things like 5280 geo-bits makes a geo-mile

@Dennis yes but we freed the imperial system from the oppressors

@Geobits how many drunk bits is a ridiculously nice bit?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ It only takes one drunk bit, but it's not guaranteed.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I have, but I have to wait another 42 minutes to see if I did it right.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I did a manual update just now.

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ....because it's hourly? :P
I set it up as a cronjob.

@El'endiaStarman can't you test it by setting it for like a minute or something and then changing it back to an hour?

@quartata @zyabin101 @EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Those are all interesting goals, but I should note that I have yet to make past level 3, so your suggestions may take me a while

okay
@Sherlock9 entrance to soko is below the oracle, anywhere from level 11 to level 4 iirc
because oracle is 10-5

@Maltysen I actually did do that by accident. Now I have to figure out where the python3.5 executable actually is... >_<

βετѧ ΛєҫαγPython 3, 314 bytes There's a lot of bytes wasted on the roman numerals, so there's likely some golfing to be done there. import re def f(x,r="",n={1:"I",4:"IV",5:"V",9:"IX",10:"X",40:"XL",50:"L",90:"XC",100:"C",400:"CD",500:"D",900:"CM",1e3:"M"}): for v,i in sorted(n.items(),reverse=1): whi...

@JonathanAllan I think a ternary if would be longer, at least with this approach. There seems to be a problem for [1,0,0,0] though.

@βετѧΛєҫαγ Looks to me like you don't need most of the roman numerals at all.

@Dennis - question closed for now - I just noticed it wont do integer division cases correctly
@Dennis I saw a comment about adding the example [261,65,16,4]
...so that's the same problem as [1,0,0,0]

@βετѧΛєҫαγ I just ran your code up to n=30, and the only numerals that appear are Is and Vs. You can cut out a lot of bytes because of that.

4:58 PM
I disagree with the duplicate votes. Finding the algorithm is simpler in the sense that there's only one operation to consider, but at the same time, it's harder because integer division has to be accounted for. I don't think there's porting an answer from the other challenge would be substantially easier than writing one from scratch. — Dennis ♦ 27 secs ago

What the heck?
Alright, my Internet appears to be working for now, but that was really weird.

@Dennis yeah, it's on hold as "unclear..." probably because of the lack of clarity on the integer division point

And my Internet has screwed up again. I doubt that this message will go through until the connection is back up

I'm not sure what's unclear about the challenge
can anybody inform me before I cast my reopen vote?

The challenge mentions integer division, yet there are no test cases to verify if integer division is accounted for.

5:08 PM
is a lack of test cases enough to make something unclear?

Maybe not, but when most answers make a mistake that would have been prevented by better test cases, putting the challenge on hold might not be the worst idea.
The most sensible option might be to just include those test cases and vote to reopen.

\o/ TNBDE auto-update script works!

nice!

@El'endiaStarman yay smile

5:15 PM
@Sherlock9 What happens if you open another site? Do you get any router-hsts or ISP-specific error page? That should be enough to upset HSTS.

@Dennis Google did for a bit
The connection has been alternating between working fine and getting an error for an hour or so

Only 652 xkcd oneboxes. And there are 1726 xkcd comics altogether.

Hey @El'endiaStarman thanks, I've managed to shorten my code a lot now

No problem. :)

5:17 PM
@Sherlock9 That explains it then. Browser tries to access site with HSTS over HTTPS, HTTP error page is served, browser gets angry.

Magnificent, we have a diagnosis!
Is there a cure or treatment?

Get a working internet connection. :P

Would that I and the people at my lodgings could, we would have done anywhere in the past two years

I feel your pain.

Would that we could, we'd kick out the bandwidth-hogging nutcases on the second floor, too. It's bad enough that the connection is split between three floors, but they keep connecting to our third-floor connection and hogging our internet too

5:26 PM
How do they do that?

The whole house knows the passwords on the WiFi for each floor

@El'endiaStarman I sent off an email to the developer of Slay asking for permission. I don't think I need it, but I like being nice

@Sherlock9 And no way to change it?

@NathanMerrill Sweet.

5:29 PM
getting the API for this one is going to be tough

I have made the codegolf codepad project page!

Ok now someone is actively screwing with me. They've changed every a to z and every the to dickbutt

That's hilarious
I need to make a language like that

I've got an excellent image of Dickbutt Nineteenth Byte to share if only I could properly get through and upload it

considering there are multiple, merge-able islands each with their own balance and income

5:32 PM
Got through on my mobile data

@Sherlock9 If somebody can actually modify your HTTP traffic, be glad HSTS is a thing.

I'm glad that my security is working. I just want to get the data I request unmolested please

@El'endiaStarman "" is the top kind?

@BaldBantha Yeah, since most messages are not oneboxes.

Oh. Makes sense.

5:34 PM
@Sherlock9 Involve law enforcement? Bandwidth hogging is one thing, but intercepting traffic is serious.

wow google is really pushing cloud platform
some lady just video called me from their marketing thing
she said my account was on a "high growth trajectory". I bill $7/month

I sincerely doubt that this "small-scale online pranking" is going to raise much alarm over here

@Maltysen How sure are you that it was actually from google?

I can't submit anything on the code golf codepad because codepad was actively dumbily deleting all my pastes from this project.

@Geobits no, i got an email from her first
it was legit
it was just incredibly stupid

5:36 PM
Please, Codepad, let me normally send code.

Ah. Just curious, because I get a bunch of crap from them, but never a video call.
I must not be "high growth" :(

@Geobits they talked to me about "my company" because I had bought a domain "supernovaapps.com" like 7 years ago with my granfathered GAE account

Tried to connect back to my regular connection and use UC Browser and uh well...

@Sherlock9 I know that law enforcement is some places is too uninformed to consider this a serious issue, but if they're able to intercept and/or modify traffic, you have to consider all accounts on websites that permit you to send passwords or authentication cookies over unencrypted connections compromised.

@Maltysen That is one seriously beautiful site.

5:39 PM
@Geobits ikr
the site is actually useful because of supernovaapps.com/eula-terms
but that link isn't actually anywhere
i want to make it not vomit-inducing, but:

secondo me la cosa che puo' funzionare e' un programma che facendo le medie si accorge se ci sono delle compre di titoli insolite: si acquista quel titolo; lo stesso per le vendite: si vende quel titolo. Un programma non avendo informazioni esterne oltre queste non puo' fare di meglio (come anche noi che informazioni abbiamo su quei titoli? sono vere ? sono false tali informazioni? sono importanti? etc) — RosLuP 1 min ago
I think the thing that can 'work and' doing a program that averages can sense if there are compre unusual titles: you buy that title; the same for sales: it sells that title. A program not having external information beyond these can not 'do better (as we also have that information on those titles? True? Is false that information? Important? Etc)

@Maltysen I like it at that size, but it seems like it might not scale (down) well.

Q: Safe way to eat zombies?

JDługoszThis answer to Making food last for a large group made me realize that using the zombies as a source of resources is pretty much never covered by genre pieces even when it is essentially a siege situation. What ways can the besieged find to use the (“killed” for good) zombies as a source of food...

5:54 PM
Why would you eat a zombie? Isn't its flesh rotten?

In post-apocalyptic scenarios, food is usually rare.

its like wine
rotten grape juice

I do prefer wine over zombie meat though.

hey, for all we know, the zombie virus may make the meat taste better and be good for you!

be good for you - not sure if turning into a zombie is good for us or not

5:59 PM
I don't think the "zombie disease" could actually be caused by a virus. Fungus would/is possible though.
