@Calvin'sHobbies I realised after posting that humour was a distraction, and what was needed was a question-focused version of the loopholes meta post that covers answers. So I edited to sound more inclusive and your answer is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see. There is a post on writing a good golf challenge, but your test cases answer applies to more than just golfs, so it fits here.
(l-x)^2-3x^2=0
(l-x-sqrt(3)x)(l-x+sqrt(3)x)=0
l=1+sqrt(3) or l=1-sqrt(3) so either l=2.73x or l=-0.37x
l=2.73x or l=-0.37x meaning x=1.366l or x=-0.366l, respectively

I think the problem was that the helicopter brought that pole, and they were not able to release the cable from the attachment point under the helicopter.

Yes, that's the idea. I'm currently uncertain how to run it from a script (although I'll probably figure that out). My doubt is if MATL has any file or web access, which I would have to disable for security reasons.
@flawr $1 is the first CLA, so $(<$1) yields the contents of the file $1 specifies. I fixed the problem by using octave --path /opt/MATL instead of the cd.
