@HelkaHomba What about Chrome's logo?

lol

RRR
GBY
GGY
easy enough

White.

But the Gs aren't a rectangle.

Oh, I dumb

9:03 PM
RRRRR
GWWWY
GWBWY
GWWWY
GGGYY

Again, they're not rectangular.
But that does provide a pretty good counterexample.

Yeah

Done.
rectified

If spaces were allowed...

9:04 PM
Wait, do the pieces have to stay the same size?

Okay then.
Success.

  B
WWWW
RRGG
 YY
Wait, the yellow doesn't touch the white.

#oops

9:05 PM
RRRRRR
RRRRRR
GG BYY
 GGBYY
  GGYY

BBB
WWW

Also, the white in the chrome logo has a hole so it's not simply connected anyhow

Diagonal rectangular

  B
  W
RRWGG
 YYY
Aw shoot, R doesn't touch G.

RG
BY
works for no-white logo if corners count

9:07 PM
yeah
Okay, back to the first countries example.

We are great.

@El'endiaStarman Oh, R and C also border each other

Oh yeah, they do.

@Cyoce It's a meme.

9:10 PM
whoever upvoted that you can't read that fast...

I already upvoted. How do I upvote again?
Oh ... I could unupvote, and then upvote.

@MartinBüttner It's trust ;) [and it wasn't me btw]

I just finished reading. :P +1

Have you hit rep cap for today, yet? No reason ... >.>

btw, I'm still taking bets for the length of a Hexagony quine

9:11 PM

@TimmyD does it matter? :P

Q: Clarification for Jane Street Travel Agent Puzzle

Isaac KleinmanI came across this puzzle. I thought I understood the puzzle's instructions but was confused by the example they give. I suspect the 8 and 5 are supposed to be interchanged on the example path. Can this be confirmed? Here is my understanding of what the die looks like:

@MartinBüttner Maybe? I haven't figured out how un-upvotes are counted when rep cap is reached.

oh right... yeah they're weird

@El'endiaStarman This works if you allow corners and don't mind false-neighbors. But pretty sure impossible the strict way
KRM
KCN

9:14 PM
@lirtosiast any guess for how long a Hexagony quine is gonna be?

@HelkaHomba which ones should be neighbours?

21 mins ago, by Helka Homba
Given a map of simply connected shapes in a plane (countries, say), is it always possible to reshape them into rectangles such that their neighbors stay exactly the same? I'm figuring no looking at a map of M=Mongolia, C=China, R=Russia, N=North Korea, K=Kazakhstan. K, M, and N all need to touch both C and R but not each other.

@MartinBüttner I bet the unwrapped hexagon will have sides of length 7.
And C and R touch as well.

very optimistic ;)

9:15 PM
@MartinBüttner 35

23

@MartinBüttner It has to be a hexagonal number, right?

@MartinBüttner Oh, I'm shooting for the final solution. You got the Prelude quine from 5157 to 133.

I think he isn't counting the padding.

9:16 PM
@El'endiaStarman so your bet is between 92 and 127 inclusive

...on second thought, make that 9. :P

Given that "Hello World" is 32, and FizzBuzz is 112 but there's a lot of noops

@MartinBüttner 23.

@El'endiaStarman so 170-217 inclusive

Yes, that sounds good.

9:18 PM
ಠ_ಠ People stop down voting posts that are already closed. sigh

@El'endiaStarman Did you figure out what's going wrong with -c

@El'endiaStarman I'll write that down as 193.5 :P

@MartinBüttner I guess 478, your user id sans duped digit

@TimmyD nupes. :D

@HelkaHomba I think that method is about as valid as any other...

9:20 PM
@AquaTart I'll go take a look now.

@VoteToClose Downvotes are still relevant on closed posts. If it gets to -3, it can be deleted.

@VoteToClose Hah, missed a -

@Mego grumbles about them needing to be delete-able without down voting

@mbomb007 Looks the same to me.

@AlexA. New users take down votes very personally (from what I've seen). If something is just off-topic, it should just be removed, not making the user possibly offended over misunderstanding the site.
Also, @TimmyD @Mego ಠ_ಠ

@Dennis Hey, Dennis. When you get a chance, could you pull Pylons for TIO? Thanks.

@Mego Yes, but those votes came in after the question was closed. They are unhelpful at that point. Before the question is closed, they indicate helpful dissatisfaction with a question, after, they indicate useless malice.

@VoteToClose Userscript changes all instances of "Vitsy" with "Purse Dog" ;-)

9:28 PM
But that's just my opinion.

@VoteToClose To be fair, I cast a downvote after it was closed because, in the length of time it took me to navigate to the question from the review queue to downvote it (because I forgot to downvote before hitting close), it was already closed.

Never attribute to malice what can be perfectly explained by voting based solely on the question, and not its meta-information.

@NewSandboxedPosts 3 = 0 mod 3?

^

@Mego I don't understand down voting if you already put in a close vote. >.>
@HelkaHomba 0 = 3 mod 3. :P

What? Why are there two events for this.

9:32 PM
Because downvotes and close votes mean separate things >_>

Anonymous
@VoteToClose I downvoted because it was low-quality. I closevoted because it was off-topic.

@HelkaHomba The last case is if it's exactly 3.

@VoteToClose shorter: s/?/ :P/, 8 bytes.

@AlexA. Should be first case for short-circuit purposes.

9:32 PM
@AlexA. unclear

@Geobits Okay, will do. Thanks.
@HelkaHomba You mean that isn't clear in the spec or the entire spec is unclear?

@VoteToClose Alex mod Martin = ?
@AlexA. the exactly 3 bit

Martex

@HelkaHomba wrong is the residue.
Martin is not generally wrong, but alex is.

(Mod mod Mod)

9:34 PM
@AlexA. n = 0 mod 3 is only true for n = 0, n mod 3 = 0 is true for n = 0, 3, 6, 9...

@VoteToClose You've got your notation backwards.
n is congruent to 1, modulo 3, means n = 3 k + 1

He has equals, not congruence signs.

Mathematical notation ≠ program notation

@TimmyD s/=\=/!=/
that looks stupid (the regex)

O.o Well then. I've been writing that wrong for about 3 years, then.

9:37 PM
/=\=/!=\=/=\=/!=\=/=\=/!=\=/=\=/!=\=/=\=/!

@RikerW Again, mathematical notation ;-)

I don't care ≠ False.

Fixed

@aditsu How does it work?

@TimmyD This is correct program notation in AppleScript. >.>

9:38 PM
@El'endiaStarman basically, it's hardcoded and compressed

@RikerW So... you do care?

12999 binary digits

Huh, so you wrote another program to figure that out?

@VoteToClose Le sigh.

you mean how I got the digits? nah, I downloaded them :)

9:39 PM
lllllaaaame
standard loophole lame

I might not be able to use AppleScript much longer. D:

@MartinBüttner which loophole?

@aditsu That's....very against my intent when I wrote the challenge.

whether it's a standard loophole or not, I'm pretty sure it's not in the spirit of the challenge
oh yeah, that's what El'endia just said

ok, the challenge didn't really say I should calculate them, it just says "output"

9:41 PM
@VoteToClose You say that like it's a bad thing :P

@Geobits It is a bad thing. D: I might not be able to answer with ridiculous verbosity much longer!

@aditsu I'm pretty sure I can find a loophole on rule lawyering/taking things too literally as well...

Wait, no, never mind, good thing that I don't want to happen. >.>

@aditsu Second challenge I ever wrote. I'd change it now if it didn't mean invalidating an answer.....well, I might change that now anyway.

A: Loopholes that are forbidden by default

Martin BüttnerAdding input or rules which weren't explicitly mentioned in the challenge There was recently a case where an answerer claimed Nowhere does it say the program can't (also) ask the user what the [result] is. Adding additional input or new rules, because they haven't been explicitly forbidden...

9:43 PM
@ricdesi About my comment on your answer: Answering an off-topic question only makes asking them seem "allowed" and bound to get an answer. By not answering them, they can be redirected to a more appropriate place for them to be asked.

It's not a challenge.

That's totally understandable, yeah.

@TimmyD I think the rule Martin mentioned applies better

@aditsu For your original, sure. I was responding specifically to "Well the challenge didn't really say"

Also, I really wish there was a way to message people in SE if there's no appropriate way to comment on a relevant answer. >.> I was like, "please let this person wander into chat so I can explain my logic" to some deity, not sure which.

9:45 PM
@VoteToClose There's always another verbose language waiting :)

@El'endiaStarman well, the output is not given, it was chosen by me

@Geobits Like MineCraft! :D
I need to do more answers in MC. >.>

Mods can super-ping people into chat.

anyway, I understand it's not what you really wanted, I might work on that too

Not exactly what I had in mind, but sure!

9:46 PM
@El'endiaStarman But non-mods can't, soo...

@VoteToClose That is downright EERIE

it would be cool if it ends up being shorter :)

@VoteToClose It was inevitable

> You can check out anytime you like ... but you can never leave ...

@El'endiaStarman is it ok if I hardcode, say, 20 binary digits, and calculate the rest?

@TimmyD Interestingly enough, I was just about to post this. Almost ninja'd.

@aditsu That's....really iffy. Why would that help anyway?

Get outta my head

alright, I'll try not to hardcode anything then

Thank you. :)

(it might help with speed)

I don't much care about speed, so long as it's not something like "brute force all binary sequences of length 13000 and check them for this property".

@Downgoat I really want to put something like "Community♦︎ wants protection" as a comment on your meta question, but I feel as though this is inappropriate and bound to be FlagAsSpam'd.

Tl;dw for the video: English prisons were really awful. The public protested, so they were reformed. One of the new things was making prisoners walk on what was essentially a long water wheel with paddles, in such a way that they had to keep stepping up or they would fall off. The resulting manpower was used to pump water and turn mills, which is where the name "treadmill" comes from. Great for everyone...except the prisoners.
