8:01 PM
Anyways... How are things doing 'round here?

The usual
Geez, it's quiet in here

Lots of well-thought out and barely readable code, more one-letter variable names than you can shake a stick at

And one-letter functions

@DJMcMayhem not really

Lambdas and recursion up the wazoo

8:06 PM
Yep. You folks never change.

Who uses variables? Just use a stack

We change on a regular basis
When someone writes up a cool new language to mess around with :D
Or pushes a new change to an existing language

Bah. Iterative programming is where all the cool kids hang out. (programming, not development - I know jack all about Agile)

Speaking of pushing a new change to an existing language, @ConorO'Brien What dictionary(ies) do you think V should use?

A dictionary of course

8:08 PM
@DJMcMayhem I have no idea. You could use mine (warning, huge file), and change it some for python

what need a definition of "dictionary"

One of these days, I need to get back out to a project where the variable names are sane. I've doing just PPCG for several months now

@ConorO'Brien Oh god.

@Zizouz212 what?

@Sherlock9 Come over to Open Source. The people there are rather insane :P
@ConorO'Brien Large file indeed.

8:09 PM
yup

@Zizouz212 I'll give it a look :D

Oh my god, I can steal people so well here! xD

Anonymous
Quick somebody ban Ziz for shameless promotion and stealing people!

mua ha ha

I looked
It's 3 am

8:12 PM
@Mego It's not me! Open Source is a community effort! I'm just doing my [evil] part!

I'm not sure that the questions I saw are... in line with my current interests
But I may be tired and I'll look again tomorrow

@Sherlock9 Don't like things like this?
\o/

Licensing and law at 3 am -___-

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I kept trying to read that as Prime Minister of the US, and wondering why the handle was called POTUS... -_-

8:14 PM
So Ziz is like copyleft licensing? Comes in here and infects everyone else with the FOSS bug? ;-)

Yeah, I'm going to sleep on it
Thanks for the invite, though
Goodnight everyone

Night!

@Zizouz212 10/10

Probably not allowed to say this, being an "open source" mod and all, but open source, for all the good things it has, is also full of nonsense. The variations in copyleft are stupid, too many permissive licenses, and you can't change anything without being yelled at.

@AlexA. guy in line in front of me earlier today was called Alex Arslan. found you /s
he doesn't look like your old github profile pic

8:16 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ lol thanks... Do I get a cookie? :)

no
only helka can give cookies

Speaking of which, @Mego @ConorO'Brien That question went hot :/

@Zizouz212 I'll give you something you don't have in canada: 🌴
@Zizouz212 link?

Anonymous
@Zizouz212 100% agree, that's why I use MIT :P

8:18 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ I'll just go back into my cold little igloo :P
@Mego If I actually knew how to code, I'd probably go there too :)

Anonymous
@Zizouz212 har har har

Speaking of which, I could potentially just slam my hands on the keyboard, and it may be a valid program, in a language used around here :P

Q: Output "Fit" numbers

Rohan Jhunjhunwala"Fit Numbers" Sam has a "brilliant" idea for compression! Can you help him? Here is a rundown of Sam's compression scheme. First take in a base 10 representation of any natural number strictly smaller than 2^16, and write it as a binary string, and strip all leading zeros 1 -> 1 9 -> 1001 15...

Should just make a language called Gibbrish... Give a random sequence of characters, output a random number
The random number of course, always being four
2

Well, shiiiiiiiiit. What I thought was a small bug in V turns out to be a neovim bug. :(
That means I can't fix it.

8:21 PM
Oh, as an aside, who does the design script? There's a pretty darn big bug in it
I can see vote counts.

That's intentional I believe

Yeah. there's a plugin that lets you see vote counts and the design script includes it

@RohanJhunjhunwala conor made comic

@Zizouz212 yeeeeaah!

8:24 PM
@Zizouz212 there was some language that would take a number, set it as a seed, and eval the text in a different language
the randomly generated text*

@DJMcMayhem How does that work? I would imagine that it would need to be connected to some other user's account

@Zizouz212 From my understanding, the up/down votes are sent in the HTML to the client anyway, and it's just "hidden" behind a click. So, no reason.

^
I use that plugin all the time, aside from the design script

Ah. So the votes come in the original request?

er, that's not right

8:26 PM
...

they don't come in the HTML, they require an API call

Yes, but surely the API call would require some token

the reason they hide them is to prevent expensive API calls
the API call doesn't check for the user rep level

It's like a no-arg call, free for anyone to get?

Anonymous
@NathanMerrill That's Seed

8:29 PM
@NathanMerrill Ah. Thanks for the clarification.

@Zizouz212 I'm not positive you don't need some authentication level, but I do know its independent of rep

Okay.

Vim is being retarded. Does anyone know how to move a mark one character forward?
From vimscript that is

@NinjaBearMonkey Hillaryous.

:q!

8:43 PM
Ugh ... base conversion in PowerShell sucks.

@TimmyD why is that
is it overly verbose java-like?

base conversion?

Use --- not ~~

why the hell is it 3
normal markdown is 2 iirc
i tried hyphens first but only did 2 x:

@Poke It has to use clunky .NET calls -- link

8:48 PM
int('100000101101', 2) # 2093
That's python for you :)

java has binary literals which can be nice

PowerShell has hex "literals" -- the 0x operator. It's technically a unary operator that takes a hexadecimal string on the right and converts it to integer

0b, 0x, 0...

Also, the [convert]::ToString(string,base) only supports bases of 2,8,10,16
Other than that, you roll your own

Python has [2, 36]

8:54 PM
Converting to hex is "{0:x}"-f$int where $int represents an integer. Not terrible, but kinda clunky.
I just want a "{0:b}"-f$int syntax

9:12 PM
Idk why my reference implementation got downvoted
I actually put a lot of effort in to the reference too. It took me a while

Hello Alpha Particle

hello @Zizouz212

Alpha Particle? Helium Nuclei? Beta Decay? Are we in a nuclear research facility?

helium nucleus is alpha particle

:)

9:16 PM
...releasing with alpha decay

@Zizouz212 And we all know @Zizouz212 got a high dose...
alpha decreptitude sounds better

Bit of a high pitched voice here...
Anyone got some sulfur and fluoride around here?

@Zizouz212 my t00thpaste haz flouride

no one likes it :(

@Zizouz212 i wonder for how long you could do that
and if it would ever feel like you're suffocating

Well, it's really just air, so for as long as the air stays inside your lungs

Isn't it dangerous?

But it will displace oxygen, so you really shouldn't do it for long

9:32 PM
it isnt oxygen, soooooo....
ninja'd :(

And it could probably be absorbed too ?

I feel surprisingly smart now.
@flawr Yep. Definitely will enter your bloodstream (then of course, all gases do, thanks to diffusion)

It isn't that toxic though in small quantities
It will kill u through asphyxiation

divers have 1/5 o2 and 4/5 he
n2 can kill them

The halogens are seriously dangerous for you
Cl, F...

9:36 PM
@Zizouz212 elemental halogens are bad, but if they are present in a nice stable compound its safe. Just like salt is ok, Sulfur Hexaflouride isn't toxic

Yep, I was more talking about their diatomic forms, so Cl2, or F2

you die without nacl tho
welp lel my interwebz r gone
ooh itz back

I think I read about a chemical on reddit or so, where they said if you notice it, you're basically dead.
A thing that only needs the slightest contact with your skin or that goes even through some of the gloves.

dihydrogen monoxide?

@flawr it was a chemical reaction called love.

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei nope

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ lol

that needs stars

@flawr Oh, I think I know
It smells like almonds and stuff, right?

@Optimizer so, hormones and neurotransmitters?

9:41 PM
Cyanide
Is that it?

@Zizouz212 Nope, worse than that.

Worse?

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei yes. if u can notice hormones. I think u r a ghost anyways

@Zizouz212 Hydrofluoric Acid?

@Optimizer no i am not a ghost how did you think that
@flawr lel i have it 5 meters away

9:42 PM
Yep, but since it's an acid, it will more burn you, then kill you

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei I am not saying u r.

And it depends - if it's not very concentrated, then touching it will probably do nothing (I never said that)

Oh: Dimethylmercury

touch my hcl

9:43 PM
> touching it will probably do nothing.
worse than forever alone

-_-
@flawr Oh shit that sounds scary

@Zizouz212 Also read the follow up comment=)
I don't know whether any of this is true, but it is hillarious to read=)

Reading right now... HF, OsO4...
Oh here's one not to do (that you can do in your own house) -> Mix bleach with baking soda

@Zizouz212 Why not?
What if baking soda is not white enough?

That will generate chlorine gas, which will kill you in minutes

9:47 PM
i thought u said hcl

straight from 4chan.

@flawr that is amazing

into the banishing zone.

9:49 PM
Be careful with the pictures you post.
2

especially the reply to it
remember
@Zizouz212 is scary mod
he can 11 you to opensource-come

RAAAH!!! ROOAAARRR!!! I AM EVIL AND SCARY MOD!
:P
I'm actually not that scary..

touching whom doesn't do anything

@Zizouz212 uh-huh

I often get scared by the smallest things

9:51 PM
@Zizouz212 buh

Yeah, nice try

@Zizouz212 BUH

Okay. I'm not scared by random strangers on the internet, who say "BUG"
BAH
BUH
finally -_-

@Zizouz212 what about buh?
oh ninja'd
welp my interwebz gone again

You guys are really bad at scaring me

9:54 PM
Would creating a quine built-in (a la HQ9+) be a loophole for the purposes of quine-flaired challenges?

Funny...

@StevenH. thats a standard loophole, but do take a look at this cahllenge

$ echo -e "\a"

@StevenH. Unfortunately, people have done that, but the annoying thing is that there's a sliding scale of quine-builtin-ness which makes it tricky to regulate

-2
Q: No Quine Built In? No Problem!

Rohan JhunjhunwalaAre you tired of languages with built in quining techniques? Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to add a built-in quine feature to the language of your choice. Task Given some programming language X, you should define A language X′ that is a subset of X. A quine command strin...

We added a simple way to make a quine built in in java, by compiling code down to java.
@Sp3000 I always hate javascript for that
functions
have toString() methods, which makes quining trivial (even a bit "cheaty")

10:00 PM
@Zizouz212 Umm, pretty sure that isn't true. Bleach and ammonia is bad, but I'm pretty sure the only thing bleach and baking soda does when mixed is clean stuff even better.

@Zizouz212 The accelerometer of a phone lying on the same desk as a computer can be used to log keystrokes on said computer

@Sp3000 seriously?

Hmm... Baking soda isn't actually right... What was it...

Ammonia

@Sp3000 ....and the person is using win10?

10:01 PM
Yep. Ammonia... No clue why I said baking soda
@Sp3000 Yeah, not sensitive enough... And again, nice try :P

@Sp3000 Where I'd lie on the sliding scale is a function that gives the program (as a list of functions) as output; its primary purpose would be for self-modifying recursion, but you could easily extract the code used to create the program from that data (mapping a function-name grabber to the string, for example)

@Steven H. while that techincally is permitted (javascript) (ab)uses it all the time. It may not be that interesting
@Downgoat How's cheese factory?

@StevenH. So... Pushing the program as a string but not being able to turn it into a program/code is fine?

10:09 PM
Clarify?

;_; why is everyone turning into a mod

@Zizouz212 Personally, for me the scariest thing is "botnets exist" but I dunno if that'll work

DON'T DO THAT!

Say I'm trying to do codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/89400/… in this programming language (assuming everything is implemented according to the current plan, which it's not). The solution could be /m\q; i.e. the intersection (/) of the program (q) mapped into their respective characters (m\ ).

Holy crap

10:17 PM
How cheaty would that solution (or similar) be?

Oh, I just realized
So far, @Sp3000 is the only one that's scared me so far... Don't know if that's a good thing :/

I'd personally consider that pretty cheaty but I'm not sure what others think - we also have a sliding scale of user views on quines

@Zizouz212 Trump has a 50/50 shot.
do i win now?

Nope. You forgot, I've got Trudeau (and we're keeping him!)

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Is Clinton that much better?

10:21 PM
@ASCII-only obama supports her, soooo.........

@ASCII-only Yes.

@Zizouz212 we had inönü but hitler affected us too

@Zizouz212 cough nukes cough

...

canada will get hit by the north korea/usa fallout

10:22 PM
The non-q solution would be almost the same as a lot of programs already posted as solutions: /"/\"\ but it has the benefit of mirror symmetry so that's cool I guess?

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei what country are you in?

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ turkey

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Umm... Pretty sure we'll put both of you in your spots

10:23 PM
@StevenH. That depends on whether your syntax there includes " in the string

@Zizouz212 lel topkek

@Zizouz212 yep, intentional

u sorry m8?

?
What just happened?

10:24 PM
> Pretty sure we'll put both of you in your spots
?

\ is the escape character, so it'll escape the second instance of " @Sp3000

Nah, I meant we won't let you folks fight

Or we'll send the blue guys

lel
@Zizouz212 lel do you think trump will care?

10:25 PM
theyll be sorry if you fight

It will be funny once the entire world goes against you then

The second instance of \ in the string will autofill with another \ , then the " will autofill, then the input i will autofill; all three during the evaluation of the program itself rather than during preprocessing

@Zizouz212 i didn't say i thought that was good
i'm planning on moving to france

Ooh, France

they seem to have no problems so far

10:26 PM
except for a nice does of anti-religion

They seem to be in the media alot

except isis attacks

For exactly that ^^^^
When I grow up, I'll just move to the North. No one can, or will hurt me there

north of where?

10:27 PM
i want to go from turkey, what country u think i should go?

@ConorO'Brien Well, stay in Canada :P

@StevenH. But another reason for the sliding scale is languages like ><> which have a way of pushing almost all chars in the program in one byte, but more as a result of semantics of how the language works

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei canada

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ ye i was actually considering canada

10:30 PM
@Zizouz212 but but WIFIFIFIFFIFI

Yeah. Canada.

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei canada. hey are the only ones unnafected by the nazi's if they won WII :P

which universities there would accept me? :p im 16 btw

Hey, I'm 16 too :P
A lot of universities here are really open to international students... And pretty much every public university is really good

ye i looked it up

10:39 PM
There really are a lot of young people here at PPCG

there are lots of international students
my interwebz borked again
oh its back

@ConorO'Brien In other news Germany just beat Canada in the Olympics soccer semifinal

If you find the right university, you might not need to worry about your age. I say might because I don't have experience with the Canadian system, but o'er in the US I was able to get into uni at 14 so it's definitely possible

@HelkaHomba Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
@StevenH. Uni at 14? o_O

Yeah. I graduated this spring, currently 17
B.S. in (you guessed it) Computer Science

10:42 PM
Yep. Everyone around here does compsci or something related
walks away

@StevenH. wat how
@Zizouz212 I don't think I will

i dunno what i should do

Me neither - I'll likely do public affairs or urban planning

i lyk compterz
also astronomy
> aviation, urban planning, public affairs, teaching or law
wow

Yeah... I'm kinda clueless

10:45 PM
@StevenH. ;_; that doesn't happen in Australia

shud i stdy compterz or teh skiez

Whatever your heart desires :)

former

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Please don't speak like this. It lowers the tone of one of the few (usually) civilized places on the internet.
13

I mean, you can try applying to universities anyway even if there isn't a special program for it
@ReleasingHeliumNuclei Why not both?!

10:46 PM
^^^

You can get a job programming rovers for Mars or the Moon or what have you, it'll be great!

@ASCII-only I know someone who's about two years younger than me yet we go to the same uni classes, so I think they joined a bit early. They don't get "exclusive rooms" for it though :P

@Sp3000 Only two years though
I mean technically I'm doing that, but only for one course

Yeah well I thought I'd limit it to examples I personally knew about
Dunno if there's younger

Youngest one I've known was 11

10:49 PM
@Sp3000 Also, I'm not entirely sure how that's possible in any way other than jumping two grades

Yeah that's what they did I think

It's a little too late for me anyway

Eager to get out of education and start working or something?

@Sp3000 Not really, but spending less time at school would have been nice

Vimscript comments are very odd.
@Zizouz212 it's not that uncommon near me

10:54 PM
@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ Vim has comments?

particulary high school juniors/seniors taking college courses

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ what comments?

@ASCII-only When I was in high school I was able to take lots of classes at the local community college for credit in both schools. I hadn't graduated early or anything, it was just a program. I agree that (unless your Terence Tao or w/e) what Steven describes is a rare situation (unless things have really changed)

this: """ ?

10:56 PM
", yes

Lua's comments are odder imo

but but unmatched quotes

It is rare as an organized program and even rarer as a single student going off fully matriculated to university, as there's only a handful of these types of programs in the world and (most) kids who want to go to university do it by just trying to excel in high school rather than running off to applications in their early (pre-)teens. It's just... it's possible

@HelkaHomba Yeah, I'm doing that

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ you can match them if u want to

10:58 PM
@HelkaHomba partly because I really need that extra credit

@ReleasingHeliumNuclei yes, but it isn't enforced

@EᴀsᴛᴇʀʟʏIʀᴋ same as VB with '

" comment line "
why my connection is borking all the time :|

Dim foo as Integer ' this is an integer
